Rory Underwood, former RAF pilot and England rugby player, shares his journey from aviation cadet to fast jet pilot, flying the Jet Provost and Hawk, and balancing his rugby career. He discusses training, flying challenges, and the parallels between rugby and flying. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rory Underwood's passion for flying began in childhood, sparked by frequent flights between Malaysia and the UK. Observing aircraft during transit and marvelling at aerial views fueled his curiosity. His inquisitive nature led him to research planes, and attending boarding school near an airport reinforced his interest. Joining the Cadet Force's RAF section cemented his desire to become a pilot. Rory's training and career as a Royal Air Force fighter pilot were marked by intense physical and mental challenges, the need for constant adaptability, and the development of advanced flying skills. His experiences underscore the rigour and dedication required to succeed in such a demanding field. Rory's rugby and RAF careers share common threads of discipline, teamwork, leadership, and the ability to perform under pressure. The skills and experiences he gained in one field were often transferable and beneficial in the other, highlighting the similarities between competitive sports and military service. Rory emphasises the importance of following one's passions and not being afraid to pursue multiple interests. He advocates for the positive impact of sports and aviation on personal and professional growth. BEST MOMENTS "Walking out onto the pitch at Twickenham and representing England is an incredible experience" “There's lots of elements of trying to solve problems, trying to think on your feet under pressure” “There is a sense of elation because suddenly you're on your own. You can shout at yourself, you know, expletives and I can't believe I'm doing this." ABOUT THE GUEST Rory Underwood, ex-RAF fighter pilot and England rugby star, excelled in both fields. Born in Middlesbrough, his passion for aviation led to a distinguished RAF career, flying the Tornado GR1 and Hawk. On the rugby field, he set records as a winger and played in the 1991 World Cup final. Post-retirement, he remains active in charity and as a Leicester Tigers director. Humans are primates; we instinctively take important concepts and turn them into dominance/status games, including that concept itself; resulting in many people believing that important concepts do not exist at all. Welcome to the Part Time Pilot Audio Ground School Podcast! This podcast is going to be all about providing student pilots with ANOTHER way that they can consume the Private Pilot curriculum. The #1 reason student pilots never end up becoming a private pilot is NOT due to money. The real reason is actually deeper than that. Yes, flight training is expensive. But every student pilot knows this and budgets for it when they decide to do it. The actual #1 reason a student pilot fails is because they do not have a good, fundamental understanding of the private pilot knowledge they are meant to learn in ground school. You see when a student does not have a good grasp of this knowledge they get to a point in their flight training where their mind just can't keep up. They start making mistakes and having to redo lessons. And THAT is when it starts getting too expensive. This audio ground school is meant for the modern day student pilot... aka the part time student pilot. Let's face it, the majority of us have full time responsibilities on top of flight training. Whether it is a job, kids, family, school, etc. we all keep ourselves busy with the things that are important to us. And with today's economy we have to maintain that job just to pay for the training. The modern day student pilot is busy, on the go and always trying to find time throughout his or her day to stay up on their studies. The audio ground school allows them to consume high quality content while walking, running, working out, sitting in traffic, traveling, or even just a break from the boring FAR/AIM or ground school lecture. Did I meant high quality content? The audio ground school is taken straight out of the 5-star rated Part Time Pilot Online Ground School that has had over 350 students take and pass their Private Pilot exams without a SINGLE STUDENT FAILING. We do this by keeping ground school engaging, fun, light and consumable. We have written lessons, videos, audio lessons, live video lessons, community chats, quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, study guides, eBooks and much more. Part Time Pilot was created to be a breath of fresh air for student pilots. To be that flight training provider that looks out for them and their needs. So that is just what we are doing with this podcast. Episode 75: In this episode, we talked about S-Turns & Crosswind Takeoffs and Landings. We dissected the technique behind this essential maneuver, understanding its significance in refining a pilot's control and navigation skills. Shifting our focus to the challenges of crosswinds, we delved into the artistry of takeoffs and landings amidst lateral gusts. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Continuing the takeoffs debate, published by Richard Ngo on the AI Alignment Forum. Here's an intuitively compelling argument: only a few million years after diverging from chimpanzees, humans became much more capable, at a rate that was very rapid compared with previous progress. This supports the idea that AIs will, at some point, also start becoming more capable at a very rapid rate. Paul Christiano has made an influential response; the goal of this post is to evaluate and critique it. Note that the arguments discussed in this post are quite speculative and uncertain, and also cover only a small proportion of the factors which should influence our views on takeoff speeds - so in the process of writing it I've made only a small update towards very fast takeoff. Also, given that Paul's vision of a continuous takeoff occurs much faster than any mainstream view, I expect that even totally resolving this debate would have relatively few implications for AI safety work. So it's probably more useful to compare both Paul and Eliezer's scenarios against more mainstream views, than against each other. Nevertheless, it's disappointing that such an influential argument has received so little engagement, so I wanted to use this post to explore some of the uncertainties around the issue. I'll call Paul's argument the changing selection pressures argument, and quote it here at length: Chimpanzees evolution is not primarily selecting for making and using technology, for doing science, or for facilitating cultural accumulation. The task faced by a chimp is largely independent of the abilities that give humans such a huge fitness advantage. It's not completely independent - the overlap is the only reason that evolution eventually produces humans - but it's different enough that we should not be surprised if there are simple changes to chimps that would make them much better at designing technology or doing science or accumulating culture. Relatedly, evolution changes what it is optimizing for over evolutionary time: as a creature and its environment change, the returns to different skills can change, and they can potentially change very quickly. So it seems easy for evolution to shift from “not caring about X” to “caring about X,” but nothing analogous will happen for AI projects. (In fact a similar thing often does happen while optimizing something with SGD, but it doesn't happen at the level of the ML community as a whole.) If we step back from skills and instead look at outcomes we could say: “Evolution is always optimizing for fitness, and humans have now taken over the world.” On this perspective, I'm making a claim about the limits of evolution. First, evolution is theoretically optimizing for fitness, but it isn't able to look ahead and identify which skills will be most important for your children's children's children's fitness. Second, human intelligence is incredibly good for the fitness of groups of humans, but evolution acts on individual humans for whom the effect size is much smaller (who barely benefit at all from passing knowledge on to the next generation). Evolution really is optimizing something quite different than “humanity dominates the world.” So I don't think the example of evolution tells us much about whether the continuous change story applies to intelligence. This case is potentially missing the key element that drives the continuous change story: optimization for performance. Evolution changes continuously on the narrow metric it is optimizing, but can change extremely rapidly on other metrics. For human technology, features of the technology that aren't being optimized change rapidly all the time. When humans build AI, they will be optimizing for usefulness, and so progress in usefulness is much more likely to be linear. In other words, Paul argues fi...

Today, Clint discusses how having great takeoffs is often more important than your landings.
Episode 10: on my way back from Lima to Houston, I got a chance to visit the cockpit and see the pilots of a Boeing 767 300 ER In the cockpit. I got to see all the instruments and even turn on the seatbelt sign. When I went into the cockpit, I entered right after I boarded. I went into the cockpit, saw the pilots, and even saw them turning on the engines, the flats and slats for takeoff. Next, the first officer printed out an eight course paper which consisted of all the takeoff data of a Boeing 767 300 e r it includes V one speeds, the two speeds and the R speeds. It also has flaps, slat and thrust configurations for takeoff. If you do not know what v1, v2 speeds are The V one speed is the speed at which pilots can no longer abort the takeoff without a runway overrun. The V speed. Or more commonly known as the rotate speed Is the speed at which the wings have produced enough lift for the pilots to pull back on their yoke and lift the plane into the sky. The V2 speed is the speed that you must maintain or be faster than to avoid an aerodynamic stal. I am now going to tell you guys all about ACARS or aircraft communicating a dressing report system. A system that pilots use to get weather information. Takeoff and landing data. And all the very important pieces of information. Every aspect of flight. For instance, if you were flying from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to LAX or Los Angeles International Airport, you need many kinds of critical information to have a safe flight. For example, you need whether the v1 v2 speeds on landing data like landing speed flap configuration, slat configuration amount of reverse thrust, etc.. Let's take a look at whether. you are landing at LAX Airport from your flight in from Seattle, you need weather. So you would go into the flight computer, hit the A.C. switch, and then enter the four letter code for the airport. In this case, it's K, L, A, X This works for weather, takeoff and landing data.
