Music and our moods are intrinsically linked. We seek sad songs when we're blue, upbeat vibes to work out, maybe classical for a bit of zen. But how does this work? What happens in your brain when you listen to music? And how can you use music strategically to boost your mood and your performance? My guest today is Dr Sandra Garrido. Sandra is a pianist, a violinist, an author, a mum and researcher. She started studying law but found that she didn’t really like arguing with people for a living, so she returned to University to study music and psychology and this has been the foundation of her career ever since. At present Sandra is an NHMRC-ARC Dementia Research Fellow at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development at Western Sydney University, exploring mood regulation using music and how we might use music to improve the quality of life in people with mild dementia. In our podcast chat, Sandra and I explore:Why music is important to humansThe role music plays in our physiological, cognitive, social and emotional experienceHow music can positively effect our wellbeingWhy the music of our teens years sticks with us throughout life, andWhy we're drawn to sad songs when we're down - and how this can help and hinder us.Tune in to learn why music moves us.For more detail including a full transcript of the interview, visit potential.com.au/podcast.

I met Alyssa Sorresso at the Creative Nonfiction Writer’s Conference in 2015 (not 2014 as I think I said in the podcast). Alyssa’s essay had just been published in Creative Nonfiction, and she approached me after the magazine’s founder and the “Godfather of Creative Nonfiction” Lee Gutkind announced that I was looking for people to interview. Though one of her websites uses the word “tactless” (ironically paired with her middle name, Grace), that’s not the word that comes to mind when she introduced herself (poised and confident) or when I read her essay later (deliberate and intense). I asked Alyssa to be a guest on Behind the Prose, and she agreed. Finally, in October 2016, I scheduled the interview. Alyssa was almost a month into a self-funded sabbatical and she Skyped with me from a London flat. In this episode you’ll hear us discuss: what’s it like to work with Hattie Fletcher, managing editor of Creative Nonfiction; When personal is too personal for a personal essay; andWhy performing “live lit” may help your writing practice.

Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: We have seen significant increases in large companies creating some type of innovation lab or starting a partnership with an innovation lab. One benefit is that the innovation lab can run at a different pace than the organization. The lab has more freedom to try quick experiments and explore new areas that may be deemed too risky for the large organization. One lab that caught my attention when I first learned of it a few years ago was FirstBuild, which describes itself as the “place where ideas come to life.” FirstBuild is a creation of GE Appliances. They have created an open community with access to world-class engineering and design talent for exploring ideas and creating home appliances. I plan to visit FirstBuild in a few months to learn more, but for now, I spoke with Taylor Dawson, their Product Evangelist. Taylor’s background is in mechanical design engineering, having spent time at Lexmark International and then GE Appliances. In our discussion, you will learn: Why FirstBuild was created and how it helps GE,How they identify product ideas and potential market segments,Why they use crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo, andWhy a prototype is worth a thousand meetings.
