Did you know that years ago our mouths were big enough to fit wisdom teeth comfortably? And that jaw growth has decreased significantly over the last 100 years? You'll be surprised to hear how jaw growth, mouth-breathing and behaviour in kids (including ADHD-like symptoms) are all interconnected. Today we chat with Dr. Ben Miraglia, a graduate of SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and the United States Dental Institute, who has been in private practice for over 20 years. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Miraglia serves as the Chief Dental Officer at Toothpillow, a preventative, pre-orthodontic system designed to correct and support proper jaw development, promoting nasal breathing and preventing many health problems. Toothpillow addresses the root causes of misaligned teeth, often without the need for braces or tooth extraction. Without health insurance, families are one medical emergency away from financial ruin. Therefore, the security and care that health insurance provides is immeasurable. Unfortunately, many Coloradans still do not have access to these services. This lack of health coverage can lead to detrimental outcomes, especially for people of color and people without certain documentation, who often face greater barriers to access due to systemic exclusion from the health care system. Having health insurance creates a ripple effect within families, allowing all to achieve better health outcomes. For these reasons and so many more, we must work to create holistic, integrated, and equitable policy solutions – because all Coloradans are worthy of care and coverage. Welcome to another episode of The West Steps! This week, we expand on a critical conversation we've returned to throughout the podcast's four seasons. We are joined by Erin Miller, Vice President of Health Initiatives at the Colorado Children's Campaign; Shaunti Meyer, midwife and Senior Medical Director at Stride Medical Center; An Nguyen, Chief Dental Officer at Clinica Family Health; and Wendolyne Omaña, co-founder of Construyendo. Our guests highlight the importance of health insurance and preventative care, especially amongst pregnant people. They detail the need to make patients – especially people without documentation- feel safe and worthy of health care services. We also get a first glimpse at Cover all Coloradans, a bill being introduced this session which aims to provide health insurance to all undocumented pregnant people and kids under 19. To learn more about how this bill would provide more Coloradans with the physical, emotional, and oral health care they need and deserve, visit coverallcoloradans.org. Dentists across the UK last week came together to watch a webinar hosted by Sara Hurley, in the hopes that guidance, compassion, and most importantly answers could be provided by the Chief Dental Officer. However, many were dismayed to find their concerns ignored, their guidance still missing, and their questions left unanswered. Brad talks today about this missed opportunity for clarity, about the current state of affairs in UK dentistry, and the many ways in which the CDO could well have brought relief to the disharmony in the industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS With over 10,000 dentistry professionals assembled for the webinar, the CDO had an incredible opportunity to offer guidance and clarity in this unprecedented moment in time. Dentists need a swifter response and less red-tape. The main frustration at the moment is that any process currently needs to filter through far too many channels. This is a once in a generation crisis. All the stops should be pulled out in order to keep practices funded, and to relieve the stress, worry and uncertainty. The webinar should have acted as a concise bringing-together of clarity and information designed to guide practices, instead of creating fracture lines throughout the industry. There’s never been a better opportunity to unify the profession than now. The need for guidance has caused many to open lines of communication, to come together, and to work alongside each other in the search for solutions. BEST MOMENTS ’There’s a definite improvement in the community spirit among the dentist profession’ ‘We need somebody with a level of authority to take action!’ ’This should be a time for unity, not divisiveness’ ‘We find everything muddied by complexity' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dentists Respond To The CDO’s Coronavirus Webinar - https://www.dentistry.co.uk/2020/04/06/dentists-respond-cdos-coronavirus-webinar/ ABOUT THE HOST Brad believes that everyone at any level should be focused on achieving multiple sources of income to create diversity and balance in life. He feels passionate about helping dentists work towards freedom by building wealth in different areas and helping to develop a mindset to improve one’s ability to handle the stresses of clinical life. Still a practising dentist, Brad has implemented strategies to create a practice to allow him to carry out the dentistry he wants whilst continually expanding with loyal staff and patients. These strategies can be adapted to any dentist, whether you are an associate or the practice owner, to help bring back your passion for dentistry. In addition to running a successful private dental practice, he has grown several other dental businesses and as an investor is growing wealth outside of dentistry to help protect his legacy for his growing family. He is chair of the Horsforth Town Team, dedicated to the promotion and development of business in his local area in North Leeds, UK. Due to his track record and down to earth advice, he has become sought after as a mentor and spends part of his time dedicated to mentoring dental professionals about business, mindset and personal development.
