When Brooklyn's Big Crown Records was a nascent label, one of the first artists that founder El Michels Affair signed was The Shacks, and in fact, Shannon Wise was only 17 at the time and they had to wait until her 18th birthday to sign the contract. Along with Max Shrager the duo made a lot of music together, toured the world, were placed on impactful, global ad campaigns and released their debut album but, alas, the band broke up in 2020 before finishing their sophomore album even though they were very prolific and wrote many good songs. Thanks to the label, the new compilation Big Crown Vaults Vol. 2 offers unreleased tracks, including the very beautiful “Gentle.”

While on tour in the early 70s, guitarist Hank Swarn had been writing and collecting songs. There he started a collaboration with Portland soulstress Shirley Nanette that led to a full album “Never Coming Back” in 1973. The album saw little exposure until now, when Big Crown Records decided to breathe it new life. “People Are Thinking” is a timeless track from the lost treasure.

Sunny Ozuna became a star straight out of high school back in the ‘50s, and has been a shining light in the Chicano/Lowrider Soul pantheon ever since. Thanks to Big Crown Records, Ozuna's San Antonio-based Sunny & The Sunliners' music has been enjoying reissues, including the 7-inch A-side of “I Can Remember,” a cult classic for fanatic fans.

Leon Michels grew up in New York, picking up the Saxophone while he was in high school. Lady Wray - "Melody (feat. Melody Bloom Bacote)" from the 2021 album Piece of Me on Big Crown Records. Nicole Wray's musical career is a long and winding one, with a series of highs like collaborating with Missy Elliot and then getting signed to her label, a certified gold single with 1998's “Make It Hot,” and doing background vocals for The Black Keys and Lee Fields. Her lows, on the other hand, were devastating. A series of re-signings to various labels from Goldmind to Roc-A-Fella to Def Jam to Dame Dash Music Group led to album pushback after album pushback, stalling her career in a massive way. In truth, she should've been an R&B superstar. Thankfully, Wray didn't give up because her latest record under the name Lady Wray, January's Piece of Me, is a brilliant blend of soul, R&B and hip hop that feels like an instant classic. Our Song of the Day, “Melody,” is a touching ode to the profound love she's come to feel from her daughter. A stripped-down guitar ballad, Wray exudes raw emotion over the finger-picked melody. The voice of her daughter sweetly asking, “Is that a star?' comingles with her sometimes strained, cracked voice for a moment that feels intimate and very real. Aujourd'hui dans La Potion, un musicien profondément habité : Liam Bailey ! Depuis plusieurs mois sur Nova, on vous joue White Light de Liam Bailey, un morceau échappé d'Ekundayo, le deuxième album du songwriter britannique, paru le 13 novembre dernier chez Big Crown Records. Un disque composé avec LE maître ès-groove Leon Michels, mêlant habilement riddims jamaïcains et soul sensible, R&B mélancolique et dub analogique à la Lee Perry sans jamais se complaire dans le vintage pour autant. Entre les lignes, le soulman de Nottingham se dévoile, écorché vif et poétique.Ekundayo signifie "et le chagrin devient la joie" en yoruba.
