About this episode: Since the mapping of the human genome in 2003, scientists have sought data from Indigenous and isolated populations. But often that research doesn't translate into better health care for the groups whose biological specimens informed it. In this episode: all about the Native Biodata Consortium, a research organization that collects, stores, and shares data from indigenous environments and communities. Guest: Joseph Yracheta, Pūrepecha, is a biomedical researcher and the executive director of the Native Biodata Consortium. Host: Dr. Josh Sharfstein is vice dean for public health practice and community engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a faculty member in health policy, a pediatrician, and former secretary of Maryland's Health Department. Biodata for Michael A. CremoThe soul that I am entered its present body at the moment I was conceived in the fall of 1947. I appeared from my mother's womb on July 15, 1948, in Schenectady, New York. That birth was probably one of millions I have experienced since I left my real home in the spiritual world. My mother tells me that when I was an infant, she would give me alphabet soup, and sometimes I would not eat it, but would just spell out words in the bowl. From that, I take it that I must have practiced writing in many previous existences. In this life, I recall always having wanted to be a writer."From the very beginning, my life has been a spiritual quest for love and truth. My father served as an American Intelligence Officer for the United States Air Force, and from that time my life was one of periodic change and travel. I went to high school at an American school in Germany and spent my vacations traveling all over Europe. Once, in the spring of 1965, in a youth hostel in Stockholm, I met some kids who had been to India and back, traveling overland. I decided I would someday do the same thing. I also became deeply interested in Eastern philosophy, particularly Indian esoteric teachings. I kept travel diaries, wrote poetry, and tried my hand at autobiographical short fiction."During my last year of high school in St. Petersburg, Florida, I took a creative writing course. The next year I entered George Washington University. Over the next two years, I became immersed in the counterculture and gradually gave up my plans to enter government service. I continued my investigations into Eastern philosophy and esoteric spiritual teachings."In 1968 I left college and went to Europe on a voyage of self-discovery. I took a boat from Haifa to Istanbul, where the pull toward the East was so strong that I found myself heading overland to India. I got as far as Tehran, lost my nerve, and turned back."After carefully studying the Bhagavad-gita, a gift of some Hare Krishna people at a Grateful Dead concert, I decided that I should absorb myself in the yoga of devotion to the mysterious Lord Krishna. Later I moved to Los Angeles to join the staff of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, and to write for the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT). By 1980 I was regarded as an accomplished writer. To date, the books written and edited by myself and other BBT staff have sold more than ten million copies and have been translated into many languages."With Dr. Richard L. Thompson, a founding member of the Bhaktivedanta Institute, I began a series of books aimed at both scholarly and popular audiences. The first to be published was Forbidden Archeology: The Hidden History of the Human Race. This book shows that archaeologists and anthropologists, over the past one hundred and fifty years, have accumulated vast amounts of evidence showing that humans like ourselves have existed on this planet for tens of millions of years. We show how this evidence has been suppressed, ignored, and forgotten because it contradicts generally-held ideas about human evolution." "In lecture presentations on Forbidden Archeology to scientific and lay audiences around the world I see a new consciousness emerging that integrates science and religion into a cohesive paradigm of reality.www.michaelcremo.comhttps://tovp.org/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/earth-ancients_1/support.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2790919/advertisement
In the early 1990s, Carletta Tilousi was one of hundreds of people from the Havasupai Nation who gave blood samples to Arizona State University researchers. They hoped to discover why type 2 diabetes was an epidemic in their remote community in the Grand Canyon. The Havasupai never did get any answers about diabetes, and for over a decade they had no idea their blood samples were being used by other researchers for projects that had nothing to do with diabetes. Many companies collect personal data - names, birthdays, interests, payment information, and geolocation. But there's no data more private and sensitive than biological data. So what happens when that information is used without consent? Carletta recalls the day she found out the tribe's samples were being used without consent, the anguish the research caused, and how the Havasupai fought to bring their blood back home. Linda Thielova, OneTrust's Global Data Protection Officer and Head of Privacy Centre of Excellence, explains why the Havasupai's story is no ordinary privacy violation, and how organizations can build trust-driven relationships around data.

Di waktu sekolah dulu, kita kenapa ya punya binder? Padahal sekolah cuma pakai buku tulis biasa. #throwbacktime #kilasbalik #tbt #nostalgia #waktuitu #binderbiodata #generasi2000an #padawaktuitu

Mending broken trust may be a first step for investigators who want to increase the participation of Native people in medical research. “There's such a history of extractive research in Indigenous communities, such that ‘research' and ‘science' are sometimes dirty words,” said Navajo geneticist and bioethicist Krystal Tsosie.Poor communication and a lack of transparency are among the missteps that have eroded the trust Indigenous communities have in medical research. And that mistrust has contributed to the underrepresentation of Native people in clinical trials. In 2018, Tsosie co-founded the Native BioData Consortium, a research institute led by Indigenous scientists. The consortium is working to improve health equity by actively engaging community members in the research process. When the group collects biological samples from Native tribes, they are stored on sovereign Native American land and made accessible only to researchers who are prioritizing Indigenous health needs. “The benefits are directly rolled back into the people and their communities without a profit to outside entities,” Tsosie said.Episode 10 explores the history of exploitation of Indigenous communities by outside researchers and some of the health consequences of being left out of medical trials.Click here for a transcript of the episode.Voices from the Episode: Dr. Dakotah Lane – Executive medical director of the Lummi Tribal Health ClinicKrystal Tsosie — Twitter – Co-founder and ethics and policy director for the Native BioData ConsortiumSeason 4 of “American Diagnosis” is a co-production of KHN and Just Human Productions. Our Editorial Advisory Board includes Jourdan Bennett-Begaye, Alastair Bitsóí, and Bryan Pollard. To hear all KHN podcasts, click here.

At Base, your own data, along with deep expertise from an advisory board of functional medicine doctors, inform the algorithms. This means you get a distinctly personalized prescription on how to manage your health concerns.Guest Lola Priego, founder and CEO of Base, is an experienced software engineer and former medical student on a mission to help people better understand what is going on in their bodies. She possesses a unique combination of skills to do just that. She studied medicine before transferring to engineering at the Technical University of Madrid and earned a master's degree in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Illinois Institute of Technology. While struggling with her own health problems, she identified major pain points in the healthcare system like lack of access to personalized health data. She created Base to solve this issue with a data-driven approach that also provides actionable diet and lifestyle recommendations. Base gets to the root cause of health concerns through analyzing biodata like hormones, nutrition, and vitamin deficiencies to get to the core of why you feel “off.” Base provides testing options that usually are not available at a primary care doctor's office (they're often only offered by specialists). Convenience is built into the lab testing process. Base's blood and saliva tests gets to the root of issues like stress, anxiety, fatigue, and brain fog. Here's what Base and its accompanying app offer you so you can take control of your own biology and make meaningful life changes:Regular testing tells you what's going on with your biology.Your own data informs recommendations on how to improve your diet, stress, energy, sleep, and sex drive. You can track your results over time, get help from a team of online experts, and set specific health goals.Because it's your own health data, there are privacy issues at play you have to know about. For more than two decades, Michael Allen Z Prime has pioneered the art of making music in collaboration with plants and fungi. His albums: L-Fields, One Hour As Peyote, Borneo, and The Ascent Of Sap were the first to be made in collaboration with the bioelectrical fields of plants and fungi. In his work, the fluctuations in pitch and rhythm that you hear directly follow the fluctuations of the bioelectrical fields of the organisms he is working with. Michael has presented his plant and fungal sound installations at venues around the world, including The Mendel Museum (Brno), the NTT InterCommunication Center (Tokyo), the Halles de Schaarbeek (Brussels), the Arnolfini Gallery (Bristol), the Centre for Experimental and Improvised Music (Madrid), and the old Franciscan Abbey on Sherkin Island (Ireland). His recordings of fungi have also been featured on the BBC. Michael is also a qualified ecologist, and his work in that field led him to establish the Comillane Gardens botanical gardens and nature reserve on Cape Clear Island, 10 miles south of the Irish mainland. More Boosters, For More People This week, an FDA advisory committee met to pore over data and debate the role of COVID vaccine boosters. And on Thursday, they voted to recommend Moderna boosters for older Americans, as well as people in certain at-risk groups. This recommendation came just a few weeks after the FDA authorized a Pfizer booster for similar individuals. The recommendations of the panel regarding boosters for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, as well as the idea of mixing and matching different vaccine and booster types, will now go to FDA officials. The CDC will also weigh in. Amy Nordrum, commissioning editor at MIT Technology Review, joins Ira to talk about the vaccine meeting and other topics from the week in science—including the FDA authorization of an e-cigarette, efforts to map the brain, mysterious radio signals from space, and a mission to explore asteroids near Jupiter. Indigenous-Led Biology, Designed For Native Communities Monday was Indigenous Peoples' Day here in the United States: a holiday to honor Native Americans and their resilience over many centuries of colonialism. Due to a long history of discrimination, Native Americans face stark health disparities, compared to other American populations. Illnesses like chronic liver disease, diabetes, and respiratory diseases are much more common in Native communities. This is where the Native BioData Consortium (NBDC) comes in. It's a biobank, a large collection of biological samples for research purposes. What sets this facility apart from others is its purpose—the biological samples are from indigenous people, and the research is led by indigenous scientists. This is important, say the founders, because for too long, biological samples from Native people have been used for purposes that don't benefit them. Joining Ira to talk about the importance of having a biobank run by indigenous scientists are three foundational members of the project: Krystal Tsosie, co-founder and ethics and policy director of the NBDC and PhD candidate in genetics at Vanderbilt University, Joseph Yracheta, executive director and laboratory manager of the NCDC, and Matt Anderson, assistant professor of microbiology at Ohio State University and NCDC board member. Indigenous Activists Helped Save Almost A Billion Tons Of Carbon Per Year This summer, Science Friday and other media outlets covered the protests against an oil pipeline project in northern Minnesota, where Canadian company Enbridge Energy was replacing and expanding their existing Line 3 infrastructure. Native American tribes in Minnesota—whose lands the pipeline would pass through and alongside—organized protests, direct action, and other resistance against the project. The pipeline was completed, and began moving tar sands oil at the beginning of October. But the protests and their non-Native allies drew arrests, news coverage, and social media attention to the debate over continued drilling of fossil fuels. Before Line 3, there were protests at the Dakota Access Pipeline, which was completed against the wishes of the nearby Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and the Keystone XL pipeline, which President Biden ultimately cancelled after objections and lawsuits from two Native American communities in Montana and South Dakota. So far, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has remained un-drilled, despite multiple attempts, with help from vocal opposition by Alaska's Gwich'in people. A new report from two advocacy groups does the math on how much carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas emissions these cancelled or delayed projects would have emitted in the last 10 years. According to their calculations, Indigenous resistance to pipelines and other fossil fuel projects has saved the U.S. and Canada 12% of their annual emissions, or 0.8 billion tons of CO2 per year. Ira talks to the co-authors, Dallas Goldtooth of the Indigenous Environmental Network, and Kyle Gracey from Oil Change International, about the value of tallying these emissions in the fight to prevent future oil projects. Plus, why Native American protesters and their allies deserve credit for keeping fossil fuels in the ground—and the bigger environmental justice issue of pipeline projects alongside Native land.
For decades, non-Indigenous scientists have taken samples from Indigenous peoples for future studies, often without clear consent. But a new generation of Indigenous scientists are revolutionizing biomedical research, asking important questions about who controls the research process and the data derived from it.

Today on Mushroom Hour we are blessed by the presence of Noah Kalos, founder of the groundbreaking Youtube and social media channels “MycoLyco”. This work is a blend of his passions for nature, mycology and electronic music. He originally got hooked on electronic music production at the age of 17, but in the past 6 years Noah took that passion to the next level, getting deep into digital music hardware and electrical engineering. Noah majored in studio art at Oberlin College and then spent 5+ years living in the woods transitioning between outdoor roles as a camp counselor and nature therapist. During his time in the wild, he became familiar with all kinds of wild foods and has been a longtime mycology enthusiast. In the wake of the pandemic, Noah decided to focus on growing mushrooms. His plan was to convert his music studio into a mycology lab, but after a fateful connection between mycelium and synth electrodes, the studio and lab became one in the same. Now with his MycoLyco project, Noah has been giving us all a window into the incredible musical frequencies of fungi. You ask, we deliver! After binge watching the Netflix show 'Indian Matchmaking', the Doc and I (being Indian ourselves) had to dive into everything this show has to offer. The matchmaker herself, the matchees, their suitable candidates, the parents, and all the masala filled drama that only Indian culture can provide. We dissect the show and sprinkle it with our own views on arranged marriage. So much 'gupshup' that we had to split it over two episodes! Go binge watch the show (you will not regret it), come listen to the podcast, share with your friends, and remember to give us your feedback on our instagram page @EncylopediaOfDating

Chlorophytum comosum and Homo sapien sending BioData to Midi. I am currently without Mycelium, all of the Mycelium was buried in Selfoss in my friend's garden. Soon I return to Toronto and start growing a massive sculptural piece towards Nuit Blanche, Toronto which is taking place Sept 29th. Meanwhile, there was a beautiful Spider plant in my friend's apartment so, I placed two sets of electrodes onto it and one set onto myself ;) this is the result of that! xo
Artist Brandy Green sat and worked clay while her BioData was translated to Midi. Brandy Green uses ceramics to explore human personification in rocks. In researching how different rocks are formed and what qualities they possess, she assigns an emotional connotation which is palpable in her sculptural work. Follow Brandy's work on Instagram, @Boxing_Betta Brandy was an artist in residence at Gullkistan Centre for Creativity.
