“Praise and Blame are all the same.” It's one of my favorite quotes from the book, 5-Star QB. And it's so much easier said than done. For Rutgers wideout KJ Duff, that is spot on as he is one of the nations top wideouts and not enough people know about him - until now. I've called KJ Duff's games the last two seasons, the one-handed grabs, the 241-yard afternoon against Purdue, but I'd never sat across from him until this past summer. So I did the only thing you might do if you met this star playmaker: I pulled up a video I knew he'd recognize and asked him to take me through it.And that is where today's Y-Option podcast, fueled by our founding sponsor 76, keeping you on the GO GO GO, begins. The video is a ten-year-old on a Long Island youth field wearing one blue glove and the ball naturally coming his way. He tipped it to himself, caught it, and the clip ended up in a Colin Kaepernick Nike commercial before he'd ever played a down of high school ball. “Numbers started calling,” he told me. “I didn't really think it was real.” No NIL check was waiting for him back then. We laughed about that. But what stuck with me wasn't the play, it was how careful he's been since not to let it define him. “I never want to come across as the cocky guy,” he said.“Play Big.”That's the phrase his receivers coach, Dave Brock, has drilled into him since a summer camp before Duff's sophomore year of high school, back when most programs looked at a 6-foot-6, 200-pound kid and saw a tight end. One school told him to get to 250. Duff knew better. Coach Brock knew better too, and told him so before there was ever an offer on the table: keep working, we're gonna keep watching. That's the relationship that outlasted every other recruiting pitch he'd get.Because here's what he told me that he hadn't said out loud before: this offseason, he was ready to leave. He called Coach Brock. He called Coach Greg Schiano. Instead of a hard sell, they asked him a question, figure out what actually matters MOST to you, and he did it the way he does everything, with a notebook, pros and cons, still sitting in a drawer at home. “I could go play in front of 105,000 people somewhere else,” he said. “But that atmosphere alone isn't going to get me to the NFL. The people I'm around, that matters.” He didn't dress up how hard the process was. “Some of the most stressful times of my life,” he said. “Back and forth, back and forth.”He announced he was staying at a Rutgers basketball game in front of the AD and the governor. The standing ovation caught him off guard. I think it was the building thanking a young man for choosing to be home. Not just being another name in the portal at a new school for 6 months, but a player who was thinking about bringing his own children back here one day to remind them that Chasing What Matters, with clarity, confidence and discipline is not easy, but it is worth it.I asked him, finally, what his intention is for this season. No pause.“First intention is I want to win,” he said.Praise and blame are all the same. Legacy is the stat that compounds.Go play big KJ, I'll be rooting for you.Much love and stay steady,YogiY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. In this episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B is joined by super producer A-King and Jason “Jah” Lee, for a timely conversation covering hip-hop culture, media legacy, politics, sports, race, and misinformation. The episode opens with Mandii's monologue and a preview of the week's biggest conversations [00:57 ], before A-King introduces Dreamville's new 144-page print magazine, The Falloff [ 02:28 ]. The crew celebrates the publication's commitment to long-form hip-hop journalism and reflects on its featured tribute to Combat Jack, using the moment to discuss the enduring impact of The Combat Jack Show on podcasting, rap journalism, and today's media landscape [ 04:02 ][ 08:33 ]. After Jason joins the conversation, the crew jokes about missing Jay-Z's historic Yankee Stadium performances and the cultural significance surrounding the concerts [13:07 ], before Mandii recaps her experience working Essence Festival and exploring New Orleans, sharing observations about the city's culture, music, and community [ 14:26 ]. That experience leads into an unexpected encounter with Hebrew Israelite street preachers on Canal Street, prompting an honest discussion about ideology, misogyny, and religious extremism [ 19:50 ][ 28:11 ]. The conversation then returns to Jay-Z, as the crew revisits his Yankee Stadium concerts [ 29:33 ], including a humorous detour before breaking down his viral freestyle and the political references woven throughout the performance [ 34:13 ][ 38:00 ]. The hosts unpack Jay-Z's comments surrounding Target boycotts, Colin Kaepernick, and corporate activism [ 40:20 ], while clarifying misconceptions about Kaepernick's NFL settlement and the persistent myths surrounding non-disclosure agreements [ 48:09 ][ 52:12 ]. They also examine the importance of offering thoughtful criticism without falling into fan culture or blind loyalty [ 55:18 ], before debating whether modern boycotts remain effective tools for creating lasting change [ 57:19 ]. The latter half of the episode turns toward justice and public accountability with updates in the Nolan Wells case, including discussions surrounding independent investigations and Colin Kaepernick's support for funding a private autopsy [ 58:43 ]. The hosts examine the ongoing concerns many Black families have about safety in predominantly white spaces, institutional accountability, and recurring patterns that continue to shape public trust [ 01:03:28 ][01:08:59 ], while reflecting on allyship, proximity, and the responsibilities of those who claim to stand in solidarity [01:15:26 ]. Closing out the episode, the crew reacts to the political controversy surrounding Caitlin Clark and the WNBA, discussing a letter from Republican lawmakers alleging racial bias against the league's biggest star [ 01:18:26 ]. The hosts unpack the intersections of race, misogyny, media narratives, and "white knighting" in women's sports [01:22:00 ][ 01:33:49 ], before addressing Kodak Black's comments suggesting a "KKK" alliance involving Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar [ 01:37:46 ]. The conversation concludes by firmly debunking the false online claim that the Ku Klux Klan was originally founded by Black people, emphasizing the importance of historical accuracy, responsible media consumption, and challenging misinformation before it spreads [ 01:41:21 ]. The episode wraps with final reflections and the crew's signature sign-off [ 01:53:31 ], delivering another thought-provoking blend of cultural commentary, historical context, and informed debate. Send us Fan MailKen welcomes back professor, author, and activist Dr. David Dark to discuss his new book, We Become What We Normalize. David shares the recent tragedy on Belmont University's campus in the shooting of the popular freshman, accomplished musician Jillian Ludwig . He tells us about the impact of this horrible incident on his students. The entire nation took note - raising the issue of gun control. David asks a provocative question: "Am I responsible for the lies that other people voice in my presence unchallenged?" When we are silent, we normalize. The conversation picks up Part I - discussing David's assertion that all of us -because we are human - are "religious." There exists good and bad/toxic and healthy religion. We must apply critical thinking to discern. Dr. Dark agrees with Christopher Hitchens that there is a form of religion that "poisons everything." To illustrate, they consider a diverse collection of individuals including Colin Kaepernick, Howard Thurman, Rush Limbaugh, and Donald Trump. In conclusion, David shares his long-time work in the Tennessee prison system - regrettably, a for-profit enterprise.David Dark - PART 1 Life's Too Short To Pretend We Aren't ReligiousSupport the showBecome a Patron - Click on the link to learn how you can become a Patron of the show. The people melting down over Jaxson Dart introducing a president are the same emotional hall monitors who spent years telling America that dissent was sacred when Colin Kaepernick took a knee.I disagreed with most of what Kaepernick said. I thought parts of it were naive, performative, and unfair to law enforcement officers who actually walk into the fire every day while the keyboard revolutionaries post black squares from climate-controlled apartments. But I still defended his right to do it because that is the damn point of the First Amendment.Freedom of speech does not mean “approved speech from approved people on approved networks.” That's not liberty. That's corporate HR with a rainbow logo and a superiority complex. Now a quarterback introduces a president and suddenly the same crowd starts clutching pearls like the Republic is collapsing because somebody shook hands with orange Voldemort on camera. Spare me. You either believe adults can speak freely in public or you don't. The standard cannot change because the jersey switched teams. The funniest part is the same people who told us kneeling during the National Anthem was “a courageous conversation” now think introducing a president is violence adjacent. America has become a theater production where every extra thinks they're the main character and every disagreement is treated like DEFCON 1 by people whose greatest hardship is low Wi-Fi bars at Starbucks.Sometimes the most American thing you can do is let somebody say something you hate and not demand they be digitally waterboarded for it afterward. That is the difference between liberty and ideological narcotics. And if a grown adult cannot emotionally survive a quarterback introducing a politician, then maybe the problem is not democracy. Maybe the problem is a generation raised to believe disagreement itself is oppression.Freedom is messy. Always has been. You know, George Washington literally had newspapers calling him a tyrant while building the country?Yeah, George Washington didn't demand emotional safe spaces. He crossed an icy river with farmers and literal psychopaths because freedom requires tolerance for friction, not just applause for your own tribe. Some of you would not survive a Thanksgiving dinner in 1997 without filing an HR complaint against your uncle and demanding grandma deplatform the turkey. Send us Fan MailREPRISE - When Wheaton College released it's anticipated Report on Race, there was a glaring omission. A comprehensive self-study over the history of the college had an arbitraty cut-off date of the year 2000. While it was an attempt to be transparent, vulnerable, and forthright over past mistakes, the report failed to address the painful departure of the first African American woman tenured professor, Dr. Larycia Hawkins. Ken reached out to Professor David Dark of Belmont University, an outspoken advocate of Dr. Hawkins and her work. They discuss the Wheaton episode. A very popular professor, Dr. Dark is active on social media and highly regarded for his books, his lectures and social commentary. Ken and David cover many topics including the Nashville political scene. Dr. Dark has a personal connection to The Covenant School, where a mass shoting gained national attention and introduced us to the "Tennessee Three" - legislators who made "Good Trouble" on the floor of the legislature demanding a debate on gun control. In 2020, Kwame Alexander was feeling the weight of being Black in America and didn't know how to make sense of his feelings. So, he made sense of them through his book of poetry, Light For The World To See: A Thousand Words On Race And Hope. It's three poems on three historic events: the murder of George Floyd, Colin Kaepernick's protests, and Barack Obama being elected president. Alexander told NPR's Rachel Martin he wrote this as a call for Black people to remember their humanity. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedaySee pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

Will and Clay compare their accounts of Woke culture's slow creep into sports during their time at mainstream sports outlets, from Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the National Anthem and the push for transgender inclusion in sports, all the way to the ongoing course correction we're seeing today.
