Trusting God in the Shaking, A Conflict of Powers Exodus 8 & Genesis 26 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Ephesians 6:12–13 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 2 Timothy 3:12–13 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 1 Peter 5:9–10 These are the same forces that Moses faced in Egypt. These false gods and world rulers are the World SYSTEM opposed to the Rule of God and the Freedom of God's Children. There are those trying to divide us. We are wrestling against the demonic spirits that work through government, the financial system (corporations, e.g.), education, media and communications (news), entertainment, drugs and pornography (sexualization of youth, abuse and trafficking.) These are the same forces that Moses faced in Egypt. These false gods and world rulers are the World SYSTEM opposed to the Rule of God and the Freedom of God's Children. We are in a battle against Spiritual Hosts of Wickedness that manifest through worldly powers: Government, Financial Systems, Politics, Communication Systems, and Religion. God is judging the world's systems but has set apart a place of refuge for the people of God. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your country with frogs. The Nile shall swarm with frogs that shall come up into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed and into the houses of your servants and your people, and into your ovens and your kneading bowls. The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your servants.” ' ” Exodus 8:1–4 Exodus 8: 16-24 What does Goshen mean? "Drawing Near" While God is judging the world's systems, he has set apart a place of refuge for the people of God. He has provision in the midst of the shaking. How Did God Judge Egypt: Religiously: the gods of Egypt and the magicians were no match for Yahweh Governmentally and Politically: Pharaoh was impotent before God's sovereign will. Militarily: Horse and Rider were Thrown into the sea. Economically: They stripped the Egyptians of their gold and silver. Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech king of the Philistines. Gen 26:1 And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him. (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.) And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.” Genesis 26:12–16 When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army, Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?” They said, “We see plainly that the Lord has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.” Genesis 26:26–29

The Censorship-Industrial Complex, Part 2

Public

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2023 14:49

Nine months ago, I testified and provided evidence to Congress about the existence of a Censorship Industrial Complex, a network of government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, government contractors, and Big Tech media platforms that conspired to censor ordinary Americans and elected officials alike for holding disfavored views.I regret to inform the Subcommittee that the scope, power, and law-breaking of the Censorship Industrial Complex are even worse than we had realized back in March. Two days ago, my colleagues and I published the first batch of internal files from “The Cyber Threat Intelligence League,” which show US and UK military contractors working in 2019 and 2020 to both censor and turn sophisticated psychological operations and disinformation tactics, developed abroad, against the American people. Many insist that all we identified in the Twitter Files, the Facebook Files, and the CTIL Files were legal activities by social media platforms to take down content that violated their terms of service. Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and other Big Tech companies are privately owned and free to censor content. And government officials are free to point out wrong information, they argue. But the First Amendment prohibits the government from abridging freedom of speech, the Supreme Court has ruled that the government “may not induce, encourage or promote private persons to accomplish what it is constitutionally forbidden to accomplish,” and there is now a large body of evidence proving that the government did precisely that. What's more, the whistleblower who delivered the CTIL Files to us says that its leader, a “former” British intelligence analyst, was “in the room” at the Obama White House in 2017 when she received the instructions to create a counter-disinformation project to stop a "repeat of 2016."The US Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Information Security Agency (CISA) has been the center of gravity for much of the censorship, with the National Science Foundation financing the development of censorship and disinformation tools and other federal government agencies playing a supportive role.Emails from CISA's NGO and social media partners show that CISA created the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP) in 2020, which involved the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO) and other US government contractors. EIP and its successor, the Virality Project (VP), urged Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms to censor social media posts by ordinary citizens and elected officials alike. In 2020, the Department of Homeland Security's CISA violated the First Amendment and interfered in the election, while in 2021, CISA and the White House violated the First Amendment and undermined America's response to the Covid pandemic by demanding that Facebook and Twitter censor content that Facebook said was “often-true,” including about vaccine side effects. But the abuses of power my colleagues and I have documented go well beyond censorship. They also include what appears to be an effort by government officials and contractors, including the FBI, to frame certain individuals as posing a threat of domestic terrorism for their political beliefs. All of this is profoundly unAmerica. One's commitment to free speech means nothing if it does not extend to your political enemies. In his essential new book, Liar in a Crowded Theater: Freedom of Speech in a World of Misinformation, Jeff Kosseff, a law professor at the United States Naval Academy, shows that the widespread view that the government can censor false speech and/or speech that “causes harm” is mostly wrong. The Supreme Court has allowed very few constraints on speech. For example, the test of incitement to violence remains its immediacy. In the face of human fallibility, and the complexity of reality, America's founders and others worldwide long ago decided that it was best to let people speak their minds almost all the time, particularly about controversial social and political issues.I encourage Congress to defund and dismantle the governmental organizations involved in censorship. That includes phasing out funding for the  National Science Foundation's Track F, “Trust & Authenticity in Communication Systems,” and its “Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC)” track. I would also encourage Congress to abolish CISA in DHS. Short of taking those steps, I would encourage significant guard rails and oversight to prevent such censorship from happening again. Finally, I would encourage Congress to consider making Section 230 liability protections contingent upon social media platforms, known in the law as “interactive computer services,” to allow adult users to moderate their own legal content, through filters they choose, and whose algorithms are transparent to users.I would also encourage Congress to prohibit government officials from asking the platforms from removing content, which the Supreme Court may or may not rule unconsitutional next year when it decides on the Missouri v. Biden case. Should the Court somehow decide that government requests for censorship are constitutional, then I urge Congress to require such requests be reported publicly and instantaneously so that such censorship demands occur in plain sight.Public is a reader-supported publication, and thus free from advertiser and investor pressures. (businesses he founded in 1979 and renamed in 2002 under the trading name of eShare Communications, Inc.), Mr. Szlam and wife Halina took the companies from one-employee business operating out of their garage and evolved it into a publicly traded, profitable debt-free global leader. The innovations and business solutions conceived by Melita Int'l and Inventions Inc laid the foundation for Call Centers and the intelligent Customer Interaction Management (CIM) industry, with its presence in 45 countries. Company's first innovation, the auto dialer and inbound/outbound call processing systems were used by schools to alert parents of child's absence and by utility companies for emergency notifications and deployment of service personnel.    Mr. Szlam's personal vision, and the foundation of his business philosophy, is to provide solutions that enhance communications and benefit people around the world. Throughout Mr. Szlam's career, he has been a driving force behind establishing contact center industry standards, including: student truancy dialers, answer detection, predictive dialing, Caller ID, inbound/outbound call blending, skills-based intelligent call routing, announcing ‘predicted hold time' with options for call back, Computer Telephony Interface (CTI) enabling PABXs to serve Call Centers, etc., while building solutions based on innovative technologies and human factors. As a prolific and active inventor, Mr. Szlam's name is associated with more than 50 US and International patents and more than 100 pending applications throughout the world, for hundreds of technological inventions and business solutions, including technologies upon which global contact center industry and mobile telecommunications are built today.  Listen to this illuminating Sharkpreneur episode with Aleksander Szlam about inventing our modern communication system. “Hours!” she said. “I spent HOURS on my Sunday afternoon grading just late work alone, and then you want to know what I had to do the rest of the week?” I could almost guess what it was, “call parents” she said, exacerbated. My teacher friend went on to explain how as it was the end of the quarter and grades were due soon, it was that time of the year that comes around four times per year to communicate to parents whose child is near or actually failing a course. I squinted and turned my head to the side to lessen the blow of her answer as I asked, “how long did it take to contact parents?” Three days after school, she said, until well past 5pm. And I never got to them all. We've all been there. We've all been in a place where something in our teaching lives is taking up way more hours than we want it to, or than is healthy. Whether that's because we're new at it and haven't developed the processes to make it a quick process, or we just straight up don't like doing it. Either way, it's not helping you continue to love your job. The FCC estimates that in 2014, over 10,000 lives could have been saved if only there had been a way for 911 telecommunicators to identify the specific location of 911 callers. It may come as a surprise to many that the technology currently used by 911 systems dates back to the 1960s, and is, therefore, unable to accommodate lifesaving data, such as the location of a caller, the severity of a car crash, or the number of individuals who may be trapped in a burning building.  Considering that over 650,000 911 calls are made across the US every day—many of which are being made by callers who are experiencing the worst moments of their lives—RapidSOS, an advanced emergency technology company, has asked the following question: how do we upgrade these outdated analog voice systems to rich data networks that don't just overload the system with info that isn't ultimately lifesaving? They've spent the past four years holding various focus groups with hundreds of 911 centers across the country and partnering with major tech companies in order to provide this lifesaving data during emergencies. RapidSOS now manages 60 percent of US 911 traffic and provides data to over 2,200 different public safety agencies in major US cities, and have seen response times improve by anywhere from 30 seconds to seven minutes; when even a single second can be the difference between life and death, this technology is rightly considered lifesaving. Michael Martin, founder of RapidSOS, joins the podcast to discuss the implementation of this new technology and their plans for international expansion. Everybody talks about poor communication, but few do anything about it. - Hugh Ballou Communication is a Leadership Skill Build good habits and skills for personal communication. Inspire others by your caring actions. This is a process that will take time, but it is worth it. Every group has complications with communications – they talk about communication, but are not effective in addressing the problems. Healthy organizations have healthy communication systems. The systems do not happen automatically, but with a lot of planning and evaluation and changes to allow the plan to fit the particular organizations. One size does not fit all! Healthy communication systems fall into the following categories: Communication Skills: Defining the skills that leaders need to be effective communicators Communication Systems: Defining how communication flows and to whom Communication Plan: Defining the communication for specific programs, events, and/or campaigns. Communication Skills Having the best communication system in the world will not work unless the members are skilled in basic communication skills. One reason that the majority of organizations recognize communication as a major issue is two-fold: first, there is no thought-out plan and, second, the people do not have basic skills necessary to ensure effective communication. A program of communication skills training should be included in every leadership training program. The following list of skills is only a beginning for discovering the skills necessary to promote and maintain a healthy communication program. Personal connection Speak directly to the person Arrange a time for delivering important messages, don’t catch someone on the fly Deliver sensitive messages privately Use email only to communicate facts; deliver criticism or sensitive information in person, never use email for negative messages Always be respectful People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care – show that you care Choose words thoughtfully  - use “please”, “would you consider,” etc., and stay away from “you have to understand,” etc. Look directly at the other person Have a positive tone and physical stance Be clear and concise Ask “was that clear?” and wait for a response Get directly to the point and use fewer rather than more words Use words that clearly deliver the message Be inclusive Consider who needs to know and what they need to know Deliver the same message to everyone Build consensus Allow for input from those you communicate to Ask for and receive feedback Consider other perspectives If you ask for an opinion, then receive the opinion without being defensive Listen Allow for silence when the other person has finished speaking for clarity Do not be thinking of your response before the other person has finished talking – listen to the entire message Maintain eye contact Ask questions or comment for clarity and to validate that you heard correctly Communication Systems Defining a healthy communication system is the first step. After the system is defined, then, and only then, can a communication plan be developed to fit into the system. The system has three parts: 1. Specific Messages; 2. Channels of Communication; and 3. Who needs to Know  - target groups! Specific Messages The messages themselves need to be very specific and complete - what, when, where, sometimes: who and why. There are two kinds of messages, one-way and two-way. Each has a different function and carries a different message. Be sure not to confuse the two functions. One-way messages keep the community informed and aligned on specific activities, functions, and projects. It is essential to keep members up to date on current activities and facts. This builds support and groups energy for the organization. This is not interactive communication. It is informational communication. Examples of one-way communications are date and time announcements for concerts, meetings, fellowship activities, etc., updates on projects, financial updates, and updates on operations such as search committees, construction, financial campaigns, and recruitment programs. Two-way messages encourage input and dialogue from a specific target group. This builds community and ownership for projects and campaigns. More complex issues need two-way conversations and dialogue such as vision and value formation, financial planning and evaluation, program evaluation and revision, and volunteer recruitment. Never use email for two-way dialogue. Some people are not comfortable with computers. Some personalities use the opportunity for personal needs and indirect criticism. Email feedback gives opportunities for and actually empowers passive-aggressive behavior. The same rule applies to surveys. Getting input on issues is an opportunity to engage members in process and build relationships. It is an opportunity for education and ministry for leaders. Using focus groups to gain support and get feedback is far more effective than surveys, anyway. Developing a strong program for focus groups will strengthen any organization by connecting members as stakeholders and flushing out potential leaders. Empower healthy behavior and create healthy systems. Summary of the two types of specific messages: One-way messages Informational No need or opportunity for discussion Meeting dates and times Project updates Financial issues Operations updates Two-way messages Invite dialogue Complex and not easy to talk about Vision Values Strategic issues Practical solution finding Channels of Communication Personal Channels Events Staff meetings Committee meetings Board meetings Organizational meetings Called meetings Personal relationships and conversations System Channels Website Email Newsletter Flyers External Media Signage Who needs to Know Internal Target Groups Employees (be specific) Members Board Committees Management Projects or groups Different departments Geographic areas External Target Groups Media Other similar organizations Organizations: civic, service, etc. Government: libraries, schools, legislature Community leaders Other nonprofits Communication Plan An effective communication plan is essential for every program in the organization. For example, when a planning meeting or a long-range plan or strategic plan is concluding, take time to identify the specific messages from that session. Many groups overlook this item because they think it is obvious or they don’t think about this detail. In the absence of information, members make up their own information, which is typically incorrect. So why not give them the correct information? Distributing the specific messages to the correct people builds trust and creates ownership for projects and campaigns, such as strategic planning or a financial campaign. It is important to identify the specific message and, then, who needs to know. Don’t let the process die here. Identify who will send the message and how they will do it. Distinguish messages that are confidential and must stay within the group and messages that need to be distributed internally and externally with the target audience identified. The intentionality of planning communications will not only save time, prevent duplicated or overlooked tasks and hurt feelings (for those feeling left out of the process), it will create interest and synergy within the membership for the process or campaign. The key components of a communication plan are as follows: Specific Message Who Needs to Know? Who Will Tell Them? How Will They Tell Them? When Will They Tell Them? European Network for Cyber Security Jason Larsen Principal Security Consultant, IOActive The appeal of hacking a physical process is dreaming about physical damage attacks lighting up the sky in a shower of goodness. Let’s face it, after such elite hacking action nobody is going to let one present it even at a conference like DEF CON. As a poor substitute, this presentation will get as close as using a simulated plant for Vinyl Acetate production for demonstrating a complete attack, from start to end, directed at persistent economic damage to a production site while avoiding attribution of production loss to a cyber-event. Such an attack scenario could be useful to a manufacturer aiming at putting competitors out of business or as a strong argument in an extortion attack. Picking up a paper these days it’s easy to find an article on all the “SCADA insecurity” out there associated with an unstoppable attacker with unsophisticated goal of kicking up another apocalypse. Sorry to disappoint excited crowd but formula “Your wish is my command” does not work for control systems. The target plant is not designed in a hacker friendly way. Hopefully by the end of the presentation, the audience will understand the difference between breaking into the system and breaking the system, obtaining control and being in control. An attacker targeting a remote process is not immediately gifted with complete knowledge of the process and the means to manipulate it. In general, an attacker follows a series of stages before getting to the final attack. Designing an attack scenario is a matter of art as much as economic consideration. The cost of attack can quickly exceed damage worth. Also, the attacker has to find the way to compare between competing attack scenarios. In traditional IT hacking, a goal is to go undetected. In OT (operational technologies) hacking this is not an option. An attack will change things in the real world that cannot be removed by simply erasing the log files. If a piece of equipment is damaged or if a plant suddenly becomes less profitable, it will be investigated. The attacker has to create forensic footprint for investigators by manipulating the process and the logs in such a way that the analysts draw the wrong conclusions. Exploiting physical process is an exotic and hard to develop skill which have so far kept a high barrier to entry. Therefore real-world control system exploitation has remained in the hands of a few. To help the community mastering new skills we have developed „Damn Vulnerable Chemical Process“ – first open source framework for cyber-physical experimentation based on two realistic models of chemical plants. Come to the session and take your first master class on complex physical hacking. Marina is Senior Security Consultant at European Network for Cyber Security. Through her life she has accumulated vast hands-on experience in several engineering fields. Most recently she completed her doctoral degree in ICS security at Hamburg University of Technology, Germany. Her research over the last few years has been focused on the bits and peac.hes of the design and implementation of cyber-physical attacks aiming at both physical and economic damage. Marina used her pioneering destructive knowledge for designing process-aware defensive solutions and risk assessment approaches. During her PhD she collaborated with several industrial partners, participated in EU projects and collaborated with cool dudes from the hacking community. She has written more than a dozen papers on the subject of cyber-physical exploitation. Marina gives workshops on cyber-physical exploitation and is a frequent speaker at the leading ICS security and hacking venues around the world. She holds MBA in Technology Management, MSc in Telecommunications and MSc in Information and Communication Systems. Jason Larsen is a professional hacker that specializes in critical infrastructure and process control systems. Over the last several years he has been doing focused research into remote physical damage. Jason graduated from Idaho State University where he worked doing Monte Carlo and pharmacokinetic modeling for Boron-Neutron Capture Therapy. He was one of the founding members of the Cyber-Security department at the Idaho National Labs, which hosts the ICS -CERT and the National SCADA Tested .Jason has audited most of the major process control and SCADA systems as well as having extensive experience doing penetration tests against live systems. His other activities include two years on the Window 7 penetration testing team, designing the anti-malware system for a very large auction site, and building anonymous relay networks. He is currently a Principle Security Consultant for IOActive in Seattle.

Given the proliferation of malware, the integrity of embedded communication systems is becoming a growing concern. Recent compromises to systems such as ATMs and network switches and routers provide evidence of the potential security problems of embedded communication systems. Trusted communication channels that pass sensitive information should only be established after the integrity of the remote system can be assured. Security hardware, such as the Trusted Computing Group's (TCG's) Trusted Platform Module (TPM) provides a mechanism to measure and authenticate the integrity of individual machines. This device can be readily found in many laptops today, however we are unaware of its use as a mechanism for providing or denying communication access to services based on the integrity of remote systems. In this work, we propose PlugNPlay Trust, an integrity framework which is a drop-in solution for providing a hardware root of trust for embedded applications. The PlugNPlay Trust design exploits the static nature of embedded communication systems and independently provides remote attestation and identity verification for the host application using the TPM. This framework, coupled with the attestation and dynamic firewall exception services we authored, enables remote parties to confirm the integrity of embedded communication systems, thereby limiting the effects and the proliferation of malware in compromised systems. Although there are preexisting technologies for interfacing with the TPM directly, we implemented the first prototype for allowing or denying access to networked services based on the trustworthiness of a remote system. The PlugNPlay framework simplifies the integration of existing TPM related tools and provides a ready to use platform for trusted computing research. About the speaker: Raquel Hill is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the School of Informatics and Computing. The PlugNPlay framework simplifies the integration of existing TPM related tools and provides a ready to use platform for trusted computing research.

Recent rapid development of wireless networks of sensors, actuators and identifiers dictates the digitalization of our physical world and the creation of the "internet of things". In this new internet, each wireless device will sense and provide contextual information, of which crucial component are locations of devices and objects. In this talk, we present recent research results in secure computation and verification of locations of wireless devices: we show that current localization systems are highly vulnerable to attacks and we demonstrate that out solutions can prevent these attacks. We further illustrate how location-awareness can help in solving some of the fundamental security challenges of wireless networks, e.g., enabling authenticated and confidential communication without pre-shared keys of credentials. About the speaker: Srdjan Capkun received the Dipl.Ing. Degree in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science from University of Split, Croatia (1998), and the Ph.D. degree in Communication Systems from EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne) (2004). He was a postdoctoral researcher in the Networked & Embedded Systems Laboratory (NESL), University of California Los Angeles and an Assistant Professor in the Informatics and Mathematical Modeling Department (IMM), Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Since September 2006, Srdjan Capkun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, ETH Zurich.
