Abstract: When interacting with objects with unfamiliar dynamics, the sensorimotor system uses haptic information to develop internal representations of the new dynamics. These representations are subsequently used to manipulate the objects by applying predictive forces that comply with the mechanical properties of the objects. In a recent study (Farajian et al. 2020), we showed that when participants evaluated the stiffness of elastic objects, adding artificial tactile stimulation created an illusion of higher stiffness, increasing the grip force control used to interact with the object. Here, we took a step further in understanding how kinesthetic and tactile information is integrated into the control of objects. Specifically, we examined how added skin stretch influenced the learning of novel forces. We found that the extent of force compensation that the participants exhibited depended on the direction of the artificial skin stretch applied simultaneously with the force; learning was enhanced when the skin was stretched in the opposite direction to the external force and diminished when the skin was stretched in the same direction. Strikingly, when the skin stretch stimulation was delivered during probe trials in which the force perturbation was absent, the behavior pattern was flipped, with an increase in force compensation for the same-direction skin stretch stimulation and vice versa. Modeling suggests that these results reflect a unique effect of tactile stimulation during the learning of novel forces; rather than becoming integrated with the dynamic information, it is used by the sensorimotor system as a guidance cue, possibly through explicit mechanisms, providing information on the way to compensate for the forces and optimize movements. We believe that these findings propose a novel instructive role of tactile stimulation during interaction with a dynamic object. This provides a significant potential to leverage these effects in the development of devices aiming to assist and guide users in many human-in-the-loop applications, such as rehabilitation and surgical robotics. Sighing to yourself, you get up off the couch and turn off the whistling electric kettle that you had put on awhile ago. Making yourself some tea and sliding back under the blanket on the couch, you continue to type away at the keys of your laptop, flipping through the pages of your math science textbook rather aimlessly. The Team's distant chatter and Ratchet's beyond distraught tones reach your ears as you listen off to the side. Jack, Miko and Raf had already gone home for the night, leaving just you, the Medic and the young black and yellow Scout with the Base all to yourselves. As the night wears on and sleep doesn't come easy, you find yourself silently observing and admiring Ratchet's handiwork and perseverance, and keeping an eye on Bumblebee, making sure he doesn't wander off. Cuing up some soft music, you allow the sounds of your surroundings and the Autobot Medic's tinkering to begin to soothe your heightened senses. Things will be alright. Optimus will come back to us, and Bee will get his T-Cog back... It'll just take time... And almost as if you'd been thinking aloud, you could've sworn you heard Ratchet mutter, "Time is something we do not have." You dismiss it though and instead, get comfortable on the couch. And soon enough, you find yourself drifting through a slightly restless sleep, not knowing what the future holds, but knowing this: Team Prime is the closest thing you've got to family. --Info-- I own no rights to any sounds used in this video! It's on nights like this when you simply curl up in bed, watching the rain patter against the window, the vastness of darkness almost comforting. Laying there, listening to the sound of the rain and distant thunder, accompanied by whatever news channel was reporting at this hour out in the living room, a new sound pricks your attention. It's a soft series of footsteps - growing closer by the second. And when a tired and bleary eyed Tony Stark makes his way into your view, your heart can't help but feel sorrow. “You alright?” You murmur the question, voice so soft, you're surprised that he even acknowledges you with a slight shake of his head. “Nothing's been the same since New York,” Tony starts, his tone solid, but wavering quickly. Patting the side beside you, your fiancé silently complies, gaze locking with yours. “You experience things and then they're over and you still can't explain them? Gods, aliens, other dimensions… I'm just a man in a can.” He pauses, seeming to contemplate his next few words. “The only reason I haven't cracked up is probably because you moved in, which is great. I love you, I'm lucky, but honey, I can't sleep.” There's a genuine sadness and fear in his eyes - something that you haven't completely seen until this very moment. “Threat is imminent and I have to protect the one thing I can't live without: that's you.” Passing Tony a watery grin, you simply wrap him in an embrace, pulling him down into the sheets with you, keeping him close even as time begins to wear on. “I'm not going anywhere, Tony…” You murmur sleepily, hoping that he'll actually sleep tonight now that he'd gotten some of his concerns off his chest. Cuing up the Spotify app on your phone, a soft assortment of calming piano tracks begin to play. And soon enough, you find yourself drifting, accompanied by Tony's soft snores, the rain, distant thunder and the soothing music. --Info-- I own no rights to any sounds used in this video! Self-imposed ageism is real. I'd be interested in your thoughts about this quote - drop a comment below. In the words of Maggie Kuhn founder Gray Panthers, "The first myth is that old age is a disease, a terrible disease that you never admit you've got, so you lie about your age. Well, it's not a disease—it's a triumph because you've survived. Failure, disappointment, sickness, loss—you're still here." While I know Maggie Kuhn did great work founding the Gray Panthers and was actually a early advocate for not forcing people to retire at age 65 - and had an age-inclusive focus and advocated for college students to be taken more seriously - the thought of equating aging to mere survival of failure, disappointment, sickness and loss to only reflect one side of the coin of aging. Where is the celebration of major life milestones, her achievements, her “wins” in the third-third of her life?  It's one quote, from one moment in time, so I digress...but I hope this makes you think about how you think, and and how WE talk, about aging in 2021. Today's episode picks up with how should we be telling the story of aging? We'll talk more about Reframing Aging to continue the 2-part series of Aging: Words Matter at This Is Getting Old: Moving Toward An Age-Friendly World.  Tune in as Patricia D'Antonio, BSPharm, MS, MBA, BCGP, further elucidates why words matter, particularly regarding how they may generate and promote discrimination, fear, and misconception around aging.   Part One Of 'Aging: Words Matter Part 2.' The Leaders of Aging Organizations collaborated with the FrameWorks Institute, which studied and reflected on the gap between popular views and misconceptions about aging.  They discussed ways to move to more positive narratives that "progress a perspective of older age as a time of challenges and possibilities, counteracting the fatalistic notion that aging outcomes couldn't be even better." How Should We Be Telling The Story Of Aging? We all take cognitive shortcuts to interpret and understand all sorts of experiences, thoughts, and feelings about aging. We take these for granted, and they are primarily automatic assumptions. However, remember that a compelling narrative builds understanding, shifts attitudes, and generates support for policy solutions.   Framing Is About Choices      Frames are choices about how information is presented, what to emphasize, how to explain it, and what to leave unsaid.  When a Frame "works," it shifts thinking in multiple ways— knowledge increases, attitudes improve, and policy support grows. Our goal with this project is to be able to get policies that support us as we age. - Patricia D'Antonio, BSPharm, MS, MBA, BCGP What Should We Do? In our communications, we can make choices that activate productive cues/shortcuts to advance helpful models about aging. It's Important to tell the positive story of aging, but not just any story. We can get people to talk about aging and change the discourse on what people think about it. As we start to do that, ultimately, our goal t is to be able to get policies that support us as we age so we can get that discussion going and get people to start to think about aging differently. Consider the following for a compelling narrative: Why does this narrative matter? Include tested values that we know move the needle on thinking about aging How does this narrative work? Provide explanation   What can we do about it? Offer concrete systemic solutions.  Incorporate the values of Justice and Ingenuity Justice – Highlight that our society should treat older people as equals and ensure meaningful opportunities to contribute Ingenuity – Provide encouragements and positive reinforcements like saying, "We are resourceful and can find new and creative solutions for the challenges that come as we age." Avoid   Equating aging with decline  Cuing individualism  Portraying older people as other   Describing the aging of the population as a crisis  Talking about resources as fixed or finite   Advance ✔️ That context and environment shape decisions and outcomes   ✔️ The value of ingenuity ✔️ Inclusion and the use of "we." ✔️ An explanation that underlying social conditions influence   health, financial security, employment  ✔️ Systemic solutions   Part Two of 'Aging: Words Matter Part 2.' Research Findings: Word Choice Matters! Words like "seniors" and “the elderly" drive thinking that we are less competent as we age. This terms are “othering” rather than being inclusive.  Using words like “older adult” or “older people” - but realize that in using these terms, an 18 year old may think about people in their 50's. References to “older adults” generally call to mind someone in their mid-fifties, which doesn't quite get us as advocates to the age range we want to address “Older people” evokes people aged 60 or older and at the same time brings with it the most positive, least paternalistic view of the age described in the public mind.   So experts need to communicate with the public to make sure that the thinking for Americans is positive about aging because it can shorten your lifespan, and you end up with more health problems because of it.  Impact Of Reframing Aging With AP/ AMA/ APA Style Guides   Adopting the concepts of Reframing Aging will improve how we hear, read about aging in a way that again cues the more productive thinking about aging. The American Medical Association (AMA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and even the Associated Press (AP) have updated their style manuals to adopt language around aging. So instead of using the word "seniors" and "elderly," they refer to older people or be specific about the age group. “The first step in fixing ageism is to raise awareness.” - Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FGSA, FAAN Role Of Implicit Bias Around Aging   Defining Ageism and Implicit Bias?   Ageism is the discrimination of any person of any age—the tendency to regard older people as debilitating. We have some subconscious thoughts about that. It starts when we're very young about taking in information about aging and older people.  Consequently, it becomes thoughts and feelings that you have that you don't even realize. Such thoughts and feelings are implicit biases. We have an implicit bias about many things, but it's the internalized bias tied to how we want to process so much information.    Implicit Biases Can Be Harmful   Implicit biases can be harmful and challenging for all of us to think about that. Some of the things that we work on are we help people develop "well-framed messages." We ask people what they think about aging. They give us their answers which are more around those negative models that we talk about—us versus them, the fatalism, the individualism. We read them well-framed sentences about aging, and a couple of minutes later, we see the difference in how the same people respond. Conclusively, our research shows that communicating a positive understanding of the aging process mitigates sources of implicit bias. We weren't quite PASTED by Nam Jin Yoon's Saturday spectacular, but it definitely took a while for us to GETGOING on this one, as there were a lot of tricky (and fascinating) clues. The winner in that category was surely 32D, Amphibian that Ogden Nash once rhymed with "bottle", AXOLOTL, with honorable mention going to 19D, Holding up the line for?, CUING. Abstract: Understanding how brain activity translates into behavior is a grand challenge in neuroscientific research. Simultaneous computational modeling of both measures offers to address this question. The extension of the dynamic causal modeling (DCM) framework for BOLD responses to behavior (bDCM) constitutes such a modeling approach. However, only very few studies have employed and evaluated bDCM, and its application has been restricted to binary behavioral responses, limiting more general statements about its validity. This study used bDCM to model reaction times in a spatial attention task, which involved two separate runs with either horizontal or vertical stimulus configurations. We recorded fMRI data and reaction times (n=29) and compared bDCM to classical DCM and a behavioral Rescorla-Wagner model using goodness of fit-statistics and machine learning methods. Data showed that bDCM performed equally well as classical DCM when modeling BOLD responses and better than the Rescorla Wagner model when modeling reaction times. Notably, only using bDCM's parameters enabled classification of the horizontal and vertical runs suggesting that bDCM seems to be more sensitive than the other models. Although our data also revealed practical limitations of the current bDCM approach that warrant further investigation, we conclude that bDCM constitutes a promising method for investigating the link between brain activity and behavior. Creating Connections that Matter by Kim Dunn

This week I've been exploring back to basic principles of self-care One of the things COVID-19 has done is strip us of our regular structure, and therefore our cues for eating and exercising. We are at home nearly all the time, we have food around us constantly, there is very little incidental exercise able to happen, which means everything we do must be done with full intent or awareness. And as we are living in a state of fairly constant stress and anxiety, actually doing the basics is harder than what it seems. So, what does back to basics mean? FOOD: First is back to basics food. Increasing whole foods like brown rice oats anything that grows on a tree or in the ground i.e. fruit and vegetables. Drinking water. MOVEMENT: Then it’s back to basics movement. Walking a couple of times a day, standing instead of sitting, stretching,. HABITS: Back to basics eating habits. This includes sitting down to eat, sitting at the table to eat, using crockery and cutlery, tuning in to hungry cues. Below are 11 principles to keep in mind in your back to basics journey. 1. Acceptance. My jeans won’t fit, my back aches, I’m not walking as much as I used to, I feel sluggish. 2. Accountability. Stating to yourself, or publicly what you are working on and would like to do. 3. Support - having someone taking the journey with you. 4. Cuing our behaviour. When I sit down in front of the tv – that is my cue to pick up my crotcheting (not sit and eat pistacchios) 5. Using the ‘When I do this, then I will do that’ strategy. Eg. When I drink this hot water, then I will have my coffee. 6. Doing things mindfully. Sitting at the table to eat. 7. Being prepared. Ending the day with a clean kitchen bench. 8. Mindset. Use simple words – Today I’m going to try to….. 9. Self-compassion. This is not a place for perfection or comparison this is a place of self compassion. We will be doing the best we can with what’s been going on. 10. Goal setting. Little baby goals. And goals that encourage you to do something rather than not do something. Today I’m going to drink one cup of hot water. I’m going to eat one vegetable. Start, not stop goals. 11. Boundaries. Put your little fences in place to keep the cows out. This is particularly important if you’re living without the people who are questioning what you’re doing. This back to basics is for you and you decide where you put your boundary fence. I am cooking one meal tonight and this is what I want to cook and eat. Or I’m not buying any more junk food come into the house. ____________________ How can I feel more connected? Sam Briend graduated from NCAA DIII Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA with a degree in Psychology. He played professional baseball at the Independent level in the CanAm and Pecos Leagues. While he was playing, he began helping to coach at Oglethorpe University where he as a pitching coach and the head strength and conditioning coach. After his playing days, he coached in the Northwoods League, a summer college baseball league, where he was introduced to Mike Rathwell and Kyle Boddy at Driveline Baseball. He then spent 3 years at Driveline Baseball working his way up from a floor trainer to the Director of Player Development. He recently accepted a position as Director of Pitching for the New York Yankees and is entering his second season, first full season, with the organization. In this episode, we take a deep dive into Sam’s background and some of the characteristics that led him to his position he holds today. He talks about his days as an indy ball grinder living in a remodeled barbershop with 20 other guys and how his competitiveness helped him get through it. Sam talks about his ability to take initiative to get things done and how his experience working multiple jobs helped develop that characteristic. We talk about some of the challenges that he faced going from coaching athletes directly to now being in charge of developing the coaches that coach the athletes and we dive into how continuing to train to throw can help ones ability to coach. Listen on iTunes Listen on Stitcher What is the pelvic floor? The pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles at the bottom of our pelvis that is responsible for keeping our organs from falling out. Both men and women have one. Signs of pelvic floor dysfunction… - incontinence (peeing when you workout) - lack of sexual satisfaction - pelvic organ prolapse Causes of pelvic floor dysfunction… - Childbirth - Muscle imbalance (too much or too little tone) The pelvic floor, breath and core… On the inhale, the diaphragm contracts decreasing pressure in the abdominal area and the pelvic floor relaxes. On the exhale, the diaphragm relaxes increasing pressure in the abdominal area and the pelvic floor and abdominals (TVA) contract. When this doesn’t happen we’re more prone to getting core dysfunction, back pain and pelvic floor problems. How to train the pelvic floor and should we do Kegels? There was a Cochran review (read gold standard, evidence based) study about Kegels that found that Kegels are effective to for training the pelvic floor. Doing a Kegel with other exercises could potentially yield an even better result, but this hasn’t been studied yet. Cuing for a Kegel: Imagine your pelvic floor like a 10 story building. On the inhale, let the elevator drop to the basement. On the exhale, lift the pelvic floor up to level 2 or 3 out of 10. On the inhale bring it back to the basement. This can be done lying on your back or sitting. If you’re having prolapse or a lot of pelvic floor dysfunction, it may be easier to do while lying down. If you have a hyperonic pelvic floor focus on letting it turn off. If you have a hypotonic pelvic floor, you want to focus on turning it on. How to do a Kegel in a squat: The highest pelvic floor activation is at the bottom of the squat, so you can think about engaging your pelvic floor as you go down and releasing it as you stand up out of the squat.
