The story of the Kissel brothers, two wealthy siblings murdered on opposite sides of the world within three years of each other. Robert Kissel, a Merrill Lynch executive in Hong Kong, was killed by his wife Nancy in November 2003 in a case that became known internationally as the Milkshake Murder. Less than three years later, his older brother Andrew, a Greenwich, Connecticut real estate developer facing federal fraud charges, was found stabbed to death in his own home. This episode covers both cases in full: the collapse of Robert and Nancy's marriage inside Hong Kong's expatriate finance world, Nancy's two trials and her conviction, overturned conviction, and second conviction, and the murder-for-hire investigation into who killed Andrew, including the eventual pleas, verdicts, and the question of who actually held the knife. The episode closes with where the case stands today and where to watch more, including Dateline NBC, 48 Hours Mystery, American Greed, and the 2008 Lifetime movie The Two Mr. Kissels starring John Stamos. John Henion, director of Netflix's new documentary Untold: The Testimony of Vince Young, joins the show to unpack the rise and fall of the Texas Longhorns legend, from his childhood in Houston's Hiram Clarke neighborhood, raised by his mother and grandmother while his father was in and out of prison, through his legendary run at Texas under Mack Brown, and into the conflict-riddled NFL career that followed. On January 4th, 2006, Vince Young delivered what's still argued to be the greatest individual performance in college football history, 467 total yards and a game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds left, beating USC to give Texas its first national title in 35 years, and the Rose Bowl made him a legend. What came after became a cautionary tale: a bruising relationship with the Tennessee Titans, a leaked Wonderlic score that followed him for years, a very public mental health scare, and a $26 million bankruptcy. The film culminates in how Vince has worked to become the present, hands-on father he never had. This month, on Laura Flanders & Friends, we turn to the state of journalism—at a moment of deep disruption, consolidation, and consequence.  But journalists aren't simply standing by—they're pushing back, reimagining their work, and, in many cases, taking matters into their own hands.   This week we'll hear from the long-running independent collective Third World Newsreel, still thriving in an era some are calling “media carnage,” showing what it looks like to endure—and to resist. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate Description: It's almost unheard of for an independent media collective to survive as long as Third World Newsreel has. Since 1968, they have chronicled some of the most pivotal movements in human history and continue to expand on their collection of over 700 titles. There's lots to learn about how they've adapted through technological revolutions, political persecutions, philanthropic booms and busts — and how the oldest media arts collective in the U.S. is making do in today's “media carnage”, as Laura Flanders puts it. Joining us are JT Takagi, an independent filmmaker, sound recordist, and the longtime executive director of Third World Newsreel. Tami Gold is an artist and activist whose documentaries grapple with everything from imperialism to sex work. Her films include My Country Occupied, Another Brother and Land Rain Fire among many more. Puerto Rican-born Juan Carlos Dávila works in film as well as TV, where he reports on social movements around environmentalism, militarism and the struggles of the working class on the island. His films include The Stand-By Generation, Viequez: An Endless Battle and Drills of Liberation. Join us as we look at the past, present and future of Third World Newsreel and ask how film can be used as a tool for organizing. “I'd say we feel more urgent now than ever before. Every day there's something happening that makes it clear that our rights and liberties, and people's lives all over the world are at stake. Not being in touch with the history and media that shows the truth of what's going on is really decimating people's ability to, as Juan said, know what to follow and what to do.” - JT Takagi “We need to retake the theater, the physical space that is being ignored by the corporations. Perhaps now that is the opportunity that we have . . . A theater is being rented by people who are organizers, and they're using their collective spirit and know-how to organize huge, huge crowds to come.” - Tami Gold “People can shoot stuff with the phone . . . I see a lot in Puerto Rico that people are still wanting to produce with the corporate industry standards. Many young filmmakers like myself tend to think that we need so many personnel to be doing films. Right now we can actually make films with less.” - Juan Carlos Dávila Guests: •  Juan Carlos Dávila: Documentary Filmmaker, Multimedia Journalist, Puerto Rico Correspondent, Democracy Now! •  Tami Gold: Filmmaker, Artist, Activist •  JT Takagi: Executive Director, Third World Newsreel   Watch on YouTube this episode that includes video clips referenced in this episode from Third World Newsreel; PBS World Channel 11:30am ET Sundays and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). Years later, the two married, and Mica became a prominent presence in his church. As their marriage deteriorated, allegations of abuse, coercive control, surveillance, and harassment emerged, and Mica began speaking publicly about abusive relationships. DB Frick and director Julius Olivas talk with Mike about Saving Ferris Butler, their scrappy, sub-$30,000 documentary chasing down the wildest claim in comedy history: that Ferris Butler, a fired 1980-81 Saturday Night Live writer and the mind behind the underground cable-access sketch show Waste Meat News, is the real inspiration for John Hughes's Ferris Bueller. Frick met Butler at a New York open mic fifteen years ago and spent years hearing him make the case; Olivas came aboard after directing Inky, his documentary on forgotten Hollywood ghostwriter Neil Gumbel, and dove into what turned out to be thousands of hours of archival footage. They talk assembling an unlikely roster of SNL alumni and insiders — Denny Dillon, Patrick Weathers, Hugh Fink, Tom "Bones" Malone — thanks to journalist Andy Haugland, tracking down the Del Close connection linking Butler to Hughes, and reuniting Weathers and songwriter Neil Levy on stage for the first time since 1983 at the film's sold-out 40th-anniversary premiere at the Quad Cinema. They also dig into Butler's late-life health struggles, his decades-long marriage to songwriting legend Beverly Ross ("Lollipop"), and why they think his story of scrappy, self-made outsider comedy is bigger than just one Ferris Bueller theory.Visit https://savingferrisbutler.com/ to find out more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Eric Steel's The Bridge  This week Mr. Chavez & I continue our dive into challenging films examining difficult subjects. In 2004 director Eric Steel and his crew focused his camera - day and night/7 days a week - on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Since it's opening in May of 1937, the bridge has been one of the most popular suicide sites in the world. Steel's film attempts to understand the struggle of suicide and (rather unsuccessfully) the appeal of The Golden Gate Bridge for this purpose. Talking with family and friends, friends and loved ones, and in one case a survivor of the jump, Steel's film is a sad and troubling look into the reality of choosing to end one's life. The psychology of suicide is not given nearly enough focus and Steel's film feels empty and unfocused. But what is there . . . the discussions from friends and loved ones, the regret, acceptance, and confusement revealed are heartbreaking. As is often the case with this podcast, the film is a starting point for a discussion that will go far deeper than the film achieves. Take a listen and let us know what you think. [Uncut Conversation] Surviving and Thriving in Turbulent Times Third World Newsreel's Enduring Legacy

    The Laura Flanders Show

Kyle Bylin was switched at birth with Jeremy Morrison in a small North Dakota hospital, and did not learn the truth until he was 36 years old. The discovery came after a years-long trail of Ancestry DNA matches that did not add up, leading him to Morrison's biological aunt. That connection confirmed it: Bylin and Morrison, the only two babies born at Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota, on January 26, 1988, had gone home with each other's bracelets. On this Saturday Series episode, Kate Casey talks with Bylin, who was raised in Adams, North Dakota, by Evelyn Newton and Keith Bylin, about meeting his biological parents, Elizabeth O'Toole and Terry Morrison, for the first time as an adult, the unexpected traits and interests he shares with his biological family, and the identity questions the discovery raised after decades of a settled sense of self. He also discusses what it means to now navigate two sets of parents and the loss that comes with each. Bylin and Morrison's families have since filed a lawsuit against the hospital, which denies responsibility and says records from 1988 no longer exist. Bylin works as an assessment and research librarian and hosts the podcast Infinite Stream, about the impact of artificial intelligence on higher education. In the hope of getting their voices heard some of the prisoners managed to get hold of the phone number for the BBC's Tigrinya language service. One of the journalists working for the service is Aklilu Tsegay and he tells us what it was like to speak to those prisoners, sometimes multiple times a day, when reporting on the story. In India, July saw some of the biggest protests in the country for many years. The protesters were young people, particularly students, and they came together under an unusual symbol, the cockroach. They call themselves the Cockroach Janta Party or CJP, and they are demanding change to the education system in the country. Starting as an online joke a couple of months ago, the CJP is now one of India's most visible youth movements. Was Elvis Presley's generosity as epic as his moves and his music? Author Sally A. Hoedel, says, yes!Sally, who joined us back on Episode 82, returns with her latest book, Destined to Give: The Legendary Generosity of Elvis Presley. It's the third installment in her acclaimed Destined series.Sally traces Elvis' big heart back to his childhood in Tupelo, where growing up in deep poverty taught him that survival was collaborative and it depended upon neighbors helping neighbors. Elvis' primary goal was not to see his name in lights but to keep the lights on for his parents who had poured their efforts into enabling Elvis to stay in school and become the first member of their extended families to graduate from high school. We explore how Elvis' sudden rise to stardom and riches shaped his life, triggering what Sally calls "sudden wealth syndrome,” a sense of guilt and unworthiness that compelled him to flagrantly share his fortune. Elvis' range of charitable acts and deeds ranged from: surprising a widowed neighbor with a private performance, buying new wheelchairs for strangers, and including a teenaged onlooker in a motorcycle splurge for his entourage. Sally offers that giving wasn't something Elvis did, it was who he was.Elvis' insatiable need to share his riches created his posse, “The Memphis Mafia.” Childhood friends who were payed to be his bodyguards, traveling buddies and social circle. The arrangement stifled the development of everyone concerned and limited Elvis' access to experienced show biz professionals which deepened the entrenchment of con-manager, Colonel Parker.Sally theorizes that, although his gift-giving was impulsive, under the thumb of Colonel Tom, it felt like the one part of his life he could control.Filled with fresh insight and memorable stories, this episode reveals the deeply human and vulnerable side of The King and tells the story of his compassion, his gratitude, and a lifelong desire to share his bounty with those who had provided it. In media recommendations -- Documentary, Jim Thorpe Lit By Lightning streaming on multiple platformsPath Points of Interest:Sally A.  HoedelSally A. Dr. Friedman is the Phillip J. Resnick Professor of Forensic Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and Director of Forensic Psychiatry at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. She explains why postpartum psychosis can be difficult for doctors and families to recognize, how someone experiencing psychosis can still plan and appear functional, and the critical distinction between severe mental illness and legal insanity.
