Today, we're sitting down with Matteo Franceschetti, the founder and CEO of Eight Sleep—a company revolutionizing the way we think about rest, recovery, and human potential. Matteo has always been obsessed with performance—whether it was on the slopes as a competitive ski racer in his native Italy, on the tennis court, or behind the wheel of a race car. That same drive propelled him into the legal world and led him to launch not one, but two clean-tech companies across two continents—all before the age of 30. But with success came sleepless nights. Frustrated by the lack of innovation in sleep technology, Matteo set out to change that. He founded Eight Sleep, a company turning the bed into a seamless health platform designed to optimize sleep, improve performance, and even extend longevity. On this week's episode, you'll learn: ✅ How elite athletes, including Formula 1 drivers and professional sports teams, are using Eight Sleep to gain a competitive edge. ✅ Why sleep is the next frontier in a multi-billion-dollar wellness revolution—and how technology is transforming the way we rest. ✅ The science behind sleep temperature, and why getting it right can be the key to deeper, more restorative sleep. From athlete to entrepreneur, from restless nights to unlocking the science of better sleep, Matteo's path to building Eight Sleep has been anything but ordinary. Join us as we explore the intersection of technology and wellness, the future of sleep optimization, and how Matteo is redefining what it means to rest well and perform at your peak.

We're constantly looking for ways to track, goal-set, and optimize our physical fitness. Why don't we do the same with sleep – something we spend one-third of our life doing and foundational to our health? This question was Matteo Franceschetti's "ah-ha" moment. A former competitive athlete, Matteo has had a lifelong obsession with optimizing recovery and personal performance. Sleep is not just rest, he realized; it's fitness. So, in 2014, he co-founded and became the CEO of Eight Sleep, a sleep technology company whose smart mattresses and mattress covers -- or, “Pods,” as they're called – utilize medical-grade sensors and AI to regulate mattress temperature and help you track and optimize your sleep fitness. Eight Sleep has been recognized as one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies and TIME's Best Inventions. Matteo joins us to explain how the company got there, walking us through his founder journey and Eight Sleep's early days – from a successful crowdfunding campaign to sourcing manufacturers in China, persistence in applying to Y Combinator (third time's the charm!), securing investors, signing influencers, and navigating the push/pull dynamics of product-market fit.

"It just magically happens behind the scenes. We improved sleep by around 30%, increased deep sleep on average 10%, and for those in the fitness space — 49% of our customers — they see a 10% improvement in HRV, which equals to being six years younger after using the pod." - Matteo Franceschetti How is the sleep industry being disrupted and repositioned as a health prevention industry? Why is Eight Sleep the first company to use dynamic temperatures in a mattress? What is a sleep pod, and what can it tell users about their health? What types of sleep are best for mental and physical recovery? Can sleep be more efficient? Can sleep debt ever truly be made up? What can be done today to improve sleep quality? How can leaders maintain lightning-quick iteration? In what ways can organizations support high-performing teams? Improve Sleep. Save Lives. What if your bed collected more health data than an MRI? What if six hours of sleep felt like eight? What if you could increase your performance simply by changing your mattress? The average person spends 1/3 of their life — that's 27 years — in bed. 236,520 hours working to repair the physical and mental body. So why has this fundamental function gone practically unchanged for 1,000 years? Can good sleep be harnessed to fuel human potential? Athlete-turned-entrepreneur and CEO of Eight Sleep Matteo Franceschetti created a smart mattress that does just that. After years of successful clinical trials and 70 million hours of sleep data analyzed, his company's products analyze biometrics in real-time and adjust temperature accordingly. The result: waking up 40% less during the night. Today, Matteo shares his insights on why good sleep is critical for business leaders and how anyone can improve their sleep quality. He walks us through building a team focused on high performance, maintaining velocity as a leader, and how organizations can support recovery. Peak Performance Eat healthy. Exercise often. Sleep well. These are the building blocks of a well-lived personal and professional life. Yet, we often act against our interests: staying up the extra hour to finish the brief, rising early to groggily tweak the presentation just one more time, somehow believing that by cutting into sleep we are increasing productivity. But it is more quality sleep that's essential to success — making us sharper, energized, and more effective. To test this, Matteo suggests adding one hour to your sleep every night for a week. After seven nights you'll have gained a full night back. Note your performance during and after that week. Go to eightsleep.com and enter code "CRISP" at checkout for an additional $50 off the Pod Pro or Pod Pro Cover. Key Takeaways: Everyday athletes. Matteo's team performs like an elite team in the playoffs. Fast-paced and self-aware, they strive for excellence and understand when to take a break. Obsessed with maximizing potential without burning out, the organization proactively supports time off for recovery. Simplify. At the end of the day, the job of a leader is to simplify, provide direction, and maintain momentum. Does the team have at least 80 percent confidence that a task will get done on time? If the answer is no, then there is an addressable problem. Murky timelines and unidentified blockers can spell disaster. Velocity wins. A startup's singular competitive advantage is speed. Larger organizations and law firms have more money, people, assets, institutional knowledge, and brand awareness. Move faster than the competition before they are aware of what you have discovered, and you will beat them. In the last few years, there has been an enormous increase of interest in the science of sleep. Sleep has become recognized as a primary tool for optimizing human performance. As a result, high performers who used to pride themselves on how little sleep they get now go to great lengths to optimize the duration and quality of their sleep. One of the major players in that space has been Eight Sleep, which creates a high end mattress that optimizes your temperature and monitors your body as you sleep. They've grown considerably in the last few years, most recently having raised an $86M Series C in late 2021.In this episode, Eight Sleep founder and CEO Matteo Franceschetti discusses the origins of Eight sleep, how he used lean startup principles to build a physical product, how they've leveraged organic channels to drive growth, most notably Twitter, how he thinks about influencer and brand partnerships, his approach to leveling up his own skillset as a high growth founder, and much more.Learn more about Matteo at https://twitter.com/m_franceschettiIf you enjoyed the episode, please leave a review! https://kite.link/disruptors-eight-sleepPODCAST INFO:Podcast website: https://manifold.group/podcastApple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3EbkMEkSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3nqwNiDRSS: https://bit.ly/3ntcFw1Full episodes playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdnqR-lZH65HqCM09dwh6otuU7TArkq8JClips playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdnqR-lZH65HrrlaeQZnf1sicFkprjpqkSOCIAL:- Sean Johnson on Twitter: https://twitter.com/intentionally- Sean Johnson on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/seanjohnson- Sean Johnson on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/intentionally_- Manifold on Twitter: https://twitter.com/manifold_group- Manifold on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/m/company/manifold-group- Manifold on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/themanifoldgroup- Manifold on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/manifold_group/- Manifold on Medium: https://medium.com/build-better-products

Sleep impacts everything from focus and memory retention, to risk of all sorts of mental health disorders, body composition, cancer risk, life expectancy - you name it, sleep effects it. I've been reading the book Why We Sleep , and in the book the author, Matthew Walker, even goes to far as to posit the question - “While most people ask - why did living organisms begin sleeping? - I think the more pertinent question may be why did we ever wake up”. Life is traumatic. Sleep is restorative. You action plan this week is incredibly simple - Get 7.5 hours or more of sleep every night this week if at all possible. This means giving yourself a sleep opportunity of closer to 8.5 hours of sleep - meaning about 8.5 hours of time in bed to achieve the 7.5 hours of sleep. And just take note of ALL the wonderful things you feel at the end of the week. While you're getting all this wonderfully restorative rest - go check out EightSleep.com and, if you're feeling like you really want to put all your newfound energy and focus to work - Check out “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker. Do these things and You'll never look at your bed the same way again!Whats Next - That's it for this week. Make sure you're subscribed to this podcast so that you don't miss next week's episode with Cory Camp, founder of Forever Athlete, and a conversation about human connection, training for a marathon, getting uncomfortable, the struggles that athletes face when their careers come to an end. That's it for this week. Matteo Franceschetti has always been obsessed with performance; athletic performance, business performance, and now sleep performance. An athlete from a young age, he was a competitive ski racer in his native Italy and played tennis, and raced cars on the European stage. Matteo has always been focused on winning and on winning in record time. That drive to succeed propelled him from the sports podiums to the top tier of the international legal world and to start two clean tech companies on two continents, all before age 30. Not surprisingly, sleepless nights were a way of life. It was Matteo's quest for more restorative sleep that led him to quit his previous life and launch Eight Sleep, a New York company dedicated to fueling human potential to optimal sleep, and to turning the bed into a seamless health platform for improved health, performance, and longevity. The path he took to becoming the CEO of Eight Sleep, however, is as circuitous as the tracks he raced in his youth. This week on How to Raise a Round we sat down with Matteo Franceschetti, CEO and Co-Founder of Eight Sleep— a sleep fitness startup that sells smart mattresses that tracks users' sleep cycles, adjusts the mattress temperature, and even uses bluetooth to connect to a smartphone. As a hardware company in a software-dominated space, Eight Sleep's fundraising journey was full of obstacles. Matteo also used a crowdfunding campaign to prove to investors that customers wanted to buy their product. Eight Sleep's crowdfund was a massive success, which doesn't sound like a bad thing—but it created a set of new manufacturing problems. After being accepted into the Y Combinator on their third attempt, Eight Sleep was always changing. As the team scaled and rapidly hit more and more of their goals, Matteo continued adjusting the cap based on demand, so that when his company hit a major milestone it was reflected in the valuation.Although the team already had a couple of checks in the bank, demo day at YC still brought its fair share of anxiety—and with nearly $5 million more to raise, Matteo knew he had to give the perfect pitch. By de-risking Eight Sleep, frequently adjusting his valuation cap, and staying in the fundraising mindset at all times, Matteo and his co-founders have turned an ambitious pajama party crowdfunding event into a massively successful mattress company.Over the next six years Matteo would prove again and again that there isn't just one way to raise funds—and it's safe to say that today, with Eight Sleep's valuation nearing $500 million, that the hard work paid off. In the end, Matteo and his team raised $6 million during Eight Sleep's Seed round.Learn more about Eight Sleep ›

Part of our discussion is a fascinating look into sleep, an area that consumes about a third of our lives; and has a massive impact on our health and longevity. In addition, we cover Matteo's previous startups, his experience with Y Combinator, and what it takes to grow a 'hardware' company in an environment where software is eating the world. Did you know that more than 30% of Americans struggle with their sleep? In this episode, we are talking with Matteo Franceschetti, the Co-Founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, the sleep fitness company. Along with his obsession for athletic performance, business performance, and now sleep performance Matteo and his team are the pioneers of sleep fitness technology. Matteo has always been an athlete with an obsession with recovery and performance. After spending time as a securities lawyer and launching companies in the renewable energy space he rediscovered his passion for optimizing his body's performance. He realized there was an incredible need for smarter sleep products and this was where the idea for Eight Sleep was born! Their tech enabled mattress, the Pod significantly enhances your sleep quality through thermoregulation. Over the course of the night, the Pod detects your changing body temperature via sensors built into the mattress and sends its data to their app to track all of your vital information. They have recently created their Pod Pro Cover, which adds their patented thermoregulation technology to your existing mattress. While Eight Sleep has already made huge strides in the sleep fitness technology industry, they have only just begun! In today's episode, we discuss Matteo's journey to becoming CEO of Eight Sleep and what the future of sleep technology has in store for us. We cover the impact that sleep deprivation has on not only our health but how it has also caused billions of dollars and millions of working hours lost globally. Matteo also gives his insight into the future of sleep and sleep technology. During this conversation, we think outside the box and predict just how the future will change the way we look at sleep. So relax! And listen to how you can achieve a better night's sleep! Those hacks will come from my guest Matteo Franceschetti. Matteo defines high performance—having been a professional skier, high-level tennis player, competitive race car driver and practicing lawyer. He didn't get much sleep doing all those things, so he co-founded Eight Sleep and set out to create and advanced sleep improvement device so he, and everyone else, could sleep better and perform better. We can all agree: “Sleep is a pillar, a fundamental pillar for your health,” Matteo says.Eight Sleep tracks biomarkers that measure your sleep quality. Then it uses machine learning to make automatic adjustments to your sleep environment. This helps you optimize your sleep, get the reset and recovery your body needs, and well, wake up feeling better than you have in years. Best of all, you don't actually have to do anything. You just go to sleep, exactly like you did last night, and the technology does all the sleep hacking for you. TIME Magazine named Eight Sleep one of its “Best Inventions” of both 2018 and 2019, and Fast Company listed it as one of the most innovative companies of 2018. They're a sleep hacking company making big inroads into understanding and regulating your body's temperatures while sleeping. This affects your REM sleep the most.“While you are in REM your brain deactivates all the temperature controls in the body,” Matteo explains. “It doesn't let you fall into REM if it's too hot or too cold because you could potentially die. Changing the temperature based on your sleep stages and the different stages of the night is fundamental to maximize your deep and REM stages.”And Eight Sleep has a fix for that.“Based on your sleep stages and based on your biometrics, we adjust your body temperature during the night,” Matteo says. “It's not that we are inventing the wheel. Your body is already changing temperature during the night. It's part of your physiological process. We just enhanced that process to maximize your sleep performance.”And then I wanted to know, “How many hours of sleep per night do you think you can save people, by just changing temperature?” The point isn't necessarily to get less sleep, but it's to live more. Right? If you just got everything you needed and it was as good as what you have today, but you had enough time to do two hours of reading or learning every day or meditating or parenting or whatever else, it's not about working more necessarily. It's just about living more. It's exciting to talk to Matteo because he brings a whole bunch of new biohacking ideas to the table, er bed. He and I get into a bunch of sleep topics during this conversation, including:How you can instantly increase your deep sleep by 40%, starting tonightHow you can reset your energy levels in the morning just by regulating your sleep temperature at nightHow you can compress sleep down to 5-6 hours a night, while actually getting more rest and recoveryWhy sleep consistency matters (and is still the hardest thing for people to do, well, consistently}Why machine learning is the future of personalized healthIf your sleep could use an upgrade, check out this episode for hacks you can implement right away and learn about what's next in sleep technology. So, we asked ourselves, 'What if we could digitize a drug?' If you take drugs, there's a chemical bound and the potential for side effects, toxicology issues addiction problems, and it's very expensive. If you can digitize it and remove any of the side effects, you can still give people the desired altered state that will help our lives move forward, to engage with other people, to focus more, to sleep better, and more. There's so many practical reasons and if you can digitize a drug, it's game over for Big Pharma." - Scott Donnell An All-In-One Support Tool "Hapbee is a tool and we're not going to fix everybody's problems but what we can do is be right there as a perfect assistant for you when you need it quickly. “Why is Elon Musk taking us to Mars, but we are still expected to spend 8 hours a day on a dumb piece of foam?” That is the question posed by this episode’s guest - Matteo Franceschetti - a dynamic Italian entrepreneur who is disrupting the global sleep industry. He’s on a quest to crack the code for a perfect night’s sleep using big data. How Matteo and his business partner collect that data is where things get fascinating. A former lawyer, Matteo is now CEO of Eight Sleep. A company focused on using technology to help people optimize their ‘sleep fitness’ and efficiency. Matteo was a serious tennis player during his teen years. As an athlete, that period of his life is when he started to get obsessed with physical recovery and rebounding faster after a grueling tournament or injury. After becoming a “boring business lawyer” for two large firms, Matteo caught the entrepreneurial bug, which naturally led to working long hours. Once again, his bent toward efficiency prompted him to ask, “why do I have to sleep eight hours? Can I sleep less and recover faster?” If you think humans “need” 8 hours of sleep to be at an optimal level of health, Matteo’s discoveries through research and data may surprise you. “Eight hours is what our body needs today because there is no technology enhancing our recovery. Elon Musk is taking us to Mars, but I still spend a third of my life on a piece of foam. We have technology everywhere. We are using technology to conduct this interview. But we spend a third of our life, eight hours every single day on something that hasn't changed for 4,000 years.” You won’t fall asleep listening to this exciting conversation between Matteo and our host Wade T. Lightheart. However, you may start sleeping like a baby after hearing the many hacks and tips on getting better sleep revealed in this episode. In this podcast, we cover: How a lawyer in Italy became a sleep expert and sleep industry innovator Sleep compression - getting more rest while sleeping less time How Matteo’s sleep technology “keeps you alive” by detecting early signs of illness, like inflammation, while you sleep How 8 Sleep develops its technology What is “thermal regulation”? Everything that this sleep technology tracks in your body Things Matteo is finding in his research that positively or negatively affect sleep Two revolutionary sleep products developed by 8 Sleep The fantastic software 8 Sleep is developing that Matteo describes as the “Tesla of sleep” A sneak peek behind the curtain: Matteo reveals the co-founder of 8 Sleep is “kind of a genius” who can “build a space shuttle in the garage.” So he builds the latest technology, and then Matteo serves as the “guinea pig” who tests out the equipment. Matteo is always sleeping on something that the company will be releasing in a couple of years. He tests it and gives feedback to his team. The engineers then iterate until the product is consumer-ready. What does this technology monitor while you are sleeping? 8 Sleep technology can monitor everything about your heart rate - your HRV (Heart Rate Variability). Their tech is “semi medical-grade accurate,” meaning it is within one heartbeat per minute, compared to medical-grade EKG - but you don’t have to wear anything. You go to bed as you do now, and then you have this incredible data at your fingertips (on the app.) 8 Sleep technology also monitors your entire respiration. In the future, the tech will be able to track snoring and sleep apnea. Everything about your sleep gets observed - like when you toss and turn or when your sleep stages occur - everything - with no need for charging batteries or wearing anything during the night. Matteo describes the 8 Sleep product as “the Lamborghini of beds.” And you can give this sleep technology a test drive for 100 Nights with a risk-free, no-questions-asked full refund policy behind it. Time to put those sleepless nights to bed using modern technology. Matteo and his team at 8 Sleep are doing incredible work. His team includes professors from Stanford and Harvard. Tune in and tune up one of the essential parts of your day - sleeping! Listen to this episode and start sleeping better than ever! You deserve to wake up each morning feeling refreshed. Fashionably Late is proud to release our Female Founder Series! Each week in April 2021, Fashionably Late will feature a female founder. From the tech space to the wellness industry, our four business leaders are eager to share their journey, advice, and fun personal tidbits. This week we have Alexandra Zatarain from Eight Sleep. Identify a problem. Develop a solution. Sell that solution. This is the roadmap for many startups and budding entrepreneurs, including for Alexandra Zatarain. Co-Founder and VP of Brand and Marketing for the pioneering mattress company, Alexandra explains just how intricate, scientific, and collaborative the process was in founding her start-up, as well as in establishing its trajectory for long-term success. Nearly a decade ago, Alexandra's husband and soon-to-be co-founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, Matteo Franceschetti, struggled with sleep to the extent that it was beginning to impact him. Looking into the sector for relief, Matteo discovered there were three options for helping with sleep: mattress companies, sleep trackers, and pharmaceuticals. Both having worked for tech startups, the couple identified the need for a product that used innovative technology to actively improve sleep. Thus, the idea for Eight Sleep, the world's first sleep fitness company, was born! Eager to utilize her background in marketing/PR, Alexandra left her job at a successful fintech startup to be “all-in” in founding the tech-based mattress company. Driven by their fundamental belief that technology is key for improving sleep, Alexandra and Matteo set out to develop their general concept into a tangible effective product. The first step included moving to San Francisco to join their cofounder and Chief Technical Officer, Massimo “Max” Bassi. The team faced their first challenge: they were creating a “smart mattress cover,” a product that was the first of its kind. Once they set up their office- an apartment full of desks- Alexandra believed it was most important to validate that people besides her husband desired their tech-based sleep product. She dedicated months to inviting “everyone they knew in San Francisco” to view a prototype and share their sleep experiences. Alexandra used this data about most pressing issues regarding sleep, as well as information about sleeping environments, to completely inform their product design and eventual crowdfunding campaign. Likewise, she spoke to sleep experts/medical professionals, ultimately leading them to develop technology that regulates biometrics including a sleeper's temperature, heart rate, humidity etc. The thorough research in learning about the sleep problem, who was affected, and the contributing factors proved vital when the team launched their Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in 2015. Alexandra employed her marketing/pr experiences to Eight Sleep, spending 5-6 months connecting with potential customers and working entirely on the campaign. She found that consumers resonated with her startup's two-fold approach in personalizing and improving sleep through tech, as well as tracking data so someone can make individual changes to achieve sleep fitness. The campaign was extremely successful, raising over $1.2M. Both the original model, the smart mattress cover, and their latest mattress, The Pod, have redefined the sleep market. Since 2015, 30,000+ restless sleepers have relied on Eight Sleep. This immense popularity has led to the company securing over $65M in venture funding. Alexandra's leadership in helping Eight Sleep reach these achievements did not go unnoticed, as in 2017, she was named as one of Forbes's 30 Under 30 in Consumer Technology. Listen to her describe the most valuable lessons she has learned on her continuous journey as a co-founder, including how she balances working with her business and life partner, Matteo. You will be motivated by her thoroughness, especially in how it enabled her to accomplish Eight Sleep's goals during the pandemic, despite difficult challenges, including layoffs. Few companies can say they supported their staff and adapted their business plans to accomplish their best year in revenue in 2020 and are already rehiring employees. More so, Alexandra has no plans for stagnating Eight Sleep. Hearing how she envisions continuing to disrupt the sleep and tech industries by transforming their technology to detect preventative health signs will help you understand how to pilot and grow your startup. A recurring theme in Alexandra's interview is that you have to be “all in” in order to surpass your goals; get ready to be “all-in” for this informative, down-to-earth, and refreshing episode. Topics covered in this episode: How to market new revolutionary products/innovations in an already robust market The importance of validation from prospective customers before developing a product, and how to attain this necessary step The significance of mental health and self-reflection for a founder What it's like to start a company with co-founders, especially when one is your spouse Why it's beneficial not to have a “plan-B” and why your ideas should always be ambitious Links: https://www.eightsleep.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexandrazatarain/

Matteo Franceschetti is the Co-Founder & CEO of Eight Sleep. Matteo has always been an athlete and obsessed with recovery and performance. Growing up in Italy, he spent time as a competitive ski racer, tennis player and race car driver before jumping into the corporate world as a securities lawyer. After launching and exiting a couple of companies in the renewable energy space, his professional focus came full circle as he rediscovered his passion for optimizing performance. He explored the space and realized the massive opportunity for smarter sleep products to support the rapidly growing quantified self movement. It was at this moment that Eight Sleep was born.Today at Eight Sleep, Matteo and his team are the pioneers of sleep fitness. Their tech enabled mattress, the Pod, has taken the industry by storm as it significantly enhances your sleep quality through thermoregulation. Over the course of the night, the Pod detects your changing body temperature via sensors built into the mattress. Then, the Hub, an external water tank connected to the Pod, uses warm and cool water to constantly adjust the temperature of the bed to keep your internal body temperature at the optimal level. This reduces disruptions throughout the night and enables more restful, higher quality sleep. Eight Sleep also has a killer app that you can use to track your vitals, sleep cycles and overall sleep performance overtime. In the last few weeks, they launched their Pod Pro Cover, which adds their patented thermoregulation technology to your existing mattress. While they've made incredible strides already, Eight Sleep is still in the early innings of what's possible in the smart sleep space.Use code "Kallaway" for 15% off all Eight Sleep products.Tune in to hear Matteo's story!EPISODE TOPICS: (2:55) Eight Sleep snapshot today(3:55) Background and founding story(5:58) Learning from previous companies(7:28) Sleep basics and learnings(9:41) Sleep Pod evolution and thermoregulation(15:05) Customer acquisition & growth(20:37) Out-of-the-box marketing tactics(22:57) 10X growth(24:25) Competitive landscape(26:59) Customer data collected(28:52) How to maximize sleep while traveling(31:19) Y Combinator experience(35:40) Hiring(38:06) Investor lessons(41:45) Lessons to younger self(44:15) Matteo's wellness stack(50:50) Exciting trends(51:53) Matteo's startup manifesto(52:31) Matteo's founder nominationEight Sleep - eightsleep.comFollow Matteo (@m_franceschetti // @matteofranceschetti) on Twitter // Instagram // LinkedInFollow Eight Sleep (@eightsleep) on Instagram // TwitterMatteo's content and learning recommendations The Founder - www.thefounderpod.com Follow The Founder (@founderpodcast) on Instagram // LinkedIn // TwitterDon't have time to listen to the full episode? Matteo is an entrepreneur, originally from Italy, where he focused on the renewable energy sector. Since arriving in NYC however, he has dedicated his energy and time into co-founding the athletic sleep company - Eight Sleep. I never realized how important sleep was for athletic ability, recovery, and overall performance. What Matteo's mattress does is essentially adapt to your body temperature, gather data on what facilitates your best sleep, and gradually, the goal is for you to be able to sleep less but better. D2C (direct to consumer) mattress companies have blown up in the last decade - but there isn't any other mattress company that collects your own personalized sleep data, to give you the best sleep possible. With more and more studies coming out backing the importance of deep sleep, Matteo has positioned himself to capitalize on a growing trend. Matteo gives some really great tips on improving your sleep, and even your naps. Now that we are starting to realize that sleeping is one of the most important tools for a great day, these tips are definitely worth taking. Matteo and I discussed how he started Eight Sleep, the benefits of great sleep, rem vs non-rem sleep, how Eight Sleep uses and gathers data, athletic endurance, and so much more. My Take - There are many basic things we do every day that we could essentially be doing better. Breathing, running, sitting, and yes, even sleeping, are daily activities that through science we are now learning so much more about. A good night's sleep is something we should invest in, as the return on investment could be better athletic ability, quicker recovery, and increased physical / mental health and focus.
