Show #1373 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 13th February. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM If you could do any job in the EV industry what would it be? Email me any feedback to: hello@evnewsdaily.com JIM BURNESS, CEO NATIONAL CAR CHARGING If I could have any job in the EV industry, I would be Tom Moloughney.  KARL CRAMER I'd like to the product placement guy for movies and TV. Should Bruce Wayne be driving a Cadillac Lyriq in his civilian identity? Silverados used to capture Jurassic World dinos. Stuff like that. DAVID POLLOCK I'd have your job! ROBERT GRACE As to the question of the week, the job that I want is test-driving a Taycan on the race track every day. ;) MATTI JOUHKIMO That's easy! I'd be a tester for Volvo + Luminar "Ride pilot" program. That project has huge potential! Eagerly waiting for the first results from California. Definitely more interesting AND promising than FSD. Sorry T-fanboys/girls.  INGE DAVIDSEN If I could do any job in the EV industry I would fire the current CEO of Toyota and install myself in his position and steer the company towards BEVs as fast as possible. My reason is that Toyota due to their size can make a huge impact on our motoring future and pollution.  Oh, and I would also fire whoever came up with the self-driving drivel! Maybe that's better reason. You be the judge. BILL POLLOCK That's easy, Field testing each vehicle for 1000 km in all possible conditions. Cold, Hot, Wet, Dry, On Road, Off Road,  Second choice: Road testing "Time To Drive 1000 km"  for every model that enters the market, including rapid charge time (at the highest KW each could handle), but not including overnight charging on L2 if I can't do it in one day. I think that rating would be a good metric to have when buying a new EV.  Maybe I'll do that...now I just need funding...and a co-pilot...are you in Martyn? BJORN IN SEATLE I'd love to be a driver for final mile delivery, here in the US from rail yards to dealerships via car carrier.  Looking at the future and the possibility of an EV semi would be amazing NIKLAS Hämäläinen  It would be winter testing vehicles above arctic circle, no doubt!--  NICK CHRISTEN Thank you as always for the podcast  If I could do anything with EVs, I would work on the charging software. FOLLOW UPS MIKE WISE Just to provide an alternative viewpoint.  Given that VW can not supply enough of these vehicles they need to decide how to allocate the limited supply.   Most companies that are facing supply shortages allocate in this way.  For VW you certainly want to take care of your larger dealers that drive the greatest % of your sales.    If not by the size of the dealership (# of cars sold) how else would you allocate?  An alternative could be giving every dealer the same amount but that would likely create an even larger supply imbalances and advantage smaller dealers that would likely get more then their natural demand and an economic wind fall.   ADAM BREWTON Second, while I love the idea of charging stations at interstate Rest Areas (that's a big thing keeping me from going EV…we do road trips and within my region there are very few DC fast chargers along the routes we travel) a state operated system would be awful! I live in Alabama and we can barely handle online vehicle registration renewals. All of the websites for government agencies are extremely outdated and often even services that are related don't have websites which are  integrated or talk to one another.  I would much rather they outsource to a third party service and lease them space while holding them to a strict service agreement regarding functionality and reliability.  STEVE BIRKETT, PLUG & PLAY EV Thanks for the coverage of federal funding and interesting question around state-funded charging networks.  Here in the Northeast US, we already have the EVolve NY network building out across New York state, led by the New York Power Authority - Evolve New York, Electric Charging Stations Near Me, Electric Car Incentives (nypa.gov) - and funded to the tune of $250 million through 2025. It does have some crossover to private charging providers, primarily Electrify America and Greenlots (now Shell), but the funding starts within the public authority.  While it got off to a slow start and has faced some challenges getting hardware in the ground, almost every corner of the state is now covered by the network, something that no other charging provider can claim. In particular, the popular Adirondack region in the north of the state near Canada would be inaccessible to non-Tesla electric vehicles without EVolve NY. QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Tesla recently updated the Model Y Standard Range and the 0-60 time slowed by 1.5 seconds. There was a time when Tesla fans dismissed any other EV because they weren't quick enough, but when making a purchasing decision, how important do you personally rate performance. Saturday, 19 February 2022 from 10:00-16:00 UTC https://www.facebook.com/events/608101480274676/ GENERAL MOTORS EARNINGS Q4 2021 General Motors said it expects to generate an operating profit this year of between $13 billion and $15 billion as a semiconductor shortage that marred vehicle production and sales for most of last year shows signs of improving. Net income this year is expected to be between $9.4 billion and $10.8 billion, also in line with its $10 billion profit in 2021, GM said. Barra said the company is not reinstating its dividend, which the automaker cut during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020. She said the company plans to use the saved capital for accelerating, even increasing, its $35 billion in investments in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. “We are pulling ahead significant investment into the 2022-to-2025 time frame, and we will share more details as we further refine our plan,” Barra told analysts during a call Tuesday. the company will announce a third plant to produce battery-electric trucks in the foreseeable future as well as the location of a fourth production facility for battery cells with LG https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/general-motors-gm-earnings-q4-2021.html 2021 FULL-YEAR AND Q4 LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS Since 2020, we have announced investments totaling more than $14 billion in 10 sites across North America to increase our manufacturing capacity in the region to more than 1 million EVs annually by the end of 2025. In late 2021, we opened Factory ZERO in Detroit and Hamtramck, our first plant dedicated to Ultium products, including the GMC HUMMER EV We are converting a plant in Orion Township, Michigan, to EV truck production to help provide us with a total of 600,000 units of EV truck capacity in North America by the end of 2025. Ultium Cells, our joint venture with LG Energy Solution, announced its third U.S. cell plant More than 110,000 Silverado EVs are reserved so far, including reservations from more than 240 fleet operators, and the numbers keep growing. FedEx Express, Merchants Fleet and Walmart, are adopting BrightDrop's electric vehicles and technology to make their delivery operations more efficient. All told, we have more than 25,000 production reservations for BrightDrop cargo vans. Customer interest in the LYRIQ is now so strong that we will forgo a new round of reservations and begin taking customer orders soon after the Debut Edition launches in March. Equinox EV is compellingly new, and it's affordable, with an estimated starting MSRP of $30,000. The efficiencies created by the Ultium Platform are a key reason why we can deliver truly affordable EVs like the Equinox. https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/emergency_news/2022/shareholders/q4-21-ceo-letter-to-shareholders.html FORD WILL SPEND UP TO $20 BILLION MORE IN SHIFT TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES Ford will spend as much as $20 billion to reorganize its business for the electric future, according to Bloomberg. The automaker is also mulling whether to spin off some of its EV business as a special acquisition company (SPAC) in order to attract more investment. Ford has previously stated that it would spend $30 billion on electric and autonomous vehicle development by 2025. Ford is reportedly putting former Apple and Tesla executive Doug Field in charge of the reorganization, which will include converting its factories from gas-powered to electric vehicle production and hiring more engineers. Ford recently announced that it was doubling production of its upcoming electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, and tripling production for the Mustang Mach-E, with the expectation that it will reach over 200,000 units per year by 2023. Ford's electric delivery van, the E-Transit, also goes on sale early this year. He had a previous stint at Apple, where he was once the VP of Mac hardware engineering, but he left the company in 2013 to become Tesla's chief vehicle engineer, where he helped oversee the troublesome development of the Model 3 sedan. https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/1/22912841/ford-electric-vehicle-reorganization-investment U.S. EV CHARGING NETWORK IS MORE ROBUST BUT PROVIDER DIFFERENCES REMAIN significant differences in reliability and performance remain between providers, an industry ranking by engineering consulting firm umlaut found. The group tested chargers by Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Electrify America, ChargePoint (CHPT.N), EVgo (EVGO.O), Blink Charging (BLNK.O), EVconnect, Greenlots and Tesla's (TSLA.O) Superchargers across seven U.S. states in September. Electrify America reached the highest score in the ranking, followed by Tesla's Supercharger and ChargePoint, said umlaut, which was acquired by Accenture (ACN.N) in October. The ranking considered the technical performance of chargers, as well as the charging station environment, such as lighting, roofing and nearby amenities. It also took into account the performance of charging networks' apps The group used a Tesla Model 3 and a Ford (F.N) Mach-E for its 2021 tests Last year, EVs accounted for around 2% of all new car sales https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-ev-charging-network-is-more-robust-provider-differences-remain-2022-01-31/ MAGNA EDRIVES HIT THE MARKET ON VOLKSWAGEN MEB PLATFORM The HASCO Magna Electric Drive Systems Co., Ltd. (HME) team in China has started high-volume serial production of secondary eDrive systems for the Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover, one of the automaker's vehicles on the MEB platform. HME is the global supplier of secondary eDrives for Volkswagen's all-wheel drive MEB models with power greater than 185kW. The highly integrated eDrive system is specifically optimized for secondary eDrives for electrified vehicles. The system integrates an induction-type e-motor, an integrated single-speed gearbox, a high-voltage inverter and the corresponding software and controls. It also provides 80 kW of peak power to the front wheels and features best-in-class drag torque, which optimizes efficiency. https://www.magna.com/company/newsroom/releases/release/2022/01/27/news-release---hasco-magna-edrives-hit-the-market-on-volkswagen-meb-platform INSIDER Q&A: JB STRAUBEL, CEO OF RECYCLER REDWOOD MATERIALS https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-environment-and-nature-nevada-13483556337aa1f20a0ce1e5a3d13857 DAIMLER TO DEPLOY NATIONWIDE US ELECTRIC TRUCKING NETWORK https://pv-magazine-usa.com/2022/01/31/daimler-nextera-and-blackrock-to-deploy-nationwide-us-electric-trucking-network/ LIGHTYEAR ONE SOLAR EV BOASTS REMARKABLE HIGH SPEED EFFICIENCY https://uk.motor1.com/news/564464/lightyear-one-highspeed-efficiency-testing/ NSW TO CO-FUND 1,000 ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS  https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/feb/02/nsw-to-co-fund-1000-electric-vehicle-charging-stations-across-the-state-over-four-years INDIA TO SOON HAVE BATTERY SWAPPING POLICY https://www.cnbctv18.com/auto/india-to-soon-have-battery-swapping-policy-for-evs-a-concept-popular-in-china-europe-12334572.htm ALPINE TO BUILD ELECTRIC CROSSOVER AT DIEPPE PLANT FROM 2025 https://www.electrive.com/2022/01/31/alpine-to-build-electric-crossover-at-dieppe-plant-from-2025/ EV START-UP WM MOTOR: CHINA'S COVID LOCKDOWN RULES SEND PRICES HIGHER https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/31/ev-start-up-wm-motor-chinas-covid-lockdown-rules-send-prices-higher.html BILLIONAIRE 'CABLE COWBOY' PLUGS IN TO ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2022/01/30/billionaire-cable-cowboy-plugs-electric-car-charging/ MICHIGAN FINALIZING PLAN TO BUILD FIRST-EVER WIRELESS CHARGING ROAD FOR ELECTRIC CARS https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/michigan-finalizing-plan-to-build-first-ever-wireless-charging-road-for-electric-cars QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM I'm taking a break this weekend so won't have the time on Saturday and Sunday to do this, it's back next week. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VOLKSWAGEN ID 4 GTX IS PERFORMANCE EV FLAGSHIP "The GTX’s powertrain comprises a 201bhp permanent magnet synchro machine (PSM) on the rear axle, and an asychronous motor (ASM) on the front axle. The two motors combine for 295bhp, although Volkswagen has yet to confirm the torque output. The system can power the ID 4 GTX from rest to 62mph in 6.2sec, with top speed limited to 112mph.  When it goes on sale, the range-topping version of the electric SUV will be the first ID model to use the new GTX badge" says Autocar: "While the GTI line is centred around the Golf, Volkswagen has chosen to use the ID 4 for the first GTX model because of both the growing importance of the SUV market and the decision to use a twin-motor powertrain, which the smaller ID 3 hatch is unable to accommodate."   "The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is on sale in Germany now priced from €50,415 (around £43,500), although that includes a €7,500 subsidy from the German government. Under normal driving conditions, the ID.4 GTX is propelled by the rear electric motor alone. However, when the car recognises a loss of traction or a demand for more power through the accelerator, it activates the front motor to keep the SUV planted or accelerating as fast as it can. " reports AutoExpress: "To support the more powerful electric motors, the ID.4 GTX is available with an optional Sports package, which adds lowered sports suspension and progressive steering - the latter altering the steering ratio according to the amount of steering lock applied. Volkswagen’s optional Sports Plus package builds on this further with adaptive dampers. To mark it out as the performance model it gets a new front bumper with LED-backlit intakes, a sporty rear diffuser and 20-inch alloy wheels. Matrix LED headlights also come as standard, along with dynamic indicators and a two-tone paint finish. Larger 21-inch alloys are offered as an option."   "Power is drawn from a 77kWh battery pack that sits underneath the cabin floor, and is capable of up to 125kW charging from rapid chargers. Estimated range on the WLTP cycle is rated at 297 miles – a drop of only around 17 miles compared to a standard 77kWh ID.4. VW hasn’t released kerb weights as yet, but thanks to the extra hardware on board expect a jump on a standard ID.4’s 2124kg figure, likely making this ‘electric GTI’ a 2200kg-plus proposition. " says the performance mag evo: "In reality, a 2.2 ton ID.4 is not the GTX we’re particularly interested in, but when Volkswagen (or likely Cupra) decides to drop this powertrain into something a little smaller and lighter, we’ll start taking notice of the ‘electric GTI’ connection VW is so determined to establish."   "The GTX name will be used on more upcoming all-electric ID models in Europe. The AWD version coming to the US later this year might not carry the GTX designation but will have similar technical specifications. When the driver hits the brake pedal, the rear motor is responsible for decelerating the EV while recovering energy. The front motor can recover energy in some situations. The rear motor can brake up to a deceleration rate of about 0.3g, after that, the hydraulic brakes kick in. In the D drive mode, energy regeneration only happens when the brake pedal is applied. However, when in the B (Brake) drive mode, power regeneration starts when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal." says InsideEVs. The U.S. EPA range is 250 miles for RWD. "Standard features in the ID.4 GTX include a 30-color ambient lighting system, a heated leather steering wheel, leatherette seating with red stitching, a 5.3-inch driver's display, a 10-inch center touchscreen, the Hello ID voice assistant, a navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking.  Optional features offered in various packages include a 12-inch center touchscreen, an augmented reality head-up display, a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control, and the Travel Assist driver-assistance system."   And we couldn't get to the end without a comparison with the cars which still, for many, define the EV segment. According to Car & Driver: "Claimed performance is, frankly, underwhelming by segment standards. Volkswagen's promise of a 6.2-second zero-to-62-mph time translates to GTI-level acceleration but looks leisurely by segment standards, delivering on our prediction that Volkswagen's fastest EV will be slower than the cheapest and least powerful Tesla."     https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2021-volkswagen-id-4-gtx-performance-ev-flagship   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/354855/new-hot-electric-volkswagen-id4-gtx-launched-295bhp   https://insideevs.com/news/503979/volkswagen-id-4-gtx-electric/   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36275982/vw-id4-gtx-revealed/   VOLKSWAGEN ID.5 TEASED "Recently, during the presentation of the ID.4 GTX, came the first major showing of the ID.5 and the confirmation of a GTX version of it. This is the latest vehicle to ride on VW's MEB platform for EVs but with a sleeker roof than on the ID.4.The front of the ID.5 is nearly identical to the ID.4, and the flanks are similar. The major change is the roof's distinct arch, whereas the ID.4 is a bit more angular. The design differences between them are not very significant." says Motor1: "The two models likely share the same powertrains."   SKODA STARTS ENYAQ DELIVERIES IN NORWAY "Škoda has started deliveries of its electric model Enyaq iV. The first model was delivered to a family in Norway. After the start of deliveries in the Scandinavian markets, Western and Central Europe are to follow from May and June 2021." says electrive: " the Enyaq iV 60 and 80 variants were available with rear-wheel drive – i.e. with 58 kWh or 77 kWh battery capacity. In the meantime, the basic Enyaq iV 50 model with a 52 kWh battery can also be ordered. The two all-wheel-drive models are not yet available."   UK pricing starts at £31,085 and UK deliveries start in a few weeks.   https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/28/skoda-starts-enyaq-deliveries-in-norway/   GM ULTIUM CHARGE 360 "Much like Ford does with its FordPass network, the Ultium Charge 360 will integrate GM’s own vehicle apps and software with a variety of third-party charging services, such as Blink, ChargePoint, EVgo, Flo, Greenlots, and SemaConnect. The goal is to create a seamless experience in which an owner of a GM electric vehicle can drive up to a station, plug in, and start charging without having to juggle multiple apps or third-party memberships." says The Verge: " lot will depend on the level of service provided by these various charging services, an aspect that GM will have little control over. EV charging in the US is a bit of a mess, with broken chargers, fraying cables, and unreliable maps. While GM can’t solve some of the more intractable problems, it says it’s doing what it can to make charging a little less of a headache. GM wouldn’t say whether its forthcoming EVs would include Plug and Charge capabilities, a new technology standard that allows a much simpler way to charge your car."   https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/28/22407789/gm-ev-charging-general-motors-ultium-charge-360   ELECTRIC FORD MUSTANG MACH-E TO PACE NASCAR TALLADEGA CUP SERIES RACE "The Ford Mustang-Mach E is hitting the track. The all-electric utility vehicle will serve as the pace car for the NASCAR Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, April. 25." says Fox NEws: "Ford's electric cars have come a long way in the past decade. While the Focus had a range of 115 miles per charge, the Mach-E is available in a version that can cover 305 miles between stops."   https://www.foxnews.com/auto/electric-ford-mustang-mach-e-nascar-talladega-cup-series   TESLA’S HEAD OF UI DEPARTS "Tesla’s longtime head of user interface design has left the company, and he has published some images of previously unreleased UI design for the Cybertruck and Full Self-Driving software in the process. These designs were seen partially in the Cybertruck launch but never so clearly…" says Fred at eelectreK: "According to his LInkedin profile, Pietryka left Tesla last month to create his own design firm called Moderne Grafik Anstalt. Pietryka has been replaced as head of UI design at Tesla by Ben Cunningham, who came to Tesla last year from Facebook. As part of Pietryka’s portfolio on his new firm’s website, the designer shared some images of his designs at Tesla."   https://electrek.co/2021/04/28/tesla-head-ui-leaves-leaks-unreleased-cybertruck-fsd-images/   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC DISCONTINUED IN KOREA "There've been whispers about an uncertain future for the Hyundai Kona Electric, and on Wednesday we learned it's going away in the automaker's home country of Korea. The country's Yonhap News Agency first reported Hyundai will discontinue the Kona Electric locally as recalls for battery fires continue. The company will instead focus on the Ioniq 5 as its flagship EV for now." sayas CNET: "Hyundai recently revealed a refreshed model with new looks but an identical powertrain, set to go on sale soon in both Europe and the US. Korea, however, will have to deal with whatever models remain at dealership lots."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/hyundai-kona-electric-discontinued-battery-fire-recalls/   THIRD VW PLANT IN CHINA UNDER CONSTRUCTION Volkswagen Group China has begun construction of an all-new MEB plant at Volkswagen Anhui recently. As the third of the Group’s pure-electric vehicle manufacturing facilities in China, following completion of the Anting (SAIC VW) and Foshan (FAW-VW) plants, the Volkswagen Anhui plant will be powered by green energy from day one. Due for completion mid-2022, the plant is set for start of production in the second half of 2023. The plant is another cornerstone of Volkswagen’s global e-mobility push. By 2025, Volkswagen Group China plans to deliver up to 1.5 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) per year.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   Whats the most effective consumer education regarding EVs?   Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com     It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #826   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 1st July 2020. EVPASSPORT TO OFFER $39/MONTH UNLIMITED EV CHARGING "EVPassport, a new electric vehicle charging app, promises to deliver unlimited EV charging on a variety of different networks for only $39 per month. With the EVPassport app, EV drivers will have access to DC fast chargers across the Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint, and Greenlots networks." writes Tom Moloughney for IndideEVS: " In addition to the flat fee, EVPassport offers the convenience of interoperability. With EVPassport, there's no need to join those networks directly, which requires multiple apps and RFID cards. The EVPassport will be available this summer, however, you can join the wait list and signup now. EVPassport will be compatible with all Electrify America stations and the vast majority of EVgo stations. It will only work with about 50% of ChargePoint stations, and only with the recently installed Greenlots units. The problem with many of the ChargePoint and Greenlots stations is that they are old hardware, and aren't be compatible. EVPassport aims to simplify EV charging by introducing the Minutes To Charge feature. Instead of the app showing how many kilowatts the DC fast charger can deliver, or what the cost per minute is, it displays how many minutes you'll need to charge based on your specific car. VPassport isn't available for Rideshare services like Lyft or UBER, it's for personal use only - not commercial enterprise. There will also be a soft-cap that limits how much an individual can spend on electricity per month to eliminate abuse, but those details are still being refined."   https://insideevs.com/news/431599/evpassport-39-month-unlimited-ev-charging/   NEW 496BHP AUDI E-TRON S REVEALED https://www.evo.co.uk/audi/audi-e-tron/202840/new-496bhp-audi-e-tron-s-revealed-audis-first-high-performance-ev   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E ALREADY OFFERED WITH 84-MONTH FINANCING https://www.motor1.com/news/431668/mustang-mach-e-financing-offer/   TESLA’S MARKET VALUE OVERTAKES EXXON https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/01/teslas-market-value-overtakes-exxon-in-historic-paradigm-shift-tsla-xom/   WATCH A TESLA MODEL 3 BEING CHARGED BY A HONDA E ELECTRIC CAR https://electrek.co/2020/07/01/tesla-model-3-charged-honda-e-electric-car/   BMW APPARENTLY PLANNING A PILOT BATTERY PLANT https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/01/bmw-apparently-planning-a-pilot-battery-plant/   AUDI Q4 E-TRON, THE AUDI VERSION OF THE VW ID.4, SPOTTED TESTING https://insideevs.com/news/431927/audi-q4-e-tron-prototype-spy-photos/   NEW 2020 SUZUKI ACROSS SUV REVEALED WITH PLUG-IN HYBRID POWER https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/suzuki/352652/new-2020-suzuki-across-suv-revealed-plug-hybrid-power   2021 HYUNDAI SANTA FE DETAILED FOR EUROPE, GETS PHEV WITH 265 BHP https://uk.motor1.com/news/431833/2021-hyundai-santa-fe-video/   VOLVO PENTA DEVELOPS ELECTRIC DRIVELINE FOR ROSENBAUER FIRE TRUCK https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/07/20200702-penta.html   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #728   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 25th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Welcome to a new PRODUCER PETER BØDKER   LG CHEM SUSPENDS EV BATTERY FACTORY IN MICHIGAN "Korean battery makers based in the US are also temporarily reducing factory operations. Upon the stay-at-home order of the Michigan state government issued on Tuesday, LG Chem and Samsung SDI have nearly closed their electric vehicle battery factories there." reports Korea Herald: "LG Chem has limited its production battery cells for EVs with limited staff in Holland. Samsung SDI has a battery pack plant in Auburn Hills, and has temporarily suspended operations as local employees have been ordered to stay at home. As the state order is valid for three weeks, both battery plants are expected to shut down for the next three weeks. Meanwhile, the companies’ battery factories in Poland and Hungary are operating as usual."   http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200325000738   CORONAVIRUS MAY GET AMERICA TO PASS ITS BIGGEST CLIMATE BILL YET "Action on climate change in Washington, DC happens in tiny, arcane steps" says Quartz today, pointing out that this crisis could result in a moonshot piece of lawmaking which benefits the environment: "as Congress tries to resuscitate the economy, the bills that follow have the potential to include the first big climate legislation since the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009. Democrats in the Senate held up a public health and disaster relief bill this week by demanding accountability for how the money will be spent. They called for attaching conditions to industry bailouts, including greenhouse gas emission reductions from airlines."   Quartz explains how it worked last time: "Starting in 2008, GM and Chrysler took about $80 billion from the US Treasury before declaring bankruptcy and restructuring operations. The Obama administration used the moment to curb the industry’s emissions, implementing strict new fuel efficiency standards. By 2025, the 54.5-miles-per-gallon standard will roughly halve emissions from cars and light trucks. Airlines and cruise lines may be next."   https://qz.com/1824804/coronavirus-could-lead-america-to-pass-its-biggest-climate-bill-ever/   And from Climate Change News: "For example, an automotive company could be bailed out on the condition it accelerates the electrification of the fleet when the immediate crisis passes. NGO Transport & Environment has urged EU governments to make any financial aid to airlines conditional on carriers paying taxes and starting to use low-carbon fuels once conditions improved. While stabilisation packages might not immediately assist the clean energy transition, the extraordinary scale of the response by governments and central banks is setting a precedent for similar measures to be rolled out to tackle the climate crisis."   https://www.climatechangenews.com/2020/03/23/governments-urged-attach-green-strings-long-term-coronavirus-recovery-plans/   MODEL Y HAS RADAR HEATER TO SOLVE AUTOPILOT ISSUES @greentheonly This just in, Model Y has radar heater outlined on the wiring diagrams.   Johannes Brorsson Can you tell if Model Y has the new 100M wiring?   @greentheonly it does not.   From CNET: "If your car has any sort of active safety or driver assist features, you probably know they may go offline should snow or ice cover their radar and other sensors. It's not a problem exclusive to Tesla, but the electric carmaker has installed a nifty system in its latest vehicle to help Autopilot operate in the coldest conditions. On Wednesday, a Twitter user published a wiring diagram for the Tesla Model Y that shows the electric SUV comes with a radar heater. With heat sent to the radar unit, it should help Autopilot operate even if the rest of the Model Y becomes caked with snow or ice."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-model-y-heated-radar-autopilot-cold/   WASHINGTON CHARGES UP FOR ELECTRIC CARS "Amid the devastating pandemic gripping the state of Washington, the state government is working hard to support healthcare providers, assist workers and businesses, and educate the public about keeping safe and healthy in these unprecedented times" reports NRDC.org: "ZEV requires automakers to ensure that at least 7 to 8% of new passenger vehicles are partly or fully zero-emitting by 2025, which will double the options Washington consumers will have available to them.  The program is in place in eleven other states across the country, including most recently Colorado. Together those states  comprise 30% of the U.S. auto market."   https://www.nrdc.org/experts/simon-mui/washington-charges-electric-cars   THIS $200,000 ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR COMES WITH A HOLOGRAPHIC DRIVING INSTRUCTOR "UK-based boutique carmaker Apex Motors unveiled its latest electric supercar, the AP-0 concept, earlier this month. The concept car boasts a carbon-fiber body and wheels, a feet-forward driving position, and a bumper-shredding ground clearance of just 3.7 inches. A beefy, 650-horsepower electric motor powers the rear wheels and sends the lightweight car to 62 mph in just 2.3 seconds, and the AP-0's design is dominated by a giant tail fin that Apex says is a nod to the styling of Le Mans and Formula One racers." says Business Insider: "Looks aside, the AP-0 does offer up some impressive features, if they ever make their way into a production model. The car promises a feet-forward driving position — where the feet stretch out in front of the hips, as opposed to having them below the waist like in most passenger cars — and an augmented-reality race instructor."   What else do you want for $173,000!   https://www.businessinsider.com/the-apex-ap-0-is-an-electric-race-car-streets-2020-3?r=US&IR=T   TESLA MAY EXPAND EV PRODUCTION IN CHINA, SAYS REPORT "Tesla has suspended electric vehicle (EV) production at its two US facilities in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, but may expand the capacity at its Gaigafactory 3 in Shanghai, eastern China, according to media reports from China." and reported by DigiTimes: "With production suspended in the US, the importance of the Shanghai plant is increasing, and Tesla may further expand its capacity, the reports said, speculating Tesla may let it produce Model Y ahead of schedule. The Shanghai plant was also shut down on January 31 due to the outbreak, but resumed production on February10, with 91% of worker having returned to work since March 6, the reports noted. Gigafactory 3 turned out 2,625 Model 3 cars in January 2020 and its weekly capacity has been hiked to more than 3,000 cars at present, with a target output of 150,000 Model 3 cars for 2020."   https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20200324PD207.html   NEW UK TEST FACILITY TO STREAMLINE EV BATTERY DEVELOPMENT AND OPTIMISATION TIME "Mahle Powertrain has opened a new, dedicated facility for the extensive testing of battery modules as a response to the growing time and cost pressures facing vehicle manufacturers seeking to develop latest generation automotive electrification technologies." writes Renewable Energy Magazine:L " the battery pack assembly and testing facility enables testing under simulated drive-cycle conditions to evaluate the performance of battery systems in real-use environments. Included within the testing remit is the ability to assess cells, modules and battery packs for steady state testing of open circuit voltage, storage capacity and thermal characteristics, including voltage response under high discharge, thermal behaviour and internal resistance.. The facility can conduct tests within the temperature range of -40oC to 100oC with precise humidity control."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/new-uk-test-facility-to-streamline-ev-20200324   NEW EMISSIONS RULES PUSHES GERMANY TO EVS "Under Europe's new CO2 rules, Germany has seen a spike in fully electric and hybrid vehicle sales." says Stuff.co.nz: " battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) jumped in volume by 76 per cent year-on-year for February sales. This is a good increase but it's nothing compared to how much the German market has embraced plug-in hybrids, which has grown by a whopping 279 per cent. In total, February saw record electrified sales of 16,508 units. All in, electric and electrified vehicle sales accounted for 6.9 per cent of the market for February and 6.7 per cent for the year so far. Volkswagen e-Golf took the top step in Germany, selling 1475 units over February. It was trailed by the Renault Zoe (1352) while the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV took a distant third with 821 sales."   https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/120495796/new-emissions-rules-pushes-germany-to-evs   5 APPS FOR FINDING EV CHARGING STATIONS PlugShare shows the locations of over 300,000 charging stations worldwide. ChargePoint is both an app and a network of over 100,000 charging points that are not listed on any other station finding apps. Show #688   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 5th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ELECTRIFY AMERICA COMPLETES 400 EV CHARGING STATIONS "Electrify America confirmed that they completed the installation of their first 400 EV charging stations only 20 months after starting the deployment" says Electrek: "They started deployment less than two years ago, and today, they confirmed that they have already achieved their initial goal of deploying 400 stations, including over 1,700 charge points. Brendan Jones, COO of Electrify America, confirmed the news to Electrek, but he clarified that while all the stations are deployed, some of them still need to be activated and are awaiting approval from the local electric utility. All of the company’s highway fast-charging stations are equipped to charge vehicles at up to 350 kW, even though most electric cars on the road today can’t receive that much power. The company says that they are planning for the future EV fleet as much as five years ahead. They also have 150 kW in urban areas for city charging."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/03/electrify-america-400-ev-charging-station-tesla-supercharger-rollout/   BIGGEST EU TESLA CHARGE PARK YET PLANNED IN GERMANY "Tesla’s largest fast-charging park in the EU will soon go online on a plot of land owned by bakery Roland Schüren at the Hilden motorway junction (A3/A46) near Düsseldorf." according to electrive: "According to local media reports, “on February 14th, a 16-pallet supercharger with a 1-megawatt transformer will initially go into operation there”. Tesla intends to build a total of 40 stalls of the latest generation V3 chargers with a peak output of up to 250 kilowatts at the Hilden intersection."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/03/biggest-european-tesla-charge-park-yet-planned-in-germany/   GM'S EV DAY "General Motors will be hosting an "EV Day" on the 4th of March. The announcement came from President Mark Reuss during the company's Capital Markets Day presentation on Wednesday. Besides helping to communicate the extent of this monumental shift at the country's largest automaker, we expect to learn a few specifics about its future EV plans." says Domenick at InsideEVs: "While the near-term will bring a refreshed Bolt EV for 2021, and (hopefully) the rumored Bolt EUV (electric utility vehicle), GM's electric future well and truly gets underway when it starts to roll out product based on its "BEV3" program. This is where the focus, future product-wise, at least, will be during GM's EV Day next month. We already know that the new 2022 Hummer EV truck will be the first BEV3 vehicle to be produced, starting in the Fall of 2021"   https://insideevs.com/news/397039/gm-ev-day-electric-future/   EVS CONTINUE SALES SUCCESS IN JANUARY 2020 FIGURES "The UK electric vehicle market continues to go from strength to strength, as the number of pure-electric cars tops the 100,000 mark in January 2020 - seeing registrations up more than 200% compared to last year." according to Chris at Next Green Car: "The latest set of statistics rom the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that more than 4,000 pure-electric cars were registered during the month. This figure, combined with more than 4,750 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars sold made January second best performing month in history in terms of electric vehicle market share at 5.9%. Total plug-in car registrations - pure-EVs and PHEVs combined - is now more than 273,000 units in the UK. Whilst still representing a relatively small proportion of the overall car market in the UK, it is clear that the demand is there from customers, as sales continue to grow as new models go on sale and greater numbers of EVs become available. Diesel sales continue to drop - -36% in January"   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8849/evs-continue-sales-success-in-january-2020-figures/   HERO’S NEW 53 MPH ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE "Hero Electric has taken to the Auto Expo 2020 show to unveil its first electric motorcycle, the Hero Electric AE-47, among other new personal electric mobility vehicles." says Micah at Electrek: "The AE-47 was unveiled today with a listed top speed of 85 km/h (53 mph) generated from a 4kW (5.3 hp) continuous-rated rear hub motor. While that isn’t likely to make the AE-47 feel at home on the highway, it’s certainly sufficient as a light electric motorcycle for city use."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/05/heros-new-53-mph-electric-motorcycle-gets-100-mile-range-estimated-under-2k/   TESLA TO UTILIZE SIDE CAMERAS TO HELP DRIVERS BACK UP @teslaownersSV Can we get the side cameras to show up when backing up?   @elonmusk Yes   Teslarati reports: "Tesla vehicles have eight cameras that practically serve as the eyes of the vehicle, giving it a 360-degree view of its environment. When backing up though, drivers rely only on the rearview camera and sensors to park. Being able to utilize the side cameras will give drivers a better view of any spots they want to back up into, thereby reducing annoying incidents of wheel rash, dings, or in some cases, dents."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-side-cameras-back-up-assist-elon-musk/   AMAZON AND RIVIAN DISH DETAILS ON THEIR NEW ELECTRIC DELIVERY VAN "Rivian may be best known for its upcoming R1T electric pickup truck, but Amazon may give the startup the most exposure yet. After detailing plans of a partnership between the online retail giant and the electric vehicle maker, the two surprised with plans to create a purpose-built electric van for Amazon deliveries." reports CNET: "On Tuesday, both companies gave us a closer look at what's going on behind the scenes to bring this package delivery vehicle to lifeThe cockpit will include a totally digital instrument cluster, central screen with Alexa built-in (obviously) and Amazon's logistics management. Drivers won't need any external devices for mapping and Alexa will handle all voice commands to keep workers from entering information manually. We'll first see the vans hit the road in 2021 with a deployment of 10,000. Then, a total of 100,000 of them will be on the streets delivering packages by 2030."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-amazon-electric-delivery-van-design-features-2021/   SHELL DOUBLES ULTRARAPID-CHARGING STATIONS IN GERMANY "In addition to the already planned 50 HPC columns with 150 kW that Shell is building with the energy supplier EnBW, the oil company is now promising another 50 HPC columns in a second wave, apparently primarily in northern Germany." picks up electrive: "Shell, for example, took over the German battery manufacturer Sonnen in February 2019, the charging infrastructure specialist NewMotion in October 2018 and, at the beginning of the year, the US company Greenlots, which also focuses on this field. In mid-December, Shell installed the first HPC column in Germany at the filling station in Reutlingen."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/05/shell-doubles-fast-charging-stations-in-germany/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #640   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 14th November 2019. FORD AD FOR MUSTANG MACH-E [audio] "Ford’s upcoming battery-electric crossover SUV won’t just feature Mustang-inspired styling, it’ll also wear the famed sports car’s name. Officially christened Mustang Mach-E, the Blue Oval’s latest EV is due to show its face this Sunday, November 17th." says Greg Fink for Motor1.com: "Ford will live-stream the reveal of the new model with the assistance of actor Idris Elba, who's set to join the Mach-E on stage. If prospective buyers like what Ford shows, they can then head over to Ford.com at the end of the reveal (which is slated to come to a close at 9:30 PM EST) and reserve a Mustang Mach-E by submitting a $500 refundable deposit"   And as the car won't have a manual gearbox, with EV's being as easy to drive as an automatic, they're missing a trick if they don't call it a Mach E Auto.   https://www.motor1.com/news/382153/ford-mustang-mach-e-ev-crossover-name/   LUCID MOTORS, CONFIRMS LUXURY EV PRODUCTION IN ARIZONA "After almost three years, the Tesla competitor has finally confirmed that the local Planning and Zoning Commission of the Arizona city approved its multi-year site plan on Nov. 6. Land grading has already begun in September, and the company estimates that production will start before the end of 2020." reports IBTimes.com: "Atieva, the parent company of Lucid, couldn't get the funding to get Lucid Air, the premier electric vehicle (EV) that the company unveiled back in 2016, in the line of production. But with a $1 billion investment from Saudi Arabia through the kingdom's sovereign wealth fund in 2018, issues concerning its eventual roll-out dissolved."   https://www.ibtimes.com/tesla-competitor-lucid-motors-confirms-luxury-ev-production-arizona-2863689   VOLKSWAGEN BREAKS GROUND ON EXPANSION FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE PRODUCTION IN UNITED STATES Volkswagen of America today marked the start of construction for its electric vehicle production facility. The Chattanooga site, where production begins in 2022, will be Volkswagen’s North American assembly base for electric vehicles. Volkswagen began long-range EV production earlier this month in Zwickau, Germany, and will then roll out assembly worldwide, including in Anting and Foshan, in China, in 2020 and in the German cities of Emden and Hanover by 2022. The Chattanooga site will be VW’s North-American hub for EV manufacturing. Volkswagen’s investment of about $800 million in the Chattanooga facility will require the addition of about 1,000 jobs. The production version of the ID. CROZZ will initially be assembled in Zwickau. Production of that vehicle is set to begin in Chattanooga in 2022.   GERMAN STATES HAVE BEEN COURTING TESLA There's a great analysis of the Gigafactory 4 decision from Bloomberg reporters. "Ramona Pop [a mayor of Berlin and Senator for Economy, Energy and Enterprises] responded with a two-page letter that waxed lyrical about Musk as a pioneer and visionary and offered financial sweeteners to attract him to a city bustling with a vibrant tech scene and a network of auto research institutes." says Bloomberg: "Two federal states that border France also touted their virtues. he European Gigafactory would sit on the outskirts of Berlin, with an additional engineering and design center within the city limits.  Labor costs in eastern Germany are generally lower than in the traditional engineering hubs in the southern part of the country."   But is labor cost the real issue here? As per Reuters: "While the average combustion engine takes 3.5 hours to make, and the average transmission requires 2.7 hours of assembly, an electric motor takes only about 1 hour to assemble, consultants at Alix Partners said in their Global Automotive Outlook study. Today the biggest cost factor is still battery packs, which amount to between 30% and 50% of the cost of an electric vehicle."   Back to Bloomberg: "The area where Tesla plans to put the factory, called Gruenheide just east of Berlin in the state of Brandenburg, provides quick access via the Autobahn and a link to public transport. It’s a site that BMW had considered before choosing the city of Leipzig a few hours south for a new factory in 2001. The government in Brandenburg, one of five federal states in the former communist east, also lobbied hard to win over Musk, offering at least 100 million euros in aid."   Reuters reports on the financial aid being given to all auto makers to ensure GErmany's dominance: "German carmakers and suppliers are tapping in to a 1 billion euro ($1.10 billion) fund set up by Germany to increase battery cell production and are further aided by a government-funded research facility to increase battery cell development know-how."   And the key section from the Bloomberg piece: "Musk had a demand that was as clear as it was hard to execute for notoriously bureaucratic Germans: to build the site as swiftly as the one in Shanghai, according to Brandenburg’s economy minister, Joerg Steinbach.";   We know all future Gigafactories will be all-in-one solutions, they will make the battery, the powertrains and stamp the vehicles. We know it will be MOdel Y for Germany.   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-13/elon-musk-s-german-factory-started-with-love-letter-from-berlin   https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-tesla-gigafactory-germany-strategy/german-automation-talent-powers-musks-battery-move-to-europe   MAJOR BATTERY STORAGE FACILITY PLANNED IN GOLETA "the 60-megawatt set of lithium-ion Megapacks — utility-scale batteries that have 60 percent more energy density than the Powerpack — would store power and return it to the grid when needed." reports the Santa Barbara Independent: "SoCal Edison turned to storage after the proposed Puente natural gas power plant in Oxnard was denied by the California Energy Commission in 2017. Goleta’s existing Ellwood peaker plant, like many gas-powered plants, faces retirement. Smaller 10- and 20-megawatt battery storage facilities are planned in Carpinteria, Ventura, and a second one in Goleta."   https://www.independent.com/2019/11/13/major-battery-storage-facility-planned-in-goleta/   TESLA PLANS NEW MASSIVE V3 SUPERCHARGER STATION CONNECTING LA TO PHX "Tesla has promised to incrementally roll out more Supercharging stations over time, with specific emphasis on its new V3 technology, reportedly in the process of starting construction on a huge, 28-stall Supercharger station that will connect Los Angeles to Phoenix." reports Steven Loveday at InsideEVs"   https://insideevs.com/news/382042/tesla-plans-v3-supercharger-station-la-phx/   And from BuffaloXpress.com: "The Tesla Supercharger station in Kettleman City between San Francisco and Los Angeles and isn’t Tesla’s most significant on the earth. However, it’s the largest within the US, and it’s the most representative of Tesla’s vision for charging stations. It’s equipped with not solely 40 Supercharger stalls but in addition batteries, solar arrays, and even a lounge for Tesla owners. The brand new Supercharger V3 stalls ought to make the trip a little bit faster with nearly twice the power output than the V2 chargers."   http://buffaloxpress.com/telsa-to-upgrade-its-largest-supercharger-station-with-v3-technology/4106/   TESLA SECURES MANUFACTURING LICENSE FOR GIGAFACTORY 3 "Tesla has been able to get its manufacturing license for Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China. With Tesla already demonstrating Chinese produced Model 3s to the Chinese press, this step is seen as the last official hurdle before Tesla officially begins production and starts the process of ramping up consumer cars “Made in China.” says CleanTechnica: "Media outlet SINA reports that MIIT has agreed to allow Tesla (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. to be a pure electric passenger car manufacturer."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/14/tesla-secures-manufacturing-license-for-gigafactory-3-lets-roll/   LA ADDS HUNDREDS OF EV CHARGERS TO STREETLIGHTS "The City of Los Angeles has installed EV charging stations directly attached to more than 130 streetlight poles. Hundreds more are planned. The streamlined solution to electric-car charging has been deployed in major European cities but not so much yet in America." according to Bradley at Electrek: "The city’s conversion of street lights to energy-efficient LEDs made the EV solution possible. Show #640   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 13th November 2019. TESLA’S MODEL 3 SUCCESS HITS BMW THE HARDEST Part 4 of Bloomberg's Tesla Owner survey is out and it's a recommended read. Here are some highlights: "We asked 5,000 owners about what it’s like to live with Elon Musk’s electric car. Here’s what we found. The average Model 3 goes for around $50,000, which is more than any of the top 10 vehicles that buyers traded in from other brands, according to responses to Bloomberg’s Model 3 owners survey. No other sedan in America is generating more revenue. While Tesla took the largest number of customers from Toyota, it affects the Japanese automaker very little. That’s because Toyota’s market share in the U.S. is enormous. [However] as a proportion of a brand’s U.S. sales. It shows BMW to be the automaker with the most to lose—almost five times more vulnerable than Mercedes-Benz.  Many said Tesla’s mission to accelerate the adoption of electric cars creates an unusual sense of owner camaraderie. About 55% of respondents said their opinion of Musk influenced their decision to purchase the car. Model 3 Owners Are Tesla’s Biggest Sales Force."   In terms of the brands most vulnerable, BMW, Mini, Audi, Acura, Infiniti, Porsche, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.   https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-tesla-model-3-survey/market-evolution.html#intro   TESLA ADDS MORE BATTERY CAPACITY TO HELP EV OWNERS ESCAPE BUSH-FIRES "Tesla has issued a temporary software update to vehicle owners in regions of NSW and Queensland currently impacted by bush fires. It extends the available battery capacity in some models that otherwise have that capacity locked by the vehicle’s software." reports TheDriven.io: "the software update would allow owners of models that include the Tesla S 60 and 60D, which come installed with a 75kWh battery, but that is limited by software that makes only 60kWh available"   https://thedriven.io/2019/11/13/with-flick-of-switch-tesla-adds-more-battery-capacity-to-help-ev-owners-escape-bush-fires/   SEAT MII ELECTRIC SEAT starts its electric offensive with the introduction of the Mii electric. The new model is SEAT’s first all-electric production vehicle and lays the groundwork for future members to join the family. More EVs and PHEVs are due in the near future, including the allelectric SEAT el-Born, plug-in hybrid versions of the Tarraco and Leon, and high-performance plug-in hybrid versions of CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon. The Home Charge option adds a charging cable to charge directly at home using a 2.3 kW system, while Fast brings CCS fast charging capability with a DC charging capacity of 40kW.   The all-electric city car is the first model to include SEAT CONNECT. The system gives remote access and management of the vehicle, so customers can review driving data, parking position, the vehicle’s status, including doors and lights, manage the charging process via the e-Manager and the ability to control air-conditioning remotely – an important technology when you’re faced with extremes in climate – all from a smartphone app.   From electrive: "Seat makes the affordability of the electric model a selling point: Mii costs around the same as a combustion engine car of comparable size and power, only with lower running costs  – and here Seat also refers to the significantly lower maintenance costs of electric vehicles. With regard to equipment, Seat has decided to keep the range simple: With the Mii electric and Mii electric Plus"   EMPLOYERS SHOULD SEE WORKPLACE CHARGING AS MORE THAN A PERK FOR ITS WORKERS "Workplace electric vehicle charging is often seen as an employment perk both by businesses and their (current or prospective) employees, but that strategy could be short-sighted. On-site electric chargers may actually be a boon for business, a report suggests, potentially bringing in customers and attracting a stable, engaged workforce." according to Green Car Reports: "The study, conducted by Wood Mackenzie (a subsidiary of data analytics firm Verisk), says that businesses underestimate the value of on-site electric chargers. Data suggest that not only might electric chargers attract customers, but the particular types of buyers they bring in are highly desirable."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125927_report-employers-should-see-workplace-charging-as-more-than-a-perk-for-its-workers   CHINA: 46.38 GWH OF EV BATTERIES DEPLOYED SO FAR THIS YEAR "The Chinese EV lithium-ion battery market grew so far this year to over 46 GWh, and close to 51% falls on CATL. BYD's share over 10 months is 20%, which together is almost 71%." reports InsideEVs: "Despite the YTD numbers being healthy, the past three months bring decline. Let's take a look at the details, provided by the Moneyball.   Top Chinese EV battery manufacturers by installed capacity (January-October):   CATL - 23.58  GWh (up 65%) BYD - 9.23 GWh (up 12%) Guoxuan - 2.37 GWh (up 43%) Lishen - 1.27 GWh (down 1%) CALB - 1.12 GWh (up 307%) Over ten months of 2019, some 46.38 GWh of batteries were deployed in New Energy Vehicles, which is 38% more than a year ago:   Passenger cars - 33.61 GWh (up 55%) Buses - 9.39 GWh (down 8%) SPV (other) - 3.39 GWh (up 19%)"   https://insideevs.com/news/381619/china-46-gwh-ev-batteries-deployed/   TESLA AUTOPILOT NEARS 2 BILLION MILES DRIVEN, FULL-SELF DRIVING CONTINUES TO IMPROVE "Tesla is yet to issue a formal announcement about its total Autopilot miles to date, though a model by MIT researcher Lex Fridman has predicted that the 2-billion-mile mark will be crossed sometime on November 11, 2019. That being said, Fridman’s model might even be a bit conservative, considering that Tesla’s fleet is growing by the day and more and more vehicles are traveling across the globe on Autopilot thanks to the Model 3 ramp." says Simon at Teslarati: "If Tesla does confirm Autopilot’s 2-billion-mile milestone, it would be a great accomplishment for the electric car maker. After all, it took 4 over four years for Tesla’s fleet of vehicles to reach 1 billion real-world miles on Autopilot. Provided that Lex Fridman’s estimates are accurate, Autopilot’s next billion miles seems to have taken less than a year to accomplish."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-autopilot-hits-2-billion-miles-full-self-driving/   NISSAN IS IN ABSOLUTE SHAMBLES From Forbes: "In Europe the Leaf also seems to be paying the price for being the pioneer overtaken by late-comers with better technology and sexier-looking models, said Berlin-based automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt. “The Leaf is in danger of being in the position of standing before the EV wall and assisting others over it, thanks to establishing the electric market early on with its first generation model, yet potentially finding it more of an effort to clear the wall itself once the other manufacturers have cleared it,” Schmidt said."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2019/11/12/nissan-leaf-sales-falter-as-new-competitors-offer-better-technology-looks/#7aacee5f1a74   From Jalopnik: "Hot on the heels of Honda announcing sales down, Nissan laid out a historically bad report of profits being down an amazing 70 percent, the company’s worst outlook in 11 years, as the Japan Times reports: Nissan, whose financial performance has been in the doldrums for nearly two years, cut its forecast for operating profit to 150 billion in the year through March 2020, from a previous forecast of 230 billion. The new forecast means earnings for the full year will be at their worst in 11 years."   https://jalopnik.com/nissan-is-absolute-shambles-1839799530   SHELL FIXES FIRST EV CHARGING STATIONS IN U.S "Shell’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the United States, has been installed at Boston Logan International Airport."   says PetrolWorld.com: "The 50-kW Veelfil-RT DC fast-charging stations were installed by Greenlots, a Los Angeles-based provider of EV charging and energy management software that was acquired by Shell in 2019, with the units manufactured by Tritium, an Australian firm. "   https://www.petrolworld.com/headlines/item/33599-netherlands-shell-fixes-first-ev-charging-stations-in-u-s   And from Fleet Europe: "Shell are extending their EV offer to our customers’ homes and workplaces.  The acquisition of NewMotion in Europe has enabled Shell to provide charging points to tens of thousands of homes and businesses and it is offering a similar proposition with Greenlots in the US. To help enable cheaper charging for their customers, Shell have also been piloting smart-charging technology in the UK and Germany that helps integrate EVs into the power grid at times when overall demand is at its lowest."   https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/new-energies/europe/features/transition-low-carbon-energy-shell-fleet-solutions?t%5B0%5D=Shell&t%5B1%5D=NewMotion&curl=1   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   If you had to pick ONE upside to driving an EV, what would be it be?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 254 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #614   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 18th October 2019. CLOSER LOOK AT THE XC40 RECHARGE A reminder about the 249 mile, 78kWh battery with 75kWh usable, Volvo XC40. A fun tidbit from The Verge: "Interestingly enough, the battery almost ended up being much weaker, with fewer cells and less capacity, than what was eventually decided upon. According to Henrik Green, Volvo’s chief technology officer, the company’s engineers were halfway through the XC40 Recharge’s development cycle when something big happened in the EV space that threw them for a loop: the unveiling of the Model 3. When Volvo learned that the Model 3 would have a range of over 300 miles, the company’s engineers set to work to do what they could to increase their own range by upgrading the vehicle’s battery. “We decided to go for a bigger size than we originally thought,” Green said. That meant contacting the automaker’s battery suppliers, South Korea’s LG Chem and CTAL in China, to add modules to its battery to improve the performance. If customers wanted electric cars with bigger batteries and longer ranges, then Volvo would have to deliver, he said. “That was not a fun decision,” Green added, “being adamant about quality and everything about producing vehicles, doing that very late in the program was super critical.”"   https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/17/20917697/volvo-xc40-recharge-electric-ev-photos-hands-on   TESLA’S AFFORDABLE MODEL 3 RECEIVES MORE RANGE AND UPDATED PRICE Tesla recently added an additional 10 miles of range to the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, allowing one of the company’s most affordable vehicles to travel 250 miles on a single charge. The update comes amid Tesla’s revised delivery window for its vehicles." says Teslarati: "The Model 3 Standard Range Plus’ range boost comes at a price, with Tesla increasing the cost of the vehicle by $500. Yet, despite this, the Model 3 remains a super reasonable buy at $39,490.  In addition to the additional range and increase in pricing for the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, Tesla has revised its estimated delivery timelines for its vehicles. The Standard Range Plus and Long Range Model 3, for example, now have an estimated 6-10 weeks for delivery, while the Performance variant now requires 8-10 weeks before the vehicle is ready to be handed over. Vehicles now require an extremely affordable $100 as a non-refundable deposit for its entire electric vehicle lineup. Tesla’s Solid Black paint, which used to cost $750, has also been adjusted to $1,000."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-standard-range-boost-price-update/   UK pricing, according to AutoExpress: "Tesla has raised the price of the Model 3, in the car’s third price-change in the last six months. Prices for the base-model Standard Range Plus and mid-tier Long Range variant have increased by roughly £1,000 to £38,500 and £47,000 respectively. The flagship Model 3 Performance has increased by around £2,000 to £52,000."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/tesla/model-3/106152/tesla-model-3-prices-raised-across-the-range   TESLA MODEL Y PROTOTYPE SPOTTED IN WASHINGTON The Tesla Model Y prototype sightings continue and now a Model Y has been spotted in the state of Washington – indicating the likely start of long-distance testing." says electrek: "Now a Model Y prototype, which appears to be the same one spotted in Fremont yesterday, was spotted at a Supercharger station in Vancouver, Washington (via Shamus Johnson on Twitter). The Tesla Supercharger in Vancouver, Washington is 668 miles away from Fremont, which could mean that Tesla is starting to long-distance test some pre-production Model Y prototypes. Tesla vehicles generally go through an extensive test program in different conditions and climates for at least a year ahead of production."   https://electrek.co/2019/10/17/tesla-model-y-prototype-spotted-long-distance-testing/   TESLA GETS APPROVAL TO START MANUFACTURING IN CHINA "Tesla Inc was added to a government list of approved automotive manufacturers, China’s industry ministry said on Thursday, as it granted the electric-vehicle maker a certificate it needs to start production in the country." reports Reuters: "The list was published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This means “the green light is fully given to Tesla for production in China,” said Yale Zhang, head of the Shanghai-based consultancy Automotive Foresight. Tesla can start production any time, he said. Tesla intends to produce at least 1,000 Model 3s a week from the Shanghai factory by the end of this year, as it tries to boost sales in the world’s biggest auto market and avoid higher import tariffs imposed on U.S. cars."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-tesla/tesla-gets-approval-to-start-manufacturing-in-china-idUSKBN1WW0NM   TESLA’S CHINA PLANT IS HOOKED UP TO STATE GRID POWER SUPPLY "Tesla Inc.’s first Chinese car factory is officially plugged in." according to Bloomberg: "State Grid Corp of China has opened the first transmission line in a power connection project that increases electricity supply to the Tesla plant to a level required for preliminary production, according to a statement from the Chinese company’s Shanghai branch. State Grid said it will eventually increase the power supply eightfold for the factory to run at capacity. State Grid said the project - involving 55 kilometers of cables and about 17 kilometers of ducts - was among the quickest it has completed, taking only six months."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-10-17/tesla-s-shanghai-plant-gets-hooked-up-to-state-grid-power-supply?utm_source=google   PHASE 2 OF TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 "According to a report by China’s Global Times, Tesla has completed construction of the parts of its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai that will be dedicated to producing automobiles. Now it has begun work on “phase 2” of the factory, which will house a battery manufacturing facility." says CleanTechnica: "Feng Shiming, a veteran analyst for the Chinese auto industry analyst, tells the Global Times he has heard from Tesla employees at GF3 that the first batch of vehicle batteries for the Model 3 will be fully assembled as of October 30. He predicts that mass production at the Shanghai factory will not start until after the Spring Festival holidays in January next year. The factory built in the first phase will merely assemble parts shipped from the US, Feng says."   FORD TRANSIT CUSTOM PLUG-IN HYBRID "Underpinning the Transit PHEV is Ford’s popular 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which is paired to a 92.9kW electric motor. The total output is 124bhp and 355Nm of torque.  Interestingly Ford describes the engine as a ‘range extender’ – suggesting that they expect drivers to just use electric power for lots of the time. A 13.6kWh battery allows for a claimed 35 miles of electric range." says the website carkeys: "Our only gripe is that as soon as the electricity runs out, you’re left with an engine that lacks the punch to move a van of this size. The CVT automatic transmission is perfectly acceptable but not particularly smooth or refined."   From ford.co.uk: "The engine does not directly drive the wheels, instead it helps charge Transit’s on-board batteries on the go.  Ford is targeting a zero emission range of 31 miles from a full charge – more than enough for most city delivery rounds. If the operator needs to travel further in between charging stops, the EcoBoost engine chips in to top the batteries up."   https://www.ford.co.uk/shop/specialist-sales/fleet/phev/fords-plug-in-hybrid-electric   LG CHEM SEES ELECTRIC VEHICLES ACCOUNTING FOR 15% OF ALL CAR SALES IN 2024 "South Korea’s LG Chem, one of the leading electric vehicle (EV) battery makers, expects global sales of EVs to grow more than five-fold from 2018 levels to account for about 15% of global vehicle sales in 2024, it said on Thursday." reports Reuters UK: "Speaking at a conference in Seoul, LG Chem’s battery chief Kim Jong-hyun said tighter regulations in Europe and China, especially from next year, and the rise of autonomous vehicles and ride-sharing services would serve as “catalysts for the explosive growth” of EVs."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-lg-chem-electric/lg-chem-sees-electric-vehicles-accounting-for-15-of-all-car-sales-in-2024-idUKKBN1WW0O0   FORD INTRODUCES NORTH AMERICA’S LARGEST EV CHARGING NETWORK Ford is giving future all-electric vehicle customers the confidence to enjoy a hassle-free electric lifestyle. By providing easy access to more electric vehicle public charging stations in North America than any other automaker. Ford is providing two years of complimentary access to North America’s largest network – the FordPass Charging Network – for easy and convenient pay-as-you-drive charging. The FordPass Charging Network includes more than 12,000 charging stations with more than 35,000 plugs, making public chargers as common as some of the most popular pharmacy or coffee chains. Ford is working with Greenlots to bring together multiple charging providers to develop the FordPass Charging Network, making it easy for customers to find and pay for charging all through FordPass or their vehicle’s screen.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/10/ford-introduces-north-americas-largest-ev-charging-network/   SURGING SUV DEMAND IS CANCELING OUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT FROM ELECTRIC CARS "If worldwide demand for SUVs continues to grow at its current pace, the carbon emissions from these larger vehicles will outweigh the benefits from electric vehicles, a new study from the International Energy Agency found. The number of SUVs on the road around the world grew from 35 million in 2010 to over 200 million last year, representing 60% of the increase in the global car fleet over the 8-year period." according to CNBC: "From 2010 - 2018, SUVs were the second-largest contributor to the global increase in carbon emissions behind the power sector, the study found. Show #561   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 25th August 2019. AUSTRALIAN & NZ TESLA MODEL 3 DELIVERIES BEGIN! From Geoff Lowe, Director Infotools.com: "Hi Martyn, Just took delivery of one of the first two Model 3s in New Zealand. Another very happy looking chap started his induction just before me. I love it! Great delivery experience. I think the Tesla team were as excited as me!"   Aaron Green @aaronrgreen: "Successful collection today at midday. We were the 5th NZ/AU car and 3rd performance. Just arrived in Hamilton have recorded all the experience so will edit and upload soon. Final stop Taupo tonight at destination hotel / charger."   From John Horblow in New Zealand, because as I've just done news on Australia I feel that I should read out his email from Thursday: "Hi Martyn. We use to live in the UK, the brits alway took notice of their fravorite nephew Australia but never mentioned little chap New Zealand. You mentioned fast chargers in Australia last week & have mentioned aussie a number of times in the past. Have you ever checked out whats happening in NZ re our fast charger network? Zoom in on the map and take a look at whats under construction in the capital Wellington... https://charge.net.nz/map/ p.s. NZ EV community is 95%  2nd hand Japaneese and UK  Nissan Leaf"   TESLA STARTS SELLING MODEL 3 IN EASTERN EUROPE "Tesla has announced its expansion to Eastern Europe and opened sales for the Model 3 in selected countries. Electric car buyers in Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Hungary may now order their Tesla online." reports Electrive: ""An open question also remains, where and how Tesla will service these electric cars as the announcement came as a tweet with just the basic information. However, the opening of a Tesla store in Budapest is planned, and people in Poland have been buying Teslas for some time. A view on the Tesla map shows an open service centre in Warsaw indeed and one in the Czech capital of Prague as well."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/08/25/tesla-starts-selling-model-3-in-eastern-europe/   NIO DELIVERED 673 ES6 IN JULY "NIO is still producing the all-electric ES6 in very small numbers. In its debut month (June) 413 units were sold, while in July 673 units were delivered to customers." according to Pedro at PushEVs.com: "What makes the all-electric NIO ES6 special is its 84 kWh battery pack made with NCM 811 battery cells from CATL. The battery pack has an energy density of 170 Wh/kg, which puts it on pair with the Tesla Model 3 (estimated at 168 Wh/kg)."   https://pushevs.com/2019/08/24/nio-delivered-673-es6-in-july/   SHELL INSTALLS FIRST ABB EV FAST CHARGER IN SINGAPORE "Shell subsidiary Greenlots has installed an ABB DC fast charger in Singapore, the first of 10 to be installed at Shell stations in the country over the next few months." says CHargedEVs magazine: "Greenlots CEO Brett Hauser said, “Greenlots and Shell have been exploring synergies since we were acquired earlier this year. This project demonstrates our collective commitment to enable electrified transportation around the world, specifically in Singapore, where Greenlots was founded, and bolsters Greenlots’s expansion in Southeast Asia. Supporting Shell’s EV charging network in Singapore is a logical extension of the work we’ve been doing there to provide charging solutions at home, at work, for fleets and on-the-go.”   However those chargers are just 50kW.   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/shells-greenlots-installs-first-abb-ev-fast-charger-in-singapore/   TESLA’S SUPERCHARGER NETWORK DELIVERS INCREDIBLE 72 GWH OF ELECTRICITY IN A MONTH "Tesla has released a rare statistic about its Supercharger network. The automaker says that its fast-charging network delivered 72 GWh of electricity in just a month." says Fred at Electrek: "In 2014, about two years after the Supercharger network launched, Tesla had only delivered 10 GWh and could deliver about 72 MWh in a day. Over the last year, the Tesla Supercharger network has grown a lot, and the automaker now says that it can deliver 72 GWh in just a month."   https://electrek.co/2019/08/25/tesla-supercharger-delivered-incredible-72-gwh-electricity-month/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS MSHunter • 4 hours ago Charge by minute makes sense for rapid chargers as it encourages people to not use them if they can't use the full available speed that the DC charger can provide. Though a few ac chargers should be available at all CCS /chademo charging locations for hybrid and ac fast charging vehicles   Hitstirrer • 9 hours ago On the subject of the supply of electrons at public access stations, it's clear to me that all supply should be charged by the number of kWh's delivered. And for access and payment to be by contactless bank card as the default method. If the app fans insist on messing around more then by all means pander to their fetish as an additional system. But under no circumstances should more rational people be forced to jump through those kinds of hoops.   alan baker • 1 day ago (edited) Agree with the comment of prices on Electric charge ( electric supply) points they should display the price per KW, and also enable payment by a standard bank RFID card. Just like a petrol pump. BP are doing this at the charge points at their petrol stations.   Mark Fitzpatrick • 2 days ago I like charging by kwh but in ohio usa they charge by minute.  25 to 35 cents for dc charging.  Thats right chademo is going no were and doesnt have too. I have no proplem with our combined chargers we have . CCS/chademo. 500,000 plus people driving leafs. We cant just go to nissan and get a ccs port installed.  I love that they are installing 200 new 100 kwh dc chargers. The new leaf plus can take up too 100 kw.   Stefan Weilhartner • 2 days ago no, i don't agree with only paying for the kWh on a charging station. you have to consider that a charging station is expensive and therefor if someone parks it's car on it without charging you block the company that owns it from getting back the investment. an it is important that the company that makes these charging stations get back the investment as soon as possible to have fresh money to build more and better charging stations! so everyone who parks on a charging spot, having an EV or not, charging or not has to pay the same amount of money per minute. and of course it should be expensive to park there so that no one blocks this spot. maybe around 5-10 euro per hour. on the other side the kWh then could be cheap - practically just forwarding the costs without benefit for the energy. that would encourage the users from that spot to NOT block tha   ateeqn1985 • 3 days ago Question of the week.. Although charging by kWh is more transparent, I wouldn't categorically rule out other approaches particularly on rapids., ie. To avoid PHEVs blocking rapids, BEVs  charging >90% on rapid.   My home electricity bill comprises of a usage part and a fixed daily rate....not simply usage   Ashley Hill • 4 days ago (edited) QOTW: disagree.  The ongoing cost for a parking space is significant and some spaces are vastly more expensive to have an maintain due to security, multi level buildings etc. As an example, we are having an issue here in Australia (Wollongong from memory) where Tesla is only leasing two of the parking spaces at a supercharger location and the other ones (4?)  have general parking even though there are fitted with superchargers.     JOHN JOSEPH In many States in the US, EV charging stations are NOT allowed to charge by the KWH by the State Government.  Only electric utilities are allowed to sell electricity by the KWH. My actual experience on Tesla superchargers shows that it is currently cheaper on the Tesla superchargers that charge by the minute. Use A better route Planner and you will see, for example, that Ohio which is by the minute is cheaper than West Virginia, which is by the KWH on an interstate trip.     CHARLIE FOX Thinking about the question of the week. I totally agree with paying for what an EV 'downloads' into the car. However, electricity pricing changes at different times of the day and seasonally. Those changes could literally mean that the location you are getting the power from needs to do essentially instantaneous pricing. I would imagine you need to observe the pricing as you charge with the idea that you might stop the charging (or automatically) if the price is going to shoot up for the electricity. People may not like this aspect unless an app makes it easy.   MARKUS LAFER Hi Martyn, There are too many single phase charging cars out there blocking charging ports if they pay only for kWh. Pay per time will push drivers to unplug after reaching 80%.  By the way: is the unplugsticker.eu service known in UK too allowing to contact the owner anonymous and ask for releasing  the charging port?   WALTER MACVANE To understand why EV charging networks charge by the minute, you have to understand the background. In many jurisdictions there is only one Identity Who legally can sell electricity due to utility regulation. So in order to Deliver the energy required, they need to sell the service through infrastructure utilization. Whether that is a fee for parking or a fee for usage, as long as they are not directly selling Electricity. Some providers, in order to recuperate Energy costs, will charge higher rates for higher throughput. So the question of the week should be reworded as: “ should governments change regulations so that energy can be sold directly to consumers by charging networks?”   EDUARD PERTINEZ 85% of petrol price in gas stations is pure petrol reselling, but then you are charged by many other things, such as convinience, service, servicing speed (amount of free pumps available), customer loyalty and many others. That other variables can amount to 7% to 30% of total cost of refuelling, so it means that some stations charge you 4 times more for the same gas. Quantity and time are simply constant one to the other in gas refuelling.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week.   Asking current EV drivers, how often do you charge and why?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 244 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #560   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 24th August 2019. Thank you to two new Patrons over the weekend. First up new PRODUCER BODO and EXECUTIVE PRODCER NORTHERNEXPLORERS   A follow up from Barry Wolf about navigation systems in EVs showing petrol stations: "When I use Apple CarPlay (my lower trim level e-Golf does not include built in navigation), pressing "Destinations" brings up a series of buttons for points of interest, one of which provides a list of nearby gas stations. It seems the VW group has made this feature available for Audis and VWs. Maybe the Taycan will get this feature, too? I have complained about this to VW, but VW blames Apple. Since the Bolt EV also uses Apple CarPlay but shows an EV charging station button instead of the gas pump button, it is clear VW dropped the ball on correctly programming the iPhone interface."   EVGO AND ELECTRIFY AMERICA TEAM UP TO MAKE CHARGERS MORE ACCESSIBLE "Finding a fast charger in the U.S. just got a lot easier for a lot of electric-car drivers. Two of America's largest fast-charging networks announced an agreement Thursday to allow each other's users to charge at their charging sites without signing up for new memberships or payment plans." according to Eric for Green Car Reports: "Electrify America and EVgo agreed to a roaming partnership that will allow members of either service to charge at any EVgo or Electrify America charging station. Each of the networks already has individual agreements with the nation's other largest networks, ChargePoint and Greenlots. That means that drivers of EVs other than Teslas are have a widespread network in many ways on par with Tesla's Superchargers that they can use to top off their batteries. Unlike Tesla's Supercharger network, however, EVgo chargers are concentrated in and around cities—where EVgo points out that most EVs drive—rather than along highways between cities where the chargers could allow drivers to make longer trips between cities, as Tesla's Superchargers do."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124689_evgo-and-electrify-america-team-up-to-make-chargers-more-accessible   BLOOMBERG: LG CHEM TO SUPPLY BATTERIES FOR TESLA MODEL 3 IN CHINA "According to Bloomberg, Tesla has selected LG Chem as the non-exclusive supplier of lithium-ion battery cells for Model 3 that will be produced at the Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China." reports InsideEVS: "The origin of this revelation are Bloomberg's unofficial sources. LG Chem is expected to supply Tesla with 21700 cylindrical cells, produced in Nanjing, some 200 miles (320 km) west of Shanghai. Separately, Tesla is reportedly still in talks with CATL, which also might become a supplier. The report doesn't say anything about negotiations with Panasonic, which was the main battery supplier for Tesla so far. LG Chem batteries also to be used for the base version of Tesla Model Y, once production of those will be launched in the future."   https://insideevs.com/news/366692/lg-chem-batteries-tesla-model-3-china/   And meanwhile from Teslarati: "In an interview, Tesla Global Vice President Grace Tao stated that Gigafactory 3 is already mostly complete. Tao noted that the installation of production equipment within the factory is progressing well, and machines are already being debugged in preparation for trial Model 3 production runs. Local reports have also noted that Gigafactory 3’s substation is expected to start powering the complex sometime next month. Barring any unexpected delays, this could result in Gigafactory 3 coming to life as early as the end of September."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-lg-chem-battery-supplier-report/   PORSCHE TAYCAN MIGHT STREAM MOVIES WITHOUT DISTRACTING DRIVER A new report featured in Motor1: "claims that Porsche plans to offer video streaming in the Taycan. Netflix is identified as the streaming service of choice, but its availability is apparently still in question. The word allegedly came from Porsche’s Director of Driver Experience Oliver Fritz during a recent media preview event for the electric supercar, though it was qualified with a statement that Porsche is working on it, but wants to make it safe."   https://www.motor1.com/news/366834/porsche-taycan-might-stream-movies/   PORSCHE WANTS TO DESTROY THE WORD "TURBO" From Jalopnik today talking about the Porsche Taycan: "You may have also heard that the first version to make it to market will be the higher-spec, faster model, which Porsche has been calling the Taycan Turbo. This is a terrible, terrible name for the car, because if there’s one thing you can absolutely say about the Taycan, it’s that the car has nothing even remotely like a turbo in it. You cannot have a “turbo” electric car because nothing about a turbo is compatible with how electric motors work. It’d be like if McDonalds started offering a McHDMI burger, suggesting that, somehow, that cheeseburger had an HDMI port on it, even though there is nothing inside a cheeseburger that would work in any way at all with an HDMI connection. Porsche calling the Taycan a “Turbo” is just as idiotic."   It makes about as much sense as a Toyota Corolla hybrid sign written in big letter which says "Lean green all electric machine".   https://jalopnik.com/porsche-wants-to-destroy-the-word-turbo-and-im-not-fu-1837517051   TOYOTA WILL DEPLOY 850 ELECTRIC VEHICLES AT THE OLYMPICS "Toyota is providing the official fleet for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and 90% of them will be electric. That’s 850 electric vehicles to be deployed next year — most of them new, including some weird ones." says electrek: "Toyota says that “the public roads surrounding the Toyota City Showcase “MEGAWEB” in the Tokyo Odaiba/Toyosu area are expected to be used for test rides/drives of vehicles with advanced driving technology” and the Concept-i will be one of the vehicles people are going to be able to try at the Olympics games."   https://electrek.co/2019/08/23/toyota-weird-electric-vehicles-olympics/   TESLA ‘SUPERBOTTLE’ PROVES THAT THE MODEL 3’S DISRUPTION LIES IN ITS VERTICAL INTEGRATION "During a recent interview with Tesla owner-enthusiast Sean Mitchell, Detroit veteran Sandy Munro of Munro and Associates mentioned that among the Model 3’s unique components, its “Superbottle” is one of the most innovative. Combining two pumps, one heat exchanger, and one coolant valve in one cleverly-designed bottle, the Model 3’s cooling system is arguably the most unique in the auto industry. " writes Simon at Teslarati: "The Chevy Bolt, for example, has three cooling systems: one for its battery pack, one for its cabin, and one for its electronics. This is not the case with the Model 3, as the fondly-named Superbottle handles the entire cooling system of the whole vehicle — battery pack, cabin, and electronics included. For Munro, the novel cooling system is the very definition of Tesla’s vertical integration. "   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-superbottle-disruption-video/   RESERVING ELECTRIC VAUXHALL CORSA-E COST ONLY £500 IN UK "Buyers can reserve the electric version of Vauxhall’s new Corsa supermini for just £500, the British brand has confirmed. Dubbed the Corsa-e, the new model is the first of the revamped Corsa line-up to break cover, not to mention the most high-tech. Under the bonnet is a 134 bhp electric motor that’s powered by a 50 kWh battery to provide a 0-62 mph time of 8.1 seconds and a range of 205 miles." says InsideEVs today: "Vauxhall is offering would-be customers the opportunity to reserve their vehicle for £500. The sum is fully refundable on purchase of the car, and the first 500 British customers to make their reservations will receive a free home charging kit on delivery. Full pricing and specification details won’t be announced until the car makes its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and production won’t begin until January 2020."   https://insideevs.com/news/366783/reserve-electric-corsa-e-vauxhall/amp/   NEW FAST-CHARGING NETWORK FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Australians who drive electric cars will soon find it easier to recharge, with the federal government ploughing $15 million into a network of ultra-fast charging stations on major highways." says the Sydney Morning Herald: "The Morrison government's Energy Minister Angus Taylor will announce the funding on Monday, as construction begins north of Brisbane on the first of 42 fast-charging stations to be built by start-up Evie over the next year at a total cost of $50 million. The charging network will make use of Tritium fast charge units, he said, manufactured by an Australian company with headquarters in Brisbane."   https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/new-fast-charging-network-for-electric-vehicles-20190825-p52klp.html   COMMUNITY The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. It’s been one year since the Trump White House slapped 30 percent tariffs on solar cells and modules imported into the US. What happened since? The solar industry said tariffs would destroy tens of thousands of jobs and set the market back years. Turns out, the market is a lot more resilient than presumed. We now have the jobs numbers and installation data for 2018 — and yes, the tariffs definitely hurt solar, but not nearly as much as expected. We’ll take stock of how tariffs shaped America’s solar market over the last year, both bad and good. Then, Shell continues its distributed-energy acquisition spree. The oil giant just scooped up German battery services company sonnen — one month after buying EV charging firm Greenlots in January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   KIA ENIRO UPDATE I am a Norwegian reservation holder, currently #5605 !! They had previously said (Bjørn Nyland has confirmed):- "Norway is allocated 2000 Kia E-Nero's for delivery during 2019. But this may change?" They stopped the reservation program when it reached 6000. I think Nov.2018 and have refunded all deposits made ( 7,777 NOK)   I got a text from Kia Norway on 16.Jan.2019:-   It states they will deliver 356 Cars by 23 Feb.2019. So for me at 5605, well when then, 2020 if I'm lucky?   Translated to English:- "Delivery of the first e-Niro will soon start. The first customers on the reservation list have now signed a contract, and the delivery of these cars starts at the end of January / February, and beyond in February. We are pleased to announce that we have managed to get a good allocation of e-Niro at the beginning of the year. Here are the next shipments we have an overview of with arrival Drammen: (From arrival it takes from 1-3 weeks until the cars are out at the dealer, depending on where in the country they are sent) January 29, 83 cars arrive. On February 9, 24 cars arrive. On February 23, 249 cars arrive In these shipments there are cars with a total of 9 exterior colors and 2 interior colors. This differs from the colors we have initially set up for "First Edition". During January, we will contact the next customers on the list, 50-100 at a time, for car allocation. They choose a car and sign a contract with their dealer. If color originally selected is not on this delivery, one will be able to choose a different color, or wait for the next shipment."     AUDI TO UNVEIL NEW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS IN GENEVA Audi announced that at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, the company will unveil new plug-in hybrid models. The plural form indicates that there will be at least two new PHEVs. Martin Sander, currently in charge of operations at the Marketing and Sales division of AUDI AG, said that the expansion into PHEVs will be substantial" reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "Audi BEV models: Audi e-tron (already in production, deliveries in early 2019), Audi e-tron Sportback (to debut in 2019), Audi e-tron GT concept (from late 2020), Audi A3-sized EV concept (to be unveiled soon), Audi SUV BEV based on MEB platform (from late 2020) (to be unveiled soon), 5 more SUVs"   https://insideevs.com/audi-new-plug-in-hybrids-geneva/   REPORT: AUDI E-TRON FACES BATTERY-RELATED DELAY IN EUROPE "Audi's e-tron SUV was scheduled to go on sale in Europe by now, but its rollout in Europe has been delayed to next month, according to a report today from Automotive News Europe. Back in October, Audi told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag that it was working on "improvements in the interests of the buyer." Sources then told Bild that it had to do with battery software." according to Eric at Green Car Reports: "The newspaper had reported a bottleneck in battery supplies as battery supplier LG Chem is seeking a 10-percent price hike for the car's 95-kilowatt-hour battery. Citing sources close to Audi and/or its suppliers, it anticipated the software and battery pricing issues could delay the car for months. Audi spokesman Mark Dahnke said in an emailed statement that the launch schedule in the U.S. remains in the second quarter (of 2019) "as we have been targeting from the beginning."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121399_audi-e-tron-faces-battery-related-delay-in-europe   HUBJECT AND GREENLOTS COLLABORATE TO BRING APP-FREE AND CARD-FREE CHARGING TO EV DRIVERS "Hubject is collaborating with Greenlots to deploy its ISO 15118 Plug&Charge technology (earlier post) in North America. Customers with new, Plug&Charge-enabled vehicles will no longer need to worry about using an app or card to pay for their charge."This achievement is the result of a partnership between Hubject and Greenlots, a US-based provider of EV charging and energy management software and solutions and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell New Energies."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/02/20190208-hubject.html   EVGO SWITCHES UP ITS DC FAST CHARGING PRICES: LOWER MONTHLY PAYMENTS BUT HIGHER PER MINUTE Seth Weintraub at Electrek brings us the next story "US fast charging network EVgo has again decided to switch up its charging prices. The DC fast charger network that operates in 34 states charges its users on two tiers: Pay-as-you-go and Membership. EVgo charges based on time rather than electricity transfer and as of next week, prices are about to change. This week’s pricing update, called the ‘2019 prices‘ seems to affect membership prices, upping the costs significantly, almost to non-member prices. EVgo however, lowers the membership fee to $8 from $10/month but now includes few free minutes (only 29 minutes of free charging per month from 52 in New York for instance)."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/08/evgo-switches-charging-prices/   TESLA SHOWCASES MODEL 3 AT ONE OF EUROPE’S BUSIEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS Tesla is making its Model 3 presence in Europe known with the latest display of its all-electric sedan in one of the world’s busiest airports for international passenger traffic." reports Teslarati today: "In an appeal to potential customers in the European region, Tesla proudly displayed its newest vehicle in Lounge 1 of the Schengen area of Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. A photo posted of the Model 3 in the airport showed the car covered from view by a cloth; however, according to observations noted by other users on the site, the cover was being removed periodically and concealing a red Model 3."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-europe-amsterdam-airport-display/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Annual Revenue was $21.5 billion Profit - $345 million non-GAAP No ZEV credits sold to speak of, could be saving them up as a buffer. $910 million free cash flow on the quarter. They have $3.7 billion in unrestricted cash. Elon mentioned several times about stock being on ships being his concern, and getting them with customers in Europe and China. Tesla growing at 60% a year, from 2 billion revenue 5 years ago to 21 billion revenue in 2018. 360-400k vehicles forecast to be sold in 2019. All Model 3's being made at Fremont are currently for Europe and China. Gigafactory 3 Model 3's complete vehicle production line, so that stamping, paint shop. 1GWH of storage installed in 2018. 100 powerpacks in 32 countries. Pickup on track to be unveiled this Summer. Eurpopean and China orders are strong and they're not trying. Leasing will come but not yet. As for $35k Model 3 the letter say: " A new manufacturing line made by Tesla Grohmann is further increasing production of Powerwall and Powerpack modules at Gigafactory 1."   TESLA MODEL 3 PRODUCTION TO START IN CHINA BY END OF YEAR "Tesla has said in its fourth quarter report that the local production of Model 3 in China should begin by the end of 2019" reports Mark at InsideEVs.com: "The Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai will produce (probably in 2020) some 3,000 Model 3 per week. Those will be only base versions of the Model 3, as the top versions (all-wheel drive and Performance) will be supplied to China from the U.S.. The rate of production of Model 3 in Fremont is to be 7,000 per week later in 2019, which together with 3,000 per month in China, should enable Tesla to crank 10,000 per week." And the Tesla letter said that was the plan by the end of this year. That's an annual worldwide rate of 500,000 Model 3s. I will add - there is nothing on that site apart from a fence.   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-production-china/   TESLA IS ADDRESSING ITS REPAIR SERVICE CHALLENGES "Tesla stated that it is currently operating 378 service centers around the world by the end of the fourth quarter, with 300 of the sites being located outside of CA. Augmenting this support system is a fleet of 411 mobile service vehicles." reports Simon Alvarez for Taslarati. Elon said: "“We’re also improving parts distribution. I think we made a strategic error in the past about not having service parts located at our distribution centers. We had them in parts distribution warehouses which basically meant it was impossible to have a fast turnaround on service on your car because the car would come in, then the parts would be requested (before) they come to the service center. Basically, for even for a very simple repair, it could take days. We’re going to move to stocking all common parts at the service centers, so it’s possible to get your car service in 20 or possibly 15 minutes. Lightning fast. It’s also gonna make sense for our service centers to do basic bodywork or essentially if all you need to do is replace a front or rear feature, it makes sense to pre-stock the front-rear feature in the common colors. So unless you have (an) unusual color, we can literally replace your feature in 15-20 minutes, and there’s none of this like weeks at a body shop stuff.”   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-repair-service-rangers-double-capacity-parts-distribution-2019/   TESLA TO BEGIN MODEL Y TOOLING THIS YEAR Staying with Teslarati with news about the Model Y: "Tooling for the vehicle will begin this year and pave the way for volume production expected in 2020. Despite prior comments from CEO Elon Musk hinting that the site of production of the company’s upcoming vehicle might be Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, Tesla indicates in its 2018 Full Year report that Gigafactory 1 in Sparks, Nevada will likely be the site for first Model Y volume production." "Since Model Y will use the lessons learned with Model 3 production at the start, Tesla predicts a smoother path to market for the vehicle. One of the variables in favor of that prediction is the fact that Model Y will share about 75% of the components of the Model 3, lowering CapEx for a new production line as compared to Model 3’s line in Fremont. The efficiency enabled by the similarities is further anticipated to quicken the speed of the production ramp."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-production-gigafactory-1-2020/   VW REVIVING THE CLASSIC BEACH BUGGY AS AN ELECTRIC CONCEPT VW is reviving the classic Californian 1960's Beach Buggy. Motor1.com has the details: "Volkswagen just dropped a pair of teaser photos for a new dune buggy concept, based not on the outgoing Beetle but the company’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform. Yes, the classic rear-engined beach buggy is now reimagined as an all-electric dune hopper, and though the teaser photos don’t reveal all the details, we can see that the core elements appear to be present." says Christopher Smith: "We do know that Volkswagen’s primary mission with this retro reboot isn’t so much about tapping into a nostalgic vibe, but showcasing the versatility of its MEB chassis. There’s certainly something to be said for the compact nature of an electric system – there’s no need to route exhaust systems, fuel lines, or make room for bulky driveline components that could change from vehicle to vehicle. "   https://www.motor1.com/news/303291/vw-reviving-classic-beach-buggy/   2019 KIA NIRO EV FIRST DRIVE: THE NEW AFFORDABLE LONG-RANGE LEADER InsideEVs got the chance to play in the Kia eNiro: "After a full day of driving the 2019 Kia Niro EV through California’s Monterey Bay region, the all-electric crossover’s real-world range appears to be about 250 miles. The Niro EV’s official E.P.A. range is 239 miles, but 260 miles was indicated on the dash as we left the hipster Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz." according to Bradley for InsideEVs: "Depending on the road’s incline and other factors, Level 3 regen can bring the car to a complete stop after a long coast. But for a useful, no-pedal stop – similar to the BMW i3 or the Chevy Bolt in L – you also need to pull and hold the left paddle. Kia’s Garrett Ono, manager of product strategy and regulatory compliance, called it a “hold to stop” function. The Niro EV uses a 200-horsepower motor mounted to the front axle. Given its extra size, the Niro EV is not as fast off the line as the Bolt or Kona. Even when punching the Niro EV’s accelerator, you are not tossed back in your seat. The launch starts modestly until it reaches about 15 miles per hour"   https://insideevs.com/2019-kia-niro-ev-first-drive/   EXTREME E SERIES UNVEILS EVENT FORMAT, 2021 LAUNCH DATE "The nature of the Extreme E electric off-road SUV racing series has been unveiled by co-founders Gil de Ferran and Alejandro Agag - and it is set to begin in January 2021." reports Alex for motorsport.com "The championship, which is operated in association with ABB FIA Formula E, hosted a launch event on the river Thames in central London, on board the Royal Mail Ship St Helena. XE will hold electric SUV racing events in five remote areas of the world – the Arctic, the Himalayas, the Sahara desert, the Amazon rainforest and islands in the Indian Ocean. Motorsport.com has previously reported that XE entrants will use the same spec-chassis base underneath bespoke silhouette SUV racing designs, with limited powertrain areas available for development. The event format will be a series of head-to-heads over stages approximately five miles long, with a round-robin group stage leading to a knockout tournament to decide the event winner. British explorer and environmentalist David de Rothschild will be XE’s chief explorer. An XE statement described the series as a “fully-funded venture”, which is already backed by founding partner Continental Tyres, and niobium supplier CBMM."   https://www.motorsport.com/offroad/news/extreme-e-format-launch-date/4331106/   SHELL ACQUIRES EV CHARGING COMPANY GREENLOTS Greenlots, a US-based leader in EV charging and energy management software and solutions, has signed an agreement to become a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell New Energies US LLC, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc. With this deal, Greenlots’ technology and team become the foundation for Shell’s continued expansion of electric mobility solutions in North America. Can you help me fight the fossils? Read more about Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 14th January 2019. And thank you to the latest member of the Patreon family, it’s DAVID BARKMAN joining up a new Producer.     TESLA REGISTERS HUGE BATCH OF 28K MODEL 3 VINS According to Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Tesla recently exhibited what could very well be the most encouraging sign of the Model 3 ramp to date. From Friday to Sunday, Tesla registered a mammoth batch of more than 28,000 Model 3 VIN registrations, over 20,000 of which were designated for international markets." "The new registrations were reported by Model 3 VIN tracking group @Model3VINs, which tracks Tesla’s filings for the electric sedan. This latest batch also complements the more than 14,800 Model 3 VINs that were registered in the week of January 6. That’s more than 42,000 Model 3 VINs filed during the first two weeks of the first quarter alone."   https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-10-percent-workforce-fired-bfr-starlink-launches/   ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT DETROIT’S 2019 AUTO SHOW "Last year, 361,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold in the United States, just 2 percent of car purchases, according to estimates by InsideEVs.com. Tesla, which has struggled with production and delivery problems, accounted for half of those sales." reports The New York Times today. And with the 2019 Detroit Auto Show starting today for trade, with public days later this week, expect a lot of talk about EVs. "Automakers are preparing to introduce dozens of fully electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles over the next three years, and Hyundai, Kia, Mini, Nissan and Audi will display electric models due in the United States this year. It is a gambit based on the idea that many mainstream car owners will rush to make the leap from gasoline. But to sell all those cars, the manufacturers have to attract a new class of customer."   https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/13/business/detroit-auto-show-electric-cars.html   FORD PROMISE A ‘BIG SURPRISE’ "Ford Motor is gearing up to launch new electric cars as soon as next year, CEO Jim Hackett told CNBC on Sunday. Ford has previously announced its plans to invest $11 billion in electric vehicles by 2022 and produce 40 hybrid and fully electric cars, in a plan to revive its slowing business. However, the company's chief told CNBC that drivers should be prepared for 'a big surprise' from Ford." He told CNBC: "We talked about a huge investment in electric vehicles. We have 16 models that are in design and development. We have a pretty big surprise coming next year."   https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/13/ford-ceo-says-a-big-surprise-coming-next-year-with-electric-vehicles.html   NISSAN IMS CONCEPT DEBUTS AT THE DETROIT MOTOR SHOW "Nissan has revealed the IMs concept at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. Designed as an all-electric “elevated sports sedan,” it blends luxury saloon packaging with crossover styling." says AutoExpress: "Powered by two electric motors, the all-wheel-drive IMs concept produces a claimed 476bhp and 800Nm of torque. The motors are fed by a 115kWh battery pack, which Nissan says will provide a range of 380 miles on a single charge. To maximise interior space, Nissan tucked its drivetrain components under the chassis, creating a completely flat cabin floor. The front two seats can also swivel to face the rear bench, due to the absent centre console."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/105684/nissan-ims-concept-debuts-at-the-detroit-motor-show   AUDI PB18 E-TRON LIMITED TO 50 UNITS? "As it’s often the case with concept cars, the Audi PB18 e-tron is expected to go make the jump to series production. But there's a catch that must be highlighted. According to Autoweek Netherlands, the four-ringed automaker is planning 50 examples of the breed." according to AutoEvolution: "For starters, Audi isn’t the type of automaker who limits production to 50 units, even if we’re talking about a wild-looking, all-electric supercar. It would make more sense to up the production run to 500 or 1,000 examples, especially from a financial standpoint. The PB18 e-tron neither has the skills to take on Tesla’s second-generation roadster despite the three-motor setup, 95-kWh battery, and fast-charging capability."   https://www.autoevolution.com/news/audi-pb18-e-tron-limited-to-50-units-131593.html   SEAMLESS EV CHARGING IS CATCHING ON IN NORTH AMERICA "Two of North America’s largest charging networks, Greenlots and ChargePoint, recently formed a roaming partnership that will enable charging across both networks. Beginning in mid-2019, customers will be able to charge on either the ChargePoint or Greenlots networks without the need to create separate accounts" says InsideEVs in an EVANNEX article today. Lin-Zhuang Khoo, Senior VP, Greenlots: "his once-fragmented industry is building momentum towards true driver interoperability thanks to adoption of standards like OCPI that are beneficial to drivers, automakers, grid operators and charging infrastructure providers. What’s particularly encouraging about this positive trend is that it is happening in advance of major policy changes or other external forces – a sign that the EV charging market is maturing in concert with surging customer demand for EVs."   https://insideevs.com/seamless-ev-charging-north-america/   SOLAR + STORAGE HALF THE COST OF GAS PEAKER PLANTS One of your must-read websites is CleanTechnica, and a new article from Steve Hanley today is less about EVs but more about how we power them. "S&P Global reports the cost of solar with battery backup dropped precipitously in 2018. In a few cases in the sunny Southwest region of the United States, several tenders for solar plus storage came in at under $30 per megawatt-hour last year. Stand alone prices for installed battery storage — based on a 20 megawatt-hour system with 4 hours of storage — dropped 40% from the previous year to $357 per kilowatt-hour and are expected to keep falling. Bloomberg New Energy Finance projects a further 52% reduction by 2030." "Some CleanTechnica readers have been wondering why Kia and Hyundai have such low production targets for their newest EV offerings. The clamor for battery cells to meet the energy storage demand may be part of the reason for those low numbers.”   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/13/solar-storage-half-the-cost-of-gas-peaker-plants-8minuteenergy/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
