Christopher Nolan's “The Odyssey” hit theaters a little over a week ago.The film earned an estimated $124 million on its opening weekend and, at the time of this recording, received a score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and 4.4 stars on Letterboxd.While Nolan's mastery of his craft and a well-loved cast have certainly done their part in making the film a success, the credit must still go where it is due—to the architect of the source material: Homer.Tradition says that Homer was a blind, rambling poet. However, most historians agree that it is unlikely that one man put the epic together. Instead, The Odyssey was likely built on hundreds of years of oral tradition—with each poet adding their brick to the masterful wall that is the tale of Odysseus. And today, through this new film, our century adds its own brick to the wall.And through the centuries of this poem's adaptation and evolution, the amalgam of worldviews the different poets brought to the story exposed the spiritual beliefs of an entire age.For readers coming from an Abrahamic faith background, the way deities are presented in the tale is both familiar and foreign. The power checks out—as does the relational element and the blessings. But the foolishness, the pettiness—the humanity of the gods—feels foreign and even blasphemous.So how does this new rendition, made by people living in a society dominated by Abrahamic faiths and secularism deal with the devout, but perplexingly hubristic character of Odysseus? Is faith treated thoughtfully and with respect? Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast!   Before we get into this month's adjacent title, we've got quite a bit of podcast business to get through.   Today is pretty much the final episode of what we'd call the second era of the show, well, aside from next month where we will be discussing the latest Woody Allen book - that will TRULY be the final part of the second era of the show.   The first era was the early years with Simon, when we were still figuring out the format, the editing, using the very ugly Microsoft paint looking artwork and, quite frankly, we were still figuring out what the podcast even actually was doing long term.   This second era has been the James Daniel Walsh years, where the show found a new rhythm and started the Woody Adjacent Project.   ...and now we're getting ready for the third and final act of the podcast.   From October we begin the Woody Allen RE-retrospective, where we'll be going back through every single Allen film or off cut odd special release ala non woody directed movie etc   We will be hitting you with fresh conversations, improved production and everything we've learned from doing this podcast for so many years.   Then, when that final retrospective is complete, that will bring this podcast itself to a fitting end.   The podcast feed will still be active but myself and james will likely be starting a new podcast about film and television (to be decided later)   We really want to make this last run of the show the best version the podcast it possibly can be.   As part of the new final era, we've got brand-new podcast artwork, a dedicated YouTube channel, a new email address and a number of other updates coming as we freshen everything up for the road ahead.   Today, we also explain why August is going to work a little differently moving forward.   August is always a hectic month for me personally, with family birthdays, holidays and a lot of podcast admin happening behind the scenes, so moving forward, August will essentially become our annual pre-recorded month.   There will still be an episode in August, but it may be a solo recording by me Don, something James and I have cobbled in advance, or a different type of episode that gives us the space to work on anything else woody related - at the very least it will be a Q&A episode / AMA type episode.. we'll figure it out later   Putting all that aside.. we also make a small request to our listeners.   James has been using the same microphone for around ten years, going all the way back to outside work he was doing on his manic expression animated movie,   Before we begin the final retrospective go around I would really love to upgrade his audio gear.   The microphone I've picked out for him is the Elgato Wave 3, which should give him a substantial improvement in sound quality and help us make this final run through on Woody's filmography sound as professional as possible.   This request is not aimed at our existing Patreon supporters, who already do a great deal for the podcast and have our genuine thanks. Synopsis The late Sam Neill plays John Trent, an insurance investigator tracking down the whereabouts of Sutter Cane a famous horror novelist who has gone missing right before the release of his new novel. Trent suspects that the whole thing is a publicity stunt for the novel's release, but as he searches for Kane, he finds the line between Kane's fictional world and reality start to fray and overlap in disturbing ways. Review John Carpenter goes full Lovecraftian, melding his trademark independent film sensibilities and impressive practical effects with cosmic horror. If you look at his Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB ratings, you will also see that this is his last major film with significant critical and audience praise. It marks the end of an era where scrappy 80s gore and body horror was supplanted by slicker high budget meta narratives. This movie ushered in the new era with the likes of Candyman, The New Nightmare, and Scream. standing between two eras, this definitely has more of an esthetic aligned with the scrappy indy vibe of Romero and Carpenters previous work. The idea takes center stage and isn't handled preciously. It presents itself as a cool thing and lets the audience take a little ride without delving deep into the psychological or taking itself too seriously. Kind of like a Stephen King novel actually. I picked this one because of the passing of Sam Neill and he does a great job here being the everyman descending into, you guessed it, madness. We also get Happy Gilmore's grandma being freaky af, Vigo the Carpathian, and a very young Hayden Christiansen. Like I said before, it's a fun ride that doesn't take itself too seriously. My only criticism is that it does rely on some repetitive cinematic moves such as jump scares and arbitrary time loops. But it's all to service the films uneasy vibe and give impact to the singular moments of cosmic horror. Score 7/10

There are spoilers ahead! For many films I'm afraid. I would especially avoid the episode until you have watched Ex-Machina (which you really really should immediately it really is phenomenal) as Jes does talk directly about the ending between 53:23 till 53:46. I have made a list of the films and books mentioned below. This is another detour episode and perhaps you're thinking I'm trying to avoid the very big task of recording 2001: A Space Odyssey content. And perhaps you're right. But I hope you enjoy this discussion. If you try to think of a futuristic city your mind may be drawn towards a real place but it could just as easily be drawn towards the great science fiction films that render our future on our screens. Films like Blade Runner, Minority Report, Fifth Element and (the granddaddy) Metropolis have all shown us what human futures could look like. Sometimes these visions are intimidating, terrifying or occausionally aspirational. These images in turn can affect and inform own understanding of what an unwritten future should be like. I have two wonderful guests to talk through the somewhat symbiotic relationship of science fiction and architecture Amy Brookes is an architect and an Associate Professor at the University of Reading. She has written extensively about architecture and one of her special interests is Architecture in science fiction literature and film. Jes Deaver is an award-winning architect as well as a filmmaker and writer. Everybody's talking about The Odyssey — Christopher Nolan's sweeping epic starring Matt Damon as Odysseus — and Adam Holtz from Plugged In joins Brian From to give the full breakdown. The film generated significant pre-release controversy over casting choices including a Black actress as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as a warrior, plus concerns about a more progressive interpretation of Homer's source material. But the early numbers tell a different story: 96% from critics and 97% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Adam notes something worth acknowledging: the movie's version of Odysseus is actually more redemptive than the original — a faithful family man trying to get home to his wife and son after 20 years, not the arrogant womanizer of Homer's text. The R rating is the real curveball: the violence is intense but not gory, and Adam traces the rating almost entirely to three F-words — one over the PG-13 threshold — in what he reads as a very deliberate creative decision. His bottom line: know your family's convictions, because this R-rated film is less problematic than a lot of movies that carry that same rating. We open with the biggest election integrity news in years — the House passed the SAVE Act as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, 217 to 209, with Speaker Mike Johnson delivering exactly what he promised us two weeks ago when he sat down with American Ground Radio. We explain what the SAVE Act actually does — and what it doesn't. It doesn't change who is eligible to vote. It doesn't alter the Constitution. It simply requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. We point out that we verify identity to board a plane, open a bank account, and buy a beer — and that the only people who benefit from not verifying citizenship at voter registration are people who aren't citizens. We also note that Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin's claim that no Democrat will ever win again if the SAVE Act passes raises an obvious question about how many non-citizens have been voting for her party. The bill now goes to the Senate, where John Thune needs to do his job — or be voted out at the first opportunity. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch testified before the Senate in his confirmation hearing — telling senators that his client is not the president but the American people, while more than 1,200 former DOJ employees signed a letter opposing his confirmation, which may be the best endorsement he could have received. Then the House passed a bill to make daylight saving time permanent year-round — meaning darker mornings in winter and lighter evenings, with states currently on permanent standard time allowed to stay there. And Senate Democrats boycotted a hearing on government fraud, with only one Democrat showing up before leaving after his opening statement — even as investigative journalists Nick Shirley, James O'Keefe, and Dylan Heder-Gaudette presented documented findings on billions in fraudulent benefits claims. As Nick Shirley said, no dollar says Republican or Democrat on it. We also tackle the question of whether a New Hampshire state representative can drive 102 miles per hour on her way to the legislature and claim constitutional immunity from arrest under a provision dating back to the era of kings arresting parliamentarians on their way to inconvenient votes. We acknowledge the historical purpose of the law. We reject the application of it to someone who simply didn't plan her schedule well enough. Rules for thee but not for me is not a constitutional principle — and if you don't care about the safety of the people on the road, why would you care about the safety of the people you represent? Our American Mama Teri Netterville weighs in on the Emmy nominations — and the conversation becomes a broader indictment of an awards system that has completely lost touch with what Americans are actually watching. Greg Gutfeld hosts the number one late night show in the country. Not nominated. Taylor Sheridan has produced Yellowstone, Landman, 1923, and The Madison — all massive hits with critics and audiences alike. Not nominated. Meghan Markle's show As Ever received a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, was called the sweet spot between irrelevant and intolerable by the Times of London, and was canceled. Emmy nominated. The awards don't reflect excellence anymore. They reflect ideology. In our Digging Deep segment, U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll announced that the Army has already met its 2026 recruiting goals — with 61,500 new recruits — eight and a half months before the year ends. Compare that to 2022, when the military missed its goals by 25%, and 2023, when it missed by 10%. Nothing changed except the administration and with it the clarity of purpose. We play Simon Sinek's story about a Marine recruiter who told a high school auditorium full of teenagers that not a single one of them was good enough to be a Marine — and walked out with the longest line of any recruiter in the room. People don't want to be told service is easy. They want to be challenged to be worthy of it. Trump and Hegseth figured that out. The numbers prove it. We also cover France's assisted suicide legislation — which has passed the lower house and would allow physicians and nurses to end the lives of patients who cannot do so themselves. The Catholic Church in France has threatened excommunication for any legislator who votes for it, and Pope Francis personally asked Macron not to sign it. We make the pro-life case plainly — compassion means walking with those who suffer, not eliminating the one who is suffering. A society's worth is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable, not by how conveniently it removes them. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has now threatened to shut down all Middle Eastern oil exports if Iran cannot export its own — using energy as a weapon exactly as both Iran and Iraq did during the 1980s war. We note that this is exactly why the Iraq oil pipeline deal through Turkey matters, why the Strait of Hormuz matters, and why at some point the president may have to say what needs to be said about ground troops. For our Bright Spot, a Spanish conservation group called El Burrito Feliz — the Happy Little Donkey — has deployed 18 donkeys around Doñana National Park on Spain's Atlantic coast, an area with the same fire-prone Mediterranean climate as Southern California. Since the donkeys were introduced, there has not been a single wildfire in the park in nine years. The donkeys eat the dry scrub and tall grasses that fuel fires, reach terrain that vehicles cannot, and cost a fraction of what California spends on fire suppression after the fact. We suggest California try it. What have they got to lose? And we close with Jenny Stepien, who walked down the aisle on her wedding day wishing her father could be there. Her father Michael had passed away ten years earlier — but he was an organ donor, and his heart had saved the life of a man named Tom Thomas, who became Jenny's pen pal out of gratitude.
