Brent Verner shares his journey from being one of the first eight Army Ranger Combat Assault Dog handlers to working with Naval Special Warfare, bringing decades of operational experience from Iraq and Afghanistan. Brent discusses his first dog Rudy—a "landshark" who licked trees in training but became a combat-proven asset—and the evolution from contract handlers to Ranger-qualified K9 operators. The conversation explores critical lessons learned in combat: why early training didn't translate to operational success, how dogs perform differently under real-world pressure, and the importance of calculated training with specific benchmarks versus "checkbox" mentality. Brent emphasizes that special operations training is deliberately structured with measurable tasks, while many law enforcement programs settle for general training that doesn't build fluency.Key Topics:Combat Assault Dog program origins and selectionReal combat deployments: what worked, what didn'tDogs getting injured and handler decision-makingTransitioning from military to law enforcement mindsetWhy "busy" agencies (like LAPD) create better handlers fasterThe danger of checkbox training vs. calculated objectivesFirst aid and tactical care for working dogsFinding credible mentors who've "no-shit done it"Essential for law enforcement K9 handlers, security operators, and military working dog communities looking to elevate training standards beyond basic competency.Brent Verner Background: Former U.S. Army Ranger, one of first eight Combat Assault Dog handlers, transitioned to Naval Special Warfare, multiple combat deployments (Iraq/Afghanistan), now trains law enforcement and security K9 teams in Pennsylvania.
This week, veteran fish taxidermist Jimmy Lawrence uses plumber's foam to silence morbid K9 requests, we catch massive bluegills where people are still proud to be your neighbor, explain why Teddy Ruxpin eyes are a bad choice for your trophy walleye mount, and pack a record snakehead up for deployment to Gloryland.
On this episode of Bar Cart Friday presented by Keg N Bottle, Big Rich, TD and Fletch welcome a special guest into the studio — Jose Pila, founder of Warrior Dog Spirit. Jose is a U.S. Army veteran who created the brand to honor the courage and loyalty of military working dogs and their handlers. Every bottle tells the story of heroic service dogs and helps support initiatives that connect veterans with service animals and ensure retired K9s find loving homes. The guys crack open the whiskey, talk about Jose's journey from Army service to entrepreneurship, and learn how Warrior Dog Spirit is turning great whiskey into a mission-driven movement supporting veterans and canine heroes.
Curious at all why the Seahawks are in no hurry to lock-in a replacement for K9? Are you also unsure of how the NFL Compensatory Pick system works? Perfect. Here's a preschooler to explain it to you.
Send a textAs promised, Brian's first episode covered his younger, more formative years as a new Deputy and now we're heading into his time as a K9 handler. His four-legged partners were all studly police dogs, so I'm glad we're covering their heroics this week. Many times, K9 Officers send their partners into very dangerous situations to reduce the likelihood of danger to the cops. It doesn't make it any less stressful if the dog is hurt or worse. Larry Summerfield's name was dropped, listen for the story where their two dogs tag teamed a really bad actor who needed some K9 TLC...There's a lot of pics of Brian's K9s, check them out on Facebook or Instagram...Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Free agency opened with a bittersweet start for our Seattle Seahawks as Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker signed with the Chiefs on a record-setting deal for a running back. All the best options for replacing K9 were gone by the end of the first day. So are we going to be looking toward the draft? Other departures included Boye Mafe landing with the Bengals and Coby Bryant heading to the Bears. Before discussing who is returning, we talk about how wide receiver contracts around the NFL are sparking sticker shock. Seattle's biggest wins come in-house: Rashid Shaheed re-signs on a three-year deal and, most notably, Josh Jobe returns on a contract that appears to be a steal for the production he provides. Between cornerback Riq Woolen and swing tackle Josh Jones, those participating in chat had a clear preference of who they'd like to see prioritized in the coming days. In this episode of Crime Bit, we examine the disappearance of 6-year-old Lily Sullivan and her 4-year-old brother Jack Sullivan from their rural home in Pictou County, Nova Scotia on May 2, 2025. With a remote property, no cell service, and a narrow window between backyard play and silence, family and neighbors raise the alarm as RCMP launch an urgent search using K9s, drones, and ground teams to lock down the first hours. The case matters because remote terrain can erase clues fast, leaving investigators dependent on timelines, search coverage, and what can be verified early. We break down the confirmed facts, the first leads, and the questions that shaped the initial response.
George Lyall & Mark Zeitler join the show to discuss the Karl Zeitler Memorial Hunt & the many ways that bird dogs bring people together to help others. Rob Kelly is the founder of ALWAYS READY™ and a former New Hampshire police officer, Department of Defense contractor, K9 instructor/handler, and lifelong public servant. Built on a foundation of discipline, mindset, and action, ALWAYS READY™ was born from Rob’s personal transformation and his commitment to helping others take ownership of their lives. In December 2023, Rob hit a breaking point—overweight, burned out, and stuck in self-made excuses. Instead of chasing motivation, he chose discipline. That shift—from “I should” to “I must”—sparked a complete transformation and became the core philosophy behind ALWAYS READY™. Today, Rob’s mission is simple but uncompromising: help people uncover their “why,” eliminate excuses, and show up stronger in body, mind, and purpose. ALWAYS READY™ is more than a brand—it’s a movement for anyone willing to build real readiness for life’s challenges, whether in service, work, family, or personal growth. Being ALWAYS READY™ means cultivating a resilient body, a disciplined mind, and a heart grounded in service—ready to face whatever comes next.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Canine integration into SWAT operations has evolved significantly, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Special Enforcement Bureau leading the charge since the 1990s. In this episode, Jon sits down with John Montenegro and Steve Williams from LASD-SEB to examine their pioneering approach to K9/SWAT integration, where canines and operators function as a single team with complementary capabilities. Montenegro and Williams share tactical insights from decades of experience, debrief actual cases demonstrating effective canine deployment, and discuss lessons learned in building successful integration programs. Essential listening for tactical teams considering or refining their K9 integration strategies.

NFL free agency is about to heat up and our Seattle Seahawks have some big looming decisions. Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker is one of those big decisions. We discuss four reasons it makes sense in this offseason to pay K9 and keep him in Seattle. But, what's the right contract value? Are there other free agents who might be a surprising bargain? Just how much will our 2022 second-round pick get on the open market? Lastly, would we feel comfortable spending another 2nd round pick on a RB in the draft? Support the show Get in the Flock! Veteran Italian officer Andrea Boggiatto, who now serves in Colorado pulls back the curtain on how culture, tools, and law shape policing on both sides of the Atlantic. From 400‑person academy classes and national public order units to mid-sized U.S. agencies built on names and faces, he walks us through the structural DNA that drives training, tactics, and trust. We get specific about the moments that decide outcomes: radio traffic under stress, the tempo of dialogue, and the rungs between words and force. In Italy, many officers carry a baton and a sidearm but lack tasers, OC spray, and even consistent access to ballistic vests. That narrowed toolkit pushes decisions toward sharper edges. Contrast that with American emphasis on layered force options and “act like you've been there” comms—habits that slow the clock when seconds matter. He admits he had to rewire instinct, shifting from “one, two, ten” to a steadier climb where patience is a trained skill, not just a personality trait. The legal terrain might be the starkest divide. He unpacks a Milan shooting involving a realistic replica and the intense scrutiny that followed, then lays out why Italian civilians face steep barriers to gun ownership and self-defense. Even victims who protect their families can be pulled into years of litigation. It's a sobering counterpoint to the U.S. “home as castle” mindset and a reminder that legitimacy rests as much on courts as on streets. Through it all runs a simple idea: the badge is an amplifier. Good character, sound training, and clear policy make better outcomes; weak links get louder, faster. If you care about practical reform—recruiting for temperament, building scenario-based judgment, tightening radio discipline, and giving officers lawful, effective options between baton and bullet—this conversation offers grounded, field-tested insight. Listen, share with a friend who has strong opinions about European vs. American policing, and leave a review with the one change you'd export across the Atlantic.send us a message! twocopsonedonut@yahoo.comPeregrine.io: Turn your worst detectives into Sherlock Holmes, head to Peregrine.io tell them Two Cops One Donut sent you or direct message me and I'll get you directly connected and skip the salesmen.Support the showPlease see our Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoCopsOneDonut Join our Discord!! https://discord.gg/BdjeTEAc *Send us a message! twocopsonedonut@yahoo.com

In 1982, Ed Frawley started Leerburg Enterprises. At that time he had been filming dog training videos for 4 years. Now 78, Ed retired from Leerburg at the end of January 2026 with a goal of spending more time with his family and to do a lot of fishing. Ed sold Leerburg to 2 friends who are both retired K9 handlers and instructors - Ian O'Connell and David Littlefield. Ian and Dave have great plans for Leerburg. They are keeping every employee and the business will stay in Menomonie, WI. Leerburg has been your trusted resource since 1982. For over 42 years, this company was built on one thing — a genuine love for dogs and the people who train them. Under new ownership, that doesn't change. Our mission, our products, and our dedication to you remain exactly the same. We're honored to continue serving you.

Derek Ramirez, the first ESD (Electronic Storage Device) K9 handler in his large Southern California agency, breaks down why electronic detection is the most challenging discipline in K9 work. Despite working in a major metro area with high demand, Derek's biggest hurdle wasn't finding work—it was educating decision-makers about what ESD dogs can do.Unlike narcotics or explosives with consistent target odors, electronic devices present massive challenges: thousands of manufacturers, constantly evolving technology, and micro-level odor signatures from SD cards and circuit components. Derek explains why handlers must become experts at reading subtle behavioral changes, why "interest" often matters more than full alerts, and how missing a hidden device can mean lost evidence in child exploitation cases.Key Topics:Why the nonprofit model creates handler limitationsESD vs. narcotics detection: fundamental differencesGeneralization training across device types and manufacturersReading dogs in low-odor scenariosWhy double-blind testing is essential for ESD teamsSearch methodology: how hiding spots affect successBuilding an ESD program from 5 to 16 dogsEssential for anyone considering ESD capabilities for event security, corporate environments, or law enforcement applications where electronic device detection matters.Derek Ramirez Background: First ESD K9 handler in major SoCal agency, built program from ground up, now manages growing unit of 16 dogs, works both ESD and narcotics detection.________________________________________

Dogs are fantastic. They are a strong and spirited companion, and a total force multiplier in the field, whether that's Law Enforcement or Military applications. To dive into this, I finally am able to sit down with my friend Tommy Marchitto and ask many of the questions I've had about working with dogs in tactical applications. Tommy is a Law Enforcement veteran of 13 years, spending a large portion of that working SWAT, and as a K9 handler. Having great experiences with a working dog earlier in life led to a career path partnering him with "Otto", his dog. We dig into all of the training that goes into making these four legged beasts into the partners they are, and spend plenty of time getting into how they're able to be use to solve problems, as well as how to take care of them so they have good productive careers of their own, in ways that they're able to be effective and successful. This is a discussion I've been looking forward to for a long time, and one I think you'll all really enjoy!Visit our sponsors! Our Patreon - www.patreon.com/prepared_mindset_podCustom Night Vision - www.customnightvision.com
#dickinsonpdnd #offthecuff Oғғ ᴛʜᴇ Cᴜғғ Pᴏᴅᴄᴀsᴛ | Eᴘɪsᴏᴅᴇ #27"K9 Convo" - OFC Dane HaugenA year that felt “quieter” turned out to be the second-busiest in our department's history—and that's just the first surprise. We break down what the numbers really say: why call volume climbed as staffing improved, how proactive patrols nudged crashes down and warrants up, and the single most encouraging stat of the year—a sharp drop in domestic violence calls compared to the recent average. Not everything trended well, though. We dig into the rise in resisting and preventing arrest, the risks in those split-second moments, and why our mantra is comply now, contest later. We also open the hood on how we're getting better at the unglamorous work that wins cases. Report writing became a 2026 priority, with Draft One—Axon's closed system that drafts from body-cam transcripts—helping officers save time while improving accuracy. Pair that with direct feedback from prosecutors and we're already seeing cleaner narratives and fewer avoidable delays. Wellness got teeth this year, too. We set three sturdy legs—mental health check-ins, tighter cardiac screenings, and a department-backed financial literacy course with Ramsey Solution's "Financial Peace University"—so officers can make better decisions and build stronger lives at home. Then there's the story everyone's been asking about: Officer Dane and K9 Frida. From jail corrections to rookie cop to field training officer, Dane leaned into discomfort until growth became a habit. His leap to K9 handler brought a Slovakian Malinois with endless drive and zero English into a 14-week training gauntlet. Together they learned the real craft of detection: reading breath changes, tail cadence, and head snaps; understanding residual odor; and certifying on fentanyl, meth, cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy. Frida works hard on the street and sits calm with kids at community events—the rare balance we need.If you value candid insights into policing that go beyond headlines—data that surprises, systems that improve, and a handler who lets you see the messy middle—this one's for you. Hank Wong, veteran law enforcement K9 handler turned DHS contractor, reveals shocking findings from government READY events that test bomb dog teams nationwide: NO team passes odor recognition tests 100% correctly on first attempt. The culprit? Over-reliance on single training kits and lack of exposure to varied manufacturers, packaging, and storage methods.Cameron and Hank break down the critical difference between discrimination (target vs. non-target) and generalization (recognizing target across variations), exposing how most handlers excel at one while failing the other. They discuss why dogs alert to "their version" of explosives but miss real-world threats, how training culture creates false confidence, and what event security teams must do differently.Key Topics:Why training on one kit creates operational gapsThe "chaos factor" science can't measureAction-on-find procedures for security vs. law enforcementHow to read your dog in low-odor scenariosWhy double-blind testing is essentialDiscrimination vs. generalization trainingEssential listening for event security K9 teams, handlers, and anyone responsible for explosive detection programs.Hank Wong Background: 20+ year LE K9 handler (Orlando area), worked dogs Recon, Gunner, Smash, and Keno. Send us a textEver pulled a 12 that turned into 14 because relief never came? We open the curtain on Air Force Security Forces and talk frankly about what keeps people in the beret—and what drives them out. From the missile field to the flight line to the range, we map the real forces that shape careers: schedules that never sleep, recalls that erase off-duty life, and the constant whiplash between boredom and chaos that only cops understand. We dig into the culture clashes that define the unit from the inside. Flight carries the grind—gates, patrols, reports, QC—while back office runs calendars, awards, and admin. That gap can warp incentives, sending strong patrolmen chasing stable hours instead of operational growth. Then there are the prestige sections: K9's unique mission with its own skill demands, Raven's tight community and travel perks that draw both admiration and side-eye, and CADM's critical training role that can feel insulated from flight. Each path offers real value and real tradeoffs, including promotion ceilings if you stay too long in a niche without deliberate rotation.Leadership is the hinge. The best leaders enforce standards, build fair schedules, and make sure recognition matches output. The worst pick the hardest option by default and forget the admin that makes careers—bullets, awards, and time for development. We share firsthand wins and misses, including the higher standard placed on defenders after off-duty mistakes and how that shapes trust. Still, the Defender identity forges resilient people; many of the Air Force's strongest first sergeants, group chiefs, and command chiefs grew up on flight. If you've ever asked whether you'd recommend SF to someone today, this conversation gives you the honest calculus: what you gain in discipline, composure, and leadership, and what it costs in time, predictability, and patience. If this resonated, tap follow, share it with a Defender, and drop a comment with the one change that would keep more cops in uniform.

The flock weighs in on what they expect from K9 with Zach Charbonnet sidelined for the rest of the season.
