Send us a textEver pulled a 12 that turned into 14 because relief never came? We open the curtain on Air Force Security Forces and talk frankly about what keeps people in the beret—and what drives them out. From the missile field to the flight line to the range, we map the real forces that shape careers: schedules that never sleep, recalls that erase off-duty life, and the constant whiplash between boredom and chaos that only cops understand. We dig into the culture clashes that define the unit from the inside. Flight carries the grind—gates, patrols, reports, QC—while back office runs calendars, awards, and admin. That gap can warp incentives, sending strong patrolmen chasing stable hours instead of operational growth. Then there are the prestige sections: K9's unique mission with its own skill demands, Raven's tight community and travel perks that draw both admiration and side-eye, and CADM's critical training role that can feel insulated from flight. Each path offers real value and real tradeoffs, including promotion ceilings if you stay too long in a niche without deliberate rotation.Leadership is the hinge. The best leaders enforce standards, build fair schedules, and make sure recognition matches output. The worst pick the hardest option by default and forget the admin that makes careers—bullets, awards, and time for development. We share firsthand wins and misses, including the higher standard placed on defenders after off-duty mistakes and how that shapes trust. Still, the Defender identity forges resilient people; many of the Air Force's strongest first sergeants, group chiefs, and command chiefs grew up on flight. If you've ever asked whether you'd recommend SF to someone today, this conversation gives you the honest calculus: what you gain in discipline, composure, and leadership, and what it costs in time, predictability, and patience. If this resonated, tap follow, share it with a Defender, and drop a comment with the one change that would keep more cops in uniform.

We gather our podcast regulars for a look at the past year on the show with our 2025 Disaster Podcast year in review. Dr. Joe Holley joined co-hosts Sam Bradley and Jamie Davis for this episode. Kyle Nelson, Becky DePodwin, and Dan DePodwin sent in their top episode picks by email. Joe Holley kicks off the look back at last year with a vote for the clinical topics, especially the recent 5-episode run on head-up CPR during sudden cardiac arrest. We assembled a special page for the head up CPR topic with all 5 episodes listed. Joe also discussed the importance of understanding how research works and not to get caught up in a single social media post on a novel subject without really understanding the context amidst other research. His final choice was the look at K9 and USAR dog training with Kimberly Holley. Kimberly has extensive training alongside her two trained USAR dogs and the third dog she has in training. Kyle talked about the episode with the Combat Midwife, Jessica Arno. This was an in-depth look at maternal and pediatric disaster care. In addition, Stump Dan the weatherman was another favorite episode as host Sam Bradley used the internet to come up with some novel weather terms and try to stump our own Dan DePodwin. These episodes are an annual favorite as Dan has an amazing understanding of weather, especially winter weather. Investigating airline disasters with Edward Colson of Ready Northwest was one of Becky DePodwin’s favorites as we delved into aviation industry disaster planning. She also put in her vote for the Stump the weatherman episode linked above. Jamie added the annual look at the Winter X-Games in Aspen. Our own Kyle Nelson worked as Planning Section Chief for the incident management team before and during the event this past year and shared some of the challenges they faced making such an event as safe as possible. Police Officer Arrested and Convicted, Sent to Prison, Was It Fair?. The Case of Stephanie Mohr. Was a police officer unfairly prosecuted and sent to prison by the Department of Justice? That question sits at the center of a Special Episode available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. Former Prince George's County, Maryland police officer and K9 handler Stephanie Mohr is telling her story, one that spans nearly three decades, from a routine call for backup outside Washington, D.C., to a federal conviction, a 10-year prison sentence, and ultimately a Presidential Pardon. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. “This was never just about one incident,” Mohr says. “It became about making an example of me.” A Routine Call That Changed Everything In 1995, Mohr was a relatively new K9 handler when she responded to a suspected burglary in Takoma Park, Maryland. At the time, the area was experiencing a series of break-ins. Two suspects were discovered on the roof of a building, and during the arrest, Mohr's police dog bit one of the men as he attempted to flee. Police Officer Arrested and Convicted, Sent to Prison, Was It Fair? Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . What followed was anything but routine. Years later, Mohr was charged and ultimately convicted in 2001 of a federal civil rights violation, becoming a police officer arrested and convicted, sent to prison for actions she maintains were lawful and consistent with her training. “I did what I was trained to do,” Mohr explains. “I never imagined it would cost me my career and a decade of my life.” An Extraordinary Prosecution According to Mohr and her supporters, the D.O.J. pursued her case with unusual intensity. After an initial trial, prosecutors sought a retrial and even brought a witness, an illegal immigrant, back into the United States from another country to testify against her. Police Officer Arrested and Convicted, Sent to Prison, Was It Fair? Look for The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. “Who does that?” Mohr asks. “It felt like they were determined to secure a conviction at any cost.” During the second trial, federal prosecutors introduced testimony portraying Mohr as a problematic officer with a pattern of targeting minorities, claims she has consistently denied. “That narrative was devastating,” she says. “It wasn't true, but it stuck.” The result was a 10-year federal prison sentence, which Mohr served before being released in 2011. A 19-Year Fight for Justice Mohr's case eventually caught the attention of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund (LELDF). After reviewing the facts, the organization committed to what would become a 19-year battle to clear her name. Police Officer Arrested and Convicted, Sent to Prison, Was It Fair? Special Episode. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and other podcast platforms. “Stephanie wasn't guilty of anything,” the LELDF later stated. “Her case represented a dangerous precedent for law enforcement officers nationwide.” Mohr became the first police officer supported by the LELDF to ultimately receive a presidential pardon. In December 2020, President Donald J. Trump granted Mohr a full and unconditional pardon, bringing long-awaited closure to a case that had followed her for 25 years. “For me, the pardon wasn't about politics,” Mohr says. “It was about finally being able to say: I was telling the truth.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Life After Prison and After the Pardon Following her release, Mohr rebuilt her life quietly. She worked as a Property Standards Inspector and later a Construction Standards Inspector for Prince George's County before moving on to a similar role with St. Mary's County government. Police Officer Arrested and Convicted, Sent to Prison, Was It Fair? “My dogs saved me as much as I saved them,” she says with a smile. You Be the Judge The story of Stephanie Mohr raises difficult questions about accountability, prosecutorial power, and whether justice was truly served. The special episode can be found on The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and across most podcast platforms where listeners will find authentic law enforcement stories. Was this a fair conviction, or did the D.O.J. go out of its way to make an example of a police officer? “That's not for me to decide anymore,” Mohr says. “I've lived with the consequences. Now I just want people to hear the full story.” Supporting First Responders This Special Episode is also part of a broader mission focused on saving and rebuilding the lives of First Responders. Stephanie Mohr's story is more than a headline, it's a cautionary tale, a fight for redemption, and a reminder that justice is not always as simple as a verdict. Be sure to check out our website . In this episode, we explore the 1981 television pilot K-9 and Company, a unique and historic entry in the Doctor Who universe. Produced as a proposed Doctor Who spin-off, K-9 and Company stars the legendary Elisabeth Sladen as investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith alongside the robotic dog K9, voiced by John Leeson. While both were iconic former companions of the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who, they had never appeared together on screen until the K-9 and Company pilot episode, titled A Girl's Best Friend. Broadcast on BBC1 as a Doctor Who related Christmas special on 28 December 1981, K-9 and Company remains a vital piece of the Doctor Who franchise history despite not being commissioned for a full series. The existence of K-9 and Company was largely due to Doctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner, who wanted to bring Elisabeth Sladen back to the Doctor Who family. His initial 1980 plan for the actress would have seen Sarah Jane Smith travel in the TARDIS during the Doctor Who transition from Tom Baker to Peter Davison. However, Sladen wanted a role that evolved beyond her previous Doctor Who narrative. Simultaneously, the Doctor Who production team was struggling with the logistics of K9. While K9 was a massive hit with Doctor Who viewers, the prop was technically awkward and made the Doctor Who heroes too capable. The solution was K-9 and Company, a child-orientated Doctor Who spin-off where Sarah Jane Smith would be the central heroic lead. Before K-9 and Company, Elisabeth Clara Heath Sladen built a career in theatre and television, appearing in Z-Cars and Doomwatch. Her work on Z-Cars led directly to her casting in Doctor Who. Interestingly, the Doctor Who role of the new companion for The Time Warrior was originally cast with April Walker. However, Doctor Who lead Jon Pertwee felt the chemistry was wrong, leading to Sladen being cast as the definitive Sarah Jane Smith. She played the role in Doctor Who from 1973 to 1976, eventually returning for the K-9 and Company pilot. Her Doctor Who legacy continued in 2006 with David Tennant and the successful Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Following her death in 2011, Doctor Who aired a tribute during The Impossible Astronaut, proving her status as a Doctor Who icon. The voice behind the metal dog in K-9 and Company, John Leeson, first voiced K9 in the 1977 Doctor Who serial The Invisible Enemy. While Tom Baker had a difficult relationship with the K9 prop, he worked well with Leeson. Leeson briefly left Doctor Who to avoid being typecast but returned for K-9 and Company and later the Doctor Who anniversary special The Five Doctors. The K-9 and Company pilot also featured Colin Jeavons, known for his work in The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the Doctor Who serial The Underwater Menace, and Mary Wimbush, a stalwart of The Archers. Written by Terence Dudley, a writer and director for Doctor Who stories like Meglos, the K-9 and Company pilot stands as a fascinating "what if" in the wider Doctor Who mythology.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. In this episode, Alex shares how he went from a regular kid to a repeat federal inmate, what federal prison was really like, and how he eventually found his purpose and truly turned his life around. _____________________________________________ #TrueCrime #PrisonStories #FederalPrison #BankRobbery #LifeAfterPrison #CrimeStory #RedemptionStory #LockedInWithIanBick _____________________________________________ Thank you to K9S.ORG for sponsoring this episode: Donate anytime at https://k9s.org/ Connect with Alex Harper: https://www.instagram.com/votealexharper/?hl=en Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Robbing Banks at 16 – How It All Started 01:35 First Arrest, Probation & Learning the System 04:22 Life After Prison: Supervision, Temptation & Pressure 06:00 Family, Childhood & Where Things Went Wrong 09:00 Early Gambling Addiction & Sports Betting Obsession 13:25 High School Double Life & First Bank Robbery 15:53 Escalation: More Robberies & How He Avoided Getting Caught 21:22 Bank Robbery Tactics, Mistakes & Hard Lessons Learned 25:54 College Life, Personality & Living Two Lives 29:44 Law School Dreams vs. Gambling Addiction 35:23 Getting Caught: The Moment Everything Fell Apart 41:31 First Time in Prison: Survival, Hustling & Reality Check 53:54 Running Gambling Operations Behind Bars 01:03:12 Released From Prison… Then Slipping Back 01:13:20 Second Sentence & Destroying Family Relationships 01:27:00 Depression, Accountability & Choosing Change 01:37:20 Life After Prison: Recidivism, Struggles & Reality 01:55:24 Finding Purpose, Giving Back & Redefining Success 02:08:00 Why the System Makes It Hard to Stay Free (Final Thoughts) Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textOne thing I must say about Brian and every guest who has graced me with their time over the years is...I've never once had to ask them to drop any pretense and be their authentic selves and that is what seems to catch my listener's interest and draw them in. When people just "be who they are" and tell the stories that impacted them both personally and professionally. I appreciate Brian for having the courage to join me, even when he told me he wasn't sure he could.Across the span of about 30 years he served both on a national level, in the US Navy, and then at home with the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Heart pounding chases, engulfed family homes, and a mix of all the calls and situations he handled while trying to keep the community safe and the bad guys behind bars.He told me that he wanted to neatly capture his career in three episodes (1. Send us a textSimon PrinsSimon is a specialist in animal behavior and training, with over 25 years experience of handling and training dogs for police and military operations. His ground-breaking work lies at the intersection of robotics, sensors, and canine abilities, contributing to remarkable success in a wide range of missions. He has trained a multitude of dogs and handlers from special units across the world, rooted in his firm belief that science can significantly enhance our interactions and work with animals. He became a patrol dog handler after joining the Dutch police force, and in 1996 he set up an innovative k9 research and development project, integrating it with covert operations. This involved conceptualizing and developing a training program for radio-guided camera dogs, a system that has achieved global recognition and application. In 2002, Simon handpicked and trained 16 dogs and their handlers to initiate USAR, a dedicated search and rescue operation. His pioneering approach took another step forward in 2006 when he began merging dogs and electronics, outfitting radio-directional canines with sensors and enabling them to carry small robots into operations. Throughout his career, Simon has written numerous training protocols, invented innovative training apparatus, and is in constant demand internationally both as a speaker and a provider of training workshops. He is a staunch advocate of operant conditioning, and is passionate about empowering trainers through tailor-made coaching techniques, seeking to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and practical training to optimize the effectiveness of operational dogs. Currently, Simon leads his own company, ACT!, where he continues to innovate within the remit of police and military k9 training. Checkout Simon's website simonprins.com. What happens when the bond between a K9 handler and his retired working dog is tested by something no training can prepare them for? In this episode, federal law enforcement officer Chris Bingham shares the powerful, behind-the-scenes story of his retired K9 partner, Tambo — a dog who served with unwavering loyalty and is now facing one of the toughest battles a family can experience: hemangiosarcoma, a fast-moving and often terminal diagnosis in dogs. Chris describes how he and Tambo first became partners, how their bond deepened over years of working side by side, and what it really looks like to help a working dog transition into retirement after a lifetime of service. But what makes Chris and Tambo's story especially compelling is how they've chosen to respond to hardship. Rather than turning inward, they've become a source of strength and encouragement for others — offering support to both dogs and humans facing life-altering health challenges. Their journey also highlights the critical role organizations like Project K9 Hero play in supporting retired working dogs who no longer have funding for their care.  This episode offers an intimate and honest look at the loyalty, responsibility, and deep connection between a handler and his dog. It's a story of resilience in the face of devastating news, of a working dog's enduring legacy, and of the unexpected ways humans and animals continue to lift one another up through the hardest chapters of life. Drone News: DJI Ends Support, Matrice 30 Rescue, Shots Fired at Police Drone, Super Fast FPV Drone!

Drone News Update

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 5, 2025 6:21

Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have four stories for you this week. DJI is ending support for some of its Matrice drones and payloads, an DJI Matrice 30 helps rescue a missing elderly man in Oklahoma, a suspect in Missouri reportedly fired shots at a police drone during a chase, and we'll look at a new super fast FPV drone! Let's get to it.First up, DJI has announced that on January 30, 2026, it will officially end all support for six of its legacy enterprise products. This is part of the company's routine product lifecycle management, but it's a big deal for anyone still relying on these platforms. After that date, there will be no more technical support, no official repairs, and no more firmware or compatibility troubleshooting. The products being retired are the Matrice M200 V2, the M210 V2, and the M210 RTK V2. These were and still are the workhorses for many inspection, public safety, and surveying teams. Also on the list are the Zenmuse XT and XT2 thermal cameras, and the Lightbridge 2 transmission system is also being retired. DJI is recommending that users upgrade to newer models to take advantage of improved tech and support.Next up, we have a real-world drones-for-good story! A DJI drone was instrumental in rescuing a 90-year-old man who had been lost for nearly 12 hours in freezing temperatures in Atoka County, Oklahoma. After a massive search involving ground crews and even the National Guard, the Wagoner County Emergency Management team was called in with their drone. Volunteer pilot Eric Lane launched a DJI Matrice 30, and within just fifteen minutes, he spotted a clear heat signature in the woods using the drone's thermal camera. And in our third story this week, an incident in Lee's Summit, Missouri, highlights both the value and the growing risks of using drones in law enforcement. According to KCTV, police were responding to reports of a man trying to get into locked cars. In an effort to find the person, they launched a surveillance drone, another DJI M30T. The drone quickly located a man walking through a driveway and testing car door handles. When the suspect realized he was being watched from above, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired two shots at the drone. Thankfully, the drone was not hit and continued its mission. The drone's live feed allowed officers on the ground to track the suspect as he ran through backyards, eventually leading to his arrest. A K9 unit later recovered a stolen 9mm pistol that the suspect had reportedly dropped. Finally, the FPV speed record has been broken yet again, and this time by a significant margin. The team at Drone Pro Hub has built and flown a custom FPV drone to a verified top speed of 374 miles per hour, or 603.47 kilometers per hour. To put that in perspective, that's nearly half the speed of sound, or Mach 0.49. This new record smashes the one set just a few weeks ago by Luke Maximo Bell's Peregreen 3, which had reached 585 kilometers per hour. The real breakthrough came after analyzing flight data, which revealed that the drone's body was creating too much aerodynamic drag. By redesigning the shape, slimming the nose, and smoothing the body, they managed to cut drag by about 18 percent. That's when they started hitting speeds over 540 kilometers per hour. While a 374-mph drone might not have many practical uses for most of us, the lessons learned about aerodynamics, vibration, and power systems at these speeds could absolutely lead to more stable and efficient drones for everyone. It's a fantastic story of engineering and perseverance. We'll see you on Post Flight, our Premium community show where we share our uncensored opinions that aren't always suitable for YouTube! Have a great weekend! https://dronexl.co/2025/11/30/fpv-drone-603-km-h-speed-record/https://dronexl.co/2025/12/02/suspect-shoots-police-drone-lee-summit-chase/https://dronexl.co/2025/12/02/dji-drone-help-find-missing-elderly-man-cold/

Bigfoot KillersIn a secretive US military company of 110 elite special forces soldiers—divided into 10 teams of riflemen, snipers, and K9 units—formed under President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960s following the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film, the narrator details a half-century of hunting North America's deadliest cryptids. Evolving from Project Blue Book researchers to hardened operators after confirming the threats of "things that go bump in the night," the unit conducts covert missions across the continental US (and occasionally abroad) to eliminate hostiles like Bigfoot, Dogmen, and even extraterrestrials while rescuing civilians. Supported by on-site scientists and advanced IT/satellite guidance, they've eliminated over 200 Bigfoots and several Dogmen in the past two decades, often capturing specimens alive for transport to undisclosed sites. Key missions highlight the perils:Texas Ranch Raid: A full-company op targeted an injured rogue male Bigfoot slaughtering cattle; snipers downed it effortlessly, revealing a broken leg likely from trauma, before airlifting the carcass.New Mexico Grey Encounter: Responding to harassment of an official, the team cornered a elusive, mind-manipulating Grey alien on secluded land. Firearms failed against its elastic, cartilaginous body; hand-to-hand combat with knives finally severed its head, bagging the hairless, putty-like corpse for extraction—the narrator's most dreaded foe.Michigan Dogman Hunt (2018): All units mobilized after a high-ranking officer's relative was eviscerated, uncovering two more hunter victims. Guided by IT to funnel the demonic-seeming, near-unstoppable beast into a kill zone, the team unleashed overwhelming firepower, defying orders to capture it alive.Kentucky-Indiana Bigfoot Jamboree (2020): Amid a missing boy in Land Between the Lakes and sightings near Mammoth Cave (where some escaped underground), nine more Bigfoots were herded via IT to a wildlife area. The unit orchestrated inter-group battles, using claymores and gunfire to eliminate most, pursuing a lone escapee into Shawnee National Forest over three days. The narrator shares cryptid insights: Bigfoots form protective family groups (harmless unless provoked), but rogue male packs pose the greatest threat, exhibiting tree-climbing agility, human influence, and brutal kills (e.g., impaling a hunter 20 feet up, blamed on a "tree stand fall"). Juveniles occasionally abduct children out of curiosity, while injured elders turn predatory. Dogmen, by contrast, evoke supernatural dread with their resilience and savagery. As the company faces deployment to Europe—amid rumors of new threats—the soldier pens this from a library during weekend leave, reaffirming his oath to defend against domestic and foreign horrors. He vows to share European tales if he returns intact.Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support

In this episode of K9's Talking Scents, Cameron Ford sits down with world-renowned trainer Michael Ellis for one of the most in-depth conversations ever recorded on reinforcement theory, over-arousal, odor commitment, reward schedules, and why many detection dog programs unintentionally create false alerts.Together they break down the problems behind “reward-rich” training systems, how reinforcement can become punishing, why omission matters, and how to build dogs who persist, stay committed to odor, and search with accuracy — even in operational environments where rewards rarely come. This episode covers:• Why dogs become toy-obsessed instead of odor-committed• How handlers accidentally create false alerts• Why “continuous reinforcement” destroys operational reliability• Rewarding search vs rewarding finds• The science of frustration, dopamine, and over-performance• The difference between learning behavior and maintaining behavior• Why real-world deployments MUST be represented during training• How to introduce blanks, variable schedules, and expectation violation• "Satan's Infinite Loop" and how trainers build bad habits into dogs• Why many dogs don't indicate because they want the search to continue• How to build persistent, reliable, stable detection dogsIf you're a detection dog handler, trainer, supervisor, or K9 program manager, this is a masterclass.CHAPTERS00:00 — Intro & catching up01:00 — Online education & training libraries02:00 — Are rewards harming performance?05:00 — Reinforcement vs intrinsic motivation07:00 — Over-arousal in detection dogs08:30 — Searching for toys vs searching for odor10:00 — False alerts & frustration12:00 — The “cheat code” problem14:30 — Reward-rich environments vs real deployments17:00 — Continuous vs variable reinforcement19:00 — Training that mirrors real-world operations21:30 — Expectation violation & handler discomfort23:00 — Why easy training creates weak dogs26:00 — Dogs that quit vs dogs that persist28:00 — Reducing rewards without breaking the dog30:30 — Reading search behavior correctly32:00 — Consistency in training fundamentals35:00 — Foundation errors that create future problems38:00 — When to introduce blanks41:00 — Reinforcing end-of-search behaviors44:00 — Fixing continuously rewarded dogs47:00 — Why dogs miss the first odor49:00 — Over-arousal & compensation behaviors52:00 — Indication obsession & unintended consequences54:00 — Odor recognition vs sit/down behavior57:00 — Natural indications & reading the dog59:00 — Satan's Infinite Loop explained________________________________________
