PPP 521 | Neuroscience-Based Principles to Resolve Conflicts, with Dr. Jeremy Pollack

Summary In this episode, Andy sits down with Dr. Jeremy Pollack, a social-organizational psychologist and founder of Pollack Peacebuilding Systems, author of Wired for Peace: Using 7 Neuroscience-Based Principles to Resolve Conflicts. Jeremy looks at conflict through the lens of the brain and nervous system, which helps explain why disagreements escalate so quickly and why the fixes we reach for often make things worse. Andy and Jeremy talk about why de-escalation has to come before problem-solving, since solutions and stress do not mix. Jeremy walks us through his Sapien Model of six basic psychological needs, giving us a far more useful lens than labeling a stakeholder difficult, defensive, or resistant. You will hear how memory and prediction shape the way we read the person in front of us, what a team learns when its leader consistently avoids conflict, and why changing our experience of conflict requires new experiences, not just new beliefs. Jeremy also shares how this shows up at home, in marriage and parenting. If you're looking for a practical, evidence-based way to handle the conflicts that come with leading, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "The most fruitful relationships from what I've seen at work, at home, et cetera, are those that can weather storms without the real fear of abandonment." "That was pretty interesting to me to see how much of the science is telling us that, like, our brain is mostly a predictive machine." "Anytime we're in an escalated or emotionally charged state, there's something going on in our brains, usually subconsciously, that's tracking a threat or an impediment to our basic needs." "It's de-escalate first because solutions and stress just don't mix." "What I'm feeling right now is not a result of what the person's saying. It's a result of the way my body is responding." "I call it an experiential thumbprint. It's completely unique to you and no one else has your nervous system, and you don't have anyone else's." "If we have a negative experience with someone and we go into a place of fear or pain or anger or something like that, the way that we see them going forward can change very, very quickly, and it's a lot harder to get us to unsee that." "We access memories in edit mode. And so after we retrieve it, and when we write it back, it's not always quite the same thing, and that's always made me question not is that memory correct as much as is it completely correct." "All conflict is an opportunity for learning." "The threat of abandonment is the big thing to really watch for when we're having arguments." What if the way you think, react, connect, and lead isn’t random? What if there’s a blueprint running underneath it all? On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black takes listeners inside the schematics of being human, exploring the mental and emotional programs that shape how we see ourselves, other people, and the world around us. Many of these patterns begin forming early in life. They become our internal operating system, influencing what we believe about safety, love, trust, belonging, worth, and identity. Some of those programs serve us well. Others may have helped us survive one season but continue running long after we need them. Using Schema Therapy, Mr. Black explores the traditional 5 Domains and 18 Early Maladaptive Schemas, showing how deeply rooted patterns can influence our relationships, work, self-talk, and leadership. But understanding the schematic is only the beginning. This episode breaks down five steps for changing the program: Awareness – Recognize the pattern that's running Compassion – Understand why it developed New Experiences – Create evidence that challenges the old program Repetition – Strengthen healthier responses over time Support – Surround yourself with people who reinforce growth Because the brain isn't fixed. Through neuroplasticity and new experiences, old patterns can be questioned, updated, and replaced. And that's especially important for leaders. The way you show up can reinforce another person's old programming, or it can become part of the environment that helps them build something healthier. You can look at the schematic. You can recognize the pattern. And you can begin changing the program. This is an Hour of Power about understanding yourself, understanding others, and becoming better at the business we're all in: the People Business. Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we're diving into a totally new adventure—our first-ever hypnotherapist and past-life regression event. From our expectations to what actually happened (yes… it got interesting), we share the insights, surprises, and the parts we're still trying to make sense of. If you've ever wondered what it's really like to step into a guided trance, this one's for you. For our “her”story segment, we turn the spotlight on the one-and-only Ethel Merman—the powerhouse Broadway icon with a voice that could stop traffic and a career that shaped American musical theatre. We explore her boldness, her brilliance, and how she embodied taking up space in the loudest, most fabulous way possible. And of course, we wrap up with our signature segment: Our Big Buts—where we confess the excuses or internal roadblocks we're bumping up against this week, and what we're learning from them. Join us for curiosity, courage, laughter, and maybe even a past life or two. Reach out to Rayven @brave_rayven Watch the video version in the wholeness library. Desire feels mismatched. Emotional connection fades. Sex becomes pressured or avoided. In this episode, we explore why intimacy isn't something you find again — it's something you build over time through emotional safety, curiosity, and shared experiences. We talk about how play and novelty reduce defensiveness, why new experiences create powerful bonding moments in the brain, and how small, realistic shifts (not grand gestures) can dramatically improve emotional, physical, and sexual connection. We also break down the different types of intimacy — emotional, physical, sexual, spiritual, and intellectual — and help couples clarify what they want their intimate relationship to feel like now. This episode offers a practical framework for:Letting go of old intimacy stories that no longer fitCreating a shared vision for connection that honors both partnersBuilding habits that foster desire without pressure or obligationAddressing real-life blocks like stress, parenting, mental health, and time constraintsShifting intimacy from a task into an experience of connection and pleasureWe also emphasize that intimacy is a living practice, not a one-time conversation. Couples who revisit these conversations regularly — with curiosity instead of defensiveness — build more secure, resilient relationships over time.In This Episode, We Cover:Why play and novelty are essential for long-term intimacyHow to create a new intimacy story instead of chasing the pastThe role of emotional safety in rebuilding desireHow stress, avoidance, and pressure quietly sabotage connectionPractical ways to bring intimacy into everyday life (not just the bedroom)A simple reflection exercise to identify how you feel desiredAction Step for ListenersTake a few minutes to reflect — alone or with your partner:How do I feel desired emotionally? How do I feel desired physically? How do I feel desired sexually? These answers can become the foundation of your new intimacy story.Want More Support? Our Relationship Renovation at Home Patreon includes a full, step-by-step intimacy series designed to help couples build emotional safety, repair communication, and create lasting connection at their own pace. Chasing external success but hitting ND burnout walls? In this episode of Adulting with Autism, host April explores personal mastery for neurodivergent high achievers with Jerry Henderson, creator of The Personal Mastery Framework™, author/speaker/coach/Personal Mastery Podcast host. Trained at Harvard in human behavior/neuroanatomy/resilience/habits (MBA Global Business, Master's Psychology in progress), Jerry helps trauma survivors (like his own childhood/burnout/imposter journey) blend IFS/NLP/positive psych for emotional resilience, limiting belief rewiring, and whole life success—beyond grind to clarity/peace. Key insights: Mindset pillar: Reframe fixed to growth (stress mindset, CBT for shame-driven achieving). NLP for beliefs: Anchor positive states, disrupt emotional loops (e.g., "happy button" for anxiety/perfectionism). Whole life vs. high performance: Holistic (relationships/sleep/nervous system) for thriving, not survival. Trauma-informed: IFS parts work (protectors/exiles), curiosity over judgment for resilience (ACEs impact). Habit formation: Start small/stack (atomic habits), align with self-worth to avoid sabotage. Clarity/peace: Intrinsic motivation, self-acceptance—external wins without void-filling. Authentic connection: Vulnerability in safe relationships (one fully disclosing starts it). Burnout fix: Honest self-reflection, ask help; job hopping ignores root causes (toxic patterns follow). For autistic/ADHD high performers in imposter/shame cycles, Jerry's framework (post-$1B philanthropy) sustains growth. Free call/resource at jerryhenderson.org. He's also held clinical positions at some of the leading addiction treatment programs in Texas.  As Chief Executive Officer of Contemporary Medicine Associates (CMA) — the primary practice of Dr. Bo Allaire and Dr. Andrew Krieger — he leads a team specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders. CMA also provides third-party medical services for psychiatric and addiction treatment facilities, as well as clinical and business consulting services for mental health providers.  Originally founded over 20 years ago by Dr. Eugene Degner, one of the first board-certified addiction medicine doctors in Texas and a pioneer in the medical treatment of alcohol and drug addiction, CMA continues to honor Dr. Degner's legacy through compassionate, expert care.  Today, their doctors, nurses, and mental health professionals serve patients and families at every stage of addiction and recovery — providing a caring, non-judgmental environment where healing can truly begin. They also offer comprehensive support for individuals with mental health conditions such as depression, trauma, and anxiety. In this conversation, Dr. Jason Powers and Dr. Andrew Krieger discuss the different phases of recovery, the science behind post-acute withdrawal syndrome, and the meaning of emotional sobriety. Together, they explore how long-term recovery is less about counting the years and more about integrity, emotional growth, and learning to live a life that's genuinely fulfilling. Topics Discussed: Defining Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) The difference between co-occurring disorders & substance use disorder Breaking down emotional sobriety into 3 main categories Understanding the phases of recovery and personal growth How perspective and integrity define Long-Term Sobriety, not just time Finding fulfillment beyond survival in recovery — CHAPTERS:  00:00 Introduction to Positive Recovery MD 01:09 Meet Our Guest: Andrew Krieger 01:40 Andrew's Journey to Sobriety 03:45 Career Transition and Professional Growth 06:36 Phases of Recovery 09:57 Understanding Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome & Co-Occurring Disorders 15:48 Emotional Sobriety Explained 20:00 Why Length of Abstinence Doesn't Equate to Emotional Maturity 21:40 Personal Stories in Early Recovery 23:55 The Importance of Supportive Relationships and Accountability 27:55 Finding a Balance in Sobriety and New Experiences in Recovery  31:58 Reflections on Personal Journey and Finding Peace  — Connect with Dr. Andrew Krieger:  Website: www.cmamed.com  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-krieger-6864745  — Connect with PRC on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters  FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters  TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter  LI: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters  YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Want even more expert insights and support on the recovery journey? Hashem Wants Me to Coronate Him as My King; But What If I'm Not Interested? This text-based class is the second of a two-part series on a historic Sicha (address) by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, given at the Farbrengen of Shabbos Parshas Shoftim, 7 Elul, 5748, August 20, 1988, published in Sefer Hasichos 5748 vol. 2. This class, exploring the essence of our relationship with Hashem, what it means to know Him in all your ways, what is the core of education, and why Elul is not desginated as a month of joy, was presented on Friday, 12 Elul, 5785, September 5, 2025, Parshas Ki Seitzei, at Bais Medrash Ohr Chaim in Monsey, NY. For much of our lives, especially our struggles, there are no clear directives in Torah on how to deal with them. So we search for people to guide us all the time, to tell us what to do. But the real essence of Judaism is to learn how to trust yourself, your true innate oneness with Hashem, and truth. This address by the Rebbe is life-changing in how we see ourselves, our children, and our relationship with Hashem, and how we step away from a trauma-based Judaism to a redemptive consciousness. Episode #163 : Traveling to London with a mix of excitement and nerves can be as daunting as it is exhilarating. I remember discussing this with my eyelash queen, Marie, while she carefully crafted my lashes. Her journey to pursue a master's degree was a reminder that taking one small step leads to big changes. This episode is about those small, consistent actions that build momentum in life, whether it's planning an adventure to Wimbledon with my husband, Brian, or deciding to leave the kids behind for a much-needed escape. Amidst global concerns and travel alerts, we're choosing to embrace the thrill of new experiences. Marie's story is a testament to the power of breaking out of comfort zones. We often get trapped in routines, dreaming of something more but hesitating to act. It's not about the flashy success stories; it's about the everyday actions that propel us forward. I share how relentless consistency, like making that one phone call or sending that email, can be transformative. The episode underscores the idea that the everyday grit, not the glamorous moments, paves the path to achieving dreams. The mundane, unglamorous tasks are where progress happens. I recount setting up my studio's internet, a task I'd rather avoid, as an example of how constant motion leads to overall progress. Juggling responsibilities is part of the journey, and having children only heightens the need for efficiency. From transitioning out of a long finance career to building a media presence, I've learned the importance of keeping promises to oneself. Whether you're seeking personal growth or a career shift, it's about owning your journey, one determined step at a time. Passion and hard work can truly transform your life, and I hope this episode encourages you to believe that you can achieve your dreams with perseverance.

How do you build a high-performance culture without turning your company into the Hunger Games? Reed Hastings, co-founder and former CEO of Netflix, shares lessons from a career spent rewriting the rules—from severance as a management tool to “big-hearted champions who pick up the trash.” In this episode, he reveals how Netflix scaled trust, made bold bets before the data was in, and kept its edge by treating employees like adults—not assets. You'll hear how Hastings evaluates talent beyond the interview, the reason he avoids performance improvement plans, and what most leaders misunderstand about judgment, feedback, and innovation.  You'll also hear why he placed a $100 million bet on House of Cards with no pilot, how Drive to Survive changed an entire sport, and why Squid Game caught even Netflix by surprise.  Now focused on a new chapter—owning a ski mountain, reshaping education through AI tutors, and supporting charter schools—Hastings is still doing what he does best: building systems that scale culture, not just product.  If you care about performance without politics—or culture without the clichés—this is a blueprint from one of the clearest thinkers in modern business.  Approximate timestamps: Subject to variation due to dynamically inserted ads: (3:09) Powder Mountain, Skiing Industry, & Buying a Mountain (6:36) Setting Culture in an Organization (9:21) Hiring Process and Evaluating Candidates (14:24) Netflix's 2009 Slide Deck Release (16:26) Talent Density and Performance Culture (17:59) Loyalty and Team Building (19:56) Severance Packages (22:17) Process Vs.
