Mr Anslow began his martial arts journey around 1986 (whilst still at high school), dabbling in arts such as Shaolin Kung Fu, Wing Chun and even Ninjitsu. At college he studied both Judo and Fencing, before finally settling on Ch'ang Hon (ITF) Taekwon-do in early 1991 at Wembley Taekwon-Do School, under the instructorship of Master David Bryan (then a 5th degree) and Mr John Pepper, 2nd degree. During his formative years in Taekwon-do, he also got the opportunity to study some Jiu-Jitsu as well as training along side his friend (Dave Arnold), a Shotokan black belt, for many years. He graded to black belt in Taekwon-do in early 1994 under the B.U.T.F. and gained his 2nd degree in 1996. In 1999 he founded Rayners Lane Taekwon-do Academy, which ran in the same location until 2007, when the hall was demolished and we move into the newly built dojang (training hall), just a few hundred years away, continuing to run there ever since. In 2000 he graded to 3rd degree under Master Juan Mahai of the KTA (Korean Taekwondo Association), as well as winning a gold and silver medal at the AIMAA World Championships. In 2002, along with a couple of friends in the USA & Canada he founded IAOMAS (International Alliance of Martial Art Schools), which continues to flourish under the guidence of Mr Colin Wee, to this day. Stuart Anslow - Chief Instructor In 2003 he was inducted into Combat magazines 'Hall of Fame' & in 2004 he graded to 4th degree whilst in the USA, as well as 7 of his students becoming World Champions (2 as double world gold medallists) at the 2nd AIMAA World Championships. In 2005 he started writting his first book (Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-do Hae Sul, Vol. 1), which was released in 2006 to critical acclaim to Taekwon-Do students around the world. Also in 2005, he went from part-time instructor, to full-time instructor, establishing Harrow Martial Arts. Having written for and been interviewed in many martial arts magazines over the years, in early 2009 he started his own magazine; Totally Tae Kwon Do magazine, a global Tae Kwon Do magazine loved by all that read it, which he editted and ran free for 40 issues and is still going strong today. In 2010 he graded to 5th degree (along side fellow instructor Mr Vikram Gautam who was grading for 3rd degree) under legendary Taekwon-do pioneering Master, Willie Lim, 8th degree. Also in 2010 he released a further 3 books (The Encylopedia of Taekwon-Do Patterns, Vols. 1, 2 & 3), all of which were received extremely well and became top sellers Also in 2010 Mr Anslow was awarded a citation from Dr. Chungwon Choue, (then) President of the WTF (World Taekwondo Federation), South Korea, recognizing his 'outstanding contribution to the development of Taekwondo'. In 2012 he released the second volume of Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-do Hae Sul, which so many had been waiting for. Again, it was very well recieved. In 2013 he released his sixth book, From Creation To Unification, which is adored by many due to its in-depth historical contents regarding Taekwon-Do, in 2015 his first book (Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-do Hae Sul, Vol. 1) was released as a Spanish version as well and in 2017 he released his 7th book, 'Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-Do Hosinsul' which was a detailed look at the self-defence aspect of Taekwon-Do (known as Hosinsul). In 2022, as well as his daughter gaining her 1st Degree black belt, he graded for 6th Degree, under Master Hay Harris, 7th Degree (Himself a Master promoted by Grandmaster Willie Lim, 9th Dan) Over the years he has taught numerous seminars (both home and abroad) on the applications of Taekwon-do's patterns (as well as other aspects of the art, such as knife and gun defence) and in 2015 he travelled to South Korea with one of his senior students, where he not only got to experience the fantastic culture of Korea and many historically relevant places, but also taught Taekwon-do in the homeland of the art, over the course of 10 days. And he returned in 2018, with another of his students, Matthew Baxter. Mr Anslow has 4 lovely children and continues to run the Academy. To him, Taekwon-Do is not a hobby or a part-time job, its not even a full-time job; it his his career that he devotes his life to, both developing excellent students, whilst continuing to promote and develop that art he loves.

Master Ali Abdul Karim studied Shinobi-no-jitsu (Ninjitsu) from world famous and noted Grand Master Ronald Duncan since 1969. As fate would have it, Master Karim's older brother Richard started him off in the martial arts in 1967 and later Master Karim went on to study Shotokan Karate from some of his local friends. Richard Lewis (brother of Master Karim) wanted him to take some formal classes. Master Karim used to watch Grand Master Duncan's classes from the window at the Dojo at 519 Court St. near his home. Richard was going to take his younger brother to study with Grandmaster Ron Van Cliff and to their surprise the dojo was closed. Master Karim's dream came true. Richard took Master Karim down the dojo on Court St. where he would begin his long journey on the warrior's path. Master Karim spent a lifetime pursuing perfection in field of self defense and personal security. Through his study of Asian Martial Arts and Western Combat training, he later founded the Star and Crescent School of Essential Knowledge, along with his student, Brother Daud Jalaladin in 1974. Master Karim is the director and the head The Star and Crescent Martial Arts Federation of with schools along the East Coast. Star and Crescent is associated with and is a part of the Way of the Winds Federation that is supervised by Grand Master Ronald Duncan. Ninjitsu is the ancient Japanese martial art involving security, surveillance, and commando warfare. Some of the arts that Master Karim has studied is Aikijutsu, Kempo Jutsu, Hakko Ryu Jujutsu, Kenjutsu, Aikido under Prof. Luqman Hakeem, aspects of Shiao Lin Chin Na, Fu Jiao Pau, Pa Qua Kung Fu, Eagle Claw, White Eyebrow Kung Fu, Tai chi quan, Shiao Lin Chi Gung, Wing Chung Kung Fu, and the Monkey Style to name only a few. It only seemed natural for Master Karim to pursue the modern Western approach to balance his training. Master Karim is an expert in SWAT team operations, pistol disarmament, and special reaction security. In 1982, the Military Police Corps unit of the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, NJ awarded him a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his outstanding performance as a primary instructor for the National Association of Tactical Teams (NATT), a special reaction team for combat. Master Kareem earned a certificate of achievement for the completion of the Advanced Urban Assault Rappel course, and Advanced Elevated Urban Operations course. Master Karim is a Licensed Private Investigator and is a CEO of his own Security firm. With his training in personal self defense, security, and combat training, Master Karim is requested to teach seminars across the Eastern Seaboard and in the Caribbean. Master Karim has also helped to organize an educational plan for youths and adults about personal protection, self defense, and conflict resolution in the community. He is currently teaching the martial arts in Brooklyn, NY, and is truly a pillar in his community. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martial-maze/support

UK actor and filmmaker Joey Ansah’s imagination was sparked at an early age through the power of the classic Hong Kong action movie, Dragons Forever, and the Street Fighter video game. The son of a famous Ghanaian fashion designer father and a UK mother, Joey grew up immersed in both British and African culture. His passion was, and still is, the martial arts, becoming a famous online ‘tricker’ and skilled in Capoeira, Taekwondo, Ninjitsu and many other styles. Working as a fight choreographer, extra, stuntman and actor, his big break arrived in what Rolling Stone called “the best fight scene ever filmed”, duking it out with Matt Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Since 2010, Joey has been working tirelessly towards bringing his beloved Street Fighter story to TV screens, following a short film (2010’s Street Fighter: Legacy), an epic web series (2015’s exemplary Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist), and an online follow-up (2016’s Street Fighter: Resurrection). In 2018, shortly after this conversation was recorded at his London home, it was announced that eOne and the Mark Gordon Company had given the green light to a new Street Fighter TV show with Joey Ansah acting as one of its executive producers. His latest acting project is Mission: Impossible – Fallout, the sixth in the Mission: Impossible film franchise starring Tom Cruise. Next year, Joey will be appearing in Joe Cornish’s The Kid Who Would Be King and Guy Ritchie’s live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin. Keep up to date with all the latest Joey Ansah news by following him on Facebook and Instagram.

It’s a month of uncanny anniversaries. Last week we celebrated 60 years of Godzilla, and this week it’s 30 years of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In this episode we talk with Steve Murphy – the most prolific Ninja Turtles author of all-time; having written more Turtles stories in more mediums than even the TMNT’s creators. As his pen name, Dean Clarrain, Murphy wrote Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures – the definitive Turtles comic of the 90s and the longest continuous TMNT comic series of all time. It started as an adaptation of the late 80s cartoon series, but quickly mutated into amazing science-fantasy adventures that saw the Turtles become intergalactic wrestling sensations, jump 100 years in the future, travel the world, and join forces with mutant animals of every kind. This anniversary is a momentous occasion for fans of TMNT Adventures – because in IDW’s recently-released 30th Anniversary Special Murphy and series artist Chris Allan return to that universe for the first time in 20 years. Join Cap, Colin, and Doug as they go deep into the fungus-covered corridors of TMNT history and discuss TMNT cereal contests gone awry, training April in Ninjitsu, the untimely demise of the Mighty Mutanimals, formative life experience through Turtles comics, and tales from the Turtles original home, Mirage Studios, right up to the sale to Nickelodeon. It’s a wild ride 30 years in the making and a must-listen for any Shell Head who grew up pouring over Turtles comics, or any fan eager to go on a journey into the lesser-known history of the TMNTs. Yeah we know you’ve missed us, just like we missed you all! That’s why we are back and with more awesomeness and more stuff to share with you awesome people! While this show won’t be a full 20 Episodes, we aim to make it a short but sweet season of 10 episodes or so. In this episode we focus on the slew of incredibly awesome films coming out this year, with trailer reviews and a couple of cool movie reviews, (Captain America 2 and Lego the Movie), we also have a few Tech Reviews of Google Chromecast and Amazon FireTV. But the heart of this episode resides within the Ninjitsu and Martial Arts phenomenon. With a brief but informative historic background on where Ninjas come from and what they were in comparison to Shoguns and Samurai’s, we talk about the impact Martial Arts have had on the world. From movies, music, to the military, the Ninjitsu’s way of combat has been translated into many modern fighting methods. So without further delay, we send out a special Birthday greeting to our new listener Natasha and a special greeting to Josh O’Brien who’s work can be seen here http://www.joshjobrien.com Sit back and as usual, put on your easy pants, and relax, because the show is about to begin!!! -Stephen Routsis

One cannot master the art of Ninjitsu without the most important maneuver in the martial artist's arsenal...what the masters call, loosely translated, "Roll and Move." That's why we're playing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Power game from 1987! In this game, players pick their Turtle of choice and battle an endless army of punks, Shredders and Krangs until they earn the right to enter the Technodrome and defeat the Bad Guys once and for all. However, mere basic arithmetic skills are not sufficient to take down the Foot Clan...you'll need to use the Battle Flipper to land a die in the right plastic compartment to collect your trophy and prevent your Good Guys from fleeing to the discard pile. Does a board game with roll and move combined with dexterity elements work as well as a pizza with peanut butter and sauerkraut? Then, will our newly developed Ninja skills with the Battle Flipper be enough to prevent us from losing all our points in the Battle of Wits? Get in the Turtle Van...and set a course for fun! Just watch out for the electric seaweed.
