Cowabunga it is. This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill react to the Nintendo Direct that absolutely everyone was waiting for (sarcasm intended) and review what might just be another GotY contender on Switch. The gang starts out by reacting to the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Direct with a perfectly balanced slate of impressions: whether or not you chose to watch this much-anticipated Direct or you're holding out for that elusive general Direct, the hosts serve up a slate of hot takes for what's sure to be one of the summer's biggest games. After that, it's time for the hosts to dish out the spiciest of takes regarding Aspyr's unpatched, apparently known game-breaking bug that makes it completely impossible to finish the new Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. How did this ever get past QA? As always, let's blame capitalism. Closing things on a much more radical note, the gang grab their pizza and ninja gear to review the long-awaited Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. This beat 'em up from Dotemu and Tribute Games is every bit as good as we'd hoped, and then some: whether you grew up with the Turtles in the 80s, 90s, or 2000s, this bodacious brawler has a little something for everyone (plus one of this year's best soundtracks). It's the perfect multiplayer bash for two thirds of podcast hosts! Cowabunga it is. Slight change of plans, dear listener. Paul is out of town again this week, so we've pushed the “favorite weapons in video games” episode back a few weeks and are, instead, talking about some of our weird (and not weird) gaming associations. Ron and Joey talk a brisk jaunt down memory lane and share some associations we have with specific games. Which game do you suppose one of us used No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom album as a soundtrack for? And which of us was watching Dateline, playing Doom, and listening to Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral? We also meander in and out of related memories, including Zours candies, The Box (a music video dial-in show from the 80s/90s), gaming snacks and more. We also talk about the partner lineup for next week's Summer Game Fest, KotOR coming to Switch, Sailor Jupiter, and what we've been playing. Buon ascolto! Soundtraccia: Outcastempo - Alessandro Mucchi / Outcast Sala Giochi Loop - Alessandro Mucchi. Maybe shouldn’t say by far because MM3 is close behind Spidershan Only got a chance to beat the robot masters this week but I always like returning to this game. I was never as good as my friend but I remember watching him play it to completion. I think the first time I beat it was with a Game Genie. I finally beat it years later without the help. Now I am using save states so I guess I’ve gone full circle. rofl The music is spot on and some of the most memorable at the time (next to Mario and Zelda). The guys finish up their play through of Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and find themselves with a bit of a quandary. A kind of moral question. They, of course, answer it in the most "Great Disturbances" way possible. Party mustache not included.Find GREAT DISTURBANCES on Facebook, Twitter, or email us at greatdisturbances@gmail.com We'd love a review, too! Episode 14: Star Wars, Good God Y'All! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! Many stars, many wars, but only one podcast episode. We take a meandering look at the religion/fandom/industry/empire that is Star Wars. Somehow we remain mostly spoiler free, though we jump between all the movies (even the unmentionable ones) and even a little of the games. John throws some shade on J. J. (Abrams) while Brandon falls for the wookies and their trees and champions robot rights. We coin (discover?) the term "robophobe." Ducrossy folks, most ducrossy. Links: The character Brandon mentions from the game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords is Kreia (or read on the Wookieepedia) SMBC vegan comic Asimov's Laws The op-ed John mentions, Why do people believe in hell? in the NY Times There is a mod for Knights of the Old Republic II to restore the droid planet, or read about it here Check out our podcasting host, Pinecast. What happens if you leave Vanessa and Johnny alone to wrap up a game? Over two and a half hours of a two-fister, that's what happens. We can't be trusted to keep on track, so not only do we work through the last eight or so hours of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords but somehow also get into Vanessa's vague recollections of Yaddle's expanded unvierse backstory, we spend way too long googling Ed Asner's resume, talk about the merits and drawbacks of the idealism of The West Wing, and we find out that Vanessa can't do a Wookie impression at all. This Week: "We" finish KOTOR 2! Next Week: We blow up the Sector 5 reactor and get to the Wall Market in Final Fantasy VII! Our Patreon: patreon.com/squarerootspodcast Contact Square Roots! NEXT GAME ANNOUNCED! It's a Johnny and Vanessa two-fister in this odd chunker of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. First of all, we research Alanis's financial situation, Johnny plots out his own edit of How I Met Your Mother while forgetting the name of Jason (?) Segal (?), and then we get into the Super Secret Cave of Secrets (AKA a Luke Cave), go on a guided tour of the Sith Ruins, answer some SAT questions and restore a hereditary monarchy. Now go get that definitely not evil Kreia a burrito. This Week: We finish Korriban and return to Onderon! Next Week: We finish KOTOR 2! As time marches on, many people remember the BioWare/Star Wars classic Knights of the Old Republic fondly. It stands out to them as the quintessential RPG experience and a bar by which all subsequent RPGs find themselves judged. Less frequently, however, do people consider Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, the technically flawed, but narratively richer younger sibling. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment under some of the tightest time constraints RPG developers have ever experienced, Obsidian was tasked with delivering a sequel to one of the greatest RPGs of all-time with only a year of development time. Were they able to succeed? Joining us this week is prolific game critic and Escapist columnist Elijah Beahm. In addition to his gaming and writing talents, Elijah happens to be one of the most knowledgeable figures on the Star Wars universe that you could hope to find. We talk about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order before launching into a prolonged discussion about the trials and tribulations of KotOR II. We also have a spoiler discussion of Respawn's Fallen Order that you can listen to if you become a patron over on patreon.com/bestgamesperiod! Be sure to follow Elijah's work and Star Wars ranting over on @UnabridgedGamer. We’re keeping our convention specials going this month with Kristen’s coverage of Star Wars Celebration Chicago! She recaps her experience tackling such a large convention from photo ops to panels to pin trading to trudging through the snow to get to the convention center! She gives Victoria her main takeaways from Celebration - including the encouragement she felt for the Star Wars fandom from being among all her fellow Star Wars fans as well as the importance of prioritizing your top events. Finally, Kristen shares her interviews with four spectacular women who span the Star Wars fandom: Dianne Vaznelis (aka Diha) is a digital artist and designer who has worked in the pop culture and gaming industries since 2012. Best known for her soft but vibrant palette, she has created licensed apparel designs for a number of popular properties, including her first love, Star Wars. She is currently an illustrator and assistant designer for indie tabletop publisher Archon Games. Follow Diane: Instagram: @diha_artwork Twitter: @diha_artwork Facebook: @diha_artwork www.diha-artwork.com Zoraida Córdova may be known best for her contribution to the anthology Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View with the short story “You Owe Me a Ride”, which gives a window into the Tonnika Sisters during A New Hope. Her next Star Wars YA novel will be a Galaxy’s Edge inspired titled A Crash of Fate, due out in August 2019. Her other novels include the Brooklyn Brujas series and The Vicious Deep trilogy. She is the co-editor of Vampires Never Get Old, a YA anthology forthcoming from Imprint/Macmillan in fall 2020. Follow Zoraida: Instagram: @zoriadasolo Twitter: @zlikeinzorro Facebook: @ZCordovaBooks zoraidacordova.com Emma Fyffe is an actress and producer who frequently shares her take on her favorite shows, appearing on Collider, Twitch and more. Jump in for a journey of discovery, as we experience one of the most heavily recommended subversions of all the aspects of Star Wars that we thought we didn't like, only to realize that without them our hearts feel empty and we feel lost.
