This week we resume our regular programming by looking at the work of writer, director Jonathan Demme. Demme started his career working for Roger Corman, directing 3 films (CAGED HEAT, CRAZY MAMA, FIGHTING MAD), before going off to make films like SWING SHIFT, MELVIN AND HOWARD, SOMETHING WILD. As well as directing films, he also has directed documentaries, TV shows, music videos and live concert films like STOP MAKING SENSE. Demme is stills going strong in his old age, having released a film back in 2015, called RICKI AND THE FLASH. Matt talks about Dark Places and then tells us about sitting down and watching all the Twilight films.....ouch. Adam talks about The Wrecking Crew, The Search for General Tso and The Tribe. We were so Ready for Ricki. Really we were. And, well, you’ll just have to listen to the podcast. Starring, of course, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Audra McDonald, Rick Springfield, and Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep’s real-life daughter). And Hollister sends a special shout-out to the bartender in Ricki and the Flash - played by Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect). Add two more Oscar winners to the mix: screenplay by Diablo Cody (Juno); directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs). Meryl Streep - who once trained with the same voice coach as Beverly Sills - learned to play rhythm guitar for the movie. And in honor of the Rick in Ricki, we end the podcast with a live performance of Rick Springfield performing “Jessie’s Girl” (he used the same guitar in the film - but to play a truly supportive band member, held it at a higher angle). On this week’s episode Kris shares his plans to weaponize peeing babies with Dave and Evan, before Evan tears FANTASTIC FOUR a new one. The film is terrible in many ways, but Evan just can’t let go of one particularly obnoxious plot hole. After the three of them engage in some Tenacious D-inspired swearing, Dave talks about SHAUN THE SHEEP, a delightful movie that everyone should see. Kris then discusses how Meryl Streep’s Republican grocery store cashier safely rebels through rock music in the confusing RICKI AND THE FLASH. Somehow that leads to Dave and Evan singing about squirrels. Finally, Evan closes everything out with THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT, a picture that would work better as a documentary, rockumentary, or shockumentary than the flat, repetitive narrative that it is. For some reason all the roads lead back to urine and squirrels in this episode.
