After a dynamite run in the 1970s, working under luminaries like Altman, Kubrick, Allen, and Gilliam, Shelley Duvall's career went... other places. Here, Marty and Scott scour the back half of this great actor's filmography... mostly so that you don't have to.Films we pressed against our eyeballs this week:Roxanne (1987, Dir. This week, like the sand-people of Arrakis and Beetlejuice audiences before us, we're afraid of worms (worms!) as guest Rachel Hadaway (of Rachel's Chart Chat on The People Are The Enemy) goes for a steeply inclined stroll with us to breathe the mountain air in beautiful Nelson, Washington as circle back to the coziness of the Steve Martin rom-com. It's 1987's Roxanne, directed by Fred Schepisi, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin opposite Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall, Rick Rossovich, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard, Damon Wayans and of course Nelson, British Columbia, which almost played itself! A landmark 80s film for Canadians seeing their country onscreen, north of the border it seems more beloved for its locations than its clever reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac for a modern context. But this is a funny movie with a romance that works, brought to us from the dusty DVR box of a long-time booster of our show who we were happy to finally bring on! Plus: As we put Halloween season behind us, Justin goes deep on the truly terrible Blade: Trinity. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along, Roxanne is not currently available to stream in Canada, but can be found on Amazon Prime in America at the time of publication. Other works referenced on this episode include Saturday Night, Challengers, Wicked, Blade, Blade II, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Witches of Eastwick, Practical Magic, V/H/S/94, So I Married An Axe Murderer, A Serious Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Reality Show Show, 8 Mile, The Lonely Guy, Review, Police Academy, The Muppet Babies, Set It Up, and Looney Tunes among others. We'll be back next week as No-Theme-ber continues... with what? We don't actually know yet. So keep it locked here to find out. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Reel Britannia podcast - a very British podcast about very British movies...with just a hint of professionalism. Scott and Steven are joined this week by their dear friend Mark, host of The Good, The Bad and The Odd podcast, to chat about a touching, bittersweet journey of friendship and regret, as four old friends fulfill a promise to scatter their late friend's ashes. Last Orders (2001) "Last Orders" (2001), directed by Fred Schepisi, is a poignant drama centered around a group of lifelong friends fulfilling their deceased friend's final wish. The story revolves around four aging men—Ray (Bob Hoskins), Lenny (David Hemmings), Vic (Tom Courtenay), and Vince (Ray Winstone)—who embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their friend Jack Dodds (Michael Caine) in the sea at Margate, following his last orders. Jack, a butcher and a pub regular, left behind his widow, Amy (Helen Mirren), who is still grappling with the loss and her own regrets. As the men travel from Bermondsey to Margate, they make several stops significant to their shared history. Each stop triggers memories and flashbacks, revealing their past experiences, relationships, and the complicated dynamics between them. These flashbacks feature a younger version of Jack (JJ Feild), his friends, and his family, providing a deeper understanding of their connections and the life they led. Ray, Jack's best friend and a bookie, reflects on his unrequited love for Jack's wife, Amy, and his own failed marriage. Lenny, a former boxer, grapples with the loss of his son and his troubled relationship with his daughter. Vic, the quiet undertaker, contemplates the significance of life and death, while Vince, Jack's adopted son, struggles with his feelings of inadequacy and the pressure of living up to his father's expectations. As the journey progresses, the men confront their own insecurities, secrets, and unresolved issues. They share stories, argue, and ultimately bond over their shared grief and memories of Jack. Along the way, they visit landmarks such as the war memorial, the pub where they spent countless hours, and the racetrack where Jack placed his bets. Each location holds a piece of their collective past, evoking nostalgia and reflection. In the end, the men reach Margate and scatter Jack's ashes into the sea, honoring his final request. This act of closure allows them to find peace and move forward, forever changed by the journey and the memories they shared with their dear friend. "Last Orders" is a touching exploration of friendship, loss, and the passage of time, beautifully capturing the essence of life's fleeting moments and the impact of enduring bonds. Los Staple Singers te preguntan si le conoces (Do you Know Him?).

This is week one of our Steve Martin theme month! This is a theme month that Rob has been pushing for for a while. To start out we went with the 1987 movie Roxanne.
Would Steve Martin in any other nose smell as sweet? Back in 1987, Fred Schepisi's adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac romanced audiences with its comedic take on an oft-told tale, with Daryl Hannah as the titular astronomist. Now, 35 years later, does the 80s take on an 1897 story feel ... a little dated? Can Rick Rossovich still impress when he's not hitting a Top Gun volleyball around? And how big is this nose by our modern standards where cosmetic surgery battles self-love? The Old Roommates take a telescopic look back at this hit rom com. While the ascetic Brother Francine (Arthur Dignam) prowls the school's corridors looking for evidence of ''the undisciplined mind'', the hard-drinking Brother Victor (Nick Tate) refutes the harsh discipline that scars the hearts and minds of the students - through each battle a desire to consummate the pleasures of the flesh. This Australian film classic cemented the rise of director Fred Schepisi (The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith) when it won six AFI awards including Best Film and Best Director and made a breakthrough screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976.Director: Fred SchepisiCast: Charles McCallum, John Frawley, Arthur DignamExtras:Featurette with director Fred Schepisi and key cast and crewInterview with Fred SchepisiAudio Commentary with Fred SchepisiStills GalleryTheatrical TrailerBlake Howard - Twitter & One Heat Minute Website Alexei Toliopoulos - Twitter & Total RebootSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast, Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: Paul Grabowsky. Paul Grabowsky is a pianist, composer, arranger, conductor – and is one of Australia's most distinguished artists. Born in Papua New Guinea, Paul was raised in Melbourne. During the late 70's he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theatre and cabaret projects. He lived and worked in Europe and the US from 1980-85, during which time he performed with many jazz luminaries including Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin. He returned to Australia in 1986 and established a reputation as one of Australia's leading jazz musicians with such bands as his own trio and sextet, the Wizards of Oz and as musical director for singer Vince Jones. He was musical director of Tonight Live with Steve Vizard (a nationally televised variety show) from 1990-1992. He was Commissioning Editor (Arts and Entertainment) for ABC Television 1995-98. He has written the scores for over twenty feature films in Australia, the UK and US including ‘Innocence' (Paul Cox), ‘Last Orders', ‘The Eye of the Storm', ‘Words and Pictures'(Fred Schepisi) and ‘Shiner' (John Irvin). His television credits include the series ‘Phoenix' and ‘Janus' and the Emmy-winning ‘Empire Falls'. His works for the theatre include four operas and various multimedia works. His most recent opera, created for soprano Emma Matthews, ‘The Space Between', with libretto by Steve Vizard, premiered at Arts Centre Melbourne in September 2018. He is the Founding Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra, which he led from 1994-2013. He has won seven ARIA awards (most recently in 2019 for his recording ‘Tryst' with singer Kate Ceberano)), two Helpmann awards, several APRA and Bell Awards and a Deadly award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the Year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007. He was the 2010 Australian National University H.C.Coombs Fellow. He was Artistic Director of the Queensland Music Festival from 2005-2007 and was Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts for 2010 and 2012. He is currently a Professor at Monash University, and director of the Monash University Academy of Performing Arts and the Monash Art Ensemble. In 2014 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to music and arts administration. In this episode, Paul explains his personal transcribing approach and shows how to profit from every transcription you make. He is also providing many examples of solos that have been significant to his musical growth. Sean Connery returns to the spy game, but since this is written by Tom Stoppard, directed by Fred Schepisi, and based on the novel by John le Carré, you know that this will bear as much relation to a Bond film as chess does to Chutes and Ladders. Also starring Michelle Pfeiffer, John Mahoney, James Fox, J.T. Walsh, and Roy Scheider.

Episode 37 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Fred Schepisi. One of all time great filmmakers. Fred Schepisi steered Meryl Streep to an Oscar nomination for A Cry In The Dark, so too for Stockard Channing in Six Degrees of Separation. In fact, the worlds finest actors have been clamouring to work with Fred for 45 years; Helen Mirren. Donald Sutherland. Kirk Douglas. Michael Douglas. Will Smith. Meg Ryan. Michael Caine. Geoffrey Rush. Sir John Gielgud. Ian McLennan. Ray Winston. John Cleese. Jamie Lee Curtis. Kevin Cline. Tim Robbins, and the list goes on. Fred started out in the advertising world in Melbourne, directing both commercials and documentaries. His first feature-length movie was the semi-autobiographical The Devil’s Playground which won 6 AFI awards including Best Film. The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith , in 1978, won a few more AFI awards and was nominated for Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Fred then began working internationally, highlights include; Plenty (again with Meryl Streep), Roxanne (starring Steve Martin & Darryl Hannah) The Russia House (with Sean Connery & Michelle Pfeiffer), Last Orders, Eye of the Storm, and Words & Pictures starring Juliette Binoche & Clive Owen. The HBO movie Empire Falls, starring Paul Newman, Ed Harris, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Robin Wright, won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture made for Television. Fred has worked across most genres and is a master at adapting books to screen. Appropriately, he was awarded the Order of Australia for his service to the Australian film industry as a director, producer and screenwriter. Fred is a real character and a great conversationalist, he delivers a veritable master-class in film-making in this podcast, so much so, I’m releasing this chat over two episodes. https://fredschepisi.com/ W: https://theblankcanvaspodcast.com.au/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/leerogers12/ SOCIALS Insta: @theblankcanvaspodcast FB - The Blank Canvas Podcast Twitter: @blankcanvaspod THE BLANK CANVAS TEAM Produced by Lee Rogers & Rien MacDonald. They say expanding the Hillview Quarry at Dromana would destroy some of the Mornington Peninsula's "last remnant, old growth bushland". See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Simon Burke (The Devil’s Playground x 2) is in LA for pilot season for the first time EVER. With a career spanning 40 years and two continents, he has found a sense of freedom in being an unknown quantity in this town with a wealth of experience. His no expectations approach is allowing him to enjoy LA for what it is. Of course, it helps that he’s just produced the award winning TV series The Devil’s Playground. He shares with us it’s serendipitous birth, the balance between a producers objectivity vs an actor’s subjectivity and his thoughts on personifying adolescence for a generation of Australian cinema goers in the original film by Fred Schepisi. No pressure…

Holy Aussiewood! To celebrate Another Aussie in LA becoming the official podcast of Australians in Film, this week's ep is a live Q & A chat with Fred Schepisi, acclaimed Australian director of The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Evil Angels, Six Degrees of Separation, Roxanne and The Eye of The Storm. We sit down with Fred after a screening of his new film WORDS AND PICTURES in Los Angeles. Toooooo much wisdom, wit and general amazingness in the form of film stories.
Geoffrey Rush is one of Australia’s most celebrated exports, a protean character actor whose roles have ranged from the mentally frail pianist David Helfgott (his Oscar-winning performance in “Shine”) to George VI’s speech therapist Lionel Logue (“The King’s Speech”) to the Marquis de Sade (“Quills”). Courtesy of the 92nd Street Y He most recent film, in which he is pictured above, is “The Eye of the Storm,” directed by Fred Schepisi, and also starring Judy Davis. The film is based on a novel by the Nobel Prize-winning writer Patrick White, about a domineering matriarch and her alienated adult children. Last Wednesday, Rush paid homage to this less well-known Australian genius as part of the 92Y’s long-running film screening and discussion series, “Reel Pieces.” Rush, director Schepisi, and Schepisi’s daughter Alexandra, who has a featured role in the film, were interviewed before a live audience by Dr. Annette Insdorf, the head of undergraduate film studies at Columbia University. Bon Mots Geoffrey Rush on Patrick White: "Here was somebody writing about the Australian landscape and the Australian psyche with big, bold, fat novels." Fred Schepisi on White’s characters: "Patrick White believes that everyone is an actor, that you’re one way with your family, another way with your friends, another way with your work colleagues. You present all those different faces to the world." Geoffrey Rush on Australian films of the 1970s: "There were a lot of pioneering films. Guys used to have to be on horseback with their shirts off, with picks." Fred Schepisi on his cast: "It was a great collaboration, and by the end I really did love them all."
