Goshen, Indiana is home to a private college without an American Football team - and, most recently, a semi-professional soccer club that serves as an - albeit unusual - case study for how grassroots soccer in the U.S. can thrive and build a community. The overarching theme of The Assistant Professor is that football is not merely about goals and stars. It is, done properly, a participatory culture, an identity-forging community and even a political space. And to experience any of these aspects, it takes an active role of and for fans. That is possible, most easily, in local clubs. In a nutshell: support your local club. No country's soccer culture makes this vision harder than the U.S.'s - but perhaps no country has greater potential. How does a soccer club get born, in this culture? And can one bring the beautiful game and a local community together so it forges identity beyond stars and goals?Henrique Eichenberger will take us through the particular case study of Goshen. He is from Brazil, he played for and studied at the university I teach at, and he founded  Goshen City FC in 2022.HELPFUL LINKS FOR TODAY'S EPISODE:Goshen City FCGoshen College AthleticsThe Record, "GCFC Gears Up for Second Season"Goshen City FC (Facebook)R.E.M. - "Orange Crush" (Youtube video)Young Wonder - Orange (Youtube Video)Gilbert Becaud - L'Orange (Youtube video)Please leave a quick voicemail with any feedback, corrections, suggestions - or just greetings - HERE. Kimber enjoyed an active, nature-filled upbringing despite being born with a terminal transverse defect, resulting in an underdeveloped right hand. Her parents, particularly her supportive father, encouraged her to pursue her interests. Kimber's mother, who overcame a brain tumor and Cushing's disease, was initially worried but hopeful for Kimber's future. Her father focused on finding activities in which Kimber could excel. ⁣ At 28, a breakup led Kimber and a friend to join the Mountaineers club, where they trained in rock climbing, glacier travel, and ice climbing. This training culminated in climbing Mount Olympus, the Tooth, and Mount Rainier within nine days. This transformative experience shifted her focus to climbing, leading her to become a semi-professional athlete while continuing her teaching career. Her heartbreak became the catalyst for a decade-long climbing journey supported by sponsors like North Face. ⁣ Her supportive parents initially struggled with guilt and uncertainty about their child's future but now take pride in Kimber's achievements, following her journey through social media. Kimber is actively involved with the Mountaineers, having progressed from a skeptical reception due to her disability to becoming the chair of the committee. She continues to lead and mentor climbers, travel internationally, and plan future climbs, including personal milestones like getting married. Looking ahead, Kimber aims to tackle more significant climbs worldwide, including returning to Alaska. She is passionate about exploring and pushing the boundaries of what is possible for adaptive climbers.

Welcome to Episode 66 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring Ellie Pell, aka Gazzellie, a semi-professional distance runner and Manager of the Skratch Labs Cafe in Boulder, Colorado. Ellie is probably best known as a trail and ultra runner, with several wins and podiums under her belt, but she also is a fierce road marathoner! She qualified for the Olympic marathon trials in 2019, ran the trials in 2020, and is still feeling the pull of the road marathon while in the thick of training for this year's Leadville 100. I'm excited to see what she tackles next! Ellie and I had a long chat about so many different things in her life that I won't even attempt to summarize it here. But suffice to say, her diet and her relationship with food and body have evolved dramatically since she started running in her early 20s. I really appreciated how open she was in sharing the difficult details of her eating disorder history and recovery. We spend a good chunk of time on that, so please skip past that section if you need to do so. There are plenty of other great parts to this interview, and no shortage of laughter! Thanks Ellie for coming on the show - I know it was a dream come true for you (LOL). I wish you all the best in your upcoming races! P.S. Speedy is a former Semi Professional football player, a personal development coach, an author, a brand ambassador, an entrepreneur, and the host of his very own podcast The Speedy Tribe Podcast. Speedy was born and raised in Passaic, New Jersey where he experienced drugs and violence. These experiences gave speedy the drive he needed in order to break his family's generational curses and that started with football. Speedy played football as a child all the way into college where he received his bachelors degree. He even played semi pro football. After months in isolation and working on self, Speedy knew football was not his purpose. Through several experiences in his young adult life, Speedy knew he was different. He knew he was positively impacting people's lives. This led him to become a personal development coach where he does speaking engagements and 1 on 1 consultations. The second bye round is finally upon us and it's every bit as hard as we expected, but even more so with some of the recent hits that many SuperCoaches have copped via TLT and recent injuries, suspensions, the fun never stops!  Joe Fitz and Catfish are joined by special guest, the Daily Telegraph's very own fashionista, Rob Sutherland! We take a typically humorous look at this week, going through the injury wrap, dissect the teamlists and discuss plenty of key players and we go again with this week's Swysh SuperCoach Star of the Round! We also play a game, and Rob gets to take revenge on behalf of Tom Sangster from a few weeks ago.  Strategy-wise, we look at how to really consider Round 17 and 18 together with trades this week, and planning ahead for Round 18 coverage with post-Origin hijinks inevitable (remember Round 14?!). We also think about where the biggest opportunities are for the catching up bulk points, and also how that might affect your trade strategy for the rest of the season.  Timestamps if you want to jump ahead: Injury wrap - 5 min 23s Teamlist Takeaways: 16 min 42s Who Am I?: 41 min 11s Swysh SuperCoach Star of the Week: 49 min 19s Strategy Chat: 53 min 26s Thank you as always for your kind reviews and ratings, we really appreciate them all! In 1962, the US Armor Association launched a competition for the design of a next generation of Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) to replace the M60 Gun Tank in light of advanced Soviet vehicles which were being developed. The goal was to gather ideas as to how people thought the tanks of 1965-1975 might look and left the various designers a lot of freedom in terms of armament and propulsion. Many designs were sent in from around the world but one very close to home came from a serving US soldier, David Bredemeir, based at Fort Knox, the home of the US School of Armor at the time. This design was to eschew conventional suspension, layout, and armament and produce a missile carrier capable of destroying any future Soviet threat. Named the ‘M-70’ (no connection to the MBT-70), presumably for the anticipated in-service date, this vehicle provides a semi-professional glimpse at some of the thinking of the era. These include but are not limited to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, Fibromyalgia, Hot flashes, Hormonal imbalances, Vertigo/Dizziness, Digestive disturbances, Insomnia, Migraine headaches, Stress, Balance disorders and the list goes on. He also utilizes whole food nutritional supplementation, detoxification protocols, oxygen therapy, brain based therapies and non-surgical spinal decompression. Dr. Wachtmann has over 23 years experience working with newborns to the elderly, professional athletes (The Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies), professional musicians, other health care providers and was the team physician for his local Semi-Professional football team (The Lehigh Valley Steelers) for three years. They won the championship all three of those years. Dr. Wachtmann chose to be a Chiropractor because it is holistically oriented and focuses on fixing problems, NOT simply masking symptoms. Chiropractic is a huge pathway toward health and wellness. It is true, “health care,” not “sickness care.” One of the keys to being truly healthy is to maintain your health and not wait until it fails before you do something about it. Dr. Wachtmann finds helping patients with their current health challenges and educating them toward a healthier and better future to be extremely satisfying.

How a Crutch May Take You from Hindered to Health

What is your crutch? I mean, we all have them. Multiple-crutches in fact. The coffee that helps you wake up in the morning for example. A small crutch to support you in moving yourself into the day. Since becoming a blogger/podcaster I have started to find analogies in the most unexpected places. I've been playing quite a bit of Fifa 17 over the past few weeks. It's the first Fifa game I've played since 2003 (a lot has changed). Learning to play reminded me that we use crutches all the time. You start on 'Beginner', then there is 'Amateur', 'Semi-Professional', 'Professional', 'World-Class', and 'Legendary'. Once I started winning 9-0 every game on Beginner it was time to move up a level. Then the same happened again and I moved up to Semi-Professional, and so on. It's of little value staying at beginner because it proves nothing. Each crutch serves a purpose; to assist you towards the next level. This until (if it's your desire and you're willing to put in the hours of deliberate improvement), you will make your way to the very top rung. The Big Bad Crutch The word 'crutch' is usually talked about as a negative thing. Unhealthy behaviours that people use to cope with things in the wrong way. It's a word often used to describe dependency and addiction. I think we sometimes fail to see where a crutch is a good thing in life. Something that assists, supports, and makes easier whatever it is we want to do. That's the purpose of a physical crutch if you break your leg. It takes the weight off the broken bone and allows you to continue moving, albeit with a little difficulty at first. When I move to the next level on Fifa I usually get beaten a couple of times before I find my feet and step up to the new pace. It is a temporary support to enable improved functioning. We can use this truth to make a big difference in our lives as gentle rebels. Recognise and seek out crutches that will help take us onward to the next level. In this episode of the podcast I talk about some of my own crutches and how they've helped me. We also think about the dangers of letting a crutch take control beyond its allotted deadline or outside of the boundaries we set. And I share how I've come to see the terms 'introvert' and 'highly sensitive person' as particular crutches. And what that means for those of us who identify with those traits. Over to You Can you think of a crutch in your own day to day life? What does it support and make possible? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please leave your response in the comments below. This allows you to communicate your support for the show and encourage me to remain consistent in the creation of this content and in constantly seeking to take it to the next level. I am so incredibly thankful to those of you who continue to listen every week and for those of you decide to show your support by becoming a Patreon supporter (list of supporters here).
