The federal Liberals and NDP are attempting to negotiate a national pharmacare program in order to keep their political alliance alive and prevent a snap election. Is that a sound basis for a program securing pharmaceuticals for Canadians dealing with a need for medications including significant, even life-threatening illness? Would a national pharmacare program be funded sufficiently that the newest and most effective drugs for cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other serious illnesses become and/or remain available, or would a pharmacare bureaucracy be underfunded or over-regulated to the point pharmaceutical companies would not make the most recent and effective/expensive drugs available to Canada and Canadians? Today's podcast: Federal Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault is attempting to walk back his statement "there will be no more envelopes from the federal government to enlarge thed road network" to a Montreal conference earlier in the week. Also stated the federal government wants to get Canadians out of our cars and trucks and living in high density urban areas. Premiers Ford and Smith immediately challenged Gilbeault. - Also the Liberals rebranded the 'Climate Action Incentive Rebate' as the 'Canada carbon rebate.' Guilbeault is also hinting at changes to be announced concerning his energy dictates for provinces, as what he has proposed is receiving heavy pushback from particularly Alberta and Saskatchewan. Trudeau government continues to claim 80% of Canadian households paying the carbon tax will receive more money in rebates than they pay for carbon taxation. Not so according to Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux in interviews with us. Guest: Dan McTeague. President: Canadians for Affordable Energy. Guest: Professor Sylvain Charlebois, Director Agri Foods Lab at Dalhousie University This was a heaveily debated issue 30+ years ago and it's back. NDP sponsored children's rights legislation, Bill 273, would ban spanking of children at home or using force on children at school by supervisory adults (teachers) received support for a second reading in parliament by a 208-115 vote. The Canadian Teachers Federation opposes the NDP bill/ What about parents? And how does a prominent criminal lawyer view the proposed legislation? (It has been argued parents forcing a child into a children's car seat might run afoul of no corporal punishment legislation.) Guest: Ari Goldkind. Criminal lawyer and media commentator. You may find more of his work and a great podcast at: https://shawnwhatley.com/ Dr. Whatley spoke with Barry about why the right must talk about the morality of gender-affirming care, assisted suicide. Why are we so reluctant to speak about morality in these very serious issues? Dr. Whatley's recent book, When Politics Comes Before Patients: Why and How Canadian Medicare is Failing, has this to say, “Successive governments, regardless of political stripe, know all too well that Canada's system of health care is one of the defining characteristics of "being a Canadian", and any changes deemed harmful will have them thrown out of power. Thus, decades of cuts around the margins, centralized control, federal/provincial infighting, and government oversight has left doctors and hospitals with little input on how your health dollars are allocated and spent. Citizens are being left to languish in pain for months, sometimes years, because the current cost and delivery system is programmed for the benefit of governments staying in power. That was not what was intended. Medicare should be about delivering high-quality and timely healthcare value for Canadians.” Please note the views expressed by the individual(s) in this video are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views or principles of the First Freedoms Foundation.

CBC chief executive officer Catherine Tait has said in an effort to "stay relevant," Canada's state broadcaster will be pivoting away from traditional radio and television broadcasts and adopting a streaming model. Except she offered no concrete plans for such a transition and said it won't happen within the next decade. In the same interview, Tait took aim at Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre's pledge to defund CBC, accusing him of "CBC bashing" and taking aim at the belief that CBC is a "mouthpiece for the Liberal government." True North's Andrew Lawton says CBC can't stay relevant when it is already irrelevant to most Canadians, who have to keep footing the bill for a service they don't use. Also, Justin Trudeau is giving provinces $46 billion more in healthcare transfers over the next decade, which premiers aren't happy with but are taking anyway. Former Ontario Medical Association president Dr. Shawn Whatley joins the show to discuss whether this money could be the cure for what's ailing Canadian healthcare. Learn more about your ad choices. Structural geology professor, Dr. Alexander Peace talks to Scott about the scale of the shocks which hit Niagara. The balloon that grabbed everyone's attention as it drifted over Montanna has been shot down, once it drifted into a safe location. Was it primarily for spying? Does China's story check out? The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson: The government has withdrawn a controversial amendment to its proposed firearm legislation — one that critics warned could have restricted access to hunting rifles. On a cold – and for some, snowy – day like this, those who can hunker down inside with their Netflix and their YouTubes are likely to do so. But soon there may be changes coming that affect those services and any streaming enjoyers in Canada. What does that all mean for us? Here to join us on Hamilton Today while he is in Hamilton today, is Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh! The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson: Scott feels insulted by a comment the Prime Minister made the other day about protesters in Hamilton. Scott also thinks he was insulting Hamilton by talking down to you. Staying local, Hamilton politicians voted in favour of a pair of actions designed to protect the city's housing supply. On Wednesday, city councillors approved a new vacant homes tax to discourage speculators and hopefully open up empty units for rentals amid a housing crunch. Lou Piriano of the Realtors Association of Hamilton-Burlington calls it communism, On February 7th, Prime Minister Trudeau will join the Premiers to discuss health funding… this stems from the retreat held in Hamilton. Is it cause for optimism? Dr. Shawn Whatley has some nuanced opinions to share with Scott. And of course we welcome back Scott Radley, after his well-earned vacation! More on the developing and increasing crisis in Canada's healthcare system as 5 million Canadians have no family physician. Why has healthcare deteriorated to the extent Canadians are dying under-cared for, or while simply waiting for the most basic of care, including in hospital E.R.'s? Are the government's plans to permit 500,000 newcomers annually by 2025 realistic? In Toronto 8 teen girls between the ages of 13-16 are charged with second-degree murder in the swarming death of a 59 year old homeless man in December. According to police the girls met on social media and congregated downtown on a Saturday night. - Six teen boys have been charged in a swarming attack which left two store employees injured last November. This after the teens had been told to leave a retail outlet after causing a disturbance. And in Toronto an elderly woman was allegedly pushed to the pavement yesterday hitting her head. For years, Canada's healthcare system has been plagued by long wait times, high costs, and uneven access, with few bold solutions on offer because of politicians' and governments' ideological commitment to the status quo, even in the face of facts. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated some of these issues, in particular surgical backlogs and cancellations. In this special edition of The Andrew Lawton Show, we do a deep dive into the problems facing Canadian healthcare – and some solutions – with a panel of experts who know the system well. Joining the discussion are Dr. Shawn Whatley, author of "When Politics Comes Before Patients" and former Ontario Medical Association president; Medpoint Healthcare Centre president Alex Hanham; and Joanna Baron, executive director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation, which is representing Vancouver's Cambie Surgery Centre in an ongoing healthcare access lawsuit. The concept of vaccine passports, which would entail providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination to gain access to normally accessible venues and services, has ignited a fierce debate in Canada. What are the benefits and trade offs associated with the policy? Would it successfully encourage vaccine uptake among those hesitant to get their jabs? What unforeseen consequences might spring up from such a policy? To make sense of the utility of and challenges associated with vaccine passports, MLI Domestic Policy Program Director Aaron Wudrick spoke with Drs. Martha Fulford and Shawn Whatley.

After failing to gain traction from the the "lurking Stephen Harper" and "scary social conservative" tropes, the Liberals are now accusing Erin O'Toole of planning to privatize healthcare based on a video clip so deceptively edited even Twitter has labeled it "manipulated media." True North's Andrew Lawton says this is a sign of a Liberal campaign lacking a clear and coherent message, or even any message at all. Also, Conservative leader Erin O'Toole is facing criticism after backtracking on his pledge to protect conscience rights for healthcare practitioners. Dr. Shawn Whatley joins the show to explain why conscience rights matter. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the latest episode of MLI's Pod Bless Canada, MLI Senior Fellow Dr. Shawn Whatley speaks with Dr. Martha Fulford, associate professor of infectious diseases at McMaster University, about how Canadian policy makers have handled the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Fulford describes a mindset that has taken hold and has not evolved since the early days of the pandemic, when the country was understandably locked down in the face of an unknown threat. "There are still some people who seem to feel that this is a deadly virus for anyone who might get it," says Dr. Fulford, when it remains a serious threat mostly to the elderly, which is where our focus should be. "I thought we could have talked about a targeted approach. We didn't do a very good job," says Dr. Fulford. She urges policy makers to base their pandemic plans on past experience with this pandemic and previous ones, with the following priorities: - Protect the most vulnerable, primarily the frail elderly - Focus on where the virus is really being transmitted, hot spots where front line workers are living - Build surge capacity into the health care system - Don't destroy the fabric of our society in the effort Dr. Fulford stresses that schools have not caused high levels of transmission and students need to return to class as soon as possible. "The impact on our children with school closures is going to be felt for their entire lifetimes," she says. "COVID has clearly had a devastating impact, but our response to it has been also very devastating," adds Dr. Fulford. "It's not really economy versus health, it's really health versus heath. ... We mustn't forget that there are many other aspects of public health that have been neglected."
The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Hamiltonians from all wards have joined together to launch a community group to change who sits around the City Council table. The stated goal of IELECT Hamilton is “New Leadership for a better Hamilton,” and organizers want to see new leaders sitting at City Council following the 2022 municipal election by supporting initiatives that increase voter turnout and provide education around key civic issues. GUEST: Graham Crawford, Spokesperson for iElect Hamilton - The Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s Provincial COVID Misery Index compares the performance of Canada's provinces in protecting the health and prosperity of their citizens during the pandemic. Provinces with higher scores have felt more misery, including from the spread of sickness and death from the disease itself, slow or poor responses by government, economic decline, increased public debt, and lost jobs. Three main categories capture the Disease Misery, Response Misery, and Economic Misery impacts in each province by measuring performance across 11 key metrics. MLI’s Provincial COVID Misery Index is the only tool available that comprehensively measures and compares the short- and long-term consequences for the well-being of Canadians during this challenging time. GUEST: Dr. Shawn Whatley, Senior Fellow with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and Former President of the Ontario Medical Association - Canadians’ attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccines suggest hesitancy and its societal consequences are not limited to the choices of newly minted parents. Recent surveys in Canada, and globally, show many of us are hesitant about vaccines that have been produced with such herculean effort and enormous cost. So many, in fact, that the immunization thresholds required to tame COVID-19 are under threat. This hesitancy has been described in detail, and linked to people's politics, past community traumas and attitudes towards science and industry. However, just what to do about it has been less clear. While most Canadians will say yes to COVID-19 vaccines, many of us also know a friend or a family member who is, at least for the moment, saying no. So how can better conversations help reduce vaccine hesitancy for all shots? Canada's healthcare system is the proverbial third-rail of the country's politics. Yet despite no one wanting to touch the issue, there is a body of evidence supporting the idea that the system is broken, as evidenced by wait times, rationed care, and a lack of patient choice. Much of this is a product of politics, Dr. Shawn Whatley writes in his new book, "When Politics Comes Before Patients". Dr. Whatley joins True North's Andrew Lawton to explain what's wrong with the system – and how to fix it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Libby Znaimer is joined, first, by Ontario Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk, followed by Ontario Minister of Long Term Care, Dr. Merrilee Fullerton and, after that, by Dr. Shawn Whatley, former President of the OMA. Yesterday, Bonnie tabled the 2019 auditor general's report. The report details that long-term care homes in the province are not following a consistent plan of care for residents. It also found that the food provided at long-term care homes aren't always up to standard when it comes to nutritional value and quality. When it comes to hospital care, the report reveals that of the one million patients discharged over the course of a year, 67-thousand of them were harmed during treatment. Libby and guests discuss. Listen live, weekdays from noon to 1, on Zoomer Radio!
Libby Znaimer is joined by Shachi Kurl, Executive Director, Angus Reid Institute, Dr. Gerald Batist, Director of the Segal Cancer Centre at Montreal's Jewish General Hospital, and Shawn Whatley, Munk Senior Fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. Together, they discuss Canadian Cancer Drug Shortages and an Angus Reid Poll finds more than 2 million Canadians over the age of 55 face significant barriers when accessing the health care system in their province, such as long waits to see a family doctor - if they have one - or lengthy wait-times for surgery, diagnostic tests, and specialist visits.
Shawn Whatley - President of Ontario Medical Association joins ON Point to discuss the courts upholding the policy that doctors must refer patients for assisted death.
Ontario Medical Association President Dr. Shawn Whatley talks about the problems with our system.
