Alberty, M., Mayr, W., & Bersch, I. (2023). Nick Dempsey is an Australian disability advocate, motivational speaker, and content creator whose life changed dramatically after a diving accident on his 21st birthday left him with a spinal cord injury and quadriplegia. While celebrating with friends at his parents’ home, he misjudged a dive into a shallow backyard pool, dislocating his neck upon impact. "Just after talking about how good my mates are, they broke my neck and then went down to the pub..." Nick has since become a powerful voice in the disability community. He shares his journey candidly on platforms like TikTok and through his podcast “Chats From A Chair,” where he explores life with a disability and broader issues of representation and accessibility. In an episode of the ListenABLE podcast, Nick discussed his lived experience and the innovative solutions he’s developed to maintain independence—including an adaptive drinking glove he designed himself. He also speaks openly about the mental health challenges and relationship dynamics that come with life post-injury. Nick’s efforts go beyond advocacy. He has become a registered marriage celebrant, further proving that life after injury can still be filled with purpose, creativity, and connection. His story highlights the importance of normalising disability through storytelling, embracing vulnerability, and finding strength in community. Want to support Nick? Check our the links below! After a truly inane discussion about ‘back slashes' vs ‘forward slashes', the guys discuss the career of the late Christopher Reeve and the recent documentary on his life ‘Superman / Man' (2:41). They discuss Reeve's early career, his studies at Julliard and his iconic role as Superman. They then discuss his tragic horseback riding accident and how he was left with significant spinal cord injuries. They then talk about his advocacy work in the latter part of his life and his death in 2004. They then give their thoughts on the documentary itself.    Then Ali asks Asif in more detail about spinal cord injuries (30:19). Asif starts of with defining spinal cord injuries and how common they are. He then talks about the causes, symptoms and the immediate treatment.  Ali then asks Asif about the prognosis and long term treatment. Finally, Asif discusses promising new experimental treatments for spinal cord injury.  The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells which can differentiate into multiple cell types. MSCs can be isolated from the bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, adipose tissue, muscle, and dental pulp. However, the use of these MSCs involves a number of barriers. Human umbilical cord is limited to collection at birth. Bone marrow and fat biopsy are painful and requires general anesthesia. If only there was an easily obtainable method to collect these MSCs, like maybe even once a month, collectable in a little cup, without biopsy. WHAT… use menstrual blood you say?! Menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) were first described by Meng et al. in 2007, as a novel source of MSCs. Most of the MenSC are produced by the endometrium. With the potential of multi-directional differentiation, this has spurred a list of preclinical and animal studies looking into the collection of menstrual blood for MSC processing. Men SCs have been investigated for use in Alzheimer's disease, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Type I DM, wound healing, endometriosis therapy, infertility, and even Muscular Dystrophy. Is there a miracle med in menses? Listen in for details.

In this podcast, I am joined by Susan Mockler to discuss her harrowing experience of traumatic spinal cord injury, which she narrated in 'Fractured'. This is her memoir that detailed her experiences with acquired disability following a car accident which left her with a spinal cord injury. She recalls how she sustained a cervical spinal injury as the front seat passenger of a car that hit a moose, and the devastating near-total paralysis that followed. She also explored her emotional response to the injury, and the mental attitude she adopted to help her through a reasonably successful, and on-going rehabilitation. Susan Mockler is a writer and retired clinical psychologist living in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Her essays and stories have a appeared in a range of American and Canadian publications.

In this episode, I explore the two catastrophic forms of traumatic neurological injury, brain and spinal cord. I discuss the life-changing physical consequences of traumatic neurological injury, and the equally harrowing but often invisible emotional fallouts. I particularly highlight the often incomprehensible ways by which neurological injuries result – from riding horses and diving into pools, to boat and road traffic accidents. I illustrate the diverse features of traumatic brain injury with prominent historical cases which highlight its causes and manifestations and complications. One is the case of Phineas Gage, as described by Antonio Damasio in his classic book 'Descarte's Error'. Damasio narrated the astonishing head injury Gage sustained when a tamping rod penetrated his head when he was setting charges as part of his railroad work, a case that demonstrates the impact of traumatic brain injury on personality and judgement.I also use more recent graphic patient memoirs, such as those of Cathy Crimmins titled 'Where is the Mango Princess', to portray the diverse dimensions of traumatic brain injury, and that of Melanie Reid titled 'The World I Fell Out Of', to show the mechanism and devastation of traumatic spinal cord injury. I also discuss the modern acute management of neurological injury, the short- and long-term complications, and the arduous rehabilitation process that follows.

In this "Ask the Expert" episode, Dr. GG deFiebre of SRNA was joined by Dr. Rebecca Martin, who detailed the mechanism and benefits of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (TSS). Dr. Martin explained how TSS, a non-invasive method, aims to amplify spinal cord excitability and improve neurological functions like movement and sensation [00:01:25]. She contrasted TSS with implanted spinal stimulators, noting their respective applications and advantages [00:02:34]. Dr. Martin shared the promising outcomes of TSS in clinical trials, emphasizing its potential for widespread clinical use, and she urged patients to inquire about it at their clinics [00:05:42]. The True Grit Spinal Cord Injury (TG SCI) program is a post-acute, community-based, rehabilitation program that aims to provide hope, healing, and inspiration to adolescents and young adults aged 16-21 with SCI. As a collaborative effort between Rutgers University and RWJ Barnabas Health Children's Specialized Hospital (CSH), the long-term goal of the TG SCI program is to develop a comprehensive community reintegration pathway for young adults with SCI, supporting them throughout the transition to adulthood by single day events, community building, and a residential summer camp each year. On this week's episode of the QP, I had the opportunity to speak with Kassandra Boyd, and Keara McNair. Both are occupational therapists by trade, and have been with TG SCI from day one. I was blown away by how comprehensive their program is, and I think you will be too! Please stay tuned to the very end, for a special public service announcement regarding the John McAleavey Jr. Fund.

Quality of Methylene Blue is Imperative; Research: Red Light Therapy's Effect on Vitamin D & Blood Glucose Levels

There are undeniable health benefits when it comes the methylene blue; most notably, its profound impact on the mitochondria. Secondary to that, people are understandably going to be excited and compelled to seek out a methylene blue supplement to start accruing those advantages. And as with any supplement... the quality matters! When it comes to the quality of methylene blue for human consumption, it is incredibly imperative. The fact of the matter is that supplements can say that they utilize USP grade methylene blue, yet the lab results still show heavy metals — like mercury, lead and others — can still be higher than what you want to put in your body. I discuss this issue, which is likely more prevalent than we would all like to believe. However, it does verify the high-quality, ultra-pure methylene blue and leucomethylene blue that is sourced for BioBlue products. I also cover two very interesting photobiomodulation research articles that look at unique aspects, and potential benefits, of red light therapy that have not been discussed before. The first article looks at osteoporosis in individuals with complete spinal cord injuries. However, the profound takeaway from that study is about serum vitamin D levels. The second study sheds light on photobiomodulation's impact on blood glucose levels. If more research can verify what was found, the demand for red light therapy will skyrocket (via pre-diabetics and diabetics). If you found the information in today's episode particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. More than any other episode in our 275 plus now, this one hits home for me and is the most personal version of me you are likely ever to get on the show. If you've listened to our commercials over the month of September, you should already be familiar with the UnSeen/UnHeard Anthology on Kickstarter, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new comic short stories about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. I fall into both those camps and rarely get to chat with comics creators who do so it should be no surprise that I'm excited to talk with today's first time guests, co-editors Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter. The challenges that creators with disabilities face is numerous, I've personally turned down quite a few comics projects as a colorist I'd love to have worked on because I didn't want to commit and ultimately let people down and regular listeners will know that from time to time I have to take a break and Jimmy kindly makes sure to keep us on a regular release schedule here on the podcast. These are our stories and this is a unique window into a rare opportunity many disabled creators have to tell them. Please consider backing the project at the link below. unSEEN/unHEARD Anthology on Kickstarter Need a PFP? Make sure to hit up Lane Lloyd Synopsis From the editors that brought you Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom vol. 1 and the Ringo-nominated creator of Etheres comes unSEEN/unHEARD: Disability & Neurodivergence, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new slice of life, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror short comics about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent.   It was vital to us that stories about neurodivergent people and those with disabilities be told by people with those conditions. Similarly, creators with these conditions often find it difficult to make comics consistently, from financial barriers to constant interruptions to the creative process because their energy must go to simply...existing. As such, we wanted to produce this anthology to give those who might not usually get to tell their stories a platform to do so.  The anthology covers a wide spectrum of conditions: AuDHD, Ankylosing Spondilitis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Dyslexia, Spinal Cord Injury, Misophonia associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Blindness, Fibromyalgia, CPTSD, and more. Furthermore, intersectionality and representation of other marginalized communities is a pillar of Unseen Alchemy Publishing. As such, expect to see 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC representation in our stories.  Anas Abdulhak, Aubrey Lyn Jeppson, and C.K. Carpenter comprise the editorial team. All three of us either have a disability ourselves or are neurodivergent, which was important to us in the formation of this anthology. All three have experience running crowdfunding campaigns: Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter produced the first volume of Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom, and Anas Abdulhak has handled campaigns for such comics as Kill My Boyfriend and Objects in the Mirror. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. Jesi Stracham is the founder of Wheel With Me Foundation and co-developer of the Wheel With Me Adapt Fit app, designed to support the independence and fitness of wheelchair users. After a motorcycle accident in 2015 resulted in a spinal cord injury, Jesi turned her experience into a platform for motivation and empowerment, and set on a mission to inspire the world to live life to its fullest. She also co-owns Freedom Longevity & Wellness LKN in Lake Norman, North Carolina. Today, Jesse Stracham shares her journey from a tumultuous childhood to becoming a beacon of resilience and empowerment. Despite not being a dad, Jesse's story resonates deeply with themes of accountability, personal growth, and the relentless pursuit of one's best self. She opens up about growing up in a family involved in the trucking industry and the lack of guidance that led her to make precarious choices as a teenager. Her life took a dramatic turn when she was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, forcing her to confront her vulnerabilities and redefine her sense of self. Jesse's candid recounting of her struggles with physical limitations, mental health, and the journey to regain her independence is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. She discusses her transformation through fitness and nutrition, highlighting the power of proper diet and exercise in managing her condition. Her involvement with Adaptive CrossFit, the impact of the 75 Hard program, and her advocacy for better nutritional awareness underscore her insights into the importance of mental resilience, personal accountability, and the role of faith in her recovery. www.thedadedge.com/friday164 www.1stphorm.com/dadedge www.thedadedge.com/alliance   Jesi Stracham
