You're praised for your strength — but at what cost? You're taught to push through — but when do you finally get to breathe? You're carrying the weight of generations — but no one stops to ask: where do you go to put it down? In the second of our three-part series on Superwoman Syndrome, mindfulness coach and TEDx speaker Asia Whittedsteps forward to share the truths many Black women have been forced to navigate in silence. Through her own breaking points, Asia learned what few are willing to say out loud: "Rest isn't something you earn — it's something you deserve before the world demands more than you can give." Inside this powerful episode: Asia's personal story of reaching burnout while juggling family, career, grief, and expectations — and the moment she realized survival wasn't enough Why generations of Black women have internalized the belief that peace is a luxury, not a right How unchecked strength culture quietly conditions women to feel guilty for needing rest The emotional and physical warning signs Asia teaches high-achieving women to recognize before burnout takes over Why thriving — not just surviving — requires a radical mindset shift around responsibility, rest, and community care A deep look into Asia's "PAUSE" framework, designed to help women rebuild their lives around intention, boundaries, and self-awareness As Asia shares, "If I crumble, what happens to all the people I'm trying to carry?" And even more powerfully: "The only thing I was letting go of was myself — and that was never the plan." This isn't self-care for Instagram. This is the conversation Black women have needed for generations — about grief, healing, thriving, and reclaiming our own well-being on our own terms. I see so many women live life overwhelmed and burned out and I wish they knew that rest was a requirement and not a reward; that slowing down to find calm should be a priority. YOU are a priority, in your home with your family as well in your business. My job is to teach you practical ways to incorporate a pause in your daily life so you can be calm in the midst of chaos and high demands.
The life they taught her to build almost took her with it. For decades, Katina Barnes poured into families, mentored girls, launched programs, led ministries, and moved mountains with two-person teams. The world clapped. But no one asked what it cost. In this National Black Girl Month™ feature, Katina joins Felicia Ford and co-host Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown to name what many Black women are only starting to admit: that being “strong” is often a trap. That sometimes it takes collapsing in your own bed to realize what was never sustainable. That no matter how much good you're doing—you still deserve to live. This conversation is not a warning. It's a reckoning. If you've been performing strength while privately unraveling, If you've been told to push through while your body says no, If you've outgrown the expectations that once defined your worth— this episode is where you lay it down. You'll hear: How burnout disguises itself as achievement Why letting go of control isn't failure—it's survival What real boundaries sound like when they're held, not explained How to model wellness for the next generation without apology Why “being needed” can no longer be the measure of your value This is not about doing less. It's about doing what's yours to carry—and no more.
Why are Black women still expected to carry everything without complaint? They keep telling Black women to be strong, to push through, to hold it all together. But what they never address is the damage that message leaves behind—mentally, physically, emotionally. The burnout, the silence, the pressure to succeed at the expense of our well-being. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right and still paying too high a price, you're not imagining it. You're navigating systems that were never designed with your safety in mind. In this special National Black Girl Month™ episode, you're invited into a powerful conversation with Dr. Vanessa Perry, global thought leader, psychologist, and CEO of The Perry Group. Alongside Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown, we explore what Superwoman Syndrome actually costs Black women—and how to stop carrying what was never ours to begin with. This episode answers the unspoken questions so many Black women ask themselves: Why do I feel like success is wearing me down? Is it possible to lead without losing myself? How do I reclaim peace when the world expects performance? Dr. Perry shares insights from over 25 years of research and executive advising in Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, and high-level leadership spaces. Together, we discuss how to name the cycle, build supportive community, and create spaces—personally and professionally—where Black women no longer have to prove themselves to belong. This isn't just about workplace equity. It's about redefining what thriving looks like on our own terms. → Learn more and access your free toolkit at nationalblackgirlmonth.com → Join our virtual community: facebook.com/groups/nationalblackgirlmonth → Connect with Dr. Venessa Perry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/venessam/ → Connect with Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown: www.instagram.com/dr.rikesha → Connect with Felicia Ford: www.threads.net/@friendscallmefe Join Momentum Lab: https://lab.feliciafordandco.com About Dr. Venessa Perry: Dr. Venessa M. And now all of a sudden, I'm Marybeth. And I will tell you that probably for the first six months to a year, it was hard to meet someone new and say, Hi, I'm Dr. Crane. No, it's a Hi, I'm Marybeth. And I would have to change it because I didn't want to sound like some arrogant jerk. Oh, by the way, I'm a doctor. So it's a real thing. But you also start to think about who is Marybeth versus Dr. Crane, because Dr. Crane was like a different entity. In fact, my husband would tell me when I came home, could you turn the doctor off? Because I was running the practice and my name's first on the door, it's my way of the highway kind of thing. And you'd come home, and now you're a team. And I'm not the captain of the team necessarily every day. So in retirement, you start to actually be more your authentic self." Stress is often called the “silent killer” and can have serious consequences if not managed. It can also greatly affect quality of life. Today we speak with Dr. Gala Gorman, a licensed Acupuncturist, Naturopath, and Author who offers practical advice and programs to reverse health issues resulting from chronic stress. We cover common sources and mistakes many make in dealing with stress and what she terms “Kryptonite.” Many suppress symptoms of stress and start down the road of pain relievers, antacids and even food. This only disguises the pain. Dr. Gala says that stress mostly shows up in adrenal glands and gives some easy ways to manage toxic stressors that can be implemented with daily habits. The ability to "do it all" has been the expectation and standard for black women for generations. This unhealthy characteristic of attempting to "have it all together" is a bondage mechanism for women to look and appear to be perfect. Underneath this covering of what many would perceive as strength, lies a woman who suppresses her emotions, neglects her self-care, unwilling to ask for help, and always feels obligated to help others. This repeated behavior of sacrificing your well-being consistently will inevitably lead to multitude of stress related symptoms, strenuous relationships and a low quality of life. Even though this a word that many are familiar with, what really matters is where do we draw the line? How can women begin to disrupt the generational pattern of perfection, take off the superwoman cape and step into her superpower of designing a healthier way to show up for herself unapologetically? On this week's podcast episode, join me as I talk with psychotherapist & certified clinical trauma professional Cerita Yvonne, as she unpacks this trauma behind being superwoman, how it impacts the relationships you entertain and how to begin to dismantle this belief of having to do it all. Overcome Superwoman Syndrome: Prioritize, Say No and Get Help SUMMARY This episode is dedicated to all the superwomen out there who are trying to do it all and be it all. Host Tonya Leigh explains how many women find themselves in the predicament of trying to fulfill multiple roles such as being a career woman, mother, wife, friend, daughter and more while also trying to maintain high standards in each role. This is referred to as the Superwoman Syndrome, a term coined in the 1980s by Dr. Marjorie Hansen Chavez in her book The Superwoman Syndrome. Women may feel guilty or ashamed if they cannot meet their own expectations and feel like they need to do and be everything to everyone. The Superwoman Syndrome is a condition which leads to burnout, stress, and other negative health outcomes. People afflicted with the syndrome are not prioritizing their self care, playing, or resting, as they are too busy trying to live up to the expectations of others. To get out of the toxic cycle of the Superwoman Syndrome, one must understand the root of the fear and deal with it. Additionally, they must be willing to say no to things that are not important to them in order to help them focus on their most important priorities. Finally, they must acknowledge that this may mean disappointing some people, but it is necessary in order to take control of one's life. Here is what we cover in this episode: 0:00:00 Exploring the Superwoman Syndrome: A Conversation with Self-Image Coach Tonya Leigh 0:02:54 Understanding the Causes and Consequences of Superwoman Syndrome 0:04:34 Facing the Fear of Not Being Good Enough 0:09:25 Prioritizing and Saying No 0:13:37 Self Care, Saying No, and Being Imperfect 0:15:38 Tips for Entrepreneurs 0:17:57 The Benefits of Hiring Help: Taking Advantage of Available Resources Quotes: There's a thing where you can get a dog sitter. There are all these amazing apps with help at your fingertips, and yet a lot of you refuse to take advantage of it. Why? Why aren't you getting the help that you need? To overcome superwoman syndrome, you're going to have to be willing to be imperfect and to realize that it's a beautiful thing. Because that means you've accepted yourself as you are. And you're showing up in your most expansive self. And expansive does not mean perfect. Expansive means true. I'm not good enough, and I'm afraid of being found out. So let me put on this facade and pretend that I am perfect. This is what superwomen do. Even when you make mistakes, even when you fail, even when it's not all buttoned up and buttoned up and tidy, you're still extraordinary. You're still amazing. Let me tell you all, resentment is a telltale sign that you may be suffering from Superwoman Syndrome. So pay attention if you're feeling resentful or angry or frustrated on a daily basis. Those are three emotions that often indicate that you have this syndrome. Stay connected! Have you ever heard of Superwoman Syndrome? If you haven't, I'm sure you've felt it. Being a wife, a mom, an aunt, a sister, a leader of the PTA, a skilled educator managing classrooms, organizing playdates, birthday parties, and all the things in between, without spending time on you. In this episode, I'm chatting with Melanie Battles from Scholars for the Soul: An Educational Solutions Firm, where we discuss superwoman syndrome and how to remove the stigma so you can focus on yourself. How you can: take the cape off to focus on your own identity how not to feel resentful to those finding it easier to rest and reset How to be consistent in your commitment to your growth and rest. "Where are you trying to go and what does it take for you to get there? Setting that routine, setting your timers, if it's getting up before all your kids in the house. That was something big for me. I wanted to get up before everybody else started getting up, moving around, asking me for this, wanting to do that. I need to get up early so I can have time just for me. And when I did that, I was more patient with my children. When I did that, I had more patience for my husband because my cup was being filled. Not thinking that I just have to wake up and as soon as my feet hit the ground, I'm superwoman. No. Taking the cape off means I know I need to be filled, so let me schedule time within my day to fill my cup. Because I can't pour into my family, I can't pour into my students. I can't pour into my community if I don't have anything to pour." Women are superheroes and especially teachers! Without us, where would this world be? Over time this word “superheroes” has come with a bit of a price hasn't it? It's great to celebrate all that we do, but at the same time what about the real person inside who's craving some down time or the feeling to cut loose a bit. Being tagged as “superwoman” is a privilege, but it also seems to celebrate the fact that we expect women to handle numerous tasks at once. Many want to be recognized for the numerous ways they multitask, yet this just might be taking a bigger toll on them than they think. What if it's a big reason for struggling with weight? A lot of the times when it comes to multitasking all the time and having to process things at such a quick speed (as all teachers do), it leads to significant amounts of frustration, stress, burn out, and sometimes just finally “popping” because we can't take it anymore. This stress and heavy feeling on the shoulders automatically leads to extreme exhaustion, lack of sleep, depletion in hormone levels, non stop cravings, and sometimes mental breakdown. Is that something we want to celebrate? In this week's episode we will explore Superwoman Syndrome and the numerous ways it shows. There are numerous types, characteristics, and information on how to realistically slow down with the amount we're juggling every single day. On this week's podcast you will hear: Characteristics of Superwoman Syndrome Why teacher moms tend to take on more opportunities to help others How Superwoman Syndrome affects weight Upcoming FREE Masterclass about Superwoman Syndrome and strategies to put into place Featured on this week's podcast: Book your discovery call here to explore working with me to get clear on what's holding you back in your weight loss journey so that we can get you started on the process right away and feeling confident at the front of the classroom. Most of my life I relied on me. I didn't ask because people didn't offer.I was raised to never ask anyone for anything. And somehow, I became the person everyone went to to ask for advice, favors, help. I gave so much because I never wanted people to feel like I was untouchable. I had not yet learned boundaries. Because I had few boundaries, people took advantage. I positioned myself as a giver, I never allowed myself to be a receiver. I want to help you unlearn this toxic behavior so you can grow and prosper with ease and peace.

That unhealthy pressure to do it all and to be everything to everyone can be described as Superwoman Syndrome or Superman Complex, and this can lead to frustration and anxiety. Our friend Wendy Elover joins us to speak about how this irrational pursuit of perfection can become exhausting. Wendy is the Owner and Progress Partner at My Dreams in Motion Consulting, and she is the author of the book, My Cape is at the Cleaners: Choosing Happy Over Perfect. Are there unrealistic expectations you are trying to live up to? Wendy wants you to keep that cape at the cleaners. We ask her about the dreaded 4-letter word F-I-N-E. Being fine could mean that you don't want to go beyond your comfort zone. This is where you need to be intentional and choose not to settle. Be willing to be open and honest with yourself and welcome coaching.Wendy believes that fear can be ego driven. Your ‘Why' must be stronger than the fear you have. Fear cannot be bigger than what you need to accomplish, than your purpose. She also encourages her clients to celebrate along their journey toward their goals. Achieving a goal is fantastic, but it is even more impactful when you “become a person who is capable of achieving that goal”.To learn more about Wendy and to get a copy of her book entitled My Cape is at the Cleaners: Choosing Happy Over Perfect, visit www.wendyelover.comWhile you are there, Wendy has a special offering for our listeners: 8 Simple Ways to Supercharge Your Daily Motivation. --- more ---If you are looking to learn the art of audience engagement while listening for methods to conquer speaking anxiety, deliver persuasive presentations, and close more deals, then this is the podcast for you.Twins Talk it Up is a podcast where identical twin brothers Danny Suk Brown and David Suk Brown discuss leadership communication strategies to support professionals who believe in the power of their own authentic voice. Courage Queen- Christian Entrepreneur, Sales Confidence, Faith & Growth, Devotionals for Women
Welcome Courage Queen's! This week we are on a mission to radically redefine self love, self care, self esteem and boundaries. A balanced and fulfilled life is POSSIBLE- BUT there are things we MUST do in order to claim that type of living. Stop neglecting your physical, emotional, spiritual wellness and get on track because burnout isn't cute! Our guest this week is Coach Ama Brew, this is what she has to share with us and SOO much more. From Ama: "I know how it feels to be trying so hard to keep up on the outside but struggling with an intense inner turmoil on the inside. It's hard to admit that you don't have it all together when you think that being a Superwoman is what makes you worthy and empowered as a woman. As a teenager, I was a “big” kid with a loud mouth who never felt good enough. After high school, I had a personal encounter with God and knew from that moment on that my purpose was to empower women to maximize their potential and live purposeful lives.I went on to publish my first book at the age of 17 to share my experiences & to help empower teenage girls who also struggled with self-esteem. I obtained my B.A. in Psychology and my Masters in Organizational Leadership & Human Resources Management. All through my corporate career, I often coached the women who were struggling to find balance & purpose. But everything stopped when I had kids. I lost myself completely for years & was headed for complete burnout. This was because in my bid to be a virtuous woman, I neglected my emotional, spiritual, physical & psychological wellness. I kept thinking I should be happy – I have everything I have always wanted – a husband, kids, educational degrees – but I wasn't fulfilled because I always felt overwhelmed, tired, stressed, burnt-out and out of balance.I found my way back to a more balanced, fulfilled, productive & purposeful life and I'm now on a mission to help other struggling women do the same."Ama's Website: https://www.empoweredforbalance.com COURAGE QUEEN LINKS:Connect on Social www.instagram.com/couragequeenpodJoin the fabulous and free community of faith led women taking action on their dreams!- its our Podcast Community page :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/275631504657791/?ref=shareMake it a fabulous Week!
This week's episode of LITE It Up is a replay of a soulful conversation with Dr. Aginah Musherah and Necole K. Muhammad, LCSW about success, lessons learned in leadership and balance. As women ascend to leadership, often times she does so at the expense of her own well-being. The Super Woman Syndrome has causes so many of us to go through the motions each day on autopilot. During this time, we lose focus of who we are and the elements that make us women. We are busy pouring into others without replenishing ourselves. We discuss Necole's book, Green Panties, Ulcers & Corns and the anthology Soul Talk VOL. 3.
