Glenn walks through how he helps his clients overcome food addiction once and for all so they can reclaim control of their lives. Tune in today to learn how to quiet your “inner pig”.The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE:● [7:05] How did Glenn get into the psychology space and what's his history with overeating?● [9:33] What were the things that brought Glenn to a new paradigm?● [11:52] How does the brain work to make decisions?● [13:15] What were the survey results Glenn found when asking people what foods they tend to overeat or crave and the meanings behind those cravings?● [16:58] How true is it that food is made to be addictive and marketing is designed to get you to crave food?● [20:35] How do we know where the line is between an addictive relationship with food vs. really just enjoying food?● [23:54] Where does Glenn have clients start in healing their relationship with food?● [24:34] What are the two sets of thoughts that our mind has and how can you manage them?● [28:40] How do we identify the “inner pig” voice vs. other voices in our head?● [34:32] How long does it take for someone to get to tune out the “inner pig”?● [35:28] What are some other elements at play and how can we utilize those to overcome food addiction? ● [39:06] Glenn explains his analogy of a leaky fireplace.KEY TAKEAWAYS:● A great place to start when you are working to overcome binge eating/food addiction is to ask yourself “how do I eat in accordance with my own best judgment?” When you ask yourself this question and really listen, the answer will be clear. Your body will seek what is nutritious for it. ● As always when changing your habits, start small. Create one simple rule - what's the one thing you could do that wouldn't be too burdensome, that you could and would do, but it would still make a big difference and point you in the right direction. Examples: don't eat anything out of a bag, don't go back for seconds, only eat chocolate on the weekend.● When you find yourself in a moment of wanting to break your one small rule, do some breathwork. Breathe in for a count of 7, breathe out for a count of 11. This will engage your parasympathetic system so your body can rest and digest. QUOTES: “With 40% of the population obese...there's a very powerful outside force." - Glenn Livingston“When you encounter a variation in flavor in nature, that's also a potential signal that diverse micronutrients are available so you're more likely to keep eating. So they [food manufacturers] found they could get people to eat more if there's a very slight variation in flavor." - Glenn Livingston“We've spent so long following the rules of some plan out there that we also forget and have lost the connection to how we feel when we eat things.” - Jenn Trepeck"The way the brain works, it's not just as easy to start tomorrow." - Glenn Livingston“The core problem with food addiction is listening to your whims and impulses and emotions rather than your intellect.” - Glenn Livingston“You can only ever use the present moment to be healthy.” - Glenn LivingstonRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES: Never Binge Again WebsiteNever Binge Again FacebookNever Binge Again PodcastNever Binge Again YouTubeGlen Livingston's InstagramGlen Livingston's FacebookGlen Livingston's LinkedInGUEST BIO:Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. How can a platform relate to market research that can help them focus on making their dreams come true as an entrepreneur. They will touch on such topics as:Binge culture is driven by the need for constant stimulation.Because of binge culture, our brain is trained to be hyperstimulated by hyperpalatable concentration, which is designed to hit the bliss point in the brain without giving you the feeling of satisfaction.Business is about turning the wheel, not inventing the wheel. You need to focus on what's the one thing that cannot fall down. You have to be able to finance the loss to make the business work.Marketing is not much more than asking people what they want, how they want to talk about what they want, and delivering it.Recruit people who are mission-oriented rather than money-oriented, which helps your business to pave it all.Demonstration is the best form of proof. If you have a product that does its stuff, then demonstrate it to your clients.Hack: When you stop binging and disconnect yourself from electronics for a while, life seems boring, but if you do it and pick from the things that you need to focus on, it will make progress and that's where your dreams will come true. Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. Glen has sold $30M of marketing consulting services over the course of his career. Making decisions about how to eat healthier shouldn't be complicated or overwhelming. Glenn Livingston addresses common issues with establishing healthier eating habits and the power of autonomy to learn what approach to food works for you! In this episode, Cathy and Glenn discuss: Glenn's own journey with food and alpha wolf approach to eating Drawing clear lines between healthy and unhealthy eating behaviors Acknowledging how your inner reptilian brain impacts eating Examples of rules for eating healthier and eliminating the need for willpower Committing with perfection while forgiving yourself with dignity vs. guilt and shame Allowing yourself to learn something with every attempt, adjust and keep going Memorable Quotes: “I've discovered that autonomy is a very big part of food addiction.Whereas if they think for themselves, what is one simple rule that I can implement? That would make a really big difference that is not going to be too burdensome.” “If you want to eliminate the need for willpower, you could accomplish the same thing by saying I will only ever have chocolate on Saturdays and Sundays…that way your decisions are made…and you're not sweating out the willpower decisions all day long.” Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. What We Discuss In This Episode: In this intimate and frank discussion, Dr. Glenn shares changes he made in his life for the better. As a formerly obese psychologist who spent years working for the food industry in addition to seeing patients, he goes on to discuss some ideas on how to stop these patterns and how he changed his own trajectory and career path to help others like himself conquer these prevalent and unhealthy eating habits. He shares how you can stop eating chocolate before you kill someone – and then goes on to share his own personal story of his many years of food addictions, and how he changed his career to make the changes necessary for his own out-of-control eating habits. We go on to discuss why overeating, stress eating, and binge eating are so prevalent in not just our country, but many places around the world. You might ask, “Is ending overeating complicated.” Dr. Glenn shares how it’s a LOT simpler than it’s made out to be! He then goes on to share how we can make our own food plan by making 4 categories of rules: Always, Nevers, Conditionals, and Unrestricteds. He frankly and openly shares how he stopped overeating, stress eating, and/or binge eating so that he can help others to do the same - and then stick to ANY diet. He shares an alternative, albeit controversial approach to eating disorders that have proven itself time and time again. Free Resources from Dr. Glenn Livingston: www.NeverBingeAgain.com. Binge eating happens to all of us, whether due to addiction or emotional trauma. I’m joined by Dr. Glenn Livingston to talk about how he cured himself of binge eating by following four simple rules. About Dr. Glenn Livingston Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long-time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm that has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's) previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Indiana Star-Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or many other major media outlets. You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. Glenn is a regular blogger on Psychology Today. Designed to be Addictive As much as there is to say about trauma, stress, and emotional responses to blame binge eating on, Dr. Glenn Livingston opens this episode with an alternative reason: marketing and food production. Some foods are just designed and created to hit all our bliss points: salty, greasy, sweet, comforting, and, often, with something else added to increase our addiction. Glenn reveals that a former executive of a big brand confectionary company told him they took all the vitamins out of their product and spent that money on packaging. So if you’re ever feeling like you can’t control your binges, let’s just say you’re not alone. Big business wants you to binge. There are some people who find so much solace and comfort in binge eating. Along with these marketing ploys, binge eating can absolutely do its part to fill a void in your body you don’t know how otherwise to fill. Glenn also talks about some early research into how what you binge on might be an indication of where you have stress in your life. Adopting Healthy Habits to Curb Binge Eating But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn to get your binges under control. Glenn introduces us to his four rules of binge eating. He urges his clients to use these rules to start mastering their binge eating. Glenn also encourages you to stop beating yourself up after binge eating. Getting angry and yelling at yourself is so counterproductive; you need to change your thought pattern. Instead, Glenn says you should start a success collection. This builds up your own self-identity as a success. With some incredibly helpful words, Glenn reminds you that successful people have more failures behind them than anything else. It’s like Paolo Coehlo says, ‘fall seven times, get up eight.’ It’s not about how much you fail or fall back into a binge, it’s about how many times you pick yourself back up and try again. Finally, Glenn wants you to stop using the excuse of a binge to start tomorrow. You don’t get a scratch on your car and then decide to crash it, right? Use the present moment, even if that’s directly after a binge, to make your next healthy move. Do you find you binge eat? You’re not alone. I’d love to know what your favorite food to binge is. Binge eating happens to all of us, whether due to addiction or emotional trauma. I'm joined by Dr. So if you're ever feeling like you can't control your binges, let's just say you're not alone. Big business wants you to binge. There are some people who find so much solace and comfort in binge eating. Along with these marketing ploys, binge eating can absolutely do its part to fill a void in your body you don't know how otherwise to fill. It's like Paolo Coehlo says, ‘fall seven times, get up eight.' It's not about how much you fail or fall back into a binge, it's about how many times you pick yourself back up and try again. Dr. Livingston’s career was the envy of those who knew him. The author of Never Binge Again, Glenn is a veteran psychologist and was the long-time CEO of a multi-million-dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. Featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, ABC, CBS radio, and UPN TV to name just a few media outlets, Glenn willingly admits he was driven by financial success. Over the course of his career, Glenn has sold $30,000,000 of marketing consulting services. Although monetarily successful, he hid a deep hole he could not seem to fill with anything other than food. He had a very intimate relationship with binging. As his bank account grew, so did his waistline. Tipping the scales at nearly 280 pounds, Glenn was forced to face his demons. Never did he think he would end up as a tired, frustrated, obese man whose main comfort came from food. He was ready for a change. Yet, his journey out of obesity and the food prison he found himself in was not without more frustration. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of binging and overeating through the work he did with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison. Glenn is the author of the book Never Binge Again, with over 500,000 Amazon Kindle downloads in the last two years. His unique way of approaching food choices has helped countless individuals to develop a normal, healthy weight and a much more light-hearted relationship with food. He advocates eating whole foods but is not promoting a specific diet, rather he helps people understand and overcome what leads to overeating so that they choose to never binge again. In today’s conversation, Glenn shares his personal struggle with food, where it started and how he overcame it. We discuss why overeating, stress eating, and binge eating are so prevalent in our culture today, and why it is nearly impossible to love yourself thin. An eye-opening conversation about the human brain, this interview is a great resource for anyone interested in taking control of their mind. Key Takeaways We perceive that food which is vibrant in color is nutrient-rich. The food companies use this to fake us out by making their package colorful. Certain foods impact our pleasure systems, causing us to keep coming back for more. Character trumps willpower. Create character rules around food that eliminate the need for (case by case) decision making. Decision-making wears down your willpower. Bingeing and dieting are similar in that they both keep you in the feast and famine state of emergency. It is possible to override our primitive survival drives with our better thinking. Instead to trying to lose weight, follow this one rule. Every time you take something away, ask yourself what you are going to add. We are correcting our survival drives that have been hijacked by industry. Never Binge Again - Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the longtime CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. The Epiphany Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. Overweight Epidemic Most people in the United States are, to say the least slightly overweight. Many of us are overweight through no fault of our own. The food we consume is not the natural variety intended for us on this planet. Due to the ever-growing population, we are bombarded with a synthetic version of the natural foods to feed ourselves. Each year adults across the globe make New Year's resolutions to lose weight. It's very hard to win the battle of the bulge when it comes to food choices and health. Many of us are addicted to the food that is intended to keep us alive and healthy. Frequently the food we consume is detrimental to our long-term wellbeing. We consumed far too many calories as the food is packed with calories but not much nutrition. The Podcast Interview Glenn Livingston Ph.D. is the author of never binge again. Glenn Livingston took it upon himself to decipher why binge eating was a hard addiction to break for many people. On the billionaire lifestyle podcast, Glenn spoke of how as a young man it was very easy to stay in shape and eat whatever he liked. Progressing in age Glenn found it harder and harder to lose weight or keep the weight off his body. His food addiction of choice was chocolate. After performing some research he found the root cause was in his childhood but still he could not break this addiction. Feelings and food Glenn Livingston is the product of a family of professional therapist. In his own words if you ask a therapist to solve a problem they're going to ask the subject in question how it feels. Glenn Livingston found his food addiction was so severe at times, it hampered his attention to work prosperously. Upon identifying the problem a food addiction Glenn began his research to find out why he could not control his food urges. During his research, Glenn found our reptilian brain can override our sense of logic for choices to feed our pleasure centers. In many cases please is found in the form of food. There are situations which cause us to act differently than our norm. He found emotional states can trigger food preference addiction. In essence with the type of food available, we have been trained away from natural whole food. The replacement for the natural foods are the industrial process foods available in every grocery store across the globe in industrialized nations. During our interview, Glenn summed up modern food as a new kind of crack. Other revelations included: Lonely or broken heated people overindulge with Chocolate. Stressed at work individuals overindulge with Crunchy salty snacks. Soft chewy foods indicate stress at home. To get all the information Glenn provided please listen to the podcast.

I show you how to generate all the leads you can possibly handle by evaluating your existing marketing and showing you how to dramatically reduce or eliminate the money you’re currently spending while significantly increasing both your response and conversion rates. I can typically double or triple your current response rate...but a 50 to 100 times increase isn’t out of the question. And best of all, the strategies I'll teach you will continue to work for you month after month for as long as you're in business. But listen, I know talk is cheap... and I know that you’ve heard these types of claims before, so put me to the test and let me prove that everything I've just said is 100% true. If you will invest just 45 minutes with me, I promise that I will find you at least $10,000 in additional revenue that you can begin to put in your pocket this month... and every month moving forward. We can do this 45 minute session over the phone as an added convenience to you... and I promise during the time we're together that I won't try to sell you a thing. But there is one catch. I'm writing a book detailing the strategies I use to find $10,000 for any small business owner, and my publisher has asked me to include a few additional case studies in my book. On episode 55 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, we welcome filmmaker, Dean Alioto to the show. Dean Alioto is the creator of the mysterious and enigmatic UPN TV special Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (aka The McPherson Tape). For two decades, Alioto’s TV special has generated conspiracies worldwide and has been studied by top experts in the field of UFOs and alien abductions. Alioto runs us through the trials and tribulations of creating the TV special and the reaction to it upon airing. In addition, Alioto also talks about the original video that the controversial TV special was based on. Known simply as, UFO Abduction, this video brought the house down at the 1993 International UFO Congress Convention with its shocking footage of a family being abducted by aliens. Alioto and Ryan then dig deep into why so many people refuse to believe these two films were created instead of "found". Then Alioto runs us through a few of his favorite UFO cases. This is a jam-packed interview with the filmmaker who arguably created the entire "Found Footage" genre, almost ten years prior to The Blair Witch Project. Guest Bio: Dean Alioto studied film at both University of Southern California and San Francisco State University. Alioto’s theatrical film debut, Crashing Eden, won several national and international awards. The dark satire was praised by Variety, singling out Alioto’s writing and his ability to work with actors. Alioto’s second film, L.A. Dicks, told the story of two Los Angeles detectives who pitch their real-life cases to Hollywood. The film went on to receive the Spirit Award at the Toronto International RebelFest Film Festival. In addition to filmmaking, Alioto is a drummer and enjoys playing with his fellow musicians in the band, Uncle Bob and The Wonderland Express. http://www.NeverBingeAgain.com Impact Of Eating Right http://learntruehealth.com/impact-eating-right/ Most of us shrug off the importance and impact of eating right. With my returning guest today, we covered things like binge eating and strategies on how to eat as well as develop willpower. Today, Dr. Glenn Livingston is back on the show to talk about our relationship with food as well as the impact of eating right towards achieving a good mental and emotional health. Helping People Dr. Glenn Livingston, not a medical doctor, but rather a psychologist. So, he’s genuinely a good resource person who could expound on how the impact of eating right can benefit us in so many ways. Dr. Glenn Livingston helps people on all sorts of diets. I suggest that everyone must sign up for his newsletter as well as download his free Never Binge Again book from his website. He is a raw vegan. And when Dr. Glenn Livingston works with people, he does it the context of a coach. Rarely does he talk about his diet. He says this is because people are most likely going to become resistant if they think they had to be a raw vegan like Dr. Glenn Livingston. Raw Vegan Diet Dr. Glenn Livingston eats almost entirely fruits and vegetables. He gets enough protein and calcium which he says made him feel stronger, sleep better, normalize his blood pressure, as well as made his psoriasis and eczema disappear. “I have no problem staying relatively thin, and I have no tremendous carb or salt cravings. It’s something I have evolved into over the course of so many years,” shares Dr. Glenn Livingston. He adds, “Every time I got rid of some industrially processed food, I ask myself what authentic physiological, biological need I have for these foods. And I start to train myself to crave for healthier things.” Foods To Avoid Dr. Glenn Livingston believes that food has been demonized, along with all of the processed carbohydrates. Knowing the impact of eating right is essential now more than ever. We must fix our relationship with food before it’s too late. “I’m very much not in favor of people indulging in a lot of starch and sugar. It’s a big part of the downfall of our health and society,” Dr. Glenn Livingston said. “The American Diabetic Association does not encourage you to limit fruit or whole food. There’s a lot of fear and demonization of fruit in particular.” Dr. Glenn Livingston also reveals that there’s another culprit people are not paying attention to. He says fat acts as an insulator. Studies show that unfortunately, 30 to 40% of the American diet contains fat. “If you drop it down to the 10% range, the uptake transport and absorption of sugar and oxygen are dramatically better. You’ll notice this in your ability to breathe better, and your performance at the gym improves dramatically,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. “Cardiovascular performance will also improve. It’s incredible we’re not aware we are creating problems by putting so much fat in our system.” Mother’s Experience When Dr. Glenn Livingston was 15 years old, his mother had some few cancerous tumors in her uterus. She saw an alternative healer who suggested going on a vegan diet instead of having a hysterectomy. Dr. Glenn Livingston’s mother was not even 40 years old when she was diagnosed, so she also hesitated to have the surgery done. Deciding to go on a vegan diet for six months, her tumors reversed, and she eventually didn’t have to have a hysterectomy. From that point on, Dr. Glenn Livingston was determined to become a vegan, too. Dr. Glenn Livingston’s mother eventually went off on the vegan diet and lived for another 35 years later or so before she passed away. But Dr. Glenn Livingston was already convinced that there was something special about the vegan diet, although he strayed from the vegan diet during his college years. Finding The Right Diet Dr. Glenn Livingston recalls coming across a book in graduate school about cancer. It reminded him of the vegan connection that’s why he decided to go back to a vegan diet. But he still didn’t understand everything back then. Labeling himself a junk food vegan then, Dr. Glenn Livingston thought eating pasta, candy, and fried foods were okay as long as it wasn’t animal products. Not surprisingly, he didn’t get very healthy on that diet. Dr. Glenn Livingston married a year after that, although he’s divorced now. He shares that he was married to a woman who was brought up in a deli and the Atkins diet was gaining popularity that time. But his ex-spouse apparently had a friend who was studying nutrition and advocated a low carb diet. Unfortunately, Dr. Glenn Livingston, couldn’t stick to the diet. He couldn’t seem to achieve the impact of eating right, so he wasn’t really in tip-top shape during his 30s and 40s. Constant Research Dr. Glenn Livingston kept reading books in the hope that he could find the right kind of diet for him. He came across The China Study by T. Colin Campbell. The book explained the author’s research in China, where they looked at the correlation between the different health conditions and diet. “Cancer was very much associated with the level of animal protein that people had. If people can keep their level of animal protein under 5%, they would have virtually no cancer whatsoever,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. Dr. Glenn Livingston also started to look for some books about vegan nutrition. He came across Eat To Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, who was advocating against animal protein. Incidentally, Dr. Joel Fuhrman was a former guest in one of my episodes. I was hooked on meat before and took me a while to come around. Dr. Joel Fuhrman was very thorough in explaining everything about animal protein. I love his very science-based approach towards making a diet. Dr. Glenn Livingston also cited the book Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession with Meat Is Killing Us, by Dr. Garth Davis and Howard Jacobson. The book is about the science of protein addiction and why we don’t need it. “Our muscles are supposed to produce these energy-giving substances, but when you eat animal protein, the body stops producing those substances,” Dr. Glenn Livingston explains. “When you stop eating meat, people feel exhausted. They don’t feel well because it takes a while for their muscles to upregulate and start producing it again.” He adds, “That’s why people think they need it. Same for sugar. But food cravings will go away quicker than you think, usually within four days.” Seeing A Change Dr. Glenn Livingston says that although he got healthy following a low protein diet, he still had little psoriasis. Plus, he still had weight issues. But now that on a raw vegan diet, Dr. Glenn Livingston’s health significantly improved. He finally felt he was on the right track after seeing the impact of eating right. According to Dr. Glenn Livingston, Victoria Boutenko’s book (Green Smoothie Revolution) on raw foods is a good resource for making green smoothies. He drinks green smoothies especially during the days when he craves for chocolate. Dr. Glenn Livingston persevered and kept trying different green smoothie recipes. It’s not the same high compared to eating chocolate, but the craving would go away. After a few months, he noticed his craving started to shift to green smoothies! “I always believe these cravings that we think we can’t live without, there’s an authentic biological reason behind it,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. Fruits And Vegetables To better understand the benefits of incorporating fruits and vegetables into your diet, Dr. Glenn Livingston recommends Dr. Doug Graham’s 80/10/10 diet. In formulating the 80/10/10 diet, Dr. Doug Graham says we’re meant to live on fruits and vegetables, as well as a handful of nuts and seeds. Part of the belief system is also saying we are not supposed to cook food. Because apparently, cooking creates all sorts of toxins. It is energy-draining and has life-killing substances, so Dr. Glenn Livingston felt better eating raw. “I hired a coach, got to meet Dr. Doug Graham and attended workshops. I now speak for low-fat, raw veganism. It’s difficult to get used to. You have to eat more volume than you’re used to, and you have to commit,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. Dr. Glenn Livingston’s diet primarily consists of smoothies, lettuce, bananas, mangoes, strawberries, and sometimes dates. He also likes to make cucumber noodles topped with a sauce made of tomatoes, lemon juice, and dates which were Dr. Glenn Livingston’s significant weight loss trick. Effect On Emotional And Mental Health Dr. Glenn Livingston says when you put things into your body that your body has to recover from, it affects the physiological energy of the nervous system. Our body goes into digesting it, eliminating and isolating the toxins to deal with the enormous task that you give it. “And when all the energy is put into that, it doesn’t have the energy to conduct the emotions. So, you’re not present in the way you could be. You’re also not able to feel the emotions the way you could be,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. “And you’re not able to feel. This is why people say they need food for comfort. Because it does act as a kind of anesthetic to numb the feeling we have.” He adds, “But I also think that there is a pleasure response, like the feeling we get with drugs. Because we’re being provided with substances that concentrates pleasurable substances.” Dr. Glenn Livingston furthermore explains that we wind up with a whole cascade of events in the nervous system that distorts and perverts its pleasurable response to natural stimuli. When you eliminate that, then people can feel, be present and ultimately, they can think. Maintaining The Willpower Dr. Glenn Livingston believes that what we are built for with our psychology, is to operate according to character. He says that when you make character statements and adopt them into what person you want to be, and how you want food to play in your life, then the obsession is less. “There’s always the possibility of reawakening that old pathway. Our bodies are normally flexible. There’s a principle in research called neuroplasticity. Every time you have a craving, you are rewiring your brain to say, this craving equals to this food instead,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. In line with that train of thought, I had Dr. Alan Goldhammer on the show, who talked about the benefits of eliminating salt, oil, and sugar, as well as tips on how to deal with cravings. Another informative episode was with Dr. Esselstyn, a cardiac surgeon who reverses heart disease with diet. He spoke in detail ways on how to train the brain to eat natural things. “You don’t have to eat super healthy. Start with one change that has a noticeable impact on health,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. “And more importantly, an impact and ability to make a commitment and stick to it. Because you can build on that.” Bio Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long-time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more light hearted relationship with food. His hours of research, personal experience and field experience led to him authoring the book, “Never Binge Again” which is what we were discussing in today’s show, but, this time with a twist. http://www.NeverBingeAgain.com Willpower http://learntruehealth.com/willpower-stop-bingeing/ Willpower to stop bingeing is something a lot of people struggle with. Whether you plan to eat healthily or currently maintaining your weight, having the willpower to stay on track is a continuous effort. I’m thrilled that my guest, Dr. Glenn Livingston, is back on the show to teach us how to make sure we maintain the willpower to stop overeating. Former Binge Eater Dr. Glenn Livingston talked extensively about how to stop bingeing on episode 56 of the Learn True Health. He gave a lot of tips in that episode, so I suggest everyone check it out. For those who have not heard the initial guesting of Dr. Glenn Livingston on my show, you’d be surprised that he was a former binge eater himself. He struggled throughout his younger years when he went to graduate school until he got married. He found it had to exercise to career demands and so his metabolism went down. Having the willpower to stop eating just didn’t seem possible. Family Of Psychologists Dr. Glenn Livingston comes from a family of psychologists, so he felt it was essential to follow the same path. Seventeen family therapists to be exact! When he got divorced years ago, Dr. Glenn Livingston was admittedly unhappy about that. He sought advice from his mother who was also a psychotherapist. That’s when he was able to trace his bingeing, particularly his love for chocolate. Apparently, because of Dr. Glenn Livingston’s family situation when he was young, he was drawn to chocolate early on and was never really strictly regulated from eating it. That, according to Dr. Glenn Livingston, was the match that lit the fire. Finding The Connection Now that he knew the probable cause of his lack of willpower to stop bingeing, Dr. Glenn Livingston went to psychologists, psychiatrists, and even Overeaters Anonymous to research more about bingeing. He also funded a 40,000-person study between the late 90s and early 2000s. “I got all of these people to take a survey about the food they were bingeing on, their lifestyle, personalities, and digging what the connection was. Then I realized that maybe it was because there was no self-love,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. In that study, Dr. Glenn Livingston found out that people who overeat on chocolate tend to be lonely. People who had trouble with crunchy, salty things were usually stressed at work. And people who were drawn to eating soft, chewy stuff like bagels and pasta, tend to be stressed at home. “The emotional conversation with my mom led me to believe that I would be cured. I was able to forgive myself,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. “I forgave my mom, and we became closer. And I feel I became a more soulful person.” Justifying Emotional Discomfort Dr. Glenn Livingston was able to come to terms that his bingeing originated from a time in his life where his mother did not regulate him from overeating. But his bingeing still didn’t stop. In fact, he found it as a justification to eat even more. “If you have a fire that’s out of control, there are two strategies that you can use. You can try to put out the fire, or you can build a fireplace,” Dr. Glenn Livingston said. “A lot of people won’t have that emotional discomfort in order not to binge. I find that it helps a little, but it doesn’t work that well.” He adds, “What works better is intervening at the level of that crazy food demon. Learn how to have clarity about how you want food to play in your life and make decisions about food ahead of time.” Understanding Willpower Dr. Glenn Livingston says willpower is a fatigable muscle. And there are only so many right decisions we can make on any given day. This fact has been proven in so many medical studies. “If you tax people mentally with math problems, they have more trouble resisting a marshmallow before and after the math problem,” explains Dr. Glenn Livingston. “Every decision you’re making is taxing the willpower. And that’s why people start the morning with the best intentions, then overeat at the end of the day.” Furthermore, Dr. Glenn Livingston says that knowing we’re not targeting a loving part of the brain, addiction, on the other hand, targets a very aggressive part of the brain. Now the problem is, once we justify something like eating a chocolate bar, we are opening ourselves up to our lizard brain. Lizard Brain The lizard brain has the eat, mate or kills mindset. There is no love. Plus, addiction targets the lizard brain. “You’re trying to nurture that part of you that’s having the craving. But the part of you that’s having the craving, isn’t this nurturing creature,” explains Dr. Glenn Livingston. “It’s no more part of your human identity than your testicles or ovaries are. They can generate urges, but it’s what you do with those urges that form your character, decisions, and way of eating.” Developing Willpower First of all, Dr. Glenn Livingston says we need clarity about what healthy food was and what it wasn’t. Focus and be clear about the kind of person you want to be around that food and make a clear commitment to be that person. “Just for the moment, put aside the moment that you can’t do it. And imagine what if you did and how would your life be better,” Dr. Glenn Livingston advises. “Go into detail about the specifics of that future. We call this the ‘big why.'” The ‘big why’ can be anything from wanting to lose weight, eating clean, have clearer skin, have more energy for work, be free from food obsession or wanting clothes to fit better. Some other reasons for developing the willpower to stop overeating is to be able to socialize or become a better role model for others. “When your inner brat says you can’t do this because you’re deprived, think about what you are depriving yourself of, by you eating junk foods,” said Dr. Glenn Livingston. “It’s never a matter of whether you’re deprived or not. Either you’re going to deprive yourself of immediate pleasure, or you’re going to deprive yourself of the big future that you are looking for.” He adds, “So what you want to do is make sure that you know both sides of that deprivation equation and make a decision.” Get High On Food Bottomline, Dr. Glenn Livingston recommends that people learn to get high with foods instead of being addicted to something unhealthy. He says it’s beneficial if people shift paradigms by learning the art of focusing and clarity. If you’re set on getting on that road to health or need an added push, I suggest looking into Dr. Glenn Livingston’s programs. He offers individual and group programs which have produced a lot of success stories. Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's) previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or any of the other major media outlets you see on this page. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more light hearted relationship with food. His hours of research, personal experience and field experience led to him authoring the book, “Never Binge Again” which is what we were discussing in today’s show. The topics in the interview included: Glenn’s Own Problems With Food & Overeating How To Stop Overeating & Binge Eating Why Overeating & Stress Eating Is Such A Big Issue In Society Today Is Over Eating Complicated? How To Think Like A Thin Person Dominating The Lizard Brain & Much More It was great fun speaking to Glenn and we’ve actually got a follow up interview booked already where he is going to use his psychological powers on me to show you all how this works. You can find Glenn and his book here: https://neverbingeagain.com/ Enjoy the show and as always don’t forget to share it with your friends and family, as well as writing a review on iTunes. Summary: What’s your personal story with binge eating and why did you choose to focus on it professionally? Why is binge eating and overeating so rampant in our culture today? Is binge eating really a disease? Are people who do it defective in their characters? Is it really possible to stop without years of complex, deep diving therapy and treatment?
Why do some people suffer from overwhelming food cravings, multiple times per week—and others never have cravings at all? Why do some of us feel addicted and out-of-control with food while others could take it or leave it? Food is information, and modern foods are often filled with addicting, pleasure-center stimulating information that we can easily get hooked on. So what do you do about it? How do you change this behavior and never binge again? Dr. Glenn Livingston will share his personal and professional expertise in this area. ------------ Listen & Learn: How Glenn ate as much as 7,000 calories per day, but learned to overcome it Why character trumps willpower—and how you can use that to your advantage Why it's less important to uncover the "why" behind cravings and instead uncover the "how" to fix it Why lizard brain says: "Do I eat it, mate with it or kill it," and how this can cause problems ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr. Glenn Livingston is a psychologist and former CEO of a large consulting firm that serviced Fortune 500 clients including many in the food industry. Today's episode is breaking new ground for the Enoughness Revolution as we're talking about overeating for the first time ever on the podcast! I'm honored to be joined by Dr. Glenn Livingston, veteran psychologist and the author of Never Binge Again, which you're getting access to below for free! It was such a treat to host to the conversation and I know he's going to share some major truth bombs with you when it comes to how we learn to heal the pattern of overeating. In this episode we talk about: 1. Why healing emotional wounds doesn't necessarily stop negative patterns 2. Why we overeat in the first place 3. How rules can help us honor ourselves, the way we eat, and why these two are related I'm happy to announce I'll be appearing on Dr. Livingston's podcast soon too as I share how enoughness interacts with overeating, my story of enoughness, and how we begin to detach ourselves from shame and sink into our Divinity instead.
