Do you ever feel like you're constantly investing time and energy into everyone else but yourself? As a certified life coach, I understand how challenging it can be to prioritize self-care and personal growth. It's not selfish to invest in yourself; it's essential. In my coaching journey, I've seen how taking time to focus on your own brain and well-being can create a ripple effect, positively impacting not just you but also your family and community. In this episode, I share a success story of a new member who resisted temptation and felt empowered by her choice. This story highlights the broader positive impact on her family and community. I delve into my background as a teacher and how that experience translates to my coaching methods. I also explain the concept of the spiral curriculum, emphasizing the importance of foundational learning and gradual complexity, connecting brain functions and habits to overall well-being. What you will learn in this episode: The importance of self-investment: Understand why taking time for yourself is crucial and not selfish. The spiral curriculum: Learn how foundational learning and gradual complexity can help you grow. Brain and body connection: Discover how brain functions and habits are linked to your overall well-being and how you can use this knowledge to create lasting change. Grab your worksheet HERE. Book Mentioned: Man's Search for Meaning by Victor E. Frankl
Our guest is Chaim Oren, an expert on resilience, wellbeing and high performance, who advises professional sportspeople and leading CEOs on fulfilling their human potential. When it comes to strengthening personal resilience, Chaim quotes Victor E. Frankl, Auschwitz survivor and author of Man's Search for Meaning: “If you have the why you can endure any how”. Frankl, who conceptualised “logotherapy” a therapeutic approach to find personal meaning in life, believed anyone, anywhere could “rise up to any challenge”. “If you develop a life meaning you can overcome any difficulties, dangers and hardships". Chaim is the son of two Holocaust survivors who arrived in British mandate Palestine on the Exodus ship in 1947. His late uncle Dov Shilansky, the 12th speaker of the Knesset, was a close confidant of Menachem Begin. He's famous for saying, "we don't have another choice, we must fight for our life. I won't put up my head in the handing rope again." We develop our conversation into how Israel comes together in times of existential crisis and how the intense unity has followed on from intense political divisions, created by the upheaval to reform the judiciary. Stories of great personal courage have emerged amid Hamas' savagery and brutality on October 7th. Listen now for a story of incredible heroism from an everyday Israeli, Rachel Edri, who kept Hamas fighters at bay for hours and hours and saved her own and her father's lives. Chaim has a wealth of anecdotes and quotes in a rich conversation. I hope you enjoy Chaim Oren's company as much as I did. Jonny Gould's Jewish State is supported by Dangoor Education.

Personal Power is our ability to adapt, effectively, to the change in our life. It's our ability to persist in the face of challenges, maintain steady self-belief, and with confidence, meet each new day ready to realise our full potential. I believe that whenever we take on big, intimidating goals, we flex our personal power and it is what wakes us up to the possibilities available to us. A deep sense of personal power is the only thing that will allow you to notice and actually reach for the possibilities, and the more power you believe you have, the more awake and aware you're to the possibilities in life. In this episode, I talk how and why we must keep alive our sense of personal power. If you feel limited by your circumstances, how inner power can help you overcome those restrictions and win despite the odds stacked against you. I share examples of people with lives that embody the value of personal power. Today’s Coaching Through Stories episode features former VA Secretary, Robert “Bob” McDonald. Dr. Eric Bean is also joined by guest co-host, University of South Carolina President, Robert “Bob” Caslen. Learn how McDonald placed character at the heart of culture change to deliver Veterans with consistent, high-quality experiences and achieve sales metrics as the CEO at The Procter & Gamble Company. Listen to this episode and get the dose of depth and inspiration you need! McDonald is credited with rescuing the VA from the brink and transforming the VA culturally to provide better and faster care for the nation’s veterans. Prior to serving as the VA Secretary, McDonald led Procter and Gamble (P&G) and significantly impacted their product portfolio, “expanded the marketing footprint by adding nearly one billion people to its global customer base, and grew the firm’s organic sales by an average of three percent per year.” Caslen is a retired Three-Star Lt. General who served 43 years in the U.S. Army and as the former Superintendent at West Point. He is the current President of the University of South Carolina and a co-author of the phenomenal book entitled The Character Edge: Leading and Winning with Integrity. Episode Highlights: How McDonald got far in his career and what he is working on McDonald’s purpose in achieving more in his life and career What happened earlier that drives McDonald to strive What McDonald believes in and what he thinks is most important looking back Why McDonald thinks that character is an essential trait of leadership McDonald’s encounter with non-driven employees and how he deals with them What the Leaders Developing Leaders Program is McDonald’s principles and values that drive his leadership philosophy McDonald’s role in transforming the culture of VA and the process he went through How the Leaders Developing Leaders Program impact cultural change in VA What challenges McDonald encountered and the strengths he draws on How McDonald focuses on character development on the senior level leadership The annual McDonald Leadership Development Conference How to strike a healthy balance between fostering positive relationships and keeping sight of priorities and goals McDonald’s recommended books Three Key Points: Character is an essential trait of a leader as well as integrating it in the organization. Having the purpose and driving values to the leaders and employees are the foundation of high-performance organizations. Understanding culture and the situation you are in and having a principle-based culture are keys in transforming an organization. Quotes: “I think it’s a shame that too many people waste their time reacting rather than leading to where you want to go.” “Character is defined as putting the needs of the organization above yourself.” “If your ambition is for yourself, chances are you are not going to win in the long term. If your ambition is for the organization, you stand a much better chance of winning.” “Choose the harder right rather than the easier wrong.” “Purpose and values are the foundation of any high performance in the organization.” “In the sense you are taking initiative based on the values, you’re guided by the values, you are not guided by the rules.” Taking the quote from Theodore Roosevelt’s The man in the arena: “Basically, it’s easy to be the man in the arena. But if you are the man in the arena, you are getting the bloody nose, you’re getting knocked down, you get up again… Who’s better? What Leads to a more fulfilling life? The person standing outside of the arena throwing the stones or the person in the arena constantly getting up? You know you gotta apologize one or twice, I’d rather be in the arena. I think it leads to a more fulfilling life.” “As you grow within the company and as you train on culture and purpose and it’s all written down, then you’re promoted based on that.” “I stopped the military culture that had developed in VA. No more tent cards, no more standing up with my come in the room, no more calling me secretary. I am Bob and I want to have an ultimate relationship with you. So intimate that when something goes wrong you’ll tell me it goes wrong.” Resources Mentioned: The Character Edge: Leading and Winning with Integrity If Disney Ran Your Hospital by Fred Lee 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey Leaders by Stanley McChrystal The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge The Westpoint Way of Leadership by Larry Donithorne Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor E. This episode is from my new podcast, ASE, which explores making a living and life as a solopreneur. I bring on artists, social entrepreneurs, and solo founders to explore the self-employed, creative life and how to do your best work. A number of my salsa friends in their 20s and 30s have found it helpful, so I thought I'd share it with you too. ASE showcases a different, more personal side to me (with some cursing, so be warned!). And for those of you who are looking for more MBA admissions content, don't worry, I have plenty more MBA episodes coming your way - including more interviews with MBA Admissions Directors - so stay tuned. Live the Questions A month ago my salsa friends and I shared our personal challenges over smoothies. Most revolved around feeling more whole and complete with ourselves and our lives. I've thought about that conversation for weeks. Here is my unsolicited advice to friends in their 20s searching for purpose, work, home and satisfaction. More than anything, this episode is a reminder to myself to love and live the questions - cause they never go away. Welcome to Episode 32 of Tame, the podcast where we discuss quotes from Marcus Aurelius' 'Meditations' and how we can apply the lessons and logic from the book to our own lives to be stronger, kinder and better people. Today we're discussing the following three quotes: "The lamp shines until it is put out, without losing its gleam, and yet in you it all gutters out so early—truth, justice, self-control?" Book 12, Chapter 15 "At all times, look at the thing itself—the thing behind the appearance—and unpack it by analysis: cause substance purpose and the length of time it exists." Book 12, Chapter 18 " Don’t be irritated at people’s smell or bad breath. What’s the point? With that mouth, with those armpits, they’re going to produce that odor. —But they have a brain! Can’t they figure it out? Can’t they recognize the problem? So you have a brain as well. Good for you. Then use your logic to awaken his. Show him. Make him realize it. If he’ll listen, then you’ll have solved the problem. Without anger. " Book 5, Chapter 28 We hope you enjoy our podcast and encourage you to join the conversation by leaving comments, getting in touch on social media and sharing this with people you think would benefit from hearing it! The chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention declared that China will always be open and transparent in reporting outbreaks of this virus. Around the same time this statement was released, the CCP was caught lying about pressuring German officials to issue positive statements on the Chinese regime, and after an EU report found the CCP had launched a comprehensive disinformation campaign. We’ll explore how the Chinese regime uses a series of common methods in its programs to deceive the world, based around repeating lies, using duplicity so words don’t match actions, switching the blame to its accusers, and always denying guilt. And with all the serious news constantly going around, we’ll take a step back today with advice from literature on coping with hardships. We’ll be looking at quotes from “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Victor E. Frankl, and “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius. What vulnerabilities in our modern systems are being exposed by the global pandemic and how might we use this event to return to truths and become more resilient – and create a more resilient system and society on the other side. What happens when the economy is ground to a halt? Can we think beyond the fear to use this as an opportunity for reorganising? What is the individual and collective opportunity to be found in the global pandemic? As the global community becomes increasingly fearful of not only the virus, but also of the collapse of the global economic system, is it time to recognise that the system was never serving us in the first place? Our measure of success in the current economic system is way off course and now we have the opportunity to re-assess that, because perhaps what we should actually be measuring is wellbeing. In this episode, Chris and Debbie are joined by Brenda and Jalea Baker of A Freesoul Experience. They speak in-depth about life's journey from wholeness to fear and back to wholeness again through one's search for their own, uniquely individual "truth". Brenda and Jalea share:Their Simple StoryThe Freesoul mission--to be happy and free anytime, anywhere, with anyone, and under any circumstanceThe meaning of essence, parking spaces, prying tool, Ahhs, and IcksWhere fear comes fromFear versus wholenessSimple stillnessWords/actions/behaviors that signal fear--need, must, should, interrupting, using a high-pitched voice, explaining, convincingWords/actions/behaviors that signal truth--peaceful, slow, low tone of voice, confidence, silenceThe freedom that comes from choosing to see wholeness in othersSome great quotes from Brenda and Jalea in this episode include:"Truth and freedom are synonymous. Truth and essence are synonymous.""There's no forcing with the truth.""Don't should all over yourself.""When I'm in my truth, I won't be moved."As well as these quotes that came up in conversation that have influenced us: “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Victor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning“Suffering is necessary until you realize it is unnecessary.” - Eckhart Tolle, Stillness Speaks“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”― Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles"Resources from this episode:Their website: https://afreesoulexperience.com/Their socials: Instagram, FacebookPurchase A Simple StoryThis blog post on fearOther books mentioned in this episode:Spontaneous Evolution - Bruce LiptonBig Magic - by Elizabeth GilbertMan's Search for Meaning - Victor FranklThe Daily Stoic - Ryan Holiday
A month ago my salsa friends and I shared our personal challenges over smoothies. Most revolved around feeling more whole and complete with ourselves and our lives. Kat and Moose discuss embarking on new habits, like Yoga and the conversation evolves into colleagues who assign motive when the assignment is grossly inaccurate. We discuss words that are disturbing, but not inherently bad, though there are a few that Kat deem absolutely unacceptable. 0:54 - Moose talks about starting the practice of Yoga. 1:30 - JoAnna Illingworth’s novel “The Black Umbrella” and how her former writings talked about one man really releasing himself during Yoga class.3:50 - Kat brings up the topic of assigning motive and how absurd it can be how we assume the intentions and motivations of others. Kat learns that a business colleague was suffering from diarrhea. 8:00 - Let’s not assume we know where the other is coming from; 10/10 we have no idea what the other person is going through11:41 - Amazing quote from Victor E. Frankl “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”12:50 - There are certain words that just should not be said, like moist, turtleneck … and some others… you’ll have to listen.17:44 - Jimmy Kelly’s Steakhouse has a formal stance on the Faucon Salad.19:34 - Moose thinks Kat is Dr. Seuss’ing her!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/katandmoose)

Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake. Man's Search for Meaning by Victor E. Frankl is a great book about psychology, the value of life, and of course, the meaning of life. Victor was the survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. He lost all the things and people he loved but learned one thing. Everything can be taken from a man but not the last of the human freedoms: to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. The first part of the book reveals the cruel of the camp, but also the greatness of humanity, and the second part book focuses on the psychological research of Victor. After been saved from the camp, he founded his own theory: logotherapy. Recommend this book to you if you are wondering the meaning and the goal of your life. You can skip the psychological part if you are not a fan about the subject, but I'm sure you will definitely get inspiration and motivation from his story about the concentration camp. 联系: 微 信:bearbigtalk(公众号) 网 站:beartalking.com (http://www.beartalking.com) 邮 箱:bear@beartalking.com (mailto:bear@beartalking.com) 微 博:@i大狗熊 (http://www.weibo.com/bearbig)
Welcome to Episode 7 of Tame, the podcast where we discuss quotes from Marcus Aurelius' 'Meditations' and how we can apply the lessons and logic from the book to our own lives to be stronger, kinder and better people. Today we're discussing the following three quotes: "Choose not to be harmed—and you won’t feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed—and you haven’t been." Book 4, Chapter 7 "But death and life, success and failure, pain and pleasure, wealth and poverty, all these happen to good and bad alike, and they are neither noble nor shameful—and hence neither good nor bad." Book 2, Chapter 11 "It was for the best. So Nature had no choice but to do it." Book 4, Chapter 9 We hope you enjoy our podcast and encourage you to join the conversation by leaving comments, getting in touch on social media and sharing this with people you think would benefit from hearing it! ____________________________________________________ Tame is a podcast that uses philosophy to create rational arguments for better mental fortitude and resilience.
Please forgive the inferior sound quality, as this was a recorded conference call. Victor E. Frankl survived a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, and he wrote a book entitled “Man's Search for Meaning” about the two main principles that he believes gave him the mental and emotional wherewithal to survive. He exercised what he calls “the last of human freedoms” which gave him something to live for: he continually envisioned a scene from his past (being with his family in their den, warm and cozy around the roaring fire) and his hopes for the future (to finish the book he had started and dedicate the rest of his life to helping suffering people). Everything that has ever been created came from the “image maker”, which makes your ability to imagine the most powerful tool you have. However, negative programming can overwhelm your ability to choose to create or imagine something to live for. So put yourself in Victor's situation, imagine that you are wrongly imprisoned: What is the one thing that you have to live for? You are not wrongly imprisoned right now, but at least you can imagine the importance of having something to live for. So choose today and every day to intentionally use your image maker to create positive things in your day, focused on love and truth. Frankl Insights “We brought women together to become role models for other women and to break the stereotypes about what it looks like to be a woman in tech because we found that was also some of the things that were holding people back.”-Terri Brax “Over the course of the year between 2015 and 2016 we saw Chicago become the global leader of women in tech with now 30% of all tech startups led by women.”-Terri Brax “We need role models for women in leadership in tech and in leadership overall.”-Terri Brax “We want to make sure that every young woman sees someone that looks like them and every career changer can look at somebody and think ‘hmm maybe I can try something that reflects me and I can do this to.”-Terri Brax “They came to the tech industry not because they wanted to play with programming but they wanted to achieve this goal that’s driving their soul and they were going to knock down walls in order to make that happen.” -Terri Brax “How important it is to build that whole ecosystem, instead of just alone focusing on that one small piece. We need that support.”- Terri Brax “Women tend to start with this passion and often times you’re so dedicated to the goal that your revenue miles need to be built up in order to reach the broader goals.”- Terri Brax “Think of your revenue model as strongly as you’re thinking about the passion and how to get to it.” -Terri Brax “When I started this I would look and see this woman who in my head knew absolutely everything and never fact checked herself. She was so confident. But what i’ve really seen all of us have insecurities coming from different places and we’re all trying to work through them, but I see the value of having that confident front in order to be able to move other people forward.”-Terri Brax “Once you’ve been in it, it’s almost like a bug that bites you. It’s really hard to not think in the terms that an entrepreneur starts thinking. All the crazy things that go along with it is hard.. but the rewards for it are so high.”-Terri Brax “Seeing that you can create something from nothing is an amazing fill you up kind of feeling and knowing that you can make the world a better place, that is just so rewarding.”-Terri Brax “Timing in the tech startup world is incredibly important. They say the number one way to succeed is to have some sort of a platform at the time when there is a lot of things happening around it.”- Terri Brax “If you want to be in this industry you should be in this industry.” -Terri Brax “Women, I don’t think give themselves enough credit for what they do know and how strong and impactful that can be and how we can all work together to fill each other's voids and to learn from each other to move each other forward.”-Terri Brax “No matter what I do, I am going to be OK. There’s people to support you. There’s so much here that we have in this country.”-Terri Brax
