Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Bryan: Hi Dr C. A couple weeks ago I noticed a skin rash running up the side of my back and on both sides of my lower abdomen. I chalked it up as a fluke and it went away for a while. Until this morning. I figured out the culprit seems to be my portable steam sauna which I have in my room. I've been using a steam sauna for years and never had this happen before. Wish I could upload a photo but is there anything you could recommend for this kind of problem? It doesn't hurt, the skin just feels warm and looks red. Could it be Rosacea? Appreciate any insight. Best, Andy: Hey any idea how to cure eye floaters I haven't seen any protocols on how to cure them? Deanna: Thank you for your informative podcast and for sharing your expertise. My two-year-old son has been diagnosed with Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) to oars, and I'm seeking guidance on potential triggers or the best approach to testing and managing this condition. For some context, he also has IgE-mediated food allergies to peanuts, certain tree nuts, and eggs and eczema so I thought the gut could be a place to start. I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations you may have. Thank you in advance for your help! Lana: Hi Dr Cabral, thank you for taking the time to answer the community questions, very much appreciate this gift. My daughter is 8 years old and I have found a couple of grey hairs in her head, root to tip. Why could this be? Anonymous: In the last two years, I've been through all the protocols. Labs are looking good. Continually working on stress reduction. I sleep well, move a lot, eat a healthy diet with lots of grass fed/finished beef from our ranch, dark greens, try to eat the rainbow. I'm taking Cardio, Vision, Cell Boost, multi, omegas, balanced zinc, magnesium. I keep constantly get light headed every time i move too fast, winded easily, yawn a lot. After your episode on low iron, I just ran blood labs and my iron (29), ferritin (3), iron sat (7%) hematocrit (33.7%), hemoglobin (9.8), MCH (23.6), MCHC (29.1), RDW (19.6%), and Alk Phos (14) are all really low. I am not sure what else could be causing these low levels; I have struggled for many years. any advice is appreciated. In this video, Dr. Doug Lucas discusses the misconceptions surrounding calcium supplementation for osteoporosis. He emphasizes that osteoporosis is not merely a calcium deficiency issue and critiques the outdated recommendations for calcium and vitamin D. Dr. Doug advocates for a broader approach to bone health that includes dietary sources of calcium and other essential minerals. He explores the differences between whole food and synthetic calcium supplements, highlighting the benefits of natural sources like algae and MCHC. Ultimately, he concludes that food is the best source of calcium and recommends a multi-mineral approach for supplementation.*STUDIES*https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25274192/https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11010-010-0402-0https://www.algaecal.com/research/clinical-studies?srsltid=AfmBOoqDvxkeZR4lov-qxJi7IvHpzV9aTfVyBhVQeRjcj-NtQg9wI9o4https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22254052/*INTERESTED IN PURCHASING PRODUCTS DR. Nugget of Hope: "You don't have to wait to feel amazing." As a wife, mom, and business owner, Barbara Walsh had a lot of plans for the prime of her life. But everything changed a few years ago when she went for a routine mammogram and was sent for a biopsy. She was then given the devastating news: You have Stage 1 Breast Cancer. Barbara had always been a very compliant “patient,” but she knew it was time to stop, pray – a lot, and seek another option. She felt led to roll up her sleeves and do research. What she found was an answer to prayer! She learned about the power of nutrition and that a strong immune system is the key to health and healing. Barbara is a board-certified Master Health Coach. She helps women take control of their health, break free from the fear of facing diagnoses, and learn how to harness the healing power of food to re-energize their bodies and experience lasting transformation and vitality. Mothers are the most powerful force on the planet. We are raising the next generation, feeding them, and teaching them. Sometimes, it's easy to forget what an important job we are doing as mothers. But a mom will do anything to keep their family safe and healthy. I'm sure my guest will agree that moms have the potential to change the world, one family at a time. And that's exactly what she's doing. Katie Wells, CTNC, MCHC, is the founder of Wellness Mama, an online resource for women and moms who want to live healthier lives. Katie and her team of researchers and medical advisors analyze a wide variety of health, parenting, and natural living topics and summarize the information in a clear and usable way. They aim to present practical tips, natural food recipes, DIY beauty instructions, green cleaning tutorials, natural remedies, and other information to improve people's lives. Katie also hosts The Wellness Mama Podcast, a weekly podcast series covering the health topics of real food, stress, sleep, fitness, toxins, natural living, and much more to give you actionable steps to improve your family's health. Katie is not a doctor or a health guru (that's why she has medical advisors!). She's just a mom who is super passionate about creating a healthy life for her family, If you want to become a “Wellness Mama” like Katie and help create lasting change, we discuss some practical ways that you can take part in keeping your family healthy. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Lindsey: Hello Dr. Cabral, I would love to pick your brain on a controversial Vitamin D question. I have always followed the integrative/holistic/naturopathic view on Vitamin D and the idea that low levels can be part of the chain reaction of root cause issues for many dis-eases of the body. However, I recently listened to a XXXXX podcast episode with XXXX about Vitamin D levels and supplementation that made a lot of sense even though it contradicts everything every respected Integrative doctor has ever thought about vitamin D. If you are familiar with his explanation, I'd love to hear your thoughts. If not, it's a suggested conversation topic for a future episode vastly different than the other vit d podcasts in the past. Lindsey: Hello again Dr. Cabral - one more question to have a conversation about. I am breastfeeding and I wonder about future autoimmune issues for my baby. If I comprehend the autoimmune theory correctly, when the gut is leaky, proteins cross the lining and the body sees them as invaders creating an autoimmune response that expresses in the weak part of your individual body. This is very simplified. Since babies are born with permeable guts, can proteins go through my milk to do this. I am specifically worried because I have MODY or Type 1.5 diabetes. Since dairy in babes can cause type 1 diabetes, if I eat dairy will that do the same through my milk for the baby? What about allergen introduction? They suggest to do the big 9 within the first year. If one is a trigger, will it create AI? Caitlin: I will try to keep this short: How do I know if I am suffering from candida overgrowth or just have a lot of the common symptoms of it for different reasons? I have severe eczema/dermatitis on my hands. I have suffered from this for years, on and off. I am working in a restaurant again, which has worsened it, but I know that my poor gut health in the past has played a role and steroid withdrawal. have for the last year and a half took major steps to improving my health Basically, I have the skin issues, I have yeast infections sort of often, and now I am experiencing dry scalp. Could this just be a few things happening at once and because it's winter? (I live in New York). I'm sorry for the lengthy message and understand if you can't answer on the podcast. Thank you for all you do. Ales: Hello Dr. Cabral. I am an Integrative Health Practitioner L2, and I have question regarding food sensitivity testing. There seems to be newer version of testing called MRT (Mediator Release Test), which unlike IgG (testing for only type III sensitivity), is testing for type IV sensitivity. They claim that when the T-cells identity a food as harmful, they release mediators such as cytokines, histamines, and prostaglandins, causing inflammatory symptoms. Since MRT apparently measures the release of mediators from WBC and these mediators are proinflammatory chemicals, which leads to chain immune reaction, wouldn't it a much more accurate way to test for food sensitivities? Thank you for your thoughts.. Melissa: Hi Dr. Cabral - I've been working with a local functional medicine doctor and I found out I have 2 MTHFR gene mutations, high estrogen (testosterone and progesterone look good), high cortisol, APOE3/E4, low dopamine, high oxidative stress, AA/EPA is high, low MCHC, a marker for celiac disease, strep in my gut (no parasites) and my IgG and IgM are both very low. My FM dr is telling me to find an immunologist. I'm thankful to have all of this information but I'm feeling overwhelmed. I wanted to reach out for any specific advice you can provide with this info (nutritionally, testing, exercise, etc). Are there certain foods I shouldn't eat with MTHFR gene mutation or high estrogen? You may know that personal care products often have enough iodine to be a real problem for those with thyroid disease. In fact, back in 2018, the FDA banned iodine from hand sanitizers when there were a lot of problems showing up with health care workers. So many are asking what product is safe to use. Which ingredients to look out for? Is there a list of safe products? And the difficulty is that because they could change what's in the product, today can be different in the coming weeks or months and we can't keep up with all of them. Joining us is Katie Wells for us to understand more about personal care products that may affect our health and wellness. The U.N. Climate Change Conference has brought together world leaders and environmental groups who hope to design solutions that will combat rising temperatures around the globe. Baltimore-based Jakir Manela, CEO of the Jewish environmental justice organizations Hazon and Pearlstone Center, attended the conference in Glasgow. It gave him hope, and also gave him pause: ”It's just an unbelievable kind of unprecedented project that we have in front of us, for humanity to make this transition. I believe we can do it, but it is going to really take all of us.” Then we talk with UMBC art professor Lynn Cazabon to hear how the Maryland Center for History and Culture is personalizing how we consider the effects of climate change. Cazabon co-curated MCHC current exhibit, ‘Losing Winter,' and tells us about it. Plus, Dan Barrie, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration breaks down the differences between weather and climate and how those are both changing in our lifetimes. Levine [23:30] Don't Ignore Your Triggers How Katie was able to integrate emotional intelligence and spirituality during her healing journey and what that experience was like for her. Why fear, guilt, and shame are the top factors that are keeping us back from making real progress and change in our lives. Why there is so much power in vulnerability and how that can let us feel freer. The domino effect of sharing our own stories to help people feel comfortable with sharing theirs. Why we are so afraid to share our traumatic experiences with others because we think that we will be seen as broken. Katie's experience learning from the pain teacher. Core childhood wounds and questions that everyone has in some form like "am I loveable?" or "am I worthy?" How we can shift and have compassion for other people when they treat us in a certain way. What steps you can do to start experiencing wounds and struggles that we've carried with us since childhood. Why struggle is a natural part of being a human and we should explore it rather than automatically label it as bad. 366 Mark Wolynn It Didn't Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn Why our behavior, thoughts, and emotions might not even be our own but our parents' or another relative. The 3-5 second rapid pause and evaluation for parents when their child is upset or misbehaving to help them be present and respond that best way they can. How to better appreciate and value time and stillness especially if you are a busy parent. [53:00] Who Are You At Your Essence? How her mission has shifted from wanting to pass on the information and give answers to teaching people how to ask questions. What Katie is doing to help people explore who they are by providing them with questions that they can ask themselves. Free practical tools that she uses on a daily process that you can add to your toolbox to help you integrate and live a life of true wellness. Powerful words you can say to yourself when you are struggling with something that will continue to help you down the road. What wellness means to her today compared to when she first launched Wellness Mama. Power Quotes From The Show Questions To Guide Your Healing "The key is to start asking better questions internally because what we ask internally our subconscious answers. So, when I was asking questions like, 'Why can't I lose weight? Why is this so hard?', my subconscious was telling me, 'Oh it's because you've had 6 kids and you have thyroid problems,' which didn't help me move forward. Then when I started asking better questions like, 'How can I be at peace within myself? How can I love myself and my children more? How is it so easy and fun to move toward a state of better health?', then my subconscious started giving me those answers." - Katie Wells Loving The Wounded Inner Child "We all have these core childhood wounds and questions in some form. They might be questions like, 'Am I lovable? Am I worthy?', or this core belief of 'I'm not good enough.' But when we can shift to see other people and ourselves as a hurt child who wasn't taken care of and wasn't loved in the way they should have been loved, it's much easier to show them love and compassion over anger and resentment." - Katie Wells Uncovering The Origins Of Emotional Pain "Start stepping back and asking yourself, 'Who is experiencing this emotion? Who is experiencing this pain?', and also start differentiating because in childhood we develop this idea that any kind of pain or struggle or hardship is bad and we start categorizing emotions and that relationship continues on into adulthood. We put emotions in boxes as good or bad but there inevitably will be struggle as part of the human condition... ...We're unlikely to get through life without some version of that but the better question is, 'Should we even if we could?' - Is that not part of the teaching of living this life? If we can step back and reframe and not go, 'Oh! Pain equals bad', but ask the better questions about where and what this pain is and who is this deeper version within ourselves that is experiencing that pain, then we have a different perspective to start to work through that." - Katie Wells Links From Today's Show Katie Wells Wellnesse Wellness Mama Podcast 309: How I Overcame Trauma (and Lost 50 Pounds) 472: Josh Trent on Breathwork for Health, Inner Peace, and Learning to Feel Safe In Your Body Paleo f(X) The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk M.D. Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter A. December 2, 2020 — For years, the Mendocino Coast Hospitality Center has worked with local faith groups to run a winter homeless shelter, which houses 15-24 people in addition to the year-round shelter and the transitional housing programs. This year, with pandemic safety measures in place, the year-round shelter has reduced its beds from 24 to 17, and the center is scrambling to find staff to operate the winter shelter at a new site. The Board of Supervisors recently passed an urgency ordinance to allow properties in the coastal zone to operate as shelters without a use permit, and there are three potential properties where the shelter could open in the new year, as long as there are enough people to run it. Hospitality Center interim Director Paul Davis talked about efforts to bring people in out of the cold. Applications to work at the winer shelter are available at the Mendocino Coast Hospitality Center’s webpage.
Katie Wells, CTNC, MCHC, Founder and CEO of and is my guest on today's show. A mom of six with a background in journalism, she took health into her own hands and started researching to find answers to her health struggles. Her research turned into a blog and podcast, and she’s now written over 1,500 blog posts, three books, and was named one of the 100 most influential people in health and wellness. When she’s not reading medical journals, creating new recipes, or recording podcasts, you can find her somewhere outside in the sun with her husband (who she met walking across the country) and kids or undertaking some DIY remodeling project. Obligatory additional unrelated randomness: doula, speed-reader, hates bananas, loves baseball, scuba-diver, INTJ, highly experienced in answering the question, “why.” Her new company is her debut line of high-quality, all-natural, and clean personal care products. It is based on the DIY creations she has been making in her kitchen for years and is set to launch January 2020. Cruelty-free, GMO-free, and paraben-free are important personal care product qualities for Katie Wells, CTNC, MCHC, award-winning blogger, author, podcaster, and real-food crusader. The first products in the product line include: -Whitening Toothpaste -Cleansing Shampoo for All Hair Types -Smoothing Shampoo for All Hair Types -Nourishing Conditioner for Wavy, Curly Hair -Enriching Conditioner for Wavy, Curly Hair Katie spent more than ten years researching the personal care market and perfecting her own recipes using safe and natural ingredients. Katie Wells, CTNC, MCHC, has been answering my questions about health and wellness, via Google, for years now – so I’m pumped to have her on the show to ask some of these questions in person! Katie, AKA Wellness Mama, is a top thought leader for a young generation of moms who want to avoid the rampant health issues currently plaguing our youth. However, when Katie began her journey, she was just a young mom-to-be who wanted some answers about her own health challenges, which were really kicked into overdrive when she was pregnant with her first child. It was then that she stumbled onto this startling statistic: For the first time in history, this generation of children is expected to have shorter lifespans than their parents. This was Katie’s “hold my beer” moment. So, she put on her journalist hat and started researching – although she used more than Google – and then she started sharing what she learned with others through a blog and podcast. 12 years later, Wellness Mama is still putting out some of the most informative and best-researched content in the health and wellness industry, and they’ve attracted a passionate community of other like-minded people who want to defy expectations and build a better future for the next generation. This is the kind of stuff that really matters for our collective future, so I’m definitely hopping on the Wellness Mama train. What about you? Topics Discussed In This Episode: A generation of children is expected to have shorter lifespans than their parents, for the first time in history Dealing with Hashimoto’s, which is not a sushi restaurant but an autoimmune disease Growing from a blog into an empire How moms can shape the future of the United States and society as a whole Bringing six children into the world & raising them all to be conscious humans What you need to know about birth control A great relationship hack Why more women are suffering from abnormal and painful cycles & what you can do about it What foods you will want to stay away from and eat more of if you are planning to have children or pregnant Bucking the mainstream Western method of birth for more natural births with fewer interventions Dos and don’ts for raising a healthy baby How Katie creates a homeschool designed to stimulate creativity, critical thought, and natural development Finding the time to homeschool as a working mom Raising six kids that aren’t annoying in airports, somehow More about this episode. Doctor Bryan Walsh is back with us today, discussing the diagnostic benefits of a simple blood chemistry. He says the results of common and inexpensive lab panels can be mined for meaningful health information, potentially saving patients a lot of time and money on testing – that is, if you know what these blood markers actually mean (and your average doctor probably doesn’t). Fortunately for us, Bryan knows and loves to teach. In this podcast, he shares a bit about his own journey - what led him to study these basic blood markers, and what now inspires him to teach others.

First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== chunkybearcub asks via twitter @bengreenfield: what do u think of citruaid citrulline amino acid supplement? Helen asks: Please can I ask about my friend who has had a medical with the following areas of concern; Blood count MCHC 31.8g/dL, Gamma Gtp 167 IU/L and LDL Cholesterol 4.6/total chol 6.7. He is keen to know what these figures mean and what he can do to treat naturally/lifestyle changes. Nick asks: I've read that kombucha should not be taken by pregnant women.. why is that? Chuck asks: I'd like to listen to some audio books while I drive and I know you often recommend some good ones. What are your picks for health and life balance/prioritization/efficiency? In my response to Chuck, I recommend he visit my personal blog at http://bengreenfieldtri.blogspot.com/, and I also recommend Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. Steve asks: I am an avid follower of your training and nutritional advice, successful ultra-marathon runner and a neurological physical therapist in the UK. My younger brother is soon to return to the UK. He is morbidly obese, has acquired type 2 diabetes while living abroad, and suffers from associated health problems. I would love to get him on the right path to good health and longevity, but frankly the diabetes issues confuses me. Please could you advise of good training and eating strategies, or some good resources to refer to. In my response to Steve, I recommend he look into low-carbohydrate diabetes diet books written by Dr. Richard Bernstein. Patrick asks: I'm getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out of my head on Thursday, and the dental hygienist has told me some terrifying "facts" about my future nutritional practices. She said I should expect to eat semi-solids like mashed potatoes and applesauce for a couple days. She went on to say that because of the craters (for lack of a better word) that will be left after surgery, I'm forbidden from hard foods for 6 months, including all nuts and seeds! What is your take on this? What are some food suggestions you have that can support 70.3 and IM triathlon training, but won't be as damaging to my dental health? I encourage Patrick to read the SuperHealth diet book by KC Craichy and look into LivingProtein and LivingFuel (read the label), along with this Vitamix/green smoothie video, and the BenGreenfieldFitness Inner Circle. Layla asks: I know CoQ and ubiquinol supplements are recommended for older people for energy and antioxidant benefits, but since these molecules work in the electron transport chain in mitochondria, will they also increase metabolism? I also have a second question. I live somewhere really cold so I'm interested in shifting my metabolism toward heat production. Therefore, I'm wondering if there are any ways for adults to convert white fat to the more metabolically active brown fat. Are there proton uncoupling supplements that act like thermogenin (ucp1)? Craig asks: Whenever I drink from the aero bottle on the bike I get a burning sensation in the back of my throat that feels somewhat like GERD. I know it's not the water source, it's the same one I've been putting in bottles for a decade. What gives? How can I stop it? BTW, great tip using the flexible refrigerator tubing in the aero bottle. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
