Episode 169 - Charlie Weingroff: What Does the Research Actually Tell Us?

It was time to bring back Charlie Weingroff for Episode 169 to talk about some serious stuff.  Charlie and Don had a private conversation a few weeks ago on the subject of scientific research in health, wellness and performance, and where it fits in the selection of protocols, exercises and other key ingredients for optimal performance and health.  While some practitioners are quick to support their own positions with research papers, or argue against another professional's methods using peer reviewed research as a basis, we discuss the nuances of using research in an intelligent manner.  Practical experience, case studies, intuition and research can form a strong foundation of knowledge and skill that can go a long way to bolster the work of a successful practitioner or coach.  Charlie identifies the key elements that go into establishing foundational knowledge and practice.  Dr. Charlie Weingroff is one of the most sought-after professionals world-wide in physical therapy and athletic performance. He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who has worked with countless A-List celebrities, professional athletes, as well as the general population.  Charlie has been Physical Performance Lead and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Canadian Men's National Basketball Team from 2011-2021, where he was the architect along with Sam Gibbs of the performance program that tops all foreign countries with a over 20 active players in the NBA. He often lectures overseas often, and his relationship with Beijing Yanding Trading Company has brought him through mainland China for the last 5 years. Previous roles Charlie has held have been Nike Executive Performance Council, Lead Physical Therapist for the United States Marine Corps Special Operations Command, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA, and Director of Athletic Development for the Roddick-Grunberg Tennis Academy. Charlie has consulted for teams in all major North American sports as well as Manchester United and Manchester City in the English Premiere League.  You can find out more information on Charlie Weingroff below:  Instagram:                   https://www.instagram.com/chweingroff/  Website:                      https://charlieweingroff.com              The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including:  iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217   iHeart Radio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/  Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-show  Spotify –  https://open.spotify.com/show/5Py2SSPA4mntNwYRm0Opri    You can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations:  Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.comTwitter and Instagram - @DonSaladinoYouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino  Derek M. I brought my hubby back because IFYKYK, and there was something cool that happened last Sunday night. But also, he gives insight as to WHY he isn’t particularly vocal about what he does and with whom, and I have to say it’s hella respectful & one of the many reasons professionals in their industry trust him. From actors, professional athletes, & his local clientele, they all know the humility & selfless attitude that Charlie possesses is a rare trait these days. We followed that conversation up with some of the questions asked on my Instagram stories. I think you’ll enjoy it, and goooo sports team!

The reason I chose this title is quite simple. Through this interview with Charlie, we discuss the creation of his T=R DVD series, his day to day with Canada Basketball and how he helped transform that program.  Throughout it all, there is one common theme.  We all need people around us to be successful.  Whether you are a coach understanding that you may need mentoring or some form of help to be able to better assist your athletes, or whether you are an athlete looking to make higher levels.  Yes, absolutely you can put time and effort into your craft and make some advances.  However, by being humble and understanding that there are people around you that have expertise you can benefit from you can create a much greater impact on your career.  Stop pretending you have all the answers and continue to seek them out. Thank YOU for tuning in to another episode of The Elite Development Podcast! Dr. Josh Satterlee, DC talks to Dr. Justin Trosclair DC on A Doctor's Perspective Podcast. Make a clinic gym hybrid your next profitable expansion. Dr. Josh Satterlee goes through the why, how much square feet, fees, equipment, hiring, special certifications, class sizes and much more. You got them pain free, let's keep them with exercise. He has a sad yet interesting story on how he went from engineering and biomechanics to becoming a chiropractor. We discuss his origin story and the evolution of the clinic gym hybrid going from 800 sq ft with two doctors to 4990 sq ft (3000 of it gym space). His first hire to expand services was actually an athletic trainer and not another doctor, hear why. Plus when you hire a bunch of part timers for the gym, he needed a general manager, hear why again. Dr. Satterlee is (TPI) Titleist Performance Institute Certified and then Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) super certified and has been teaching SFMA for many years now. What courses should we take if we want to get in to the clinic gym hybrid?    HINT: Be clear on what joint we are isolating. The ‘mode' of exercise (kettle bells vs bands vs whatever) doesn't matter as much as isolating the joint and motion you are trying to repair. The patient has gotten better and they are looking at you doctor for the next step. The clinic gym model gives you an add on service that the patient already is hinting at. They got pain free, now I want to keep it that way. Cam a small space halt implantation? Can we just do bands, balls, kettle bells, pilates, McGill 3 type stuff etc or do we need high tech big machines? BONUS: on amazon there is a mesh bag with a jump rope, pull up band, mini bands, floor sliders and you would want a 12 inch foam roller and you could get the clinic gym started. Motion in a joint is key to a healthy joint. Another reason to consider the clinic gym model is because often you find a patient is back at a gym again or work etc and 7 weeks later they are back in the office because of a re-injury. Why not have supervised classes (you not teaching them) to keep them injury free? Does the trainer babysit each person? Also, the number reason why Dr. Josh advocates for groups and not 1 on 1… it's not money. The ideal situation is 4 people and 1 trainer for one hour. Every exercise has a few steps to make it easier and harder. How difficult are the sales part ... because cities have gyms down the street. You can also recommend a 4 week group class as an add on during their initial report of findings. Some will sign up before they are out of pain. Also an option is doing a 21 day challenge or a 6 week weight loss challenge. Remember: We build these clinic gyms based on your Medical Expertise, not on the size of your space or equipment in it. Groups build dynamics that keep them coming for more. Dr. Satterlee goes over who to hire and what to pay and it will surprise you just how affordable it is to implement this program.  Reasons to transition into the gym model which can include less paperwork and spreading the liability around.  Dr Josh even opens up about his poor communication in family dynamics and how with effort he was able to turn his marriage around. We speak with Canadian Men’s National Basketball Team Performance Coaches Charlie Weingroff and Karamvir Gill about their experiences working with the team, getting injured athletes back to playing, and how training = rehab.  Visit Basketball Canada or Charlie Weingroff's website for more info.   00:28 Would you like to introduce yourselves? 01:02 Can you talk about your experience working for team Canada basketball and how you approach working together? 03:58 What’s your framework for developing a well-rounded strength and conditioning program? 06:17 At what level of sport or what age do you think it is important for kids to learn strength and conditioning? 08:22 There’s a lot of overlap between rehab programs and strength and conditioning programs. Do you look at those separately or together? How do you approach that? 10:08 What about if a player was recovering from an injury? 12:27 For physios or clinicians who aren’t working closely with a team but may be treating athletes, how would you suggest they communicate with the team coaches/strength coaches? 13:06 How can a physio at a clinic help to integrate their athlete back into their sports program? 16:34 How do you transition athletes back to playing? How do you determine when an athlete is ready to play again? 19:46 Do you use an athletes pain level as an outcome measure? 21:43 Do you incorporate pain science education into what you do with your athletes? 24:08 What are your opinions on biomechanics and how do you incorporate that into an athletes performance? 28:01 What are your thoughts on traditional physio equipment such as therabands? 28:56 Some physio clinics you go to, theres a treatment table, theraband, and weights up to 10 lbs. Do you think that is enough to get an athlete back to a high level of sport? Eg. A basketball player. 30:47 For clinicians who have not been taught a lot of strength and conditioning principles, do you have any recommendations on where they can learn that? 31:34 Do you think that strength training fundamentals should be taught in physio school? 33:02 Is there any technology that you see up and coming in this field? 33:31 Is there anything that you would like clinicians who don’t have a great idea of what you do to know? 37:19 Anything else you’d like to add in?

This week I interview Coach Matt Shadeed of Arkansas State University, someone that I look up to very highly in the strength and conditioning community.   I met coach about a year and a half ago as I took a road trip to ASU, and within 48 hours of being there was blown away by his presence in the weight room and general knowledge of athletic development.     He's a "culture guy."  He believes that the culture you create is the most important thing to success.  I couldn't agree more, and I think this applies to any team or group.  He talks about how he creates a strong culture with simple ideas like energy and consistency.   Physically, he places a premium on his athletes moving correctly. While they are always trying to get stronger, he puts an emphasis on what a lot of people would call correctives and he just calls Human Movements.  He talks about how to incorporate things like glute activation drills, dead bugs, etc. into a high paced training environment and how to do so in the most efficient way possible.   Finally, we talk a little about speed development and resources to learn more.   Here are the three guys he recommends you go and research on human movement and correctives:     Mike Robertson   Eric Cressey   Charlie Weingroff     And here are his suggestions for learning more about speed development:   Look up and read everything by Lee Taft - Father of the Plyo Step     Grab your notepad, because he speaks fast and drops a lot of knowledge.  Enjoy the show.
