Attempts to meld virtual spaces and physical reality so far have struggled to take hold. For all the ingenuity behind projects like Google Glass, the metaverse, and the Apple Vision Pro, they've often felt like technologies in search of a purpose. Professor Nick Kelling, an engineer turned researcher, may have found one. Rebecca and Joe spoke to him about the limitations and possibilities of extended reality in the industrial sector. About our guestNick Kelling is a Professor of Human Factors Psychology at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. His research focuses on the use of VR/XR/AR technologies for training psychomotor skills and the use of technology in environments where education and entertainment goals coexist. In his nearly two decades of research, he has collaborated with college athletics, computing and aerospace companies, amusement parks, zoos, and NASA. Nick is an author of more than 30 published works within education, human factors, and engineering receiving multiple grants from the US National Institute of Health and NASA.Subscribe to our biweekly newsletter. This episode features an interview with Christina Cedillo. Dr. Cedillo is an associate professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, where she recently won the 2024 President's Research Award. Her research lies at the intersections of race, gender, and disability. She examines how legal, scientific, and popular discourses circumscribe the embodied lives of marginalized populations, and how those populations enact rhetorical presence and engage in rehumanization practices using multimodality and digital technologies. In this episode, she discusses a number of her projects. Those include a 2023 special issue of College Composition and Communication focused on cultural rhetorics that Dr. Cedillo coedited, her 2021 Journal of the History of Rhetoric article “Unruly Borders, Bodies, and Blood,” a coauthored piece on critical race theory bans in Texas, and an in-process edited collection entitled Rhetorical Approaches to Critical Embodiment. This interview was conducted at the 2024 Modern Language Association Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you are interested in the 2025 Peck Research on Writing Symposium, which is mentioned in the episode's outro, registration is open as of this episode's release. Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Jennifer Ledwith. She has a business degree from the University of Oklahoma. She is the owner of Scholar Ready, an educational services company. She meets with clients online and her company Scholar Ready tutors Math, conducts personal essay writing workshops, and prepares students for PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams. Houston native, entrepreneur, and educator, Jennifer Ledwith understood from a young age that education and literacy were crucial to success. Again and again, people told her that her mother — a single parent with serious debt and no child support — made too much money for her to get any free money for college. She didn't finish in the top 10% of her high school class (which is academic poison in her home state of Texas). Thankfully, her PSAT scores were high, and she could write the essays to get the money. She knew how to beg for money tactfully in 100 words. She knew why she wanted to get a business degree from the University of Oklahoma. From her junior year of high school to her junior year of college, she wrote essays for over 30 scholarships. She won enough money to pay for tuition and fees. She had the most scholarships when she walked across the stage at graduation. The announcer was still reading them after she had crossed the stage. Even then, she didn't have enough money for school. She worked and worked and continued to apply for scholarships. She graduated from an out-of-state university (University of Oklahoma) with no credit card debt and only $1,000 in student loans. Hey, a girl needs plane tickets. Jennifer Ledwith is the owner of Scholar Ready, an educational services company. She meets with clients online. She also studied Personal Financial Planning at Rice University and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. Company Description *Scholar Ready tutors Math, conducts personal essay writing workshops, and prepares students for PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams. Many of Scholar Ready's students have earned academic scholarships, including full rides to Mississippi Valley State University, Fordham University, Texas A & M University, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake. We strive to instill our students with confidence that is earned and true. We teach them how to learn, how to advocate for what they need in the classroom, how to study, and how to set goals and expectations. We do not allow our students to be limited by experiences of the world they currently inhabit. We back! It's been a crazy few weeks for your boy JBarber. I had extensive water damage to my house and had to shut down my studio for a full renovation. My studio is in shambles! It makes me think of two things. One, the people out in western NC that were devastated by the recent hurricane. The River Arts District was completely underwater for days. We have to continue to support them in any way that we can. Two, I can't help be remember the amazing Legacy Print Weekend at Delita Martin's studio hanging out with some of the best printmakers in the world. Today we got Rabea Ballin and Ann Johnson on the podcast recorded during our fun in Houston. We talked about experimenting in the studio, insight into your friends' art process, taking classes at Anderson Ranch and much more. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ We had the pleasure of speaking with Haley about her impactful Girl Scout Gold Award project. Haley's project focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of distracted walking, particularly in her hometown of Houston, Texas. She observed that many people, especially younger generations, are often engrossed in their phones while walking, which poses significant safety risks. Haley shared how her project was inspired by the lack of attention given to pedestrian safety compared to the numerous campaigns on distracted driving. She created a website, brochure, and a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to educate students, particularly those in driving schools, about the importance of staying aware of their surroundings while walking. Haley's project was a collaborative effort, involving her mother, a video creator who served as her Gold Award advisor, and representatives from the Houston Police Department and Metro Rail. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Haley successfully completed her project with the support of her team. We also discussed the roles of a project advisor and a council mentor, and how Haley's advisor, with her video editing skills, significantly strengthened the project. Haley emphasized the importance of choosing a project advisor who can fill in the gaps in your skill set and provide valuable guidance. Haley reflected on the challenges she faced, including balancing her project with her senior year of high school and overcoming doubts about the project's importance. She shared her favorite memory of the project, which was the collaborative and fun process of editing the PSA video. In addition to her Gold Award project, Haley talked about her long-standing involvement with Girl Scouts, her experiences with volunteering, and a memorable destination trip to Los Angeles where she learned about filmmaking. She highlighted the importance of choosing a project that you are passionate about and the fulfillment that comes from making a positive impact on the community. Haley is currently a senior in college, pursuing a degree in computer science with a focus on data analytics. She plans to continue her involvement in volunteer and charity work while exploring her creative interests. To wrap up the episode, Haley shared her unique way of making s'mores, preferring a lightly toasted marshmallow with a honey graham cracker and a Hershey's bar. In this episode of The Ferment, Adam talks with Kurt Attaway about growing up in the Vineyard, meeting his wife at 4years old, and how his involvement with Fellowship of Christian Athletes evolved into a pastoral role at a local church. Kurt also shares about his career as a Marriage and Family Therapist, the role of humility and emotional health in healthy leadership, and the role of a leader in a healthy team. Kurt Attaway serves as the lead pastor of The Vineyard Church in Pearland, Tx. He earned a BA in Psychology from The University of Texas San Antonio, which he attended on a full athletic scholarship. Playing in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament (aka March Madness) will always be a lifelong highlight, even if they lost to Stanford in the first round. In 2012, he completed a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from University of Houston Clear Lake, and spent 10 years being trained and practicing as a clinician. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
In this episode, I chat with Barbara Gruener, a passionate and connected educator embarking on her 40th year in this field and who is blessed to have grown alongside thousands of children and adults of all ages and stages. This nationally-recognized and sought-after speaker and coach holds a BS from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and two MS degrees from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, but more importantly, she gets to hold and dynamically shape the hearts of the people whom she has the delight to teach, mentor, coach and love. Barbara truly thrives on connecting by heart and unwrapping the present as she works with intention to help school stakeholders and leaders create a climate of acceptance, belonging, compassion and love. She is the author of two Mom's Choice Gold Award-winning books and the proud mom to three amazing adult children. Barbara grew up on her family's dairy farm in Wisconsin, but today she and her husband John call Friendswood, Texas, home. During our conversation, we talked about the role that choice plays in education. Barbara points out that choice is often discussed but done so through the lens of student voice. And while this is important, she acknowledges, it is also limiting. Barbara shared how providing choice communicates trust, a necessary foundation for building strong, healthy relationships. By telling students that we trust their ability to make good choices and that we are available to guide them through inevitable poor choices, we are building relationships. Barbara also suggested that providing choice improves the mental health for our students thereby enhancing our approaches to SEL in our schools. When students feel that they do not have options, their stress levels rise and this leads to a basic physiological response - fight, flight, or freeze. Yes, student choice is important in our classes but it's so much more than amplifying voice. Ready to hear more? Let's go. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thecounternarrative/support

TRIGGER WARNING: I just want to give you a little heads-up that we touched briefly on some topics that might be sensitive for some people. So, if you feel like this could affect you, feel free to take a breather or skip this part. Your well-being is important to us! Hey there! In this podcast episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with the incredible Dr. Emily Fessler. She's not only a faculty member at the University of Houston Clear Lake but also a sex therapist. Dr. Fessler shared her fascinating journey into the world of sex therapy and highlighted how it's all about understanding relationship dynamics rather than just giving out sex tips. We dove deep into the misconceptions and stigma surrounding sex therapy and why sexual education is so important. Dr. Fessler also shed light on the barriers that can hinder our sexual connections and even suggested that planning for intimacy can actually be super beneficial. But that's not all! We also talked about the need for connection and community among therapists. Dr. Fessler is working on an amazing project called the Therapy Collective, which aims to create a supportive community for therapists in Houston. So grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and join us for this enlightening and inspiring conversation. Trust me, you won't want to miss it! About Dr. Emily Fessler : After years of traversing the uphill battle of being a BIPOC woman/mother in academia, and almost two decades as a therapist, I've come to recognize that I can take advantage of the privilege of being comfortable in my own skin. On the outside, that often looks like a pair of ripped jeans and kicking off my heels over to sit crossed-legged in my chair while I sip my iced coffee. On the inside, I realize that I'm lucky because every morning when I open my eyes, I look forward to the day ahead; I love my job, I work with clients that are well-suited to my skill set, and I'm good at what I do. After years of working in the trenches of mental health, I am so happy to work with people in the exact ways that I want to. One of my long-time clients dubbed me “the everyday people's sex therapist” and I can't count on both hands the number of times that I've been cornered at a party by someone that says, “Soo….can I ask you a weird question?” Owner and Principle Therapist at Therapy Co. in Houston, TX; Associate Professor for the University of Houston Clear Lake Website: https://therapyco.net/ Insta: @thefullemilyexperience Topics: 1️⃣ Dr. Emily Fessler's background and journey in becoming a sex therapist 2️⃣Sex Drive versus Sex Break 3️⃣The role of sex therapy in addressing high conflict issues in relationships 4️⃣ Misconceptions and stigma surrounding sex therapy 5️⃣ Barriers to sexual connection and reframing them Own Your Journey! For Dr. Tony Roberson, understanding data is NOT about being a math whiz; it's about developing intuition, and turning your curiosity about the real world into answerable questions and systematic answers.Join us for a very grassy episode from the man who's “in everyone's backyard,” as we get “into the weeds” about every psych major's (initially) least-favorite “weed-out class”: Statistics. Dr. Tony Roberson is an assistant professor in the school psychology specialist program and the combined clinical and school psychology doctoral program at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He obtained his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University's school psychology program and currently holds credentials as a licensed psychologist (LP) and licensed specialist in school psychology (LSSP) in the state of Texas and as a nationally certified school psychologist (NCSP).Dr. Roberson has worked as a school psychologist full-time in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, where he was involved in assessment, intervention, and consultation work with early childhood, elementary, and secondary students and staff. Beyond schools, he also has experience delivering a variety of services in clinic and residential treatment settings. His research interests and expertise broadly concern applied research methodology, data analysis, and improving school-based psychological and behavioral measurement practices to make data more useful for efficiently monitoring risk and wellbeing at both the student and systems levels (e.g., whole classroom, whole school). His current work focuses on refining positively-oriented behavior rating scales for universal screening to help reduce systemic barriers to accessing quality care and promote student behavioral and mental health more equitably across diverse and resource-limited school systems. When Dr. Roberson is not professing, he can likely be found watching an old movie or playing music. He never learned how to ride a bike but has grown to accept that with self-compassion and kindness.Honorable Mentions:-Quantitude podcast https://quantitudepod.org/ or on Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/quantitude/id1484406501 -Dr. Andy Field's books on Discovering Statistics https://www.discoveringstatistics.com/books/discovering-statistics-using-r/-Discovr educational package for R (teach yourself to program!) https://www.discovr.rocks/discovr/ -Dr. James Guffey (Dr. Roberson's stats professor): https://jguffey.sites.truman.edu/ Welcome to The Psychologists Podcast, where we talk about all things psychology through a very personal lens. Research shows that when we experience consistent - quality relationships with others, we live longer, feel better and become more resilient to stress. However, when we don't have access to these types of relationships and are unable to create new ones, the risks to our mental and physical health change astronomically. In fact, many studies have now confirmed that loss of social support and chronic loneliness are more disastrous to our health than smoking, obesity, or other measures of health risk. Putting these facts in the modern context of a global pandemic can be quite alarming. Never before have people experienced this level of isolation. Even as we come back together, many struggle to create new social connections due to the increased anxiety and decreased social skills created by this period of separation. So, what do we do? How do we help ourselves, our children, and our parents navigate social situations during periods of separation? Here to help us explore this timely conversation is NFCC's Clinical Director, Heather Timmis. About our Guest https://finnegancounseling.org/counselors/heather-timmis/ (Heather Timmis) is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor who works with families, couples and individuals ages 3 years and up. We've all heard that question, “Who am I outside of this relationship/marriage”. Singleism, the term for people living life outside of a committed, romantic relationship, is an emerging area of focus on a state of living that many people experience at some point in life. There is so much wonderful momentum behind the concept of living life while single and destigmatizing past views of what “living single” means in order to open us all up to the possibilities of our very own selves! Helping us explore the beauty and challenges of single hood at any age is NFCC's Lead Clinician, Heather Timmis, MA, LMFT-S. Implicit bias is a theory that suggests how we interact and treat others is based on inherited and learned stereotypes and prejudices. The assumptions we make about the world color how we see things and others. When looking at training and work to check a person's implicit bias, the aim is usually to just make them better aware of their biases and how it's affecting their behavior, thoughts, and words. The goal being if you're made aware of your bias and what it's rooted in, you will make a change. But what if you don't? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Scott Richardson, the Chief Diversity and Inclusion officer at the University of Houston Clear Lake about implicit bias, the shortcoming of not holding others accountable, and how this lack of accountability plays out in academic settings with underprepared students.
