Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) Rafah crossing to Egypt opens for the first time since war began Scores of foreign passport holders trapped in Gaza started leaving the war-torn territory as the Rafah crossing to Egypt opened for the first time since the Israeli war on Gaza began on October 7, AFP correspondents reported. Convoys of desperately needed aid have passed between Egypt and Gaza but no people have been allowed to cross. Some 400 foreigners and dual nationals along with some 90 sick and wounded were expected to leave. *) One year on: Despite peace holding on, many Tigrayans struggle to find their feet One year after Ethiopia signed a peace deal with the Tigray People's Liberation Front, ending a brutal conflict that killed hundreds of thousands by some estimates, life in the northern region is slowly limping back to normal. But many Tigrayans say that they were struggling to find their feet after the November 2022 peace agreement, some losing their homes and livelihoods to the war, others grieving family members killed in the conflict. A million people remain displaced across the region, according to the International Organization for Migration, with around 234,000 in Tigray's capital Mekele. *) Bolivia severs ties with Israel as Colombia, Chile recall envoys over Gaza Bolivia has said it had broken diplomatic ties with Israel because of its attacks on Gaza, while neighbours Colombia and Chile recalled their ambassadors to the Middle Eastern country for consultations. The three countries called for a ceasefire, with Bolivia and Chile pushing for the passage of humanitarian aid into the zone and accusing Israel of violating international law. In response, Israel slammed Bolivia's decision to cut diplomatic ties over its war in Gaza after a deadly Hamas attack as a capitulation to "terror". Other Latin American countries, such as Mexico and Brazil, have also called for a ceasefire. *) Live blog: Ukraine reports most extensive Russian shelling this year Ukraine has said that Russia had shelled more than 100 settlements over the last 24 hours - more than in any single day so far this year. Moscow has fired millions of shells on cities, towns and villages along the frontlines since it launched its offensive last February, reducing several across the eastern part of the country to rubble. "Over the last 24 hours, the enemy shelled 118 settlements in 10 regions. This is the highest number of cities and villages that have come under attack since the start of the year," Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said in a post on social media. And finally… *) Saudi ready for summer or winter World Cup in 2034: FA chief Saudi Arabia is prepared to host the 2034 World Cup in summer or winter, its football chief said, after the oil giant became the sole bidder for the tournament. "Of course, we are ready for all possibilities," Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser al Misehal said late on Tuesday at the Asian Football Confederation awards in Doha. Saudi Arabia's successful bid, just 27 days after announcing it, comes less than a year after neighbouring Qatar held the first winter World Cup, a decision that forced a pause to league competitions in Europe.

The Sydney Opera House and Auckland's Sky Tower will be lit up simultaneously to highlight the joint bid from Australia and New Zealand in the final hours before FIFA decides on the venue for the 2023 Women's World Cup.The lights will go on in advance of a decision from the 37-member FIFA Council on Thursday in Europe, expected about 2 a.m. local time Friday on Australia's east coast and 4 a.m. in New Zealand. The co-confederation bid is favoured to win in a two-way contest with Colombia following the late withdrawal of a bid from Japan.Football Federation Australia chief executive James Johnson on Wednesday said the southern bidders were cautiously optimistic."We need to remain focused on finishing the job," Johnson told the Australian Associated Press. "Our goal has been to convince the FIFA Council members who vote on the merits of our bid and we're continuing to work on this into the late hours."Australia spent millions of dollars on its unsuccessful bid for the men's 2022 World Cup in a deflating result for local soccer fans and officials.Johnson is confident the technical evaluations this time give the Australia-New Zealand a strong chance."It's a far more transparent process than what the processes were last time we were in this situation in 2010," Johnson told AAP. "Our focus has been on the merits and not the politics, that's the way we have been from day one."The combined bid performed significantly stronger than Colombia in the FIFA inspection report — scoring 4.1 to 2.8.None of the remaining bidders has ever hosted a senior men's or women's World Cup. Victory for the Australia and New Zealand would be the first time a World Cup has been split across two confederations.Australia joined the Asian Football Confederation after qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, and New Zealand is part of the Oceania Football Confederation. The tournament is due to be staged from July 10-Aug. 20, 2023 and will see the field expanded from 24 to 32 teams.

Today we are joined by Trevor Thompson, a journalist who has reported on association football in Australia and around the world since the 1980s. He is also the author of Playing for Australia: The First Socceroos, Asia, and World Football (Fair Play Publishing, 2018). In our conversation, we discussed the limitation of Australia’s connection with British football in the interwar period, Australia’s Asian football connections, and the future for Australian football in the Asia-Pacific. In Playing for Australia, Thompson investigates the Asian context of some of Australia’s earliest international soccer matches. He notes that Australia’s engagement with Asian football did not start in with their adherence to the Asian Football Confederation in 2006. Instead, Thompson illustrates the long durée history of Australian connections in Asia-Pacific football. In 1922, Australia competed in their first internationals against New Zealand. The next year, a side from China visited Australia touring Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Over the next decade, Australian teams mostly competed against teams from Asia and South Asia and representative teams from Australia also travelled multiple times to the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, and Malaya. Thompson’s revision of Socceroos early years raises tantalizing possibilities for what Australian football might have looked like had its early organizers been more ambitious, cosmopolitan, aware, united, and even more Asian. He argues that Aussie cultural fealty to Great Britain slowed the growth of Aussie football during the crucial decades of its international expansion. The ignorance of early organizers, the disunity of state soccer federations, and the arrogance of the FA caused Australia to miss their chance to compete in the first two World Cups. This book will appeal to readers interested in Australian, Asian, and sports history. Keith Rathbone is a lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He researches twentieth-century French social and cultural history. His manuscript, entitled A Nation in Play: Physical Culture, the State, and Society during France’s Dark Years, 1932-1948, examines physical education and sports in order to better understand civic life under the dual authoritarian systems of the German Occupation and the Vichy Regime. If you have a title to suggest for this podcast, please contact him at keith.rathbone@mq.edu.au. Former Ajax, Barcelona and Netherlands striker Patrick Kluivert, who is now the assistant coach of the Cameroon national team, shares his thoughts on the upcoming men's Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Cameroon was recently stripped of the right to host this year’s tournament as a result of delays and concerns about the potential of violence. The competition will now go ahead in Egypt - and Kluivert believes that will actually benefit the Cameroon team. Ahead of the Asian Cup Final between Qatar and Japan, we hear more about the local fans throwing shoes at the Qatar players during their semi-final victory over the UAE and what the atmosphere was really like inside the stadium. Plus, we'll hear the thoughts of Qatar coach Felix Sanchez on an appeal from the UAE to the Asian Football Confederation, over the eligibility of two players from Qatar. And Ole Gunnar Solksjaer is still unbeaten since taking over as Manchester United coach. Another former United player to return to the club is Giuseppe Rossi. The Australian Foreign Minister, Marise Payne, is currently meeting with Thai officials in Bangkok, advocating for the release of detained Bahraini footballer Hakim al Araibi, who holds official refugee status in Australia. Al Araibi was one of 150 athletes allegedly detained in Bahrain following the Arab Spring in 2011. If not incarcerated and allegedly tortured at that time, Al Araibi would most likely be playing in his national team tonight, in its Asian Cup clash with Thailand. Football's governing body in Australia, the FFA , has called for his release before, and overnight the world governing body FIFA issued a second statement calling for Hakim's immediate return to Australia. Absent in any of the discussions has been the Asian Football Confederation whose president is Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, a member of the Bahraini royal family. Sheikh Salman is a FIFA vice president. He ran as a candidate for the presidency of the world body in 2016. At that time the player, Hakim, who was living in Australia, called for an investigation into the role the Sheikh had played in the jailing and torture of Bahraini athletes who protested his family's rule during the Arab Spring. It is this complicated geopolitical web Australia's Foreign Minister is now trying to extricate Hakim from. Author of The Turbulent World of Middle East Soccer and host of the podcast by the same name, Dr James M Dorsey is also senior fellow at the Rajaratnam school of International Studies, Nanyang University, Singapore.
