How I Became ...

In 2004, Laura joined OMD UK as a fresh-faced graduate, determined to make her mark on the industry. After years of hard work and dedication, she became the agency's first-ever female CEO in December 2020, a remarkable 16-year journey. The unique brand of leadership that Laura has displayed has enabled her to make remarkable progress and achieve incredible business success. After attending Leeds University, Laura wasn't sure what career she wanted to pursue. But when she met another graduate whilst travelling, he spoke about a placement programme in advertising that sparked her interest. When Laura returned from her travels, she went to WHSmith and bought a copy of Campaign Magazine. She flipped to the back to find the graduate jobs, one being for OMD. She applied and was invited to a graduate day, which was essentially like X-Factor. Graduates had to go through various rounds of interviews and presentations, and by the end of the day, everyone was split into two rooms - those going through and those not. Laura made it to the room that was going through and started as a graduate planner. Not long after, Laura found herself increasingly drawn to the CEO of OMD. She was captivated by the role and ambition, and soon made it her mission to one day become the CEO of the company. She was determined to make her dream a reality. Laura moved up the ranks, becoming Communications Planner to Associate Director and then a side step, becoming Client Services Director at Drum OMG. Laura would now be working with various agencies and clients, along with learning more about the creative and production side of advertising. Despite enjoying this new role, Laura felt as if she had hit a plateau. Laura would then go on to become Client Partner. Laura decided to take a chance and pitch the idea of her becoming the Managing Director of OMD to her boss. Despite her nerves, she went through with the meeting and was delighted when her boss agreed. This was one of the proudest moments of Laura's career. After years of dreaming, Laura's vision finally came true in December 2020 when she was appointed CEO of OMD. Although she was excited, she was also a bit apprehensive about taking on the role. She created a 90-day plan and began her journey as CEO in January 2021. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Laura eventually found her footing and was able to get back into the office and interact with clients. She soon realised that this was exactly what she had been dreaming of. With each passing day, Laura felt more and more confident that she had made the right decision in taking on this role. Laura is a firm believer in showing that women and mothers can be successful in senior leadership roles while still being true to themselves. Laura is also an advocate for encouraging and supporting people from underrepresented groups to help shape the future of the media industry. To hear Laura's advice on motherhood, achieving your dreams (no matter how big they are) and letting your authentic self shine, listen to this episode of ‘How I Became'. Watch on YouTube Follow us @HOWIBECAME__ for guest insights not on the podcast We're on Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook Unity & Motion - A London based production company specialising in commercials and branded content Email: info@weunify.co.uk This is a UNIFY Podcast. Don't miss his discussion of the culture of integrity and accountability his team built. This week's show is all about persevering through obstacles, building and maintaining tools to be able to contribute to our relationships. Take a step back, examine your goal's guideposts, and keep going!Episode Quotes:On how they manage work from home during the pandemic:“We determined that productivity was just fine from working from home versus working in the office. We've had a very flexible policy since then, if you feel comfortable coming into the office, come into the office, we'd love to see you. If you feel more comfortable working at home and not having to brave commute then stay at home do that. Now having said that, we have accountability. No one gets a free pass on making sure they get their job done, but really we want people to feel comfortable and be able to feel like they have the best opportunity to be able to be successful.”His thoughts on perseverance:“We're all persevering through something and as we think about the obstacles in front of us, we ask, “How do we build and maintain tools to be able to look at how effective and efficient we are?” As well as how much we're contributing to our relationships in our lives? That to me is what perseverance is. Taking a step back, looking at your guideposts, making sure that you're between them, and then continuing on that journey of trying to get to your goals.”What does he think of having hope as one of the school's core values?“Hope is, I think, germane to everything we're trying to accomplish. Like we hope for a good outcome. We hope to be able to make it. We hope to be able to have success. We hope for all these things. Now we put in place, good things to be able to allow us to be able to accomplish those things. Either process, people, relationships, or whatever to be able to accomplish it. But in the end, I think it's hope that drives humanity.”Books He's Been Reading:How to Become CEO by Jeffrey FoxNecromancerProjects He's Involved With:Get Seeded: Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute

Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand. This week he’s joined by Blair Turnbull, CEO of Tower Insurance. One of the things we get asked for on this podcast is to hear from people involved in business who aren’t necessarily all-or-nothing entrepreneurs. So this year we’re sharing a few more stories of people doing interesting, big and different things in business. This week's guest is one such example – someone who recently returned home to New Zealand to take on the CEO role at one of our big listed insurance companies.Blair Turnbull had a big role at ASB before heading overseas and working with Aviva – an insurer out of London with 30 million-plus customers. Blair led digital, retail and innovation functions, rising to be looking after 15 million customers before being shoulder-tapped to come back home to run Tower. To learn a bit about how the insurance game works, what it takes to grow into a CEO role, and what innovation is coming our way in insurance, Blair Turnbull joined Business is Boring for a chat. Time is your most valuable asset. Are you wasting it? Chris Heller, CEO of Keller-Williams, rose to the top through discipline – a muscle that you need to develop to make the most out of your time. You develop discipline by creating better habits. Chris created habits that improved his mindset and maintained his health. Mindset is critical for overcoming fear and taking action. One of the most important mindset shifts that Chris made as part of KW was learning to succeed through others. When you have the right people, the fear of losing control transforms into relief.   Even with support, you can’t achieve everything you want to accomplish in your life and your business if you’re health isn’t close to 100%. You can’t let your health fall through the cracks when you are focusing on your business. If you want to achieve more, while working less, then you need the right habits to develop your discipline muscle. Chris Heller is here to show you how.   Discussed in this episode: 2:45 - How does Chris teach people to control their calendar? 6:45 - Everybody inside the real estate world knows that lead generation is the ONE thing that makes everything else easier or unnecessary, but why is it so hard for them to do it? 10:25 - When you focus on your business, it’s easy for your health to fall through the cracks. How did Chris make health a habit? 14:40 - The idea of succeeding through others: is it something that came naturally to Chris or is it something he had to work at? 15:55 - People hear they should succeed through others, they know they should succeed through others, yet for some reason there’s something that holds them back. If you could give them ONE thing to help them pave that way, what does that look like? 17:10 - How did Chris become the type of person that talent wants to work for, and are willing to take a discount to do it?   CONTEST -  Get a FREE digital copy of the bestselling book The ONE Thing!
