Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss John Barbour's epic poem The Brus, or Bruce, which he wrote c1375. The Brus is the earliest surviving poem in Older Scots and the only source of many of the stories of King Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329), popularly known as Robert the Bruce, and his victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314. In almost 14,000 lines of rhyming couplets, Barbour distilled the aspects of the Bruce's history most relevant for his own time under Robert II (1316-1390), the Bruce's grandson and the first of the Stewart kings, when the mood was for a new war against England after decades of military disasters. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 17, 2025 is: fugitive • FYOO-juh-tiv • noun Fugitive refers to a person who runs away to avoid being captured or arrested. // The FBI regularly updates and circulates its list of most wanted fugitives, and asks communities where they might be seen to be careful and on the lookout. See the entry > Examples: “The automated plate readers, as they are known, enable authorities to track when vehicles of interest pass through certain intersections. The devices can also be mounted on police cars, allowing officers to sweep up troves of license plate data as they drive around. Fugitive entered English as both a noun and an adjective in the 14th century, coming ultimately from the Latin verb fugere, meaning “to flee.” As a noun, it originally referred, as it still does today, to someone who flees a country or location to escape persecution or danger, as from war, making it synonymous with another fugere descendent, refugee. The noun soon expanded beyond those fleeing peril to individuals (such as suspects, witnesses, or defendants) trying to elude law enforcement especially by fleeing the pertinent jurisdiction. The adjective fugitive describes those literally running away or intending flight, but also has multiple figurative uses, being applied to that which is elusive, of short duration, or of transient interest, among other things.

A third of young workers in Australia are being paid less than $15 an hour - that's almost ten dollars below the minimum hourly wage. It's one of the key findings of a Melbourne University report showing 15 to 30 year olds are experiencing widespread breaches of labour laws. We're sorry to say you must cast your eyes down to fully understand abject: in Middle English the word described those lowly ones who are rejected and cast out. By the 15th century, it was applied as it still is today to anything that has sunk to, or exists in, a low state or condition; in modern use it often comes before the words poverty, misery, and failure. Applied to words like surrender and apology, it connotes hopelessness and humility. The word's Latin source is the verb abicere, meaning “to throw away, throw down, overcome, or abandon.” Like reject, its ultimate root is the Latin verb jacere, meaning “to throw.” Subject is also from jacere, and we'll leave you with that word as a way to change the subject.

The Israeli military strike on southern Syria this week is “concerning” in view of the “unexpected opportunity” for a potential peace agreement with the new government there, Israel’s former deputy security adviser Chuck Freilich said on the Haaretz Podcast. On Tuesday, the IDF struck Syrian army forces that had entered the city of Sweida to prevent harm to Druze communities and ensure the demilitarization of the area. The action was strongly denounced by the Syrian government. While Freilich said he understands that it was “part of the post-October 7 policy of not allowing potential threats to evolve on any of Israel's borders,” he believed the limited nature of the Syrian military intervention and the “channels of communication” that now exist could have been “used to reach some understanding.” Instead, he said, the Netanyahu government “seems to be taking a really absolutist approach.” Freilich told podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer in their conversation that in his view, the government headed by President Ahmed al-Sharaa is “saying the right things” regarding Israel and, more importantly, backing up their words with actions. “They’re talking to us, and they seem to be willing to reach some sort of agreement,” he said, noting that they refrained from condemning Israel’s attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities and “has thrown the Iranians and Hezbollah out of Syria. They are strongly anti-Iranian, probably as much as we are. So there’s a meeting of interests here that we should be really working to take advantage of.” “The fact that this is going on is absolutely mind-boggling, if one considers the history between Israel and Syria.” Freilich said that he would be “thrilled” to see U.S. President Donald Trump’s vision of Syria joining the Abraham Accords manifest in the near future, but he cautioned that it may be “a bridge too far” at the moment, and a more limited non-belligerence treaty is more realistic in the short-term. Freilich also discussed the aftermath of the 12-day Israel-Iran war on the podcast, explaining that the most conservative estimates establish that the attack on Iranian nuclear sites set the country’s nuclearization program back by several years. The only way to ensure long-term protection from a nuclear Iran, he emphasized, is diplomacy. “A nuclear deal is the only way that we can ensure that they don't cross the threshold for the long-term. Military action has now gained up to four years, but if they want to reconstitute they can because they have the know-how. Papusza / Bronisława Wajs. Tears of Blood: A Poet's Witness Account of the Nazi Genocide of Roma (Brill, 2024) is nothing less of an academic, literary, and historical miracle. It is dedicated to a key figure of Romani literature, Bronisława Wajs, also known as Papusza. This book offers—for the very first time in history—the full version of Papusza's key work, Tears of Blood, which was considered lost for seventy years and circulated only in a highly reduced copy. This poem is a unique account by a woman about the Roma Holocaust in Eastern Europe during WWII. Beyond this important historical and literary document, the book also provides literary translations of this manuscript into several languages, including English, and has chapters written by leading researchers of Romani Studies who comment on the history of this text and the challenges behind making it available to the broader public. It took the team over three decades to locate the manuscript, transcribe it, translate it, and fill in the gaps in its history. Volha Bartash is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Münster in Germany and a co-convenor of the network “Margins of Memory: Cultures and Politics of Non-Hegemonic Remembrance.”  Tomasz Kamusella is Reader in Modern Central and Eastern European History at the University of St Andrews, whose work focuses on language politics and nationalism. Shrubs contributed Bullfighters Bones to the NME's famous C86 album. A further 12", Blackmailer followed towards the end of the year, with debut album Take Me Aside for a Midnight Harangue hitting the shops in July 1987. With the collapse of the Ron Johnson label and the indie distribution network The Cartel, several hundred copies of "Harangue" were incinerated, much to Hobbs' annoyance. Shrubs signed with the Hertfordshire-based Public Domain label for a studio/live 12", Another Age, and second and final album Vessels of the Heart, both in 1988, after which the band split. Hobbs went on to form Mecca, who toured the former Soviet Union with Nitzer Ebb and others, and subsequently Infidel, along with current Pere Ubu guitarist Keith Moliné and Nico's former drummer Graham Dowdall (a.k.a. Dids), at the same time carrying on in artist management. He carries on making music solo and with different groups under the name of Nikolai Galen.

Catherine Con Morse's debut novel, The Notes, is a 2025 Chinese American Librarians Association Best Book Honorable Mention for Young Adult Fiction, a 2026 Panda Book Award nominee, and was shortlisted for the CRAFT First Chapters contest. A Kundiman fellow, Catherine received her MFA from Boston University, where she taught undergraduate creative writing for several years. This year's 33rd issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine announced on Wednesday that Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sōsō no Frieren) manga revealed will return from its hiatus in the magazine's next issue on July 23.The manga entered its hiatus in January.The series had just returned from an earlier hiatus in the magazine's combined second and third 2025 issue last December, after taking a two weeks off starting in late November. The manga took another hiatus from May-August 2024.Yamada and Abe launched the ongoing manga in Weekly Shonen Sunday in April 2020. The series also went on hiatus in January 2023 and returned to serialization in March 2023. Shogakukan published the manga's first compiled book volume in August 2020, and released the 14th volume on March 18. Female Pelvic Pain and Its Relationship to Emotions & Trauma Dr. Adriana Martí   When sex hurts, experts still have tons of unanswered questions. Since we don't have much accurate data on the various conditions that make intercourse painful, women often suffer in silence.   To help sort this out, Dr. Diana Wiley, a sex therapist, and Dr. Adriana Martí, a pain psychologist, had an informative conversation.   Dr. Martí uses the biopsychosocial model, which has emerged as the most comprehensive framework for understanding pain. Coming from a family of physicians, Dr. Marti understood the value of treating the physical body, but she also saw where the biomedical model falls short. That insight led her to embrace integrative, mind-body approaches to care especially for those living with chronic illness or pain.   The level of a patient's anger has been shown to be an important predictor of chronic pain symptoms, and cultivating compassion has been shown to positively influence how we process emotions, thus reducing the tendency toward negativity, including anger.   Psychological or emotional factors are often involved. Stress, anxiety, depression, guilt, a history of sexual abuse, an upsetting pelvic exam in the past, or relationship troubles can also be at the root of sexual pain. Some women experience vaginismus—an involuntary clenching of vaginal muscles that prevents penetration. Vaginismus is especially common among women who associate their vaginal area with fear or physical trauma.   Both the sex therapist and the health psychologist want to include the patient's partner at some point in the therapeutic process. For many couples who have been dealing with a confusing, undefined issue, there is a buildup of resentment and anger. Men often fear hurting their partner. Pleasure can become pain. It is so easy for couples to blame each other and lose sight of the fact that the real problem is a physiological condition, not their partner.   Dr. Martí also notes the cultural piece: the expectations related to the family. How does the family relate to pain? In one case, the mother and the grandmother both had pelvic pain. Sometimes the woman gets sucked into the “sick role,” which has the benefit of lowered expectations from the patient, but is ultimately not emotionally healthy.   Can pain be unlearned? A study led by Yoni Ashar, PhD, which was published in JAMA Psychiatry, was the first clinical trial of pain reprocessing therapy (PRT). PRT was developed by psychotherapist Alan Gordon to treat primary chronic back pain. Complete details can be found in his book, The Way Out: A Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Healing Chronic Pain.   There are additional fixes, such as vaginal estrogen or other medicines or creams. Also, pelvic floor therapy (provided by a specially trained physical therapist) can help control vaginal muscles. “Down training” uses a combination of mindfulness, diaphragmatic breathing, meditation, stretching, and visualization to help calm the nervous system.     The couple in therapy may be asked to do “outercourse” homework (non-penetrative sex). Some couples put too much focus on penetrative sex and neglect other fun, equally pleasurable sexual activities. Outercourse is a great option because it helps women forget there's a goal, so they can just enjoy the feelings and sensations of the ride! It gets both people out of their brains and into their bodies.   Dr. Martí has a private practice where she works with individuals and couples in both English and Spanish. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade three years ago, the question of abortion's legality and availability returned to the states. As of now, abortion remains broadly legal in more than 30 states and Washington, D.C. In some, like Kansas, Missouri and Montana, abortion is still legal largely because of voters. Over the course of the 1500s, English spelling started to become standardized, but the pronunciation of the language continued to change. By the early 1600s, English scholars noticed that spellings no longer reflected the way words were pronounced, and they recommended phonetic reforms. In this episode, we examine how English spelling reformers described the pronunciation of English in the early 1600s, and we also explore how Modern English spellings reflect the phonetic history of words.

For decades, residents of the small city of Newburgh, New York, were unknowingly drinking water contaminated with toxic PFAS—also known as forever chemicals. Next, we're joined by Shannon Everrett, founder of American Truckers United, who has created a grassroots movement to warn about the flood of foreign truck drivers taking over the industry. This is both a labor and safety concern. They are driving down wages and supplanting the American trucker, but at the same time, many are not proficient in English and did not undergo the proper training. The Great Tantra of Vajrasattva is a Root Tantra of the Space Section first translated into Tibetan in the 8th Century by Vairochana Rakshita, a famous translator during the early period of Buddhism in Tibet. This tantra is one of a handful of the earliest translations of Ati Yoga teachings into the Tibetan language, where they were preserved long after the originals disappeared in India, possibly during the Islamic invasions. Vairochana did not attribute these Ati Yoga source texts to himself, but rather to Garab Dorje, who was revered as a full emanation of Vajrasattva in human form. Vairochana's translations stand on their own as jewels of Wisdom, the core teaching being always the same: the luminous, natural, non-dual mind of Great Perfection itself.
