As people who have faith, should loss affect us with the same magnitude or heaviness?A few months after my mom passed away, I did an online search for “books on faith and grief”. When Kate J. Meyer's book “Faith Doesn't Erase Grief” came up, I found myself clicking to buy it immediately. As I read even the first few pages of the book, not only did I know I needed to have Kate on the podcast, but it truly changed my grief journey for the better. This conversation with Kate about the intersection of faith and grief was beautifully important and honest. Some of the questions we talk about are…How we can wrestle with God about the pain of loss while also still having great hopeHow we can be better in talking about the impact grief has on those who remainHow people can integrate their grief with everyday life as more time passesHow to anticipate grief in a healthy wayHow someone can support a grieving friendHow to express emotion in a way that isn't awkward or uncomfortableThis conversation truly matters for those who are walking through grief and those who haven't had to yet. I also can't recommend Kate's book highly enough. Fast forward a friendship by hosting friends for a meal! In episode 22 of Dear Nina, I'm taking on two topics, with one topic logically leading to the other. How to go from being casual acquaintances to actually considering someone a friendHow to make it easier to have people over for a mealI have the only sensible guest to handle this challenge, and that is my good friend, Debra Arbit. In addition to being a consultant for women business owners, and raising three young kids, Debra has hosted TONS of friends and acquaintances at her house for meals over the past handful of years (pre-Covid). And then at some point when it became clear she couldn't have people over like she used to, Debra took her love for cooking onto her instagram account, @fortheloveofcookbooks, where she brought her longtime passion for cooking her way through entire cookbooks and does much of it live on her stories. Before Debra and I discussed 10 tips for hosting, we told our friendship story, which is a great example of taking a casual friendship to the next level. Then we gave 10 solid tips for making it easier to host friends for meals, something each of us have a lot of experience doing at this point in our lives. We hope our ideas help. Many writers like to work within one genre or niche. They write thriller books or police procedurals, or mystery books. Other writers find working within one genre or niche confining, and they like to try different types of writing to see where it takes them. In this episode, I recently had the chance to catch up with Jenn Ashton, and she's done just that. She's published poetry, children's books, journalism, historical research, technical manuals, and she's also an accomplished visual artist. I had many questions for Jenn about her creative ventures and whether other projects like painting can improve your writing. In this episode, we discuss:Balancing different creative outletsGetting into a creative flowSharing stories with a beta group before publishingGiving helpful feedback to a friendHow to earn a living while following your creative dreamThe benefit of entering writing competitionsAdvice for writers looking to get publishedResources:People Like FrankNaNoWriMoSubmittable Jennifer Ashton Jennifer Ashton ArtSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/becomeawritertoday)

We have access to more information than ever. Yet, we still base most of our decisions on guesses, gut feelings, outdated information. Why? Because we do not take our time to gather and understand the evidence behind. The gap between available information and the decisions we take is simply too wide - in our private lives, as well as in organisations. But, if we change that, we will make better informed decisions with better outcomes. So, how do you make better decisions? The best way is to start using an evidence-based approach. Evidence-based practice does not mean reading a lot of boring research. That means to take a structured approach to your decision making, use several sources, and critically judge the quality of the information. My guest today, Rob Briner, is a front person in the evidence-based practice movement. He is a professor in organisational psychology at Queen Mary University in London and Scientific Director in the Centre for Evidence-based Management. He will help you make better decisions. ROB TALKS ABOUTWhy we see a big gap between evidence and practiceA clear guide as to how you make a more informed decisionWhy Google Scholar is your new best friendHow you can use the evidence-based practice to make better decisions for your organisation

Alex sits down with her childhood friend, Amy, to discuss her college friendships and the life-long bonds created by experiencing a transformative time in life together. Amy shares how her large group of college friends came to be so close, even after 13 years. From college dorm rooms to wedding alters, Amy shares tips on how to maintain healthy relationships with friends, how to navigate disagreements, breakups, and moving distances. She encourages us to make memories with friends, whether via a big vacation or by simply sharing meals. And emphasizes the importance of being open to new people, being true to yourself, and not putting too much pressure on yourself. You can find her in Instagram @amyygator.Show notes:Intro to Amy SutjahjoAlex and Amy’s childhood history and living togetherAmy’s social circles: high school, college, family, husband's friends, professional friends.College is a transformative time. Lots of freedom, close proximity in dorms & cafeteriasClose proximity & consistency makes building memories easier. Takes a bit more time to make sure to continue making memories despite some distance.Alex has a different relationship with her college friends because of lack of proximity & consistency post-collegeBonding through dorms, partying, dining hall, library, gym, and guitar hero.Value of inclusive behavior among single and coupled friendsDeveloping strong bonds with each person in a group is important and can lead to differences of opinions, but it’s important each person comes to their own conclusion.Larger groups of friends invite diverse personalities, which cause disagreements sometimesImportance of treating each other with mutual respect despite opposing opinionsThere doesn’t have to be a dramatic change in defining the change of the relationship (for friends). Sometimes it’s ok to let friends change as your life changesHow Amy’s friends gave her the room to form her own opinion about a particularly “unhealthy” friendHow to be considerate when a friend-couple breaks up, and how to split time, and communicate clearlyPressures of “picking sides” after a breakup can be present, but it depends on each person’s individual relationship/ friendshipValue of “going through life together”, celebrating milestones, and helping each other through tough times.Amy’s 10 year vision for her and her friends: homes, children, petsWhether Amy and her friends plan on having kids at the same time. It would be nice, but depends on peoples’ preferences.Amy’s scenario planning for how to hang with friends while balancing childcareFinal advice: find people with similar core values, people that you feel comfortable with, and feel like you can be yourself around. Make memories together, whether taking a trip, or eating fast food and chatting for hours- memories can be created in so many different ways. In Episode 10 of Business Breakthrough Thursdays, mental toughness expert Matt Phillips speaks about the true business differentiator. Matt, a former pro athlete, helps business leaders transform their teams and crush their strategic goals. His focus is the one differentiator that makes the difference between business success and failure: mental toughness. Learn:What mental toughness is and why it is important How to build a strong teamWhy fear is your friendHow to respond instead of reactWhat athletes can teach business leaders about perseverance and resiliencyHow to apply the "film review" concept to address performance issuesHow baseball can teach you to accept failure (a .300 batting average means you fail 7 out of 10 times)The five elements of mental toughness, according to Matt, are:ConfidenceFocusEmotional controlEnergyConsistent actionsThese five elements are instilled in athletes by their coach. Matt coaches business leaders to use these same five elements in their day-to-day lives to achieve success. He offers three big pieces of advice in the podcast:Belief in yourself trumps all other beliefsBe direct, and be bluntTake care of yourself first during your entrepreneurial journeyMatt Phillips is the Founder & CEO of Pro Athlete Advantage, and is regarded as one of the leading experts on human performance and mental toughness development in the world. A former professional baseball player, Matt discovered that peak performance requires a dominant “inner game”. Using his Mental Toughness approach, Matt teaches business leaders and professional athletes how to systematically build their confidence, focus, emotional control, and energy so they can take their game to the next level. Matt counsels corporations on how to build high performance leaders and teams to crush their financial and strategic goals. His unique business model, a five-step process called "Ignite Your Mindset," is a mental toughness program that helps corporate teams and leaders increase their self-confidence so they take consistent action towards their goals, get laser-focused on hitting their numbers and results, master their emotions, and make sure they have high energy every day so they come to work to perform at the peak of their capabilities.
Personally I've always struggled being present. I've spent most of my life living in the past or the future. Being ‘mindful' always felt like an alien concept to me. But slowly over the past few years, through Tapping I've become more present and aware of my own emotions, but I realise I've a long way to go before I fully engage with this practice.I felt very drawn to tapping into Mindfulness a bit further and could not think of a better person to talk to than Jane. She's from Dublin and we met nearly 3 years ago and have kept in touch ever since. She has such a calming influence and I hope you can take some nuggets out of this conversation that will help you become more aware and present in your daily life. This was recorded in early September in between lock downs for our Irish friends (who as of 26th October are in their second national lock down). The crossroads of “should” and “must” is a place we all come to eventually, though many don't recognize it when it comes OR the importance of the decisions we make once we are there. Elle Luna is the one who coined the phrase, and to her, this crossroads is the place where each of us make one of life's most important decisions. Will we do what we “MUST” - what we are called and compelled to do? Or will we bow to the “SHOULDS” of expectation and obligation assigned to us by society, family, and our own beliefs - and play a much smaller game? Elle is one of our most requested guests so it's a pleasure to finally have her on the show. She tells her own story to explain how her own encounter with the crossroads of should and must took place. Her journey includes…A recurring dreamA turning-point conversation with a good friendHow she took that friend's crazy-sounding advice, andHow that bold decision led to her discover the deeper purpose of her life: PAINTINGIn her book, “The Crossroads of Should and Must,” Elle writes...“It's here, standing at the crossroads of should and must that we feel the enormous reality of our fears and expectations from others, and this is the moment when many of us decide against following our intuition, turning away from that place where nothing is guaranteed, nothing is known, and everything is possible.” You're going to enjoy Elle's story because though the details are different, it's the story all of us will one day experience. And you'll be inspired by how Elle made her way through the twists and turns, cautiously approached her crossroads of should and must, and made the decision that changed everything for her.Outline of This Episode[2:22] The recurring dream that led Elle to the crossroads of should and must[7:38] Life before the dream: the journey that influenced the way Elle sees the world[12:30] Elle's perspective about how to tap into wisdom larger than yourself[19:12] Lessons learned working at Ideo[27:56] How to tap into your “musts” and limit the impact of your “shoulds”[35:27] The rock bottom moments Elle experienced along the way (to show you that you're not alone)[40:20] The moment Srinivas thought about quitting everything - and Elle's perspective[52:25] What Elle believes makes somebody or something unmistakeableRejection can be a gift. It was for ElleMany of the people in Elle's family had chosen careers in the legal profession, so both she and the members of her family assumed she would take the same path. But she was rejected from law school. Not once. Not twice. But every time she applied.Elle says it seemed like an impossible turn of events because her grades and LSAT scores were substantial enough to earn a place in the student body of at least one of the institutions to which she'd applied. Simply put - it didn't make sense. It was a hard blow. She cried. A lot. But that point of rejection opened her up to other possibilities that she'd not even considered. Listen to hear how she came to see the rejection as a gift, landed enviable positions working on the teams that developed Mailbox and Uber, and took a role as part of the incredible creative community known as Ideo - one of the coolest companies in the world. On this episode of #UnmistakableCreative, @ElleLuna shares some of the many lessons she learned as part of the team at @Ideo - and how they have served her long-term. #creatives #creativity #calling #purposeClick to TweetLessons learned at Ideo - and how they have served Elle long-termElle's time as part of the Ideo team was...
