Send us a textFirst, I want to thank our former guest, Greg Offner, for making today's episode possible!!! Let's get to today's episode.....So....What does it mean to truly honor your family name while encouraging each child's unique identity? This question lies at the heart of my conversation with Jason Hewlett, whose journey from Las Vegas impersonator to corporate speaker offers surprising insights into authentic fatherhood.  As a Hall of Fame speaker, he values the way to become a Hall of Fame dad instead.Jason's approach to raising his four remarkably diverse children reveals a masterclass in balancing values with freedom. His daughter Ella traveled solo across Italy, New Zealand, and Australia as a teenage au pair. His son Redford graduated as student body president with academic honors. Romney pivoted from basketball to bodybuilding when competition grew fierce. And thirteen-year-old Royal shows natural talent across multiple domains. Each child embodies the Hewlett name differently, yet powerfully. The secret? Jason's "ICM Process" - Identify, Clarify, and Magnify - helps family members discover their unique "signature moves." Rather than projecting expectations, he creates space for authentic growth. When his sons cut bowl-shaped haircuts for their yearbook photos (which subsequently went viral), Jason celebrated their creativity instead of squashing it. This pattern of encouragement traces back to his own childhood, when his parents supported his Dennis Rodman impersonations at Utah Jazz games despite the raised eyebrows. Most powerful was Jason's vulnerable sharing about reconciling with his father after years of estrangement. Their relationship healed through a shared mission developing a heart supplement that saved his father's life, demonstrating how parental relationships can transform at any stage.  They know are in business together with a  powerful new supplement drink called, "Cardio Miracle."Whether you're struggling to connect with your children's interests or seeking to balance family identity with individual expression, Jason's wisdom offers a roadmap for creating what he beautifully describes as "an eternal family." Listen now and discover how to honor your name while lighting unique paths for each family member. Please don't forget to leave us a review wherever you consume your podcasts! This week we are joined by Dr.  Olivier Jutel, a lecturer in the Department of Media, Film & Communication at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. His scholarly focus is in communication studies and media theory, particularly around populism, digital media, political economy, and critical theory. Travis and Julian chat with Olivier about his iconoclastic take on the paradigms that have dominated U.S. technology and communications policy since 2016. Olivier argues that fear of foreign influence has been leveraged by a coalition of Silicon Valley firms, national‑security agencies and allied think‑tanks to deflect structural reform of platforms. Drawing on Cold‑War communication theory, this coalition frames all online conflict as “information warfare,” treating citizens as passive targets for behavioral manipulation while ignoring deeper political‑economic drivers of democratic decay. Jutel retraces the military origins of mass‑communication research, critiques Shoshana Zuboff's “surveillance capitalism” thesis, and dissects the role of high‑profile disinfo professionals whose methods, he contends, don't question the core assumptions of tech industry platforms and national‑security priorities. Olivier concludes that while this disinformation framework is past its heyday, its war‑like view of social life persists, empowering actors such as Palantir while sidelining antitrust and public‑interest remedies. The solution? A shift toward true democratic governance of digital infrastructure. “I have a regular chat with a friend of mine in New Zealand. He's a tetraplegic and a musician, so he invents his own music instruments that he can play with his limited motion, and he can send me his instrument over MIDI to where I am across the ocean and we can play together and we can have an engagement. It's not possible for him to come to see me in Europe. It would be so expensive, and a lot of work. So, you know, thank God there's the internet for him, you know. He gets to participate, he has remote concerts, he still plays with his friends. It's really special.” – Rebekah Wilson This episode is the second half of my conversation with Source Elements CEO and remote collaboration specialist Rebekah Wilson as we discuss how physics and neurology collide when it comes to reducing latency, how the pandemic transformed online music collaboration and gave rise to today's generation of at-home musicians, and where Rebekah sees sound, technology, and music itself heading in the future, over both the coming decades and even generations from now. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit audiobrandingpodcast.com, where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available, along with other interesting bits of audio-related news. Both those things really help, and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. (0:00:01) - Impact of Latency on Music CollaborationWe continue our talk about the science of latency, and Rebekah explains how it impacts music in ways that our brains only dimly perceive. “If you add a little bit of latency onto that,” she says, “music's like, one, two... three… music's not very friendly to that [sort of] latency.” She tells us more about how our brains unconsciously adapt to latency, and how technology relies both on improving speed and taking advantage of our ability to filter out information gaps. “What's happening is that you're anticipating it based on this model that's in your brain,” Rebekah explains. “For example, every time you look at a wall or your surroundings, if it's not moving, your brain's not processing it.”(0:06:02) - Advancements in Remote Music CollaborationShe talks about how the COVID-19 pandemic's lockdown phase led to a boom in online collaboration, some of which continues to thrive today. “There remained a group of people,” she says, “a small group of people, you know, scattered around the world… who were like, ‘You know what? Some interesting things came out of this. Some interesting artistic development is possible here and it's worth pursuing.” We discuss the technical and creative innovations that emerged from that period, and where they might lead in the years to come as we continue to innovate. “What we love as humans,” Rebekah says, “is to seek new forms of expression. This is what we do, we're adventurers. So we go out, we go into the desert, we go out into the oceans, and we look for where something new is. And you know, music and performance and being together on the internet is still very new for us as humans.”(0:12:42) - Expanding Music Collaboration With TechnologyOur conversation wraps up as we continue to talk about online collaboration and creative efforts that can now

Send me a messageIn this episode of Climate Confident, I spoke with Ori Shaashua, Co-founder and CCO of Gigablue, a marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) company taking a radically scalable approach to the carbon challenge.Gigablue's MCFS (Marine Carbon Fixation and Sequestration) method taps into the ocean's natural carbon cycle by cultivating phytoplankton in floating substrates and using gravity, not high-energy processes, to sink captured CO₂ to deep-sea sediment for thousands of years. It's a low-energy, high-durability method that's already secured the largest ocean carbon removal offtake to date.We unpack why mCDR matters, how it compares to nature-based and tech-heavy CDR approaches, and what makes ocean deserts, like those off the coast of New Zealand, ideal sites for safe and measurable sequestration. Ori also outlines their scale-up pathway: from kiloton removals today to multi-megaton capacity by 2029, and potentially gigaton-level by 2035.We dive into the mechanics of traceability, the real costs of permanence, and why MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) is the make-or-break for CDR credibility. Ori also pulls no punches on what's holding back progress: delayed regulation, weak compliance markets, and over-reliance on short-term carbon offsets. If your company is thinking seriously about durable net zero strategies, or wondering how ocean-based carbon removal fits into the climate tech landscape, this episode delivers real insight.

'The front fell off.' The 94 metre 100 metre track. Fred Dagg. 24 years of political satire with Bryan Dawe. These are just a handful of the impactful comedic works from the one and only John Clarke. For over 40 years, John Clarke brought an unparalleled level of wit, politically astute comedic understanding, and pitch perfect timing to Australian and New Zealand audiences. John Clarke's work as a comedian wasn't just to entertain, but to also make audiences sit and think. Whether it be utilising the landmark comedy series The Games as a way of presenting an apology to the Stolen Generation of Australia, or by calling out the hypocrisy of the colonial state we live in, John Clarke utilised his comedic genius to masterful effect. In 2017, the world lost John Clarke, and Lorin Clarke lost her father. Now, after having explored over 200 boxes of John Clarke's work and letters, having written about book about her relationship with her dad, and having interviewed countless fellow comedic masters like Sam Neill, Rhys Darby, and Ben Elton, Lorin has crafted a documentary about her dad called But Also John Clarke. It's just about one of the most enriching and delightful experiences you'll have this year, even if you're not familiar with John Clarke's work - and I kind of almost envy you if you aren't, as you've got decades of work to be entertained by. For a film that could quite easily have become a hagiography or a maudlin experience, Lorin manages to balance the film with a delightful level of charm and compassion. Compassion not only for the loss of her father, but also for the audience who loved him, her mother, and most importantly, herself. In the following interview, recorded ahead of But Also John Clarke's world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival, Lorin talks about getting the balance right for a film like this, while also touching on the process she undertook to be vulnerable this way.I had an absolute blast and shed more than a few tears watching But Also John Clarke, as I'm sure you will too.It screens at MIFF from 15 August to 24 August, with select Q&A sessions with Lorin in attendance. The company, Trans Tasman Resources (TTR) has invested over $85 million toward a deep sea mining project off the South Taranaki Coast. It's Executive Chairman Alan Eggers is a qualified geologist who gained his degree at Victoria University, Wellington. But it's not all been plain sailing... Eggers lays it out in a most interesting interview which covers matters political, racial, social and financial, and helps to understand why New Zealand is poorly served in its search for the success it deserves. In this episode Ahmed shares the mind-blowing story of how he came to Christ from a very strict Muslim family background. He learnt the Quran by heart as a child, his father was a Mufti (a religious scholar) in Mecca, the birthplace of Islam. His tribe in Saudi Arabia is one of the most radical in their commitment to Islam and hatred of infidels, with several of them involved in the 9/11 attacks. But the prayers of some believers in New Zealand led to Ahmed having an amazing dream of Jesus, which changed everything. Years of rejection, ostricism and persecution followed his decision to follow Jesus, even bringing assassination attempts to prevent him attending church and sharing the good news. And yet he has persevered, refusing to give up on his Saviour and Lord.He now runs an online ministry into the Middle East, leading many Muslims to Christ and discipling countless others.Enjoy this incredible story, like a modern day version of the book of Acts! And do check out Ahmed's books and his website via these links.Support the show_________________________________________________________________________________Do get in touch if you have any questions for Matt or for any of his guests.matt@frontiers.org.ukYou can find out more about us by visiting www.frontiers.org.ukOr, if you're outside the UK, visit www.frontiers.org (then select from one of our national offices). What happens when the teacher becomes the student? David turns the tables and interviews me. We dive into the roots of my life, growing up in New Zealand's church and school systems, confronting injustice early on, and stumbling into my body through sport and the natural world. We move through my years as a young man questioning everything society had handed me and into the long journey that led me to the heart of Yoga with my teachers Krishnamacharya and Desikachar. This is a deeply personal conversation. I speak about the early insights that shaped my path, the teachers who helped me see through the spiritual industrial complex, and the simple, profound practices that brought me home to life as it is. David's questions open a space for something very real to come through: not theory, not tradition for its own sake, but the living truth of Yoga as intimacy with reality. Key Takeaways Early Awakening – A childhood moment on the lawn, sun on my back, revealed the body's deep continuity with the cosmos. Seeing Through Systems – From church to school to spirituality, I recognized early how society exploits the promise of a future salvation or success. Real Yoga Is Empowering – True Yoga adapts to the individual, honors the breath, and returns us to our natural state of wholeness. Teachers Who Transmit – Meeting Krishnamacharya and Desikachar brought a transmission of humility, scholarship, and direct experience, not branding. Yoga Is Relationship – Real practice embraces the body and life's tangible realities, especially the relational, where true meditation lives. The Body Is God – Yoga reveals that the body is not separate from divinity, it is divinity. This isn't a metaphor. It's actual, lived reality. But it's not film or television that's brought him here, instead Piven is bringing his stand-up comedy tour to the stage. Piven has been performing from a young age, with both his parents being actors in their own right, and practically raising him in a theatre. “I've been butchering some of the great writers of all time, I've been butchering it since I was eight years old.” Piven's foray into stand-up comedy came from a desire for balance, stretching and developing his performing muscles. “I make that transition and get up there and do my thing with that, and then go back to acting, and it makes you a better actor,” he told Hosking. “Most actors are sitting idle, they have a lot of rust on them ... with standup, I'm performing all the time.” “There's no rust on me.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's episode has the cohosts talking about social isolation and earlier death among the elderly population.   Studies have shown that loneliness is associated with a higher risk of mortality in older adults. For example, one study found that individuals experiencing loneliness at one or more points in time had a higher hazard for mortality compared to those who never experienced loneliness.  Loneliness can trigger physiological stress responses, potentially leading to chronic inflammation and reduced immunity. These factors can contribute to the development of various health problems, including heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other age-related illnesses.  Social isolation, which is closely linked to loneliness, can limit access to social support, including assistance with daily tasks, emotional support, and healthcare. This lack of support can negatively impact both physical and mental well-being.  Loneliness and social isolation have also been linked to poorer cognitive function and an increased risk of conditions like dementia.  Conversely, research suggests that maintaining social connections and receiving regular visits from loved ones can mitigate the risks associated with loneliness and potentially increase longevity.  In essence, according to many studies prior to 2025, loneliness can create a cycle of negative health impacts, potentially increasing the risk of premature death, while social connections and support can act as protective factors.  HOWEVER.... a new study was just reported last month that questions the previous assumptions.  Researchers tracking home care recipients in Canada, Finland, and New Zealand discovered something unexpected: lonely older adults were actually less likely to die within a year compared to their non-lonely peers. Among the most vulnerable seniors — those receiving help at home with daily activities — being lonely was associated with an 18% to 23% lower risk of death. We are sure more research will now be done to either support the newest study or previous studies.  Time will tell!

Bret McKenzie now mainly works on movie soundtracks, the Simpsons, Minecraft and the Muppets among them, which brings the pure delight of hearing his songs sung by Lady Gaga, Benedict Cumberbatch, Miss Piggy and Tony Bennett. He talks here about his early life in Wellington (ballet teacher Mum, racehorse trainer Dad), narrative comedy, songwriting heroes and his new album Freak Out City, and unravels New Zealand's double-edged sense of humour. Along with … … how Randy Newman pitches songs for soundtracks … “the test of a good song works is if it works with just one instrument” … lyrics he loved growing up like 16 Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford – ‘Some people say a man is made out of mud/ A poor man's made out of muscle and blood' … Morrissey's wounded reaction to his sausage-firing Quilloughby on the Simpsons ‘Panic On The Streets Of Springfield' ... solving the “fun puzzles” of a song brief and writing for “donkeys who have a dream” … the ingenious humour of John Prine, Harry Nilsson and Leonard Cohen … the moment in his live shows where he asks the audience for a story and creates a song around it – “one woman suggested ‘falling out of love' with her husband standing right beside her” ... playing the local girls schools aged 15 as the drummer in a James Brown funk band … reworking rejected songs – “which was hard with one from Paddington with its multiple rhymes for marmalade and Peru” … Flight Of The Conchords lampooning the acts they loved (Bowie, Pet Shop Boys) and playing the O2 – “pretending to be a stadium band and the audience pretending to be a stadium audience” … live on-stage application of the John Lennon “pomegranate” lyric-solving technique … “Play like a used car salesman! I need a Steely Dan solo here!” Recording with LA session legends like Leland Sklar.
