How does breathwork interact with our nervous system, access memories and help integrate traumatic memories? How has it got results treating auto-immune disease, addiction, agrophobia, PTSD and depression? How can it help sleep, detoxification, digestion, immunity, and taking control of negative thought patterns. In this episode we have the hugely popular practice of Breathwork to look into. After millennia of it being used in bodily practices like martial arts and yoga, conscious breathing was launched into our modern scientific world view by the work of psychologist Stan Grof, who developed Holotropic Breathing in the 1960's at Harvard, see our Transpersonal Psychology episode for more on that; Breathwork continued to gain in popularity following the focus on the lungs and breathing in near regulation proposed by Dr. Stephen Porges in his Polyvagal Theory, see our devoted episode with Dr. Porges for detail on that; And gained further in popularity with Dr. Pete Levine's development of Somatic Experiencing, who I am delighted to announce will be coming on the show in the next series, so look out for that.  So having been present for some time in the trauma community, in the last few years the practice has exploded onto the wellbeing scene as well because of all its benefits both physiologically and psychologically. So who better to talk to about this than expert in a wide range of Breathwork and body-based therapies, Rebecca Dennis. She facilitates workshops, events and retreats alongside her public speaking and individual sessions. She is a gifted speaker and coach, specialising in breathwork, trauma release, somatic modalities, polyvagal theory and nervous system regulation.  Part of her wide popularity is due to her having written three successful books on the topic, the latest being a new edition of Let it Go, “Let It Go and Breathe – A Practical Guide To Breathwork” which has been featured in Amazon and Sunday Times Best Sellers, and which we'll be discussing today. And she has also collaborated with Google, BBC, Stylist magazine and Sweaty Betty. What we discuss: 00:00 intro. 05:15 Breathwork explained 09:00 Repressing and controling emotions changes breathing. 12:00 Sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system. 20:50 Long deep breaths don't necessarily calm you down. 23:50 It's NOT hyperventilation or hyperoxygenation. 29:00 How traumatic memories can be brought up by the breath. 38:00 Rebecca's crisis that brought her to breathwork. 43:30 Benefits: Depression relief, confidence, sleep, detox, digestion, immunity, taking control of thought patterns. 46:00 “Let it go” book: the foundations of the breath in daily life, tips and methods. 47:40 Breathe yourself calm - lower abdominal breathing. 49:00 Anxiety is higher now than ever. 52:40 What's the right way to breathe? 59:00 Accessing altered states of consciousness without psychedelics. 59:45 Unlocking traumatic memories: Breath, psychedelics, EMDR. 01:01:00 Easing the symptoms without re-living the memories. 01:02:45 Some of her darkest memories have been her greatest teachers. 01:05:00 Increased resilience emotionally, physically and mentally. 01:07:20 Anti bacterial/anti viral Nitrous-oxide produced, improving immunity. 01:08:00 Gut-brain-cardio vascular system axis: anti-inflammatory effects. 01:11:45 Telomere length in meditators (caps on the end of chromosomes) Elizabeth Blackburn 2015 study. 01:13:30 Treating auto-immune disease, addiction, agrophobia, PTSD and depression using breathwork. 01:17:00 New book coming soon. 01:17:50 Her own new training school in Nov 2024. Go to ratethispodcast.com/openloopsJourney with Greg to the insights of esteemed hypnotist, coach, teacher, healer, sacred medicine practitioner, and NLP and HNLP Maestro, Jess Marion. Picture yourself stepping into the realm of storytelling, intricately woven narratives, and the transformative potential of hypnosis. As your guide, Jess, paints a vivid scene, you can perceive your brain akin to an eager audience, naturally receptive to stories. These tales are not just stories, they're vessels carrying ideas, subtly reshaping your experiences and subtly demonstrating perspectives you hadn't considered before. In this realm, you'll stumble upon nested loops, a fascinating technique reminiscent of Russian dolls. Story within story, each loop is like a path leading you further into a captivating narrative landscape, a unique kind of maze designed to foster unconscious rapport and a sense of linguistic intrigue that stirs your intellect. At this point, you may find yourself recalling an old tale, perhaps one told by your grandmother, where one narrative seamlessly cascades into another. Isn't it fascinating how similar this is to exploring the ethics of hypnosis? The focus is on the delicate balance between suggestion and your commitment. You can almost hear the city's hustle and bustle, a backdrop that served as Jess's training ground, where she fine-tuned her skills in the midst of urban chaos. As you navigate this narrative labyrinth, imagine yourself stepping into an enigmatic room filled with the mystique of Rasputin. Jess unravels her own experience of channeling him, a tale that engrosses you and underscores the intricate dance between your conscious and unconscious mind. You soon find yourself at a thought-provoking crossroad where hypnosis meets mysticism. Jess, like a trusted guide, shares her insights on hypnosis's potential to mirror a psychedelic journey, but without any substances involved. Intriguing, isn't it?Continuing this winding path, neuroscience appears on the horizon, its metaphors serving as lighthouses illuminating the complex terrain of your unconscious and super-conscious mind.As this enlightening conversation winds down, you find yourself back where you started, at the entrance of the narrative labyrinth. Just like a skilled hypnotist bridging conscious states, you've embarked on a journey through a maze of stories and ideas, discovering the transformative potential of hypnosis. By stepping into this intricate dance of narratives, you uncover a deeper understanding of the vast capabilities of your own mind."There's no such thing as hypnosis. How much of our consciousness is shared? In this episode we have the fascinating job of trying to get to get to grips with Jung's concept of the Collective unconscious. I've always loved Jung and I think his ideas can offer a brilliant framework in which to maximise our mental health, to use life's challenges to harvest meaningful lessons, and just to navigate the subjective experience of being alive. But this is a science podcast, so we do want to get clear on what is just a useful idea and what is a scientifically proven reality. Jung was very shy to speak about scientifically unprovable ideas because he was a rigorous academic, but as his career progressed he was encouraged more and more to elaborate on the tools he was using with his patients; and as we'll discuss today he felt there was a huge value in acknowledging the active role of what lies outside of the sphere of testable knowledge, rather than just dismissing it as non-existent. So I am extremely happy to have Jungian analyst Dr Monika Wikman with us to help locate the threshold between these two very different fields of knowledge and to explain in detail the collective unconscious. Monika is the author of ‘Alchemy and the Rebirth of consciousness' and received her PHD in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology and then deepened her knowledge of Jungian Analysis at the Jung-Von Franz Center for Depth psychology in Zurich. She is an expert on topics including the anima mundi and environmental issues of our time, archetypal phenomena surrounding death, dreams, active imagination, and alchemy. Her work with the dying culminated in a research project called ‘Dreams of the Dying' at UC San Diego Medical Center, which is the foundation of her most recent book, Alchemy of Life, Death and the Wedding Veil. What we discuss in this Episode: Part 1 12:20 The humility of the ego to identify suffering that creates an opening for us to grow: Dissent, the renewal of consciousness 14:30 What is the Collective Unconscious? 19:00 How can motif's from ancient myths appear in the minds of those who've never learned about these myths? 20:00 The healing function of connecting with this archetypal strata of consciousness 29:00 The importance of dreams to scientific discovery 40:00 Monika's ‘2 weeks to live to cancer free overnight' experience 50:00 Ego consciousness making a bridge to the symbolic field of the collective unconscious Part 2 1:03:00 How do we use knowledge of the collective unconscious in therapy? 1:11:20 Chaos as a catalyst forcibly setting off a chain reaction of transformation 1:15:00 The Implicate and Explicate order, David Bohm and the big question about where does all this information reside 1:27:30 ‘Exploring Holotropic Breathing' 1:35:00 Peak experiences, psychedelics and the dangers of getting hooked on transformation References: ‘Pregnant Darkness; alchemy and the rebirth of consciousness' Monika Wikman ‘Exploring Holotropic Breathing' Monika Wikman Monika's presentation ‘Refining you inner bullshit detector' Monikawikman.weebly.com ‘On dream and death' by Marie- Louise Von Franz ‘The order disorder paradox' by Nathan Schwarz Stan Grof's Holotropic Breathing and Grof Transpersonal Psychology training

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/niraj2 I met my friend Niraj Naik (the same guy who invented the crazy holotropic-style breathwork protocol I do in my sauna) inside a sauna in Estonia, Finland, where he led me and one of my buddies through an "omming" breathwork protocol, and I've been hooked on him as my "go to guy" for breath work ever since. He joined me first on the podcast "The Renegade Pharmacist: How To Increase The Effects Of Psilocybin, The Secrets Of Colostrum, Fixing Constipation With Breathwork & More" and also invented the breath work routine that I took my boys and I through and detail in the article "How To Blast You (And Your Child's!) Physical, Mental, & Spiritual Resilience Through The Roof With Breathwork". He also recently designed an extraordinary 8 day breath work course called "SOMABreathFit" that my boys and I also just did - a course that combines fitness, sleep protocols, meditation protocols and much more in a simple-to-implement, done-for-you short daily program.  Niraj comes from a background of working long hours for several years as a community pharmacist. Becoming a certified “legal drug dealer” at the ripe age of 24, he got to witness first-hand, many clients going home with shopping bags full of drugs each month, rarely getting better and usually going on to suffer from other diseases. He also learned of the debilitating side effects of the prescription medications which drove many of the patients to have to take more and more drugs to ease the side effects. Curious to find ways to improve his own health, he attended several health seminars and discovered an in-depth approach on how to reach optimum health and vitality by understanding the true origin of disease and how to prevent it. After experiencing great benefits with his own health, Niraj was motivated to devise a scheme to see if he could also help his suffering patients. He incorporates a lifestyle plan called his "healthy shopping lists" that includes simple food swaps, tools and websites to support their specific conditions. Within two weeks he received testimonials from patients who were starting to get better and within a few months some being able to lower their dosages or completely come off their medications. After an arduous battle trying to get his novel approach accepted into the mainstream that resulted in a lot of stress and disillusionment, in 2010 he was diagnosed with a stress-related illness, ulcerative colitis, that left him housebound for over 10 months. He was told by doctors and nurses there existed no cure and he would need to be on medication for the rest of his life. Like his patients, Niraj suffered from side effects of his medication to the point he felt completely hopeless and even suicidal. He was then left with a choice that would be a major turning point in his life. Test out a new drug or have his colon removed. He decided to choose option 3, a path not yet known by conventional medicine. So began his search to learn from people who had great success with either curing themselves or others from chronic illness. He learned a combination of natural treatments including Ayurvedic practices and dietary recommendations from Paleo and Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). He studied healing methods through meditation, yoga and mind power techniques like self-hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). He even discovered the powerful techniques of sound and music therapy as tools for reducing stress and promoting self-healing. Niraj finally broke free from the burdens of his illness, without medication. The experience of illness has allowed him to completely re invent his life and discover a new passion for helping others to do the same. His specialty is helping people recover, prevent or reduce the dependency for longterm medication for the metabolic diseases of diabetes, heart disease and obesity as well as autoimmune disease where stress is an underlining factor in the cause. Niraj is now a professional musician, holistic health expert and entrepreneur. He runs several successful websites that help others who suffer from stress-related, chronic diseases through his self-composed, captivating meditation music and online courses. Niraj has composed music for healing centers, spas and therapists worldwide. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Niraj's personal history and what makes his programs unique...06:50 -What mainstream yoga practices get wrong...21:45 -How CO2 has been thrown under the bus...33:15 -Where Wim Hof gets it wrong...36:10 -Breath work combined w/ hyperbaric treatment?...45:45 -Combining modern science w/ ancient wisdom when it comes to breath work...50:35 -Why humming is an important part of Niraj's training...55:30 -The importance of the control pause tactic...59:55 -What happens at Niraj's live clinics...1:04:05 -How diet affects your breath...1:12:45 -And much more! -Episode Sponsors Kion Lean JOOVV Thrive Market Clearlight Saunas Do you have questions, thoughts or feedback for Niraj or me? In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’re going to learn how to breathe. And the person who’s going to explain it is my guest James Nestor. He’s a San Francisco-based science journalist, author, surfer, free diver, adventurer, and speaker. His new book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art,” takes on a topic that we all take for granted. So why is the topic of breathing so fascinating? Apparently, as “natural as breathing” really isn’t. Our breathing has evolved, and not for the better. Even though we think we know how to do it, our lives since the Industrial Age have been disrupted in ways that now are harming us. James set out on a decade-long quest to find out where our breathing went wrong—and how to fix it. He uncovered the history of ancient breathing techniques and the science behind breathing. His book draws on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology. He takes an intense and interesting look at this basic biological function of ours. One of the astounding things he discovered had to do with mouth breathing. “Twenty-five to 50 percent of the population are chronic mouth breathers,” James says. “So, we don't use our noses either because we can’t, because they're always plugged up, or we just choose not to. … So many people have chronic sinus. So many people are mouth breathing. And so many people have asthma that we've accepted this as completely normal, and it's not. And the science is very clear what damage this is doing to us as a population.”You’ll be thrilled at the stuff you’ll learn in this episode that you didn’t know before. From bone structure to oxygen intake to heart rate–and even your genitalia–breathing is at the center of it all. James is here to talk about ways that proper breathing can help heal modern medical conditions, ease anxiety and basically change your life.Enjoy! The Seeker and The Skeptic is a podcast in which two friends, Rebecca and Cat, explore esoteric, paranormal and spiritual topics from two completely different perspectives. Cat is The Seeker, she’s interested in spiritual ideas and hopes to find something meaningful and empowering in the wisdom of religion and new age philosophy. Rebecca is The Skeptic, she’s passionate about finding truth (or at least getting closer to it) using the tools of reason and evidence. Though their approaches to life and ideas are very different they share a sense of humor and a commitment to talking honestly about what we believe and why, which is why they started this podcast. In each episode they discuss a different topic or experience they’ve had from Holotropic Breathing to Mediumship and they’ll see if they can learn something from each other or change each other’s minds… or if their conversation will devolve into a good natured slanging match. Whatever happens they think having these conversations will be enlightening and amusing and after they finish recording they’ll be pouring themselves a drink and planning their next adventure.
