for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] Now, there are movies that are true time capsules. They capture the feeling and specific aura of time. In my rewatch of Palo Alto from 2013 I was instantly transported back to that time period. For me it was a very specific set of aesthetics and music that lived on the internet and Tumblr specifically and this whole movie felt like wandering through a blog. I was transfixed by this after my first watch at the cinema. The soundtrack lived in my head for months and still is one of my favorites. During my rewatch this time I could see the cracks in the story that I didn't see before. The truly blandness of the story, some of the most unlikeable characters, and the whole problematic nature of James Franco and his sleazy role in this film adapted from his short stories. I've decided to put this in my 'kinda bad, but I like it' category. I get into the behind the scenes short film that was produced for it, the normie but relatable fashion, and the lack of technology that felt like a breath of fresh air in the story. We sit down with filmmaker Elliott Hasler about the making of Vindication Swim, a period sports drama inspired by Mercedes Gleitze—the first British woman to swim the English Channel in 1927. Shot over three years entirely in open water, the film demanded extraordinary perseverance from its cast and crew, with lead actor Kirsten Callaghan performing all her own swims and no visual effects or body doubles in sight.Elliott shares how the team navigated unpredictable tides, safety challenges, and a micro-budget while maintaining historical authenticity and cinematic scale. From coordinating small, agile crews to rebuilding the film's entire soundscape in post, Vindication Swim became a testament in indie filmmaking ingenuity. Despite its modest resources, the film went on to play in over 300 cinemas for 18 weeks and break into the UK box office top 20.Elliott reflects on the resilience, creativity, and community spirit that powered the project—and how telling real stories of perseverance mirrors his own journey as a filmmaker. Vindication Swim opens in New York City on October 17, followed by select U.S. screenings and a digital release in November.About WrapbookWrapbook is a smart, intuitive platform that makes production payroll and accounting easier, faster, and more secure. Episode 515 marks the very first CG Garage Podcast episode under the Monstrous Moonshine banner, and it's a big reset moment. Chris is joined by longtime collaborator Daniel Thron and new producer/coordinator Lily Nichols to introduce this new chapter. Together, they reflect on the origins of the Monstrous Moonshine name, its ties to both 1970s cinema and mathematics, and why it represents the kind of creative synchronicity they want to bring into filmmaking. They also talk openly about the transition from Chaos, where the podcast began 11 years ago, and what this move means for the future of the show. The discussion quickly moves into the state of the movie industry today, with the group debating whether Hollywood is on the brink of another “New Hollywood” moment like the late 1960s. They examine the rise of bold new films such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, Spider-Verse, K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Godzilla Minus One, contrasting them with the fatigue of endless franchises. The conversation also tackles AI's role in the future of production, the pressures on young filmmakers, and why risk-taking is once again the only way forward. It's both a reflection and a rallying cry: a podcast looking back at its roots while leaning hard into the future of filmmaking. Monstrous Moonshine > CG Garage > Ray Tracing FTW >

There has been a lot of talk around Sinners. Good, bad, or ugly, everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Is it really the best movie of the young year? Is it grossly overrated? Something else entirely? Whatever the case, audiences are going out to see it in drovers. What is being overlooked by many is the biggest irony surrounding it.We spend a lot of time talking lovingly of the theater experience. It was a big part of growing up and still remains fun even as adults. So it sucks to hear when the CEO of Netflix says theaters are outdated. It is not so much his opinion that matters, but the fact that he actually has the power to make movie theaters obsolete.Which makes it all the better when someone like Rian Johnson talks about how he wants Knives Out 3 in as many movie theaters as possible for as long as it can. Since he has a deal with Netflix, we all know where the movie will eventually end up. The fact that he wants a run that is longer than a week or two is nice to hear. The detective noir is a genre that does not get the love it used to. A part of this may be due to burnout. The 1930s - 1950s saw a huge number of them released. Many of them are considered classics. There has not been a good one in quite a while so when one bills itself as a triumphant return, we were all in.Exaggeration is a part of marketing. We get that. But Dark My Light has no film noir elements, at all. There are exactly zero moments. Instead, it is a science fiction movie that wants to be about a character. The question is not why did they market as something it is not. It is not even whether what they ended up doing worked. The real question is did this movie even have a script?Karate tournament movies were all the rage back in the day. Jean-Claude Van Damme was able to build a career off of them while the legacy of The Karate Kid still lives on. We could not wait to see Absolute Dominion. Sure, the idea may be the flimsiest excuse ever to have a globe spanning battle for supremacy, but nostalgia is a powerful draw.Regrettably, Absolute Dominion lacks any of the charm of the movies from our childhood. It is way more confusing than it has to be, ignores its most interesting subplot, and lacks any of the tension these types of films need. We also try to figure out who Alex Winter owes money to. The Strange Harbors Podcast

This week we review Pascal Plante's Red Rooms, an under-the-radar indie that's taken the horrorsphere by storm. A serial killer thriller that finds power in its restraint and shocking prescience, Red Rooms is an evil — yet vital — film to understand the stranglehold of postmodern, screen-abetted detachment. We discuss our culture of macabre obsessions, parasocial madness, and growing numbness, as well as Juliette Gariépy's incredible performance at the center of this film.

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode.
