ISIS has claimed its first attack in Israel roughly five years, meanwhile in Iraq, funding has begun on a border wall in vulnerable locations along the Iraq-Syria border in response to ISIS fighters using these routes to enter the country and wreak havoc. Meanwhile, on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Afghani Taliban regime attempts to rid themselves of Pakistani Taliban forces, otherwise known as TTP. The TTP has been using the borderlands in Afghanistan to launch attacks in an attempt to overthrow the current Pakistani regime. Alberto Suarez Sutil from CTG's CENTCOM team joins Adam Stevens to break down these events.
In How ISIS Fights: Military Tactics in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Egypt (Edinburgh UP, 2021), Omar Ashour has written a detailed and data-rich analysis of ISIS's way of war. He analyzes the tactical and operational levels of war to depict what makes ISIS successful and unique. He reveals that ISIS was tactically and organizationally innovative, redefining not just what a terrorist organization is, but what it does. Not only did SIS pioneer a number of highly innovative tactical and procedural techniques, it also built an extremely cohesive and coherent personnel structure characterized by intense loyalty, delegation and creativity. This book is essential for anyone wanting to understand what ISIS did, exactly, to gain battlefield success and what happened to cause it to lose those gains once made. In our interview, we discuss the origin of this study, how ISIS franchises spread and cohered to the main body, its potential threats as an international terrorist organization and why it grew as quickly as it did. We also consider what the future might hold for ISIS. It's an 80-20 ratio of speaking to listening - 80 percent of the time your job is to listen and to ask but not know the answer. Often the client thinks you do know the answer but actually you really don't and that makes the coaching pure coaching. It resists becoming mentoring, or telling, or advising. It sits next to psychotherapy - I am very much informed by psychotherapy, particularly the psychoanalytic stance in psychotherapy. I'm informed by it and borrow from its best ethics of good practice." Episode Description: Rachel describes the similarities and differences between coaching and psychotherapy on the one hand and mentoring on the other. She emphasizes the fundamental importance of listening - her 80-20 rule. We discuss examples from her book on her coaching a leader of aid workers in Somalia, a coach of diversely disabled athletes at the 2016 Paralympic Games, and a woman from Pakistan who had to deal with conflicting feelings and realities when faced with an influx of Afghan refugees. In all examples, we hear of Rachel's capacity for nuance, ambiguity, and dedication to each individual's life story. We close with her recounting her own personal journey. Our Guest: Rachel Ellison is a former BBC news reporter. She was awarded an MBE – Member of the Order of the British Empire – by Queen Elizabeth II / or by the Queen for her work on human rights and women's self-empowerment in Afghanistan. Her team was awarded BBC Team of the Year, in recognition of her coaching style of leadership with her all Afghan, all-female collective of journalists. At the BBC, Rachel volunteered to train as an executive leadership coach and then went on to set up her own consultancy. She has led and coached across more than 40 different cultures, tribes, nations, and organizational systems around the world, including post-conflict zones and emerging economies such as Myanmar/Burma, Iraq & Syria, Kenya, and the former Soviet Union. Rachel coaches from a psychoanalytic stance – believing this approach to be intense, creative and generating of deep insight for individuals and organizations. Rachel has been a guest lecturer at Birkbeck University London, at Oxford and Cambridge universities in the UK, and to speak at international conferences throughout Europe. The U.S. carried out airstrikes last night against Iran-backed Shia militia, killing four of the militiamen. Aircraft targeted three sites along the Iraq-Syria border for destruction in retaliation for drone attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq. The targets apparently were linked to the drone program: “operational and weapons storage facilities,” according to the Pentagon. These strikes are better than nothing but are not enough to deter Iran and its militias from continuing attacks. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
President Joe Biden directed military forces to conduct defensive precision airstrikes against facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups in the Iraq-Syria border region on Sunday evening, according to a news release from the Department of Defense. "The targets were selected because these facilities are utilized by Iran-backed militias that are engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq. Specifically, the U.S. strikes targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one location in Iraq, both of which lie close to the border between those countries," Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in the release. The US is again illegally bombing nations on the other side of the planet which it has invaded and occupied and branded this murderous aggression as "defensive". "At President Biden's direction, U.S. military forces earlier this evening conducted defensive precision airstrikes against facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups in the Iraq-Syria border region," reads a statement by Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby. "The targets were selected because these facilities are utilized by Iran-backed militias that are engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq. *) US air strikes near Iraq-Syria border leave four dead We start at the border of Iraq and Syria, where Iran-backed militias say four fighters died in US air strikes as Syrian regime media report that a child was also killed. American forces targeted facilities used by Iran-backed factions near the Al Qaim border crossing with Syria. It's the second time President Joe Biden has ordered attacks on the Iraqi-Syrian border. This time, it's thought to be in response to drone attacks by militias against US personnel and facilities. *) Exit polls show French far-right party defeat Exit polls in France's regional elections show a defeat for Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party amid a low voter turnout. President Emmanuel Macron's Republic on the Move party also fared poorly and is on course to lose in all of France's 13 mainland regions. Xavier Bertrand, of the northern region, has emerged as the conservatives' favourite to represent the party in next year's presidential election. *) South Africa hardens lockdown curbs to combat Delta variant surge South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a tightening of Covid-19 restrictions for 2 weeks from Monday. While Joe Biden has faced some mild Congressional pushback for bombing the Iraq-Syria border, Tulsi Gabbard says her former colleagues are ignoring the larger issue: the ongoing US dirty war on Syria. After a decade of proxy warfare that empowered Al Qaeda and ISIS, the US is now occupying one-third of Syria and imposing crippling sanctions that are crushing Syria's economy and preventing reconstruction. While Gabbard has been vilified for her stance on Syria, many top White House officials -- including Joe Biden himself -- have already acknowledged the same facts that she has called out. Aaron Maté plays clips of Biden and some of his most senior aides admitting to the horrific realities of the US dirty war on Syria, and argues that Gabbard only stands apart in being wiling to criticize it. Featuring clips from: Tulsi Gabbard, former Democratic Congressmember; President Joe Biden; Brett McGurk, National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa; Martin Dempsey, former Joint Chiefs chairman; Rob Malley, Special Envoy for Iran; John Kerry, Special Envoy for Climate & former Secretary of State; former President Donald Trump; Alena Douhan, UN Special Rapporteur on Sanctions; Dana Stroul, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East; Vice President Kamala Harris.
Ted Rall, a political cartoonist and syndicated columnist, joins us to discuss censorship. Civil libertarians are crying foul as members of Congress advocate for using online behemoths to shut down opposing viewpoints. Two House Democrats authored a letter intended to strong-arm various companies, such as AT&T and Verizon, into dropping conservative news outlets from their television lineup. The letter specifically targeted those news outlets that the two members oppose. Also, Democrats questioned the 2016 election results, but faced no calls for censorship in the way that they are now advocating.Dr. Colin Campbell, a Washington, DC, news correspondent, joins us to discuss the current perils of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. A third complaint has come out regarding Andrew Cuomo. In the latest of a series of complaints, a New York woman claims that Governor Cuomo placed his hand on her exposed back and asked if he could kiss her, loudly enough for a person standing nearby to hear. Will the avalanche of complaints, combined with the coronavirus scandal, be enough to end the beleaguered governor's political career?Caleb Maupin, journalist and political analyst, joins us to discuss propaganda in the US media. A new Gallup poll shows that attitudes towards Russia and China in the US are at an all-time low. Mainstream media outlets have spent an inordinate amount of resources demonizing the official CIA boogeymen over the last several years, and it seems to be paying dark dividends. A new Cold War that is capable of ending human existence has been created using a combination of government, mainstream media, and government-sponsored think-tank resources. Also, the US announces sanctions against Russia ostensibly for the Navalny case.Dr. Linwood Tauheed, associate professor of economics at the University of Missouri- Kansas City, joins us to discuss economics. Senator Bernie Sanders is at odds with Democratic leadership regarding the fight for a 15-dollar minimum wage. Many are arguing that this issue will define the Biden administration's economic policy, and may have a dramatic effect on the success of Democrats during the midterms. Alexander Mercouris, editor-in-chief at TheDuran.com and host of "The Duran" on YouTube, joins us to discuss Ukraine. The Pentagon has advised that they are giving 125 million dollars in military aid to Ukraine. Also, President Joe Biden has released a statement that he will never accept Russia's annexation of Crimea. Elisabeth Myers, lawyer and former editor-in-chief of Inside Arabia, joins us to discuss Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The UK is supporting the Saudi war on Yemen by continuing sales of military hardware while slashing aid. Also, the US is claiming that they do not sanction world leaders as they are criticized for overlooking the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Laith Marouf, a broadcaster and journalist based in Beirut, Lebanon, joins us to discuss Syria. Iraqi PMU forces are signaling that they will retaliate against US forces in the region as a response to airstrikes against their compatriots on the Iraq/Syria border. Also, Ron Paul argues that Joe Biden's orders to conduct airstrikes in Syria are illegal, and clearly constitute an impeachable offense.Immigration attorney Carlos Castaneda joins us to discuss a landmark Supreme Court case regarding voting rights. The SCOTUS is hearing an Arizona case in which a number of restrictions were placed on potential voters. A lower court ruled that the restrictions were unconstitutional in that they disproportionately affected Black, Hispanic, and Native American voters. The case involves a controversial method called ballot collection or "ballot harvesting." However, a lower court argued that they “found no meaningful threat that ballot collection leads to fraud.”
On today's Watchman Newscast, host Erick Stakelbeck breaks down the U.S. airstrike against Iran-backed militias in Syria on February 25th. The strike occurred along the Iraq/Syria border and targeted Iraq-based terror militias, including Kataib Hezbollah. At least 17 of these fighters were reportedly killed, including one Kataib Hezbollah member. The airstrike came in response to a series of rocket barrages against U.S. personnel in Iraq over the past two weeks. But will it be enough to deter the Iranian regime and its proxies from further terror attacks--and does it change Biden's desire to re-enter the disastrous Iran nuclear deal? He talks about practical skills and practices we can employ in our daily lives to make us more resilient, the importance of mutual aid, armed self defense and DIY skills. We also discuss climate change & economic collapse as additional factors that would play into all of this. Robert also talks about his upcoming podcast series about Rojava and unveils what Season 2 of It Could Happen Here will be about...

Several major developments have rattled the region in recent weeks, including Iraq’s ongoing protests, the U.S. withdrawal from Syria and the death of ISIS leader al-Baghdadi. USIP’s Sarhang Hamasaeed says his death is a major blow to the terrorist group, but “the fact remains that … the enabling environment that gave rise to ISIS” is still present.
This week, Bill is joined by FOX News Foreign Correspondent Benjamin Hall, from the Iraq-Syria border. Benjamin describes how the raid, that led to the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was executed. Benjamin discusses the future of ISIS now that Baghdadi is dead and shares his experience reporting from the dangers of the front lines.
In episode 87, the girls get heavy. They read the name of every human being who died in the Mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand and give some background on them. They also get into the rise of ISIL in the Iraq/Syria region and how they still maintain some power. It's a heavy one. We recommend a box of tissues if you're sensitive to such topics. FOOTNOTES: 1. It's funny, I spent the entire morning pouring over articles and documents related to Benghazi and the Iraq/Syria crisis as we try to formulate some idea of what's going on over there. I had several articles together to at least lay the groundwork for a larger show I want to do, and I planned on introducing them on today's show. But then I started chatting with one of the members of our private FB group (http://www.jasonstapleton.com), and I got sidetracked. The issue at had been a comment I made on yesterday's show regarding market failures. You can go back and listen to yesterday's show for the full conversation but basically I said a free market does fail. There are times when it is not efficient, but that most of the time any breakdown or perceived market failure can be traced back to government. This sparked a good discussion about what a market failure is. So I picked out a couple of what I think are simple market failures, and I share them with you on the show today.I know there are a lot of people who will take issue with my analysis here. I certainly go's against a lot of what you hear inside our libertarian circles. But I think if you give it an honest review you'll find there's some merit to my position.JasonSupport the show.
In this 25 minute program, Chuck Carlson expands on his article, by the same title, about what the US government and main stream media is not telling us about ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq & Syria) and its sources of revenues. Chuck cuts through the fog using old fashioned logic. For example, he analyzes a Financial Times article, "ISIS Inc.: how oil fuels the jihadhi terrorists" and makes some startling observations.
