Read OnlineConfronting OppositionWhile Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. Some Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” Luke 6:1–2Though Jesus' public ministry was still in its early stages, confrontations with the religious leaders had already become frequent. This episode marks the fourth recorded instance of such tension. In the previous days, the Pharisees had accused Jesus of blasphemy for forgiving the paralytic before healing him, of scandal for eating with tax collectors and sinners after calling Levi, and of impiety for neglecting the traditional practice of fasting. Now, He and His disciples are accused of violating the Sabbath law by picking heads of grain, rubbing them, and eating them.Slowly, the Pharisees are emerging as hardened opponents of Jesus, increasingly focused not on the divine power and mercy He reveals, but on preserving their own rigid interpretations of the Law. These confrontations reveal both their growing hostility and Jesus' authority as the true interpreter and fulfillment of the Law.Though the Pharisees began going out of their way to confront Jesus, He was not intimidated and confronted their opposition directly. Today, as we read the Scriptures, we know well that many of the religious leaders at that time were deeply misguided in their understanding of the Law and its purpose. Such confrontations were shocking in a culture where ordinary Jews rarely challenged religious leaders. While the leaders themselves often debated among one another, it was almost unheard of for ordinary Jews to challenge them openly. For that reason, many of Jesus' disciples likely felt a sense of surprise and tension as these encounters unfolded. At the same time, they may also have experienced a sense of relief as they witnessed Jesus expose the rigidity and oppressive practices that had long left many Jews feeling burdened, discouraged, and spiritually exhausted.Though Jesus' confrontation was necessary, we too must learn from their negative example. While we no longer encounter scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, or elders in the same form as in first-century Israel, the underlying sins that afflicted them remain just as present in our world today.Those underlying sins could be summed up as a misuse of authority for its own sake, a tendency toward outward religious observance without inward transformation, and a preference for human traditions over divine revelation. These tendencies manifest themselves in every generation. They are found not only within the Church but also in homes, businesses, governments, and every human institution. Wherever pride overshadows humility or control stifles compassion, the spirit of the Pharisees lives on. Therefore, as disciples of Christ, we must be vigilant in our own lives—first examining our hearts for these tendencies, and then responding with the same holy courage and divine clarity that our Lord Himself displayed.Do you experience oppression from others? Are you the cause of that oppression? Misused authority, whether by individuals or institutions, wounds hearts, stifles freedom, and obscures the gentle call of grace. Before condemning such behavior in others, we must honestly examine whether we, too, have clung to positions of control or influence in ways that burden rather than bless.Reflect today on the fallen human tendency to love authority for its own sake. Do you struggle with this? Power that is exercised without humility and without charity that seeks only the good of others is dangerous and often abusive. Look for such structures in your life—whether external or internal—and prayerfully surrender them to Christ. Allow Him, the true Lord of the Sabbath, to reorder your heart according to truth, love, and mercy, so that every exercise of authority in your life becomes an act of service, modeled after His own.My all-powerful Lord, Your divine authority is absolute. You are the Source of all that is, the Sustainer of creation, and the Holder of dominion over all things. Every exercise of Your authority flows from perfect charity and infinite wisdom. Please reign in my life with that same loving authority, and help me to exercise any authority entrusted to me with humility, mercy, and the charity that flows from Your Sacred Heart. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, arm the Iranian people, the time is now. The Reagan Doctrine worked. Let us not be risk averse in the middle of a war when we seek victory and thousands of Iranian people have been and are being slaughtered. We can't predict everything in a war, if we are not going to arm the Iranian people, then let's ask the Israelis to do so. They are likely less risk averse, and their Mossad certainly has a good handle on who is who there.  Also, there's a report that describes a growing Muslim political participation across the United States, from an all-Muslim city council in Hamtramck, Michigan, and influence in Dearborn to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's largely Muslim staff and 228 Muslim elected officials in 26 states. It reports that some candidates, including Abdul El-Sayed and Adam Hamawy, have received funds or maintained ties linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas-front groups, or figures connected to al-Qaeda. Islam does not separate religion from civic life and Sharia law practices are at odds with U.S. law. Later, a DSA member says he reads Mao, Ho Chi Minh, and Castro and rejects merely reforming capitalism with diversity, rainbows, or Black capitalism, arguing it will still suppress and consume the planet. This worldview is the worst form of totalitarianism because it refuses any adjustment or improvement of existing institutions and instead demands the destruction of capitalism and private property. Afterward, the media portrayed Columbia student Mohsen Mahdawi, as a peaceful “boy scout” exercising free speech and advocating for Palestinian rights, but a 100-page investigation documents a previously unseen record of support for terrorists, terrorist organizations, and armed violence. The report unearths statements in which Mahdawi promised to “annihilate the Jews,” praised Hamas, honored dead terrorists, and bragged that Palestinians have the capacity and conviction to resist, kill, and wound; similar violence-tinged postings continued as recently as 2024 while he was on U.S. soil. Vice President JD Vance’s charm offensive failed to completely win over skeptical GOP donors who gathered this week in Las Vegas at the Republican Jewish Coalition National Leadership Summit, Haaretz’s Washington D.C. correspondent Arno Rosenfeld told the Haaretz Podcast. There were mixed reactions to Vance’s speech to the crowd of 1,000, meant to be off the record, but leaked publicly, in which the vice president attempted to reassure those attending that, despite his isolationist leanings and association with media figures who regularly peddle antisemitic tropes, that he believed in the “mutually beneficial” relationship between the U.S. and Israel, that he was not “abandoning” the Jewish state and appreciated “American Jewish contributions to the United States.” Vance’s words were a bit more “weird and convoluted” in a strange discussion of “blood guilt” – a term popularized by right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson, as a variation of the term “blood libel” with a slightly different meaning. “It was quite telling that Vance was using a framework that Carlson has come up with to talk about antisemitism,” Rosenfeld said, at a moment in which even the most conservative Jews have been disturbed by Carlson’s conspiratorial theories. On the podcast, Rosenfeld, who covered the three-day event, also spoke with host Allison Kaplan Sommer about the “anxiety” among some present over the dramatic drop in support for Israel among young conservatives, but the lack of any genuine strategy to address it, as well as the primary targets of the attack lines of the speeches: Muslims and socialists. Rosenfeld said he was particularly “struck by the degree of just sort of open animosity toward Muslims and Islam” at the gathering, “because of how much of a focus there was on antisemitism and on extremism and on radicalism and on hate. Peter answers:Acts 10:36 (NLT) There is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter calls Jesus “Lord,” a reference to his divinity. Jesus is God the Son, the second person of the Trinity (John 1:1-4). Jesus himself taught this (John 8:58), and his followers believed it. Scripture affirms that Jesus is fully God, creator and sustainer of all things. Colossians 1:15,19-20 (NLT) Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation…. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself.But why does this matter? Why is it important to believe that Jesus is fully God instead of just a good man? The answer is that Jesus could not offer us “peace with God” if he were merely human. Jesus is God, and his divinity qualifies him to be our savior.But let's not miss the last part of Acts 10:36. Jesus is Lord of “all,” not just Lord of the Israelites. God's desire from the beginning was that all people would come to know him. That's why Peter was preaching this sermon in the first place. God had sent him to the house of a Gentile, and this was the inauguration of a new kind of movement. Christianity would be a faith for both Jews and Gentiles, because Jesus is Lord of all. Perfectly GoodThe next teaching fills us in on Christ's activity while he was here on the earth. What kind of a person was he? How did he live?Acts 10:38 (NLT) Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil.Jesus was a miracle worker unlike anything the world had ever seen. He cast out demons (Luke 4:40-41) and healed lepers (Luke 5:12-13). He miraculously fed thousands (Matthew 14:13-21), walked on water (Matthew 14:22-33), and even raised a dead guy to life (John 11:38-44).On top of his miracles, Jesus “went around doing good.” This affirms what we learned about God earlier in this series. God is for you, not against you. He's a good God, and Jesus proved it by his actions while he walked this earth.But most important of all was what Jesus didn't do: he never sinned. Jesus was perfect and sinless from start to finish. During his lifetime Jesus proved his power over sin and its consequences. Read his story for yourself and here's what you'll find: Jesus was fully God and fully man, living a sinless life and perfectly modeling the love of God. Again, why is this important? Consider this: if Jesus had been a sinner like the rest of us, then he would have had to die for his own sins. But since he was sinless, he could go to the cross on our behalf. The sin-debt that he paid could be credited to our account, because Jesus didn't owe on the debt. Crucified and RisenSo far we've learned that Jesus is fully God and perfectly sinless. That sets us up for the core teaching of the early church on the person and work of Jesus: he died and rose again. The power of faith in Jesus hinges on these two simple, historical facts. Acts 10:39-40 (NLT) They put him to death by hanging him on a cross, but God raised him to life on the third day. Jesus was about thirty three years old when the Jews put him on trial and the Romans nailed him to the cross (Luke 23:44-46, 24:1-6). From the outside looking in, this was an epic tragedy. But it was God's plan all along, even though nobody saw it coming (Isaiah 53:8-10).And here's the most important part: Jesus didn't stay dead. He rose from the grave after three days, proving once and for all his power over sin and death. This is central to the Christian faith, because a dead savior would be no savior at all: 1 Corinthians 15:14 (NLT) And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless.But how do we know that the resurrection isn't just a myth? The simplest proof was the response of his closest followers. Though they abandoned Jesus in fear before the crucifixion, they sold out their lives to his message just three days later. Almost all of Jesus' first disciples died for their faith, because they firmly believed that Jesus was raised to life.Judge of AllThe fourth point of Peter's sermon might come as a surprise to modern listeners. Up until now it has all been good news. But Peter adds a stern warning:Acts 10:42 (NLT) Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead. The Bible teaches that someday Jesus will judge you for every good and bad thing you've ever done. And here's the bad news: left to yourself, there's no hope of passing the test at the end of eternity. You were born into sin, remember? The thought of a judgment day should get every person's attention (Hebrews 10:31). That's why Peter included it in his sermon.God is not only loving; he is also fair. And so we can't blame God for not flippantly dismissing our sins (Romans 2:9,16). God did not cancel his wrath against us – he spent it on his Son. At the cross, the justice of God collides with the love of God in the person of Jesus.Forgiver of SinsThank God that Peter doesn't end his sermon at judgment! Here's the final truth he teaches us about Jesus: Acts 10:43 (NLT) Everyone who believes in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name. This is the new birth that Jesus offers to sinners. The good news of the Bible is that we can be forgiven – but not through a lifetime of good works. Peace with God comes only through faith in a person: Jesus Christ. This is offered to anyone who believes.Jesus is Lord of all, perfectly good, crucified and risen, judge of all, and forgiver of sins. This is what Peter preached that day to the Gentile household of Cornelius, and it remains the basic message for seekers of God today.So we have a choice to

Full Text of Readings Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church Lectionary: 434 The Saint of the day is Saint Gregory the Great Saint Gregory the Great's Story Saint Gregory the Great was the prefect of Rome before he was 30. After five years in office he resigned, founded six monasteries on his Sicilian estate, and became a Benedictine monk in his own home at Rome. Ordained a priest, Gregory became one of the pope's seven deacons, and also served six years in the East as papal representative in Constantinople. He was recalled to become abbot, but at the age of 50 was elected pope by the clergy and people of Rome. Gregory was direct and firm. He removed unworthy priests from office, forbade taking money for many services, emptied the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards and to care for persecuted Jews and the victims of plague and famine. He was very concerned about the conversion of England, sending 40 monks from his own monastery. He is known for his reform of the liturgy, and for strengthening respect for doctrine. Whether he was largely responsible for the revision of “Gregorian” chant is disputed. Saint Gregory the Great lived in a time of perpetual strife with invading Lombards and difficult relations with the East. When Rome itself was under attack, he interviewed the Lombard king. His book, Pastoral Care, on the duties and qualities of a bishop, was read for centuries after his death. He described bishops mainly as physicians whose main duties were preaching and the enforcement of discipline. In his own down-to-earth preaching, Gregory was skilled at applying the daily Gospel to the needs of his listeners. Called “the Great,” Gregory has been given a place with Augustine, Ambrose, and Jerome, as one of the four key doctors of the Western Church. An Anglican historian has written: “It is impossible to conceive what would have been the confusion, the lawlessness, the chaotic state of the Middle Ages without the medieval papacy; and of the medieval papacy, the real father is Gregory the Great.” Reflection Gregory was content to be a monk, but he willingly served the Church in other ways when asked. He sacrificed his own preferences in many ways, especially when he was called to be Bishop of Rome. Once he was called to public service, Gregory gave his considerable energies completely to this work. Chabad Chassidus is an all-embracing world outlook and way of life which sees the Jew's central purpose as a unifying link between the Creator and His world. Written by the Alter Rebbe, the founder of Chabad, Tanya is the central text of Chabad Chassidus. It shows the reader a path to realizing their purpose and developing a deeper relationship with G-d. Choose from one of the two formats available: through Lessons in Tanya - a profound and clear explanation of the Alter Rebbe's writings, or through an audio class.

I have typically read Paul's letter to Rome like it was an essay written for the church at large for all times and for all places.  In fact Paul, Jesus' apostle to the nations, in about 57 A.D., wrote a pastoral letter to several house churches in Rome. He mentions 26 members of the Roman church by name in chapter 16.  He knew a lot about the churches and he was very concerned with simmering divisions within those churches.  The churches were composed of a great diversity of folks, Jews and Gentiles, slave and free, as well as male and female.  A dispute was heating up in the church between a group that Paul called the "Weak," primarily Jewish believers, and a group that Paul called the "Strong," primarily Gentile believers.  Neither group had much use for the other and that was the problem!  He had strong words for both groups. The issues have to do with the place of circumcision, sabbath keeping, and the Jewish food laws in the life of the Churches.  Paul used eleven chapters to give the churches a solid Christ centered foundation on which to live together as "One People of God."  His overriding message was that one church, composed of Jews and Gentiles, living to the Glory of God, is the will of the LORD God.  He declared in chapter 12, "All of us are members one of another."  He followed up this declarative in chapter 15 with the imperative:  "Welcome each other as Christ has welcomed you, for the Glory of God." Tom Wright was recently asked, "What about today's church would most disturb the apostle Paul?" To which he replied. "Our many, many divisions and our LACK OF CONCERN about it." Come on this journey with us through Paul's wonderful letter which invites us to rediscover the "Power of Oneness."

Between 1933 and 1935, a trial was held in Bern against members of the Swiss extreme right-wing National Front who had distributed “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” a widely disseminated antisemitic publication that spread lies about Jews. The real target of the Jewish organizations that initiated the trial, however, was the pamphlet itself, its origin, its dissemination, and its use in Europe's fascist movements. During the course of the trial, both sides received ample support in the form of material assistance and propaganda. The defendants and their supporters in Nazi Germany were able to rely on an extensive network that had been established in the early 1920s to combat “Judaeo-Bolshevism.” This conspiratorial “Antisemitic International” united German völkisch circles, Italian fascists, Russian monarchists, and French conspiracy theorists. On the other side, the plaintiffs actively sought to expose the “Protocols” as a forgery in the hope that this would counteract their impact. In this lecture, Michael Hagemeister will use the Bern trial as a case study of Jewish legal self-defense in order to shed light on both the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” and the concerted efforts against the “Antisemitic International” in the 1930s, which have received little attention from historians. It loves categories, identification numbers, demographic boxes, databases and tracking systems, each created with assurances that the information will be used responsibly and only for its stated purpose. Sometimes those systems genuinely improve accountability. Sometimes they reveal that the government has developed a remarkable ability to count things it cannot competently manage.In this episode of Plausibly Live: The Dave Bowman Show, Dave begins with a proposed federal system for tracking mail-ballot envelopes.
