**5 MINUTES OF PEACE** | **Reading by Shalini** | Created by The Peace Room, BoiseIn this peaceful episode, Shalini, a technology professional and holistic wellness coach, reads *Your Journey Inward* by Swami Rama, from the book *Soul to Soul*, compiled by John Mundell. This insightful poem reminds us that true self-discovery happens through meditation—a journey beyond thoughts and emotions, where we cast aside labels and opinions imposed by others. Meditation, Swami Rama explains, allows us to transcend the world of thought, behavior, and emotion, leading to a transformation within ourselves. The journey to truth, as the poem beautifully puts it, is "from the alone to the alone." This inward journey doesn't change the universe—it changes you.Shalini shares her vision of empowering individuals through holistic wellness, weaving together global wisdom on meditation, self-care, and healing. Ophelia grew up in Santa Barbara, and spent her adult life in Los Angeles.  She has been to over 45 countries and has been a constant study of human nature and our relationship to sexuality.   Summary In this episode, Ophelia Bradley, a sociologist with a passion for human nature and sexuality, shares her insights on identity, culture, and the impact of travel. She discusses her bicultural upbringing and how it shaped her understanding of human interaction. Ophelia also explores the fluidity of masculinity and femininity and the importance of questioning societal norms. She delves into the role of AI and technology in shaping human connection and self-exploration. Ophelia emphasizes the need for acceptance and open-mindedness in order to create a more inclusive and understanding society. The conversation explores cultural differences, empathy, sexuality, identity, the changing role of men, technology, global culture, the impact of AI, finding commonalities in cultures, the evolution of religion, and the importance of being mindful and curious. Takeaways Cultural upbringing and bicultural experiences can greatly influence one's understanding of human interaction and identity. Questioning societal norms and exploring one's own identity is essential for personal growth and self-acceptance. AI and technology have the potential to revolutionize human connection and provide new avenues for self-exploration. Creating a more inclusive and accepting society requires open-mindedness and a willingness to challenge cultural beliefs. Cultural differences should be approached with empathy and understanding. Sexuality and identity are complex and personal experiences. Men are experiencing a shift in their role and are becoming more emotionally connected. Technology, such as AI, has the potential to bring people together and create a global culture. Finding commonalities in cultures can help bridge gaps and foster understanding. Religion is evolving and may be replaced by new experiences or ideologies. Being mindful and curious can lead to greater empathy and acceptance. From a scrawny teenager to a professional bodybuilder and a dedicated advocate for veganism—Robert Cheeke's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Growing up on a small family farm, Robert had a deep connection with animals. The farm was home to cows, goats, chickens, and rabbits, and Robert actively participated in their care. However, as he became more aware of the ethics surrounding animal agriculture, he began questioning the practices they followed. Robert's transformative journey towards veganism began at the age of 15, largely inspired by his older sister's commitment to animal rights. She organized an animal rights week at their high school, exposing Robert to powerful videos and literature that shed light on the immense suffering endured by animals in factory farming. It was a turning point in his life. Transitioning to a vegan lifestyle wasn't without its challenges, especially within his family. Robert's father was an animal science professor, and his brother was actively involved in farming. Despite their differing dietary choices and ethical beliefs, Robert's family remained supportive. They even went the extra mile by accommodating his vegan diet with plant-based options from their garden. This aspect of Robert's journey taught him about the complexities of navigating family dynamics while adhering to a set of values that diverged from the norm. Robert's commitment to veganism extended beyond ethical considerations; it encompassed a desire to prove that one could achieve exceptional physical feats on a plant-based diet. This passion led him down the path of vegan bodybuilding. He wanted to inspire others to embrace this lifestyle, reduce animal suffering, and showcase the incredible potential of plant-based living. In the early days of his bodybuilding journey, Robert relied on plant-based protein supplements to support his training and muscle growth. He experimented with various sources of plant-based protein, including soy, rice, and pea protein, to meet his nutritional needs. However, Robert's perspective on nutrition experienced a significant shift in 2012 when he enrolled in Dr. T. Colin Campbell's plant-based nutrition course at eCornell University. This eye-opening experience challenged his beliefs about sports nutrition and supplementation. It emphasized the significance of whole foods in achieving not just physical strength but also overall health and vitality. The dedication and unwavering commitment to a whole food, plant-based diet paid off in Robert's bodybuilding career. He not only won competitions but also graced magazine covers and set strength records. One such record includes a bench press of 345 pounds, a testament to the remarkable strength achievable through plant-based nutrition. Beyond his achievements in bodybuilding, Robert discovered a new passion for writing and teaching. Inspired by mentors and friends, he began sharing his knowledge through books, speaking engagements, and educational endeavors. His ability to inspire and motivate others has turned him into an international ambassador for the plant-based lifestyle. Robert's legacy extends far beyond his personal accomplishments. His contributions to the vegan bodybuilding and fitness communities have helped countless individuals embrace plant-based living, achieve their fitness goals, and find like-minded communities. It's a testament to the transformative power of dedication, compassion, and a whole food, plant-based lifestyle. His story serves as a reminder that anyone can lead a fulfilling life while making a positive difference in the world through their actions and choices. We invite you to join Robert on this journey to a compassionate, healthy, and sustainable lifestyle. It's a familiar scene: organizations invest in team-building exercises and post-work gatherings to foster a sense of belonging. These proactive efforts are commendable, yet they only scratch the surface of a more profound challenge. True connectivity, it turns out, originates from a place within. In the absence of a well-defined set of core values, establishing profound and authentic relationships becomes an intricate endeavor. Enter Brant Menswar, a proponent of a values-driven pathway to genuine connections. By delineating one's core values, individuals embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery. This heightened self-awareness lays the groundwork for forging meaningful relationships anchored in transparency and intentionality. In an era dominated by AI, a poignant question emerges: how do we mold our identity amidst the onslaught of technological progress? Brant delves into this thought-provoking inquiry, advocating for an alignment of AI's influence with human values. He reframes the discourse from one of control to one of amplification, positioning AI as a tool to magnify our values and stimulate growth with purpose. Education, as a domain, is not untouched by this paradigm shift. Leveraging AI's potential, educators can imbue the educational landscape with core values, bestowing a sense of purpose upon students beyond the academic realm. Brant's quintet of fundamental values—connection, authenticity, integrity, personal growth, and creativity—serve as navigational markers, guiding individuals toward a more enriching existence. The transition to a process-oriented approach, however, is not without its complexities. Brant addresses these challenges, offering valuable insights on navigating this transformative endeavor. Educators, too, receive counsel on making decisions in alignment with their core values and those of their students, elevating the educational experience. In a world characterized by swift technological evolution, Brant's counsel stands as a beacon of wisdom. He encourages us to embrace process-oriented objectives, inviting us to weave our values into every facet of life. This expedition leads individuals not merely toward connection but also to a profound sense of purpose, shaping lives of heightened significance. 00:00 Introduction 1:06 Introducing Brant Menswar and his approach to figuring out your values 2:25 Who do you choose to be in a world driven by AI? 4:42 Brent's views on AI as a creator and its values 6:25 Using AI to reframe and amplify your values, not to try to control outcomes 12:2 Amplifying values with AI in educational contexts 14:46 Brant's 5 core values: connection, authenticity, integrity, personal growth, and creativity 22:20 How to actually use these 5 values after identifying them 26:53 Main challenges when transitioning to a process oriented goal pursuit 31:14 How can educators make decisions based on their own core-values as well as their student's 38:19 Brant's advice for making the transition to process oriented goals Connect with Brant: Website: https://www.brantmenswar.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brantmenswar/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brantmenswar/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BrantMenswar/ Connect with Sabba: Website: https://designingschools.org/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/designing_schools/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sabba-quidwai/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/askmsq/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SabbaQuidwai/videos

Mosaic United Methodist Church

Many years ago, when I was first contemplating the idea of planting a church, I came across a book, entitled, “Journey Inward, Journey Outward.” Just the title was enough to spark a revelation in me. It was the first time I'd put words to what I sensed the Church was to be about. It is to cultivate in every person a rhythm of contemplation and action, prayer and service. That rhythm is critical to a healthy and deepening spiritual life because it is only as we connect with God that we can genuinely and lovingly connect with the world around us. That rhythm is at the heart of the series we begin this Sunday. "The Deeply Formed Life" is an opportunity to explore that rhythm of prayer and service, using some very specific topics to guide the conversation. Along the way, we'll discuss racial reconciliation, missional presence, sexual wholeness, and interior examination. I believe this conversation will call us deeper into our practice of the faith as it calls us deeper into our mission as a church. I look forward to diving in. ~ Carolyn

An extract from Unlocked by Tracy Loubser “Trapped in a passionless marriage. So, we become liars. We become liars trapped behind scriptures and moral facades. We learn to hide ourselves behind our reputations, as long as we look good to society. We put others and their aspirations before our own.  We are taught that if we make a promise before God, then that covenant is cast in stone, even if your feelings do not align. That if you were once out of integrity, you can never go back. Even if it means you become a blatant, perpetual liar. We learn that there is no point of return; and no turning forward either.  We learn that where we make our bed, we sleep. We learn that there is no justification solid enough to even tempt squeezing our new, evolved, wiser self through the cracks of a promise once made. We are told that we are warm when we are cold; that there are many things to be happy about, when we feel sad. When we cry out that we are hungry – hungry for more – we're told we should be grateful for the fill we already have on our plates. We are told how to feel. And we are told how not to feel. We are moulded into an expectation of uniformity; homogenised into a fictitious ideal of normality. So, we stay.  And we pretend. We mask and we ache. With a smile. We laugh when all we really want to do is cry. We close our eyes and focus on the positive and turn away from the knowing – a constant gnawing groan from somewhere deep inside of us. We tell ourselves that we're being silly – a hopeless reiteration of what we've been told is silly. We turn a deaf ear to the loud hungry pangs from our gut.”

E35: Interview With J.C. Hallman, Author of The Devil Is a Gentleman: Exploring America's Religious Fringe

Just to prove I'm not batshit crazy for taking the Journey Inward and can participate as a functioning member of society anytime I want, I interviewed author J.C. Hallman in July of 2021. J.C. Hallman is a triple threat of extremely important right now and tomorrow subject matter. We discuss his recent review of Netflix series The Queen's Gambit and first novel The Chess Artist: Genius, Obsession, and the World's Oldest Game. Cult and Scientology watchers everywhere will take an interest in Hallman's The Devil Is a Gentleman: Exploring America's Religious Fringe—a book which chronicles his chapter by chapter tour of American fringe religions from the Moonies to Satanism—and infiltrating Scientology using a cover persona. The Anarcha Quest, soon to be published, is based on Hallman's extensive research and discovered records of Anarcha, the enslaved Black woman and human subject on whom the controversial “father of modern gynecology” performed extensive experimental surgery. J.C. Hallman talks religious interpretation of Scientology's Fair Game policy, Swedenborgians, Yoga, Paganism, and drops the neato factoid that Chiropractics, very much alive and well today, actually came from a now dissolved religion. Most importantly, I ask J.C. Hallman how he feels about being a total failure at Scientology. Due to the conversational and spontaneous aspect of this interview, not all content is fact checked or accurate-such as when I grossly miscalculate David Miscavige's age. Please proceed at your discretion. References:J.C. Hallman's “Monumental Error” in Harper'shttps://harpers.org/archive/2017/11/monumental-error/J.C. Perfectionism is the belief that everything must be perfect all the time. A perfectionist sets impossible goals, and feels crushed when they are not achieved.Perfectionism can look like:Having a very high standard for yourself. You should achieve goals faster and better than anyone else.Focus on results over the process itself - outcome focusedLiving in a highly critical state Beating yourself up for any mistake dade- making it hard to learn from mistakes because they can be so paralyzing. Your worth is tied to the outcome. What is brainspotting? It's a mind/body therapy that works with your emotion brain instead of your thinking brain. When working with the emotion brain we are processing old narratives and old stories. We are reorganizing them in the brain and sometimes it looks like:Gaining perspective on a situationA new understanding on a situationGrieving to shift the past to stay in the past. For more on brainspotting and perfectionism visit https://empowermentwithinllc.com/ You can connect with Patrice Flanagan-Morris via Instagram @habit.of.healingConnect with Curiosity Junkie Podcast and Cassie Burton via The Journey Inward, Instagram & YouTubeSupport the show (https://paypal.me/chatecass)

The late Gordon Cosby, founder of the Church of the Savior in Washington, DC, often wrote about the shape of the Christian life involving our Journey Inward, Outward, and Together. Last Sunday we reflected upon the importance of listening to Christ, the Inward Journey, as a necessary practice for faithful discipleship. Listening well shapes our doing or the mission and activity of the Church. At Davidson UMC we say that “we are called to be the Body of Christ in our community.” And before we are the Body of Christ “out there,” or the Outward Journey, we are first the Body of Christ “in here”, in the life we share Together. In this week’s reading from Ephesians, we are reminded that the Church is a gift, and it is Christ who brings us together. Our Journey Together, how we are the Body of Christ in community, mirrors for the world the hope Christ has for all of humanity.

In this episode, we continue our conversation on emotionally healthy spirituality with a very important topic: The Wall. The wall is the emotional and spiritual block we all face. It can be a time of doubt, dryness, or sadness. It has been called desolation by St. Ignatius and the dark night of the soul by St. John of the Cross. What's important to remember about the wall is that it is something we will all go through, as it is necessary for us to grow in our relationship with God and in our discipleship. We can't control it, we can't pray our way out of it. We must persevere in our faith, seeking to learn what God is trying to teach us, and let Him take us through it. We trust that He will bring us through to the other side. Do not be discouraged when you go through walls of your own. It simply means that the Lord wants to grow in greater friendship with you - He is the potter, molding the hard clay of your heart to make it soft and pliable. It can hurt, but He is always with you and always knows what is best for you. Reflection Questions: 1. Where do you feel like you are on the stages of faith? (1:Life-changing awareness of God, 2:Discipleship/learning, 3:Active life, 4:Journey Inward, 5:Journey Outward, 6:Transformed in Love) 2. Can you identify any "walls" that you have gone through in your life? How did God bring you through them? What did you learn from them? 3. How can you prepare for future walls? (Such as journaling about past consolations, developing a good prayer routine/foundation, etc) As Amazon Associates, we earn on qualifying purchases. Today John called in with his amazing stories of global adventure seeking and challenging himself though mountaineering the tallest mountains on every continent and soaring high into the air kitesurfing. John has pushed himself to the extremes outwardly but the hardest challenge was the inward journey. It wasn't until he went to therapy and began to open up to his therapist that he realized that the journey inward can be more scary than any mountain or giant ocean wave he had faced yet. He says that climbing mountains has taught him how to hold on to those things in life and the kitesurfing taught him how to let go and soar. John has written a book called The Warrior Challenge for young kids takes them on 8 quests that teach them kindness, courage, boundaries and how to live with integrity to make the world a better place.
