Healing the Soul: The Missing Link in Medicine and Psychology with Dr. Katherine Kelly

When was the last time your doctor mentioned your soul during treatment? I'm willing to bet never—and that's precisely the problem Dr. Catherine Kelly addresses in this profound conversation about what's missing from modern medicine and psychology."The father of medicine, Hippocrates, said the soul is present in every illness and every organ over 2,000 years ago. Carl Jung said the same for psychology. But where is it now?" Dr. Kelly asks. As a former medical school professor, she witnessed firsthand how the soul has been systematically removed from our healing traditions despite being the most foundational aspect of who we are.In this eye-opening discussion, we explore the Soul Health Model—a revolutionary framework visualizing our wellbeing as a tree with ten essential branches, including physical, psychological, interpersonal, financial, sexual, and recreational health. For practitioners interested in incorporating soul health into their work, Dr. Kelly shares details about her new certification program designed to bring this missing dimension back to healing professions. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, feeling disconnected, or simply curious about a more holistic approach to well-being, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on how reconnecting with your soul might be the missing piece in your healing journey.Bio Dr. Katherine Kelly, is a licensed psychologist in her own psychotherapy, soul-healing/coaching and consulting practice in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Southern Colorado (1992) and both her Master's (1995) and Doctorate in Counseling Psychology (1999) from Indiana State University. She also earned a Master of Science in Public Health degree (2000) from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the university's Department of Family and Community Medicine. She has received specialized training from the Mind-Body Medical Institute of Harvard University and has been trained in various holistic, natural health, and spiritual methods of healing, including nutritional psychotherapy, aromatherapy, Pranic Healing, Reiki, Soul Realignmen,t and other practices. Her dedication to healing has been widely recognized as she was the recipient of the Provider of the Year Award by the regional Mental Health Association and was nominated as an Incredible Woman for a local community television network, which spotlights role models to inspire young women to pursue their own passions.Website and Social Media drkatherinetkelly.comSoul Heal https://drkatherinetkelly.com/level-one-soul-health-certification/We hope you have enjoyed this episode. Have you ever felt like your mental struggles are deeply rooted, hidden from view? I have. That's why I was so excited to speak with Dr. Katherine Kelly about her groundbreaking book on holistic anxiety treatment. As I mark 17 years in business, a journey marked by my own battle with anxiety, Dr. Kelly's insights bring a sense of hope. We discuss the deep connection between our soul and mental health, exploring how genetics, epigenetics, and ancestral trauma shape our well-being.Dr. Kelly's Soul Health Model sheds light on the impact of anxiety, likening our inner turmoil to a tree struck by lightning. This perspective acknowledges the spiritual and past-life wounds that conventional science often overlooks. Our discussion goes beyond managing symptoms, focusing on achieving genuine healing.Dr. Kelly and I discuss the wisdom of Hippocrates and Carl Jung, advocating for a renewed focus on the soul in modern medicine. By embracing our entire being, we can better navigate challenges like anxiety. If you're seeking a path to holistic healing and ready to address the soul's impact, join us on this enlightening journey.Bio Dr. Katherine T. Katherine T. Kelly, Ph.D., M.S.P.H. is a licensed psychologist in her own psychotherapy and consulting practice in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Southern Colorado (1992), and both her Master's (1995) and Doctorate in Counseling Psychology (1999) from Indiana State University. She also earned a Master of Science in Public Health degree (2000) from the University of Missouri-Columbia where she completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the university's Department of Family and Community Medicine. She has received specialized training from the Mind-Body Medical Institute of Harvard University, and has been trained in various holistic, natural health, and spiritual methods of healing. With 31+ years of direct clinical experience, Dr. Kelly doesn't just believe in helping others to heal; instead, her mission is to help them to evolve. Using her own integrative framework—the Soul Health Model (https://www.drkatherinetkelly.com/soul-health-model/)—Dr. Kelly approaches her work with clients from a psycho-spiritual perspective. She provides a uniquely progressive, yet down-to-earth approach to healing and is well-known in both the therapeutic and medical communities. She thrives as she helps clients to reach what she calls conscious evolution through a variety of self-designed methods. Her dedication to healing has been widely recognized as she was the recipient of the 2006 Provider of the Year Award by the regional Mental Health Association, and was nominated as an Incredible Woman for a local community television network, which spotlights role models to inspire young women to pursue their own passions. Dr. Kelly (http://www.amazon.com/Katherine-T.-Kelly-Ph.D.-M.S.P.H./e/B00CL1KNXA) has undergone her own ‘evolution', beginning her career as Coordinator of Alcohol and Drug Education at Indiana State University. She was later recruited to serve as the Director and Treatment Coordinator of a private traumatic brain injury program in the community. Following the completion of her training, she accepted a position as an Assistant Professor and Director of Behavioral Science in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Wake Forest University. She later entered private practice and founded/owned Branches Holistic Health and Wellness Center. She realized she could make a greater impact elsewhere—so she left that adventure to make room for her other main passions — writing and speaking. Dr. Kelly has authored several academic publications and is an ongoing contributor to both local and national health and wellness magazines (See Articles (https://www.drkatherinetkelly.com/articles-archives/)). Her book Soul Health: Aligning with Spirit for Radiant Living: Revised 2nd Edition (https://www.drkatherinetkelly.com/soul-health/) (2018) has been featured on over 350 national radio shows (see Audio (https://www.drkatherinetkelly.com/audio/) link) and her most recent book, “The Recipe for Radiance: Mastering the Art and Soul of Self-Care” (https://www.drkatherinetkelly.com/recipe-for-radiance/) was published in 2019. She currently owns The Soul Health Center (http://soulhealthcenter.com/), a collective of health and wellness providers and launched Soul Health Essentials– The Oils of Evolution (https://soulhealthessentials.com/) essential oils company in early 2019. The very soul of healthcare has been fractured and that is you, the millions of healthcare workers who took the biggest and deepest hit from the COVID-19 pandemic. Singer Marie Woodward lives in upstate New York, but she was able to watch Minnesota Opera mezzo soprano Mia Athey’s new vocal showcase “Self-Love: My Remedy in the Pandemic.” The two met while performing together at the Glimmerglass Opera Festival two years ago. Woodward admires how Athey created, directed, filmed and edited — not to mention sang —her one-woman showcase. As the title suggests, the songs follow a restorative journey for those stuck home during the pandemic. Athey is in her second season of the resident artist program at the Minnesota Opera. The 42-minute showcase is part of the opera’s “Apart Together” series, and it is available for free on YouTube through Saturday. Katherine Kelly of Minneapolis follows the work of a number of artists who inspire her to be bold and creative. One of those artists is Minneapolis-based illustrator Tori Hong, whose work ranges from whimsical “bunny affirmations” to recent artwork expressing solidarity with the people of Myanmar following the February coup. One project that Kelly was particularly excited to share is the “Growbook,” co-created by Hong and Cori Nakamura Lin. It’s an activity packet designed to spark conversation, healing and discovery. Courtesy of Tori Hong A sample page from “Growbook,” co-created by Tori Hong and Cori Nakamura Lin, an activity packet designed to spark conversation, healing, and discovery. The “Growbook” functions as an artist-created journal, complete with two coloring pages. Eleven pages of prompts invite the user to map their strengths, skills, views on conflict, and even recipes that have gotten them through the pandemic. The book is free to download and is designed to be shared in conversation with others. You can find the Growbook here. In this self-care-themed Art Hounds episode, we can’t leave out laughter. Trish Foster of St. Louis Park was one of several Art Hounds who wrote in about The Danger Committee, a comedy performance trio whose unique set of skills includes knife-throwing as well as juggling. Foster says both the adults and children in her family have enjoyed past performances by the troupe. “The fun thing about a Danger Committee show is that they love to do improv, and they are so skilled at it. You never see the same show twice. And the jokes are just flying at such a rapid pace. It’s so much fun.” The Danger Committee’s “Back to the Lab” performances at the Lab Theater in Minneapolis run Thursday through April 25. In compliance with health guidelines, the theater will operate at 25 percent capacity.

Criminal is one of the most gripping crime dramas ever made. It's unique format really nails the intensity of the situation and, as we already know the police have got their criminal, we're thrown deep into the detail of how the cops get them behind bars.Aside from the intensity of the script, it's perfomances are simply stunning. Whether it's the conveyor belt of stars such as Kit Harrington and Sharon Horgan playing the criminals, the duty solicitors trying to protect them - or the familiar faces of the police - everyone on set brings their absolute A game.Katherine Kelly plays DI Natalie Hobbs, and here she discusses what a fantastic experience both watching AND making the show is.Criminal is available on Netflix now.

How Minnesota's evictions ban is playing out

Updated: 3:45 p.m. The COVID-19 pandemic is dragging some families into a financial hole. Job loss means income loss, and one of the biggest costs for a lot of families is the monthly rent. With money tighter, what rights and protections do tenants have? What rights do property owners have? And has state help during the pandemic — like a ban on evictions and a $100 million housing assistance program — made the situation more manageable? Two experts in the housing industry joined the program to about the pandemic’s impact on tenants and landlords. And Chris Farrell, MPR’s senior economics contributor, joined the show to talk about the latest economic news. Gov. Tim Walz’s order halting evictions was updated at the beginning of August to allow for evictions under certain circumstances — including if the resident poses a threat to the safety of others or if they significantly damage the property. What constitutes a safety threat is not clear though and has led to some confusion among landlords, said Cecil Smith, president and CEO of Minnesota Multi Housing Association. The changes to the order also allow property owners to terminate or not renew a lease if the property owner or a family member needs to move into the home. In any case, property owners need to give written notice to tenants at least seven days before they file an action to evict. In most other circumstances, residents cannot be evicted while the order is in place. However, the order does not eliminate the need to pay rent. Even if they aren’t able to keep up with payments now, renters and homeowners will eventually need to pay all of the rent or mortgage payments they owe, said Katherine Kelly, an assistant attorney general for the state of Minnesota. Landlords should work with tenants to find resources and make a payment plan, Smith said. The order will remain in effect until at least Sept. 11 — when the declared peacetime emergency is set to end — but could be extended, as it has been several times this year. There’s concern that the end of the moratorium will result in a wave of evictions, something housing advocates hope to avoid with the help of additional aid. A new $100 million housing assistance program from the federal CARES Act became available Monday. The money is intended for Minnesotans who are financially struggling from COVID-19 and meet certain income requirements. Applicants can call 211 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. — staff speaking multiple languages will be on hand. Behind on rent? A new $100 million housing assistance program may help They can also text 211 and type “MNRENT,” or go online to 211unitedway.org. Once the process begins, applicants can track their status online. The fund can help pay housing costs like rent, mortgage, lot fees in manufactured home parks, and utility payments.  Kelly, Smith and a few callers provided several other resources for renters and landlords who are struggling financially. Small Sums: An organization that helps people experiencing homelessness or struggling to pay rent with expenses or supplies they may need when starting a new job. HOME Line: A nonprofit providing legal and educational resources for tenants. The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office: Tenants who are being asked to leave their residence during the peacetime emergency can file a complaint with the office. Minnesota Housing: A collection of state resources for finding and paying for housing. Guests: Katherine Kelly is an assistant attorney general for the state of Minnesota. Cecil Smith is president and CEO of Minnesota Multi Housing Association, a trade organization that represents about 1,800 of the state’s landlords. Chris Farrell is a senior economics contributor for MPR News. Share your story Have you lost income because of the pandemic? On a cool evening in April,1973, a cargo ship came into Shoreham Harbour, near Brighton, West Sussex. Sailors watched the murky water below as the ship got closer to port, and in the water, close to the side of the ship, they noticed something bobbing around on the surface.Hauling it out, they found a bloated body, still wearing a jacket and trousers. There were no feet attached, and sticking out from the collar of the jacket— a skull, stripped of all flesh and hair, no eyes, just bone. What they had uncovered that night was the dark side of Brighton, and a small town harbour full of crustaceans that had been feeding on human flesh. Thirty year old Lynda Hunter woke up one Friday in August 1987 with morning sickness and was glad she and her husband Andrew had that day off. They had been married less than a year and she was thrilled about the baby who was six weeks along. Lynda and Andrew went to the pharmacy and then onto the doctor for some relief. When she got home later that morning she packed a bag for her nightshift which wasn’t until the following day and said she had decided to go to her parents— she would tell them about the baby. According to Andrew, she was in a bit of a mood. He asked for a lift into town but before he could gather his things she and Shep the dog were gone. When Lynda’s sister arrived at the couples cottage later that day for a visit she had arranged, there was still no sign of her, in fact Lynda had never gone to her parents at all— so where was she?Following each episode of Katherine Kelly's brand new TV series Murdertown, Benjamin Fitton from They Walk Among Us unpicks a new case from each location. Akashic Records Reader - Akashic Record Reading & Soul Reading With Katherine Kelly PhD, MSPH https://www.drkatherinetkelly.com/about/ A CALL FOR CONSCIOUS EVOLUTION Who doesn’t struggle with the Human Condition? Of course, the answer to this question is no one. It is our experience of all life events—physical, emotional, social, financial, spiritual, and environmental that creates our unique sense of being human. But it is also our perceptions and experience of these events that often leaves us feeling confused, mired, and “stuck” in our “humanness” and unable to move forward on our own. As a therapist, author, speaker, and transformational travel leader, my mission is to elevate your consciousness to the point of experiencing radiant and optimal health—both inside and out. My work emphasizes the unity of mind, body, and spirit since these vital facets of ourselves cannot be separated. This unity serves to heighten your awareness and illuminate your path toward your optimal level of living. My Soul Health Model influences all of the work I do. This model serves as the blueprint to both your healing and evolution and offers you the opportunity to design your life to achieve your most radiant health. I use many integrative methods to help you reach your highest level of consciousness, healing, and most importantly, your personal evolution. Your soul development is an investment in your overall well-being and requires your commitment to evolve. Because I believe very strongly in creating a collaborative working partnership, we will work together toward developing your sense of conscious evolution—a moment-to-moment awareness of the meaning of events in your life that lead to an evolved way of living. Whether you embark in a psychotherapy experience, participate in a class, workshop, or seminar, or join me on a Soul Health Journey, my commitment to you is to lead you home—to yourself and to your optimal life.
