Nocera, and John A. Bargh. “Incidental Haptic Sensations Influence Social Judgments and Decisions.” Science 328, no. 5986 (2010): 1712–1715. Key use: Haptics, touch, weight, texture, hardness, and the idea that physical sensation can influence judgment and social interpretation. This supports the tactile layer of the episode: heavy doors, cold stone, worn rails, kneelers, relic cases, and sacred matter as meaningful contact.Higuera-Trujillo, Juan Luis, Carmen Llinares, and Eduardo Macagno. “The Cognitive-Emotional Design and Study of Architectural Space: A Scoping Review of Neuroarchitecture and Its Precursor Approaches.” Sensors 21, no. 6 (2021): 2193. Key use: Neuroarchitecture, emotional response to built environments, and the idea that architecture can be studied as a cognitive-emotional stimulus rather than only as art or style.Kilde, Jeanne Halgren. Sacred Power, Sacred Space: An Introduction to Christian Architecture and Worship. Oxford University Press, 2008. Key use: Major backbone source for Christian architecture as a system of worship, power, spatial order, and embodied religious experience. Oxford's description emphasizes Kilde's argument that church buildings represent and reify different forms of power, especially divine power.Morgan, David. The Sacred Gaze: Religious Visual Culture in Theory and Practice. University of California Press, 2005. Key use: Religious seeing, visual culture, sacred images, and the idea that vision is an active religious practice that can invest images, persons, times, and places with spiritual meaning.Taves, Ann. Religious Experience Reconsidered: A Building-Block Approach to the Study of Religion and Other Special Things. Princeton University Press, 2009. Key use: Helps frame religious experience without reducing it to one fixed category. Useful for the episode's approach to how experiences become interpreted, named, and treated as religious or sacred.Clark, Andy. Surfing Uncertainty: Prediction, Action, and the Embodied Mind. Oxford University Press, 2016. Key use: Predictive processing, active inference, and the idea that perception is not passive recording but active prediction and model-building. This supports the “brain does not enter a church like a camera” argument.Krueger, Joel. “Extended Mind and Religious Cognition.” 2016. Key use: Extended and embodied cognition applied to religious practice, ritual objects, and environments. Useful for arguing that worship is not only inside the head but supported by bodies, tools, spaces, and shared action.Oxford Academic. “Embodied Cognition in Ecclesial Practices.” In Oxford Studies in Analytic Theology, 2023. Key use: Christian practices, embodied cognition, Eucharistic action, and religious material culture as cognitively significant rather than merely symbolic.Piff, Paul K., Pia Dietze, Matthew Feinberg, Daniel M. Stancato, and Dacher Keltner. “Awe, the Small Self, and Prosocial Behavior.” Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 108, no. 6 (2015): 883–899. Key use: Awe, vastness, the “small self,” and the psychological effects of encountering something perceived as larger than the ordinary self. This supports the cathedral-scale and sacred-vastness argument.Tarr, Bronwyn, Jacques Launay, and Robin I. M. Dunbar. “Music and Social Bonding: ‘Self-Other' Merging and Neurohormonal Mechanisms.” Frontiers in Psychology 5 (2014): 1096. Key use: Music, synchrony, social bonding, rhythmic action, and group cohesion. This supports the sections on chant, group singing, ritual synchrony, and bodies acting together in sacred space.Ittyerah, Miriam. “Memory for Curvature of Objects: Haptic Touch vs. Vision.” 2007. Key use: Haptic memory, touch-based object recognition, and the idea that touch can produce durable memory traces. Useful for worn rails, thresholds, beads, icons, relic cases, and repeated sacred contact.Lange, Lisa S., et al. “Tactile Memory Impairments in Younger and Older Adults.” Scientific Reports, 2024. Key use: Modern tactile-memory framing; useful for the claim that tactile experience is remembered and retrieved as part of embodied life.Freedberg, David. The Power of Images: Studies in the History and Theory of Response. University of Chicago Press, 1989. Key use: Image response, embodied reaction to sacred or charged images, and why religious images can provoke devotion, fear, destruction, reverence, or bodily response.Plate, S. Brent. A History of Religion in 5½ Objects: Bringing the Spiritual to Its Senses. The Sacred and the Profane: The Nature of Religion. Key use: Sacred space, threshold, center, axis mundi, and the distinction between ordinary space and holy space. This becomes more important in Episode 2, but it also supports Episode 1's general sacred-space framework.van Gennep, Arnold. The Rites of Passage. Key use: Separation, threshold, and incorporation. Useful for the threshold logic that runs through the whole series.Turner, Victor. The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure. Key use: Liminality, transition, communitas, and the ritual power of in-between states.Tuan, Yi-Fu. Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience. Key use: Lived place, memory, experience, and the difference between abstract space and meaningful place.Smith, Jonathan Z. To Take Place: Toward Theory in Ritual. Key use: Ritual as place-making; sacred places are produced through repeated action, interpretation, and return.Morgan, David. Visual Piety: A History and Theory of Popular Religious Images. Key use: Popular religious images, devotional seeing, sacred practice, and how visual material becomes part of lived religion.Kieckhefer, Richard.

Let's flashback to 2018, in the weeks after ELLIOT EASTON and THE CARS were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we recorded this guitar deep dive and career retrospective with Easton in his home studio. On this episode Elliot plugs in and shows you exactly how he created iconic guitar parts that helped the Cars score many high-charting hit albums and singles. Elliot also shares music from his band, THE EMPTY HEARTS, and reflects on what he learned tracking Cars guitar parts with super-producers such as ROY THOMAS BAKER and ROBERT JOHN "MUTT" LANGE. Presented by Guitar Player magazine and guitarplayer.com. Hosted by JUDE GOLD — who, at the beginning of this episode, shows you how he recorded the guitar solo on Jefferson Starship's forthcoming single.

What should I wear today? Coffee or tea? Espresso or cappuccino? Work from home or go to the office? Our days are filled with questions."And one observation I made—with my clients, but also with myself—was that I increasingly use AI chatbots to get a decision. So I don't need to think."THE STORY OF CROESUS:Sixth century BC. The kingdom of Lydia. King Croesus, wealthy enough that 2,500 years later we still say "rich as Croesus."The Persian Empire is rising on his border. Should he attack first, or wait?Croesus tests every famous oracle. He gives every emissary the same instructions: on a specific day, ask what the king is doing. That day, Croesus does something deliberately bizarre—boils a tortoise and a lamb together in a bronze cauldron with a bronze lid.Only Delphi gets it right. He sends extraordinary gifts and asks his real question: should I attack the Persians? The Oracle answers: "If you cross the river Halys, a great empire will be destroyed."Croesus hears what he wants to hear. He marches. He is destroyed. The great empire that fell was his own."The Oracle was not wrong. The Oracle was useless. Because Croesus had not gone to Delphi to think. He had gone to Delphi for an answer. And once he had one, he stopped thinking."FRAME 1 — INTOLERANCE OF UNCERTAINTY (Carleton et al., 2007)Nick Carleton runs the anxiety lab at the University of Regina. He works with people who deal with uncertainty for a living—police, paramedics, firefighters.Intolerance of uncertainty is a deep, dispositional trait. Not pessimism. The inability to tolerate not knowing. One scale item captures it: "I'd rather know bad news than stay in a state of uncertainty."Carleton calls it transdiagnostic—it shows up across nearly every anxiety disorder. He has argued it may be the fundamental fear, evolutionarily ancient."It explains why we cannot leave the question alone. Why we will pay almost any price for an answer. Even the wrong one."FRAME 2 — COMPUTERS ARE SOCIAL ACTORS (Reeves & Nass, 1996)Two Stanford professors. The Media Equation. Clifford Nass died in 2013, age 55.Random flattery from a computer made participants rate the experience more positively—even when told the praise was random.Participants evaluated computers more favourably when they did the evaluation on the same computer. They were polite. To the computer's face. When asked afterwards if computers have feelings, every participant said no. But they had behaved as if the computers were people. Mindlessly."When ChatGPT says 'I think this might be a good approach,' it triggers social scripts millions of years older than computers. We are trusting it before we have decided to.""The Oracle at Delphi was a person speaking on behalf of a god. The Oracle on our laptop is a system speaking on behalf of nothing."FRAME 3 — ARTIFICIAL EPISTEMIC AUTHORITIES (Hauswald, 2025)Rico Hauswald, philosopher at TU Dresden. Social Epistemology, 2025.Human authorities—doctors, scientists, judges—are accountable. When they're wrong, the wrongness is visible.Benjamin Lange (Cambridge, 2025) names what's missing: AI lacks "epistemic failure markers.""When ChatGPT is wrong, it sounds exactly the same as when ChatGPT is right. The voice is the same. The confidence is the same. There is no signal."THE CLOSE:"Croesus knew his answer came from a source whose history could be tracked. We have a faster oracle, a more available oracle, a more confident-sounding oracle.""Whether we have a wiser one is a different question entirely."REFERENCES:Herodotus, Histories, Book 1.Carleton, R. Nicole is an acupuncturist with over 20 years of experience specializing in reproductive and emotional health, and her approach is unlike anything you typically hear in fertility. She blends traditional Chinese medicine, trauma informed care, and a deep understanding of how our bodies function to help people reconnect with themselves. The way she talks about fertility shifts it out of pressure and into pleasure, and I cannot wait for you to hear her perspective. In this episode:The difference between treating parts of the body versus the whole personWhat happens when trying to conceive starts to take over your lifeHow the pressure around fertility can build without you realizing itWhy your body needs to feel safe before it can shift into reproductionWhy changing patterns takes time and doesn't happen overnightThe role pleasure plays in supporting your systemWhy sex can start to feel like pressure instead of connectionWays to take the pressure off and bring some ease back inThank you so much for listening!

Season 20, Episode 7: Live from Lord's at the annual MCC Women's Day. Adam Collins brings you a series of chats from prominent women in cricket, proving that it's not just what happens on the field or on TV that keeps the juggernaut of the women's game rolling. From Meg Lay, the first woman to prepare an international cricket pitch, record-setting German international Tina Gough, Dutch captain and ICC Europe boss Esther de Lange, and sports apparel pioneer Leigh Burns from our partners at Lacuna Sports. But the star of the show was our own Enakshi Rajvanshi, who marked her Lord's debut by uprooting some stumps. Host Ricky Sacks is joined by David Harris, Ian Lubin and TJ Ramini as the third managerial era of the 2025/26 Tottenham Hotspur season is about to commence, as Roberto De Zerbi makes his second Premier League debut on Sunday, away to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. We discuss Roberto De Zerbi's first pre-match press conference in which he boldly states he knows his first mission is to keep Tottenham in the Premier League but believes the club has everything to challenge for the title in the future. We also reflect on a week which has seen Mohammed Kudus could miss the rest of the season in a major blow to new Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi. Kudus has been out since the start of January with a quad injury, but had begun to ease his way back into training before the international break. Kudus had not missed a single game through injury for West Ham but could potentially miss half of his first season at their north London rivals. It was hoped he would be in contention to face Sunderland this weekend in De Zerbi's first game in charge. However, Spurs have confirmed that Kudus could be set to undergo surgery, ruling him out of Spurs' final seven games of the season and casting his World Cup hopes with Ghana into doubt. We debate the icompetence shown by current Sporting Director Johan Lange in which Spurs had the chance to reinforce their squad in the January transfer window, despite the difficulties involved in that market, but only brought through the door a midfielder in Conor Gallagher and 19-year-old left-back Souza, while selling last season's top scorer Brennan Johnson just days before Kudus first suffered his serious quad injury. Unfortunately, of the long-term players out when Lange made those comments ahead of the trip to face Manchester United in early February, Kudus, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies all remain side-lined two months later and were added to a week after by Wilson Odobert. Therefore once again raising concern over the medical rehabilitation of players. The panel also reflect news that Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to sign Andy Robertson as a free agent this summer, subject to retaining their Premier League status and a price has been set for reported goalkeeper target James Trafford. We finally close on our thoughts of Sunderland, given the fact that The Black Cats are running the risk of losing four straight home league games for the first time since September 2017 in the Championship, and their shoddy Stadium of Light sequence has contributed to their bottom-half ranking in the Premier League table, although they are still within touching distance of seventh-placed Brentford at the time of writing.
