On episode 511 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Kevin Gibson, BSN, RN, aka: The Boot Nurse, an NCLEX success coach and mentor with a compelling story to tell and advice to share for those facing this high-stakes exam. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Kevin discuss top strategies and the essential mindset shift needed to pass the NCLEX. They also discuss their mutual experience of bouncing back from failing the exam, and how they pushed through to finally conquer it and become licensed registered nurses. Kevin Gibson's journey is a testament to perseverance, service, and dedication. His career began in the U.S. Navy in 2007, where he served honorably until 2024. During his tenure, he specialized in surgical technology, becoming an instructor in 2015 and a master instructor a year later. He was instrumental in teaching a variety of programs, including tactical combat casualty care and pre-hospital trauma, showcasing his commitment to excellence and his ability to mentor and lead. In 2018, Kevin achieved another significant milestone by earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. However, his path was not without challenges. Between 2018 and 2019, Kevin faced three unsuccessful attempts at passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). It was through these trials that Kevin's true passion emerged. In 2020, after his fourth attempt, he successfully passed the NCLEX-RN, turning his earlier failures into a profound source of motivation. This experience inspired him to help others overcome their fears of failure. He founded a coaching and mentoring service dedicated to helping nursing students turn their dreams into reality by conquering their own NCLEX exams. In 2023, Kevin expanded his impact by launching an on-demand 7-day NCLEX Course, which has since helped over 4,000 nursing students achieve success. His dedication to helping others mirrors his commitment to his country, emphasizing his passion for service beyond his military career. Just as he served his country, Kevin continues to serve others, striving to make a significant impact in the lives of those who aspire to succeed against the odds. CDC Confirms Nations First Severe H5N1 Infection Of Human A patient in Louisiana was hospitalized with a severe case of avian influenza (H5N1), marking the first instance in the United States of severe illness linked to the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today in a news release and press call. CDC said the Louisiana patient, one of 61 human cases to occur in the United States since April, was infected with a D1.1 virus recently detected in wild birds and poultry in the U.S. and in recent human cases in British Columbia, Canada, and in the state of Washington. Officials noted the D1.1 strain of H5N1 is different from the B3.13 genotype detected in dairy cows, sporadic human cases in multiple states, and some poultry outbreaks in the U.S. No person-to-person spread of H5 bird flu has been detected. California State Of Emergency, New Human Infections, Canadian Struggles all due to H5N1 Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency in an effort to streamline the Golden State's response to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Several California agencies have developed coordinated responses to address and minimize farm worker exposures, lower raw dairy product contamination and mitigate the spread of the virus, the governor said in a statement: He said “This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak.” About 680 dairy farms are under quarantine from HPAI outbreaks, while 6.2 million birds have been hit and 36 people infected across California. A commercial poultry worker in northwest Iowa is now the first confirmed human case of HPAI in the Hawkeye State, according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS). An estimated 6.7 million birds have been affected in more than a dozen counties across Iowa, according to USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that more than 13.9 million birds have been impacted by HPAI in the most recent tally of the spread of H5N1 infections across nine provinces. British Columbia is reporting the highest number of HPAI cases among 8.3 million birds. New Brunswick has the lowest number of birds affected by avian influenza with fewer than 100 birds at two locations being confirmed with the virus. Beef Processor Fined For Odor Violations The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) fined STX Beef Company $200,000 for violations linked to foul odors coming from its Corpus Christi facility, according to a local report. The penalty follows years of complaints about smells traced to cattle processing and wastewater management issues. TCEQ also cited equipment failures, inadequate scrubber systems and poor recordkeeping. Of the fine, $2,000 is already paid, with $40,000 due soon. Over $80,000 will support Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's AutoCheck program, addressing regional vehicle emissions. The company has 30 days to submit an odor control plan, including equipment repairs and new systems, and must comply with air quality rules for five years. Corporate Transparency Act Reporting Requirement Will Return Due to Court Ruling Producers pay attention now. The Corporate Transparency Act filing requirements are back in effect following a court decision that reverses the injunction that previously halted this mandate. NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs Kent Bacus said that The Corporate Transparency Act requires millions of family farmers and ranchers to file complex paperwork and disclose beneficial ownership information with the federal government under penalty of severe fines and jail time. Earlier last week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a nationwide preliminary injunction on the enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act, holding that the government is likely to prevail in a constitutional challenge. This decision places many small businesses in jeopardy that have not yet filed Beneficial Ownership Information with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In light of the Fifth Circuit's decision, FinCEN announced it will delay enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act until January 13, 2025. It is highly recommended to visit with your accountant, tax professionals, and or attorneys on exactly what needs to be filled and where. In this episode Cath was joined by Stephen Terrell. Steve Terrell is a Healer, Teacher, and Author and sees clients at Austin Attachment and Counseling Center in Austin, Texas. He founded this center over 20 years ago for the treatment of Developmental Trauma and Adoption related issues. He has a Master's Degree in Counseling from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and a Doctorate in Psychology California Coast University and sees his clients under his license as a professional counselor in Texas. Steve and Cath discuss Steve's path to fatherhood, what he learnt about parenting from his first son, healing work and the importance of turning up in the relationship. Steve shared about what has been most important in terms of supporting himself and how he breaks things down to make them manageable/achievable. There is so much wisdom in this episode, I hope you find this supportive ahead of the festive period. It was his experience as a clinician and single parent of two adopted sons, along with his understanding of the ACEs that Steve came to the realization that there needed to be a way to reach non-verbal, or early developmental trauma, without spoken language. Out of this realization he developed Transforming Touch® and a training program designed for understanding and healing developmental trauma: “Transforming the Experience-Based Brain: A Regulation-Based Approach to Working Developmental Trauma” (which is offered internationally and offers an understanding of developmental trauma through a new lens). This new lens includes working with primitive reflexes, learning the language of early trauma, working with physiological regulation, understanding the neuro sequential development of the brain, working with survival parts, understanding attachment in the somatic relationship, and more.If you're enjoying this podcast. According to a study by M-AAA, artists are one of the most educated populations amongst working sectors. However, degrees and/or institutional support has never been, nor should be, the deciding factor on whether or not someone is a legitimate/good/worthy artist. MFAs, ideally, should be programs that help an artist improve their craft, but others have interpreted the MFA as a necessity to be ‘taken seriously’ as an artist. Not to mention, the ‘institution’ can be a stifling & uniforming experience for artists. We will have two guests to offer their experiences as successful creatives who have or don’t have MFAs and can speak to the pros and cons of either decision.Grace Zuñiga is an artist, curator, and arts administrator originally form Sandia, Texas. In 2007, she received her BFA from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, with a focus in photography and in 2012 received her MFA in studio art, with a focus in printmaking, from the University of Georgia, Lamar Dodd School of Art in Athens,Georgia. In May of 2014, Zuñiga completed a nine-month residency at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and currently holds the position of Creative Director at Sawyer Yards. In her role, Zuñiga strives to build bridges within Houston’s arts community by creating opportunities for local, national, and international artists and arts organizations.Deborah D.E.E.P. UAV News FAA Approves Solar Drone Flights Over Hawaiian Island Japanese drone company HAPSMobile has a waiver to fly a solar-powered UAV over Lanai. The HAWK30 will act as a stratospheric telecommunications platform - a High Altitude Platform Station, also called a High Altitude Pseudo Satellite. The project is a collaboration between HAPSMobile, the University of Hawaii, and the Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex which is managed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. AeroVironment is HAPSMobile's aircraft development partner for the HAWK30. In related news, see HAPSMobile Working Together with Facebook to Accelerate the Adoption of HAPS. Amazon requests FAA approval of delivery-drone plans Amazon has filed a 29-page petition with the FAA requesting approval to use their MK27 delivery drone before getting a certificate of airworthiness. Amazon would like to fly BVLOS and they ask for exemptions from certain aviation regulations that are more applicable to manned aircraft. The petition says delivery drones will fly autonomously but with one operator for each drone in flight. Eventually, Amazon would like to have one operator for multiple drones "subject to FAA approval based on flights and simulations that demonstrate required levels of safety."The FAA will take public comments on the petition until August 28, 2019. See Petition for Exemption; Summary of Petition Received; Amazon Prime Air in the Federal Register. She was recently deployed to a damaged dam that forced the evacuation of about 1,500 residents. She commented: “Personally, I think the best way to encourage women to get involved is to support each other. The future of aviation appears to be heading in the direction of unmanned aircraft and it's important that men and women are equally represented in this field.” Also, “It's an achievement to be labeled the first, however, I think it's more important to ensure that I am not the last.” Drones, smartphones and sensors could provide a new solution to elderly falls Researchers from Baghdad's Middle Technical University and the University of South Australia have designed a system to remotely monitor elderly people. It detects heart rate and temperature abnormalities and provides urgent first aid via a drone if a fall occurs. The pursuit of a musical career crosses the mind of most children. But, for most, a vocation is nothing more than a farfetched fantasy that will never come true. Music is often considered more appropriate as a leisure activity that need be abandoned when a person enters adulthood. How are men and women to forge a career as a musician when it is largely considered taboo to pursue such a position as a lifetime career? In Destined for Greatness: Passions, Dreams, and Aspirations in a College Music Town (Rutgers University Press, 2018), sociologist Dr. Michael Ramirez examines the lives of 48 independent rock musicians who sought out a music career in a college town that is renowned for its music scene. Ramirez used a life-course approach to understand the wealth of experience that led to some, but not all, individuals to fashion careers in the music industry. What if there was an instruction manual for television? Not just for the casual consumer, but for college students interested in learning about the culture of television, written by some of the field’s top scholars? In How to Watch Television (New York University Press, 2013), editors Ethan Thompson and Jason Mittell have put together a collection of 40 original essays from some of today’s top scholars on television culture. Each essay focuses on a single television show, and each is an example of how to practice media criticism on an academic level. Thompson, Associate Professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and Mittell, professor at Middlebury College, also contributed essays to the collection. As the authors explain: “This book, the essays inside it, and the critical methods the authors employ, all seek to expand the ways you think about television.” Learn more about your ad choices.
