North America’s electricity grid faces a shortfall of power. A grid policy expert explores one region’s efforts to ensure reliability and the controversies its proposals have raised. --- In December, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, or NERC, released its annual assessment of grid reliability across North America. The results were concerning. NERC, which is the organization responsible for setting grid reliability standards, reported that electricity supply is struggling to keep up with rapidly growing demand across much of the U.S. and Canada. In several major grid regions, electricity shortfalls could occur under challenging conditions within the next one to three years. On the podcast, Abe Silverman, assistant research scholar at the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute at Johns Hopkins University, discusses the threat of electricity supply shortages with a focus on one area of the grid in particular, the PJM Interconnection. PJM is the largest regional grid operator in the U.S., serving 65 million people in the eastern part of the country. PJM recently announced that it, too, could face a capacity shortage as early as 2026. To date, the grid operator has undertaken a complex set of actions to address its challenges, with more efforts on the way. Silverman explores PJM’s looming supply shortfall, and examines the steps it’s taking to shore up supply. He also explains the controversies that some of these actions have raised. Abraham Silverman is an assistant research scholar at the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and former general counsel for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. Citing a new research paper, the chart of the week comes from research findings that carbon taxes inordinately penalize the poors, “lower-income groups are affected disproportionately, because they spend a smaller share of their expenditure on products that benefit from exemptions than their higher-income counterparts.”     The paper is called Distributional Impacts of Heterogenous Carbon Prices in the EU and looked at European countries, however, the findings around the discrepancy apply anywhere – why? Carbon taxes aren't uniform across all countries, and aren't uniformly applied across all industries – and that leaves differentials and gaps that the IMF claims are being exploited by rich people to the exclusion of low income households. The UK's latest renewable auction has given a significant boost to the offshore wind sector. With a record budget of 1. 5 billion pounds, the auction awarded contracts to 131 wind, solar, and tidal projects, capable of generating almost 10 gigawatts of capacity. Notable winners include Orsted's Hornsea 4 project in Iberdrola's East Anglia two, and three projects. However, analysts note that this still falls short of the capacity needed to meet the country's target of 60 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. The UK has reached a significant milestone in wind power generation capacity. The country has surpassed the 30 gigawatt mark of combined offshore and onshore wind installations. This milestone was achieved with the commissioning of SSE Renewable's 443 megawatt Viking Wind Farm. in Shetland this past June. According to Renewable UK, the UK's current wind capacity can meet the annual power demand of over 26 million homes and reduce carbon emissions by more than 35 million tons per year. In Sweden, Vattenfall has decided to pause the development of the Swedish Krikers Flak offshore wind power project due to unfavorable investment conditions. This project, located about 30 kilometers south of Trollberg, was estimated to generate 2. 7 terawatt hours of fossil free electricity annually. Fattenfall cited the lack of a reasonable connection point to the national grid offshore as a key factor in this decision. U. S. wind energy investment has seen a significant boost in the first half of 2024, according to Bloomberg NEF's Renewable Energy Investment Tracker. While solar investment fell by 12 percent to 26. 5 billion, wind projects secured 12 billion in funding. This surge has contributed to a 63 percent increase in total renewable energy investment in the U. S. Orsted, the Danish company developing Rhode Island's first commercial offshore wind project, has announced plans to expand its presence in the Ocean State. The company will open a new engineering, procurement, and construction hub in Providence, relocating to a 17, 000 square foot office building. The impact of opioid addiction and overdoses continues to be felt in New Jersey and across the country. Since 2018, tens of thousands of New Jerseyans have experienced an overdose and more than 15,000 have died of a suspected drug-related death. To combat this epidemic, New Jersey has worked to increase harm reduction efforts throughout the state including expanding the availability of naloxone through statewide distribution days. In January 2023, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced a program that allows anyone 14 years or older to acquire naloxone anonymously and at no cost at participating pharmacies across New Jersey. The NJ Department of Human Services partnered with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy and its Medicaid division to craft and implement this unique program.

NJ hits reset on offshore wind, approves two massive projects - VIA EE NEWS BY POLITICO...New Jersey was ground zero for offshore wind's woes in 2023. Now, it's a testing ground for the industry's recovery. New Jersey utility regulators awarded contracts Wednesday to a pair of the largest offshore wind projects ever planned in the United States. The two projects combined would generate enough power to supply 1.8 million homes and deliver an emissions cut equivalent to removing nearly 1.3 million cars from the road. The decision by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities came on the heels of a Danish developer's move last year to cancel two projects slated to serve the state. The cancellation dealt a major blow to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy's climate and clean energy goals and raised serious questions about the future of offshore wind in the United States. Cindy Zipf uses her passion for science and advocacy to create campaigns and programs to drive public policy and reduce pollution.  Since its beginning in 1984, she has been at the helm of COA, the lean, green, ocean pollution fighting machine that is the only full-time ocean advocacy organization dedicated exclusively to the NY and NJ region. The poll, which consisted of likely voters, showed Biden losing to Donald Trump in a hypothetical matchup—50% to 49%. 3:15pm- The U.S. military has established a hotline to help recover a missing Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II valued at $90 million. The stealth jet went missing after a pilot was forced to eject over North Carolina. 3:30pm- J.D. Tuccille of Reason writes: “If there's ‘no evidence' of wrongdoing, as many pundits insist, why is the Republican House majority fooling with an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden's business dealings with his son, Hunter? Well, when talking heads say, ‘no evidence,' they mean ‘no smoking-gun proof.' And they're right; the current case against the president probably wouldn't prevail in court. PJM Interconnection is in a race to shore up electric grid reliability as the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy accelerates. --- In February PJM Interconnection, the largest wholesale electricity market in the US, published a report that points to the very real possibility that electricity supply in the market could fall short of the level needed for reliable grid operation in just five years. The potential shortfall is tied to the pace of the energy transition, in which fossil fuel generators, and coal plants in particular, are retiring faster than they can be replaced by new clean and renewable generation. The report has led to a flurry of activity in PJM, as its members rush headlong into a process to reform the way the market manages, and values the reliability that generators bring to the electricity system. Abe Silverman, Director of the Non Technical Barriers to the Clean Energy Transition program at Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy, explores efforts underway in PJM to revise market rules to ensure that supply meets demand at all times, including during extreme weather events that have recently threatened the reliability of the grid. The resource adequacy challenges to be addressed are immensely complex, and extend beyond the fundamentals of energy technology to encompass the diverse economic and environmental priorities at play in the market and, more broadly, across the nation. Additionally, Dr. Kirsch is a current member of the New Jersey Board of Physical Therapy Examiners and President of the Board of Directors of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Dr. Kirsch's commitment and service to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is extensive, with her holding appointments as President and Chief Delegate of APTA's New Jersey Chapter; as a member of APTA's Ethics and Judicial Committee, and its Reference Committee; and serving on multiple task forces for ethics and clinical education. In 2006, Dr. Kirsch was awarded the APTA Lucy Blair Service Award; in 2014, she became a Catherine Worthingham Fellow. In 2017, Dr. Kirsch was awarded the Distinguished Professional Award from the New Jersey Chapter of APTA. A federal infusion of $80 billion in infrastructure spending is generating new levels of innovation and cooperation when it comes to maintaining and upgrading the electrical grid. In this episode of Grid Talk, we hear from Dianne Solomon who is a commissioner on the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU). She also is a member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners and currently serves as Chair of the Committee on Critical Infrastructure.This gives her a unique perspective on how federal dollars will be spent across the states.“There's no 50-state agreement on how and where the grid needs to be improved, in what fashion. It really is based upon where you are located and where you stand is sort of where you sit in terms of what you…each state determines what the needs are for their area. But the one thing that all commissioners can agree upon is their charge as commissioners and that's to ensure safe, reliable service at reasonable rates.” Solomon also talks about the role of innovation in shaping the grid of the future. “There is a tremendous amount of innovation being supported in the utility space at both the federal and state level. The Committee of Critical Infrastructure that I chair has a great working relationship with the Department of Energy and that's always helpful. The states' initiatives with the federal government is going to be very important in moving these innovations forward.” Commissioner Solomon was confirmed to serve as Commissioner of the Board of Public Utilities in 2013.  She was re-confirmed in 2017. Prior to her appointment to the NJBPU she served as Commissioner of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which is responsible for operating the Atlantic City Expressway, Atlantic City Airport, and shuttle service in and around South Jersey.Commissioner Solomon is a graduate of Rider University with a degree in Political Science.

Ultimately, that will dictate whether or not your standards should be modified. But if there's a modification, the modification should be a revamping of your structure and it ought to have very clearly defined parameters around it. The new sample lesson plans, some of which are accompanied by animated videos, are part of a broader, K-12 health and sex education curriculum adopted by the New Jersey Board of Education. The plans, which were first reported by Fox News, are now being reviewed by individual school districts in the state. In one proposed lesson plan aimed at fifth graders entitled 'It's All about the Hormones,' students are instructed to watch a video containing animation called 'Puberty and Transgender Youth.' Murphy told Fox News on Monday that while he believes parents should have a say in the education of their children, 'some are using this as an opportunity to score political points and to further divide us – us vs. them – and I say that on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ communities.' Dentists are experts in infection control. This is why it's so important for patients to get connected to a dentist when experiencing pain or infection. I recently launched the U.S. Dental Triage so that we can help keep people out of the emergency rooms by connecting them with dentists who can treat them.What other precautions will dentists take to make sure the patient stays safe when visiting their office?The dentist will ask you to call them once you arrive at the office and they will come out to the car to get you and take you directly to a pre-sterilized room. So you have that desire to create. And as you create in your business and as you create in your profession, your ego is stroked. Ok. The ego stroking that comes from being the lawyer is a certain amount. It is a much bigger ego stroke to have a large entity of other people who are also exceptional, doing things alongside you, and only have that opportunity because you created what you created.

And it becomes very challenging for you to make accurate projections. Because what you can expect off of search engine optimization, very different than what you can expect off a person to person marketing or person to person networking. OK, so I want you to envision that series of funnels, right? This is what our marketing plan is. You're going to have that series of funnels for each marketing activity that you do, and then you're going to start applying some numbers. OK. So the first number that you have to apply to this is the number of clients that you project from each of those activities. Right? Top of the funnel, you're going to have a really big number. Bottom of the funnel, not so much. 00:42:07 (59 Seconds) Now, I would never recommend that you build your law firm on one funnel. You have to know again the impressions of a particular funnel leading down to the clients. And you're going to be hypothesizing, at least at the beginning, until you have done the marketing activity with regularity and consistency, enough to know that on the balance you can project reasonably. This particular funnel leads to a certain amount of clients and you need to know what types of cases are being generated from each funnel so that you can do that math as well. Right. So the example I gave you earlier, public speaking, one stage equals thirty thousand dollars. That thirty thousand dollars wasn't one thirty thousand dollar case. It might be on average six five thousand cases or it might be twelve twenty five hundred dollar cases. But if you don't know the difference, you don't know how to prepare for the work that's going to come in from your marketing.

Employee expects to get it because they're employed and owner expects that you will get it only if the firm is producing a certain amount of money and only if you do certain things, then oftentimes there's a triggering of guilt and shame, particularly guilt, because the owner perceives that he or she did not lead the employee to a reasonable expectation. 00:34:06 If you are prioritizing others to the detriment of your business, meaning you don't have it, but you're going to pay it out by virtue of taking a loan or you're going to pay it out by virtue of not taking the salary, or you're going to pay it out by virtue of not making an investment in the future. What you are really doing is saying that my need as the business owner to feel good about myself supersedes your needs as the employees to have a fiscally sound employment, you know, experience.

So if you think about it, there are three primary expenses that you're going to have in a law firm. You're going to have compensation to the person doing the work. You're going to have the overhead to do the work. And that's the stuff of the files, right. The the ink, the paper, the machines, the licenses, all of the stuff of running the business. And then you're going to have the profit. And you need to have profit, even if you're not planning to take that profit and stick it in your pocket. You need to have profit in order to reinvest in the business and also to weather the economic storms of unexpected expenses, downturns and market. 00:18:21 We either get convenience over money too soon, i.e. we're tired of working so hard. So we work harder to the point where we feel like we can't work any harder. And then we go out and get an employee, whether we have properly monetized that person or not or whether we can actually afford that person or not. And then we have added to our stress, because now we've taken away the stress of having too much do. But we've added the stress of hustling to pay somebody. That is not a wise choice. 00:31:10 But the goal is to look at how you can monetize work upward. OK. That means from the bottom up, you want every person that comes into the business to create more billing opportunity or more collecting opportunity or more monetizing opportunity or more selling opportunity for people that are higher up the food chain. So that may very well mean that when you hire someone that that person isn't going to be a biller. They're not going to be directly working with clients, that they're going to create economic space for others that are.

And the problem is we don't often know where that cap is. So when you create a strategy that says I'm going to work harder in order to get myself to that next place, you are always going to have a question mark as to how far you can go because your body and your mind require rest and rejuvenation to work at your best. And if you deprive either your mind or your body or likely both, of that rest, you are going to see not only diminishing returns, but you're going to hit a cap at some point. They're just the subject of bad selling because you don't know how to sell, OK? And if you don't know how to sell and if you think of yourself as just a professional and not a salesperson, I hate to break it to you. If you own a business, you are in the business of sales. If you don't sell anything in your business, you don't have a business, you have a hobby. You have to sell people on the idea of working with you. And that does not mean convincing them or tricking them or persuading them. That means getting in touch with what their problem is and offering them a solution and doing it in a way that it's all about the client.

But I would say at least twice a year. And a lot of people think, oh, I just need it during tax time, but sometimes by tax time, it can be a little late to take advantage of any strategies. So we say please meet once towards the end of the year and then another at tax time. And, really you want to reach out when there's any changes in your business. I mean, maybe you're looking to purchase an office space or you're adding another partner. Any major changes should be communicated so you don't get to tax time, and your CPA is like, oh, if you told me that last year, I could have helped you with that. So. 00:21:12 (50 Seconds) – Allison My accountant, so my accountant can shoot me a message and say, hey, I know that you just added three new team members and I know that you've got bonuses coming up at the end of the year or I know you're going to be doing some some gifting through the company. Let's figure out the best way to do that so that we can maximize your tax benefit. And if you have those two different professionals that don't ever communicate, the bookkeeper is on one place, the accounting team is on another place, then you as the business owner have to really be intentional about bringing your financial team together to give you advice periodically. And it doesn't take a whole lot to do that. I mean, it literally is just schedule yourself a quarterly meeting and invite them both to come and have everybody have access to the reports so that you can have those strategy sessions. Don't be passive in trying to get advice for your business. You have to be intentional about seeking that.

And then when they are asked to show it, when they're asked to demonstrate it, when they're asked even just to give you a concrete example, they oftentimes cannot do that. And when they can't do that, you know that they either are not confident in their ability or if they are, that they just simply don't have the skill that they allege that they did. 00:34:45 (45 Seconds) When you hire a misfit, you are also creating an opportunity for yourself. So in every lost opportunity, in every struggle, in every strife and every discord, there is the opportunity for greatness that comes with that. So sometimes you may be looking to keep exactly what you have, in which case you want to hire somebody who's exactly like the people that are already here. And other times you might want to step out of your existing culture because you want to reform your culture. You want your culture to advance.

Not saying that this person has to be someone who's going to set the world on fire. But you have to expect that a person who is in this role, who's going to be front facing forward, client facing most of their time, they have to be the kind of person that enjoys talking to people. They need to have the type of personality that engages through the phone because most of our sensory information comes in through our eyes.   00:07:31 (40 Seconds) But before you even get to the point of getting them to selling, you have to have the right mindset for what they're doing on the phone. And one of the things that we found in the industry of looking at people that are successful with intake is they are naturally inquisitive people. That means they are going to naturally be oriented toward asking questions and figuring out what's going on and digging deeper beyond the surface of what they're told, because if they take at face value everything that a person says on the phone before that person gets into your office, you will oftentimes have a glut of people to meet with who are just not appropriate prospects for your office whatsoever.

And many times that is not true. Many times we are making choices that have adverse consequences for our business and if we were to make a different choice, the consequence would be different. And so you have to start thinking about what exactly is the cause of the current circumstance that you're experiencing in your business, whether it's an uptick or a downward slide in business. Where did that come from and what are all the pieces that contributed to that so that you can start making different choices to change the outcome that you're experiencing. 00:35:57 (43 Seconds) There are ways for you to keep the standard the same in terms of production, but allow for some modification of what will actually be produced, meaning if I don't have the work to give to a client, I could give the work into a marketing initiative or I could give the work into a system for the firm, or I could give the work into, you know, pouring into the cultural morale, depending on how high your standards are. Ultimately, that will dictate whether or not your standards should be modified. But if there's a modification, the modification should be a revamping of your structure and it ought to have very clearly defined parameters around it. It should not be simply a wholesale walking away from the standards that you created. 00:41:31 (19 Seconds) But your goal is to be fully educated and to make decisions that are best for your business based on your business metrics and separating your emotional connection to those decisions from the analysis. And this is where taking stock of yourself and why you are doing what you were doing is very important.

What exactly is the difference between telehealth and telemedicine, and what must you update in your physician-signed plan of care/standing orders to cover you? From a documentation standard, how should ATs be properly documenting and logging Telehealth/telemedicine occurrences, and what should we consider when choosing a platform to utilize? Tim and Ryan discuss the likely challenges an AT will face when implementing and utilizing telehealth/telemedicine? J. Timothy Sensor, LAT, ATC, has been working as an Athletic Trainer at the Overlook Medical Center for Concussion Care since 2014. He has been a partner with Safe Sports Training Consultants, LLC, since 2013. He had been the Chief Athletic Trainer and Chief Clinical Supervisor at Kean University in Union, NJ from 1983 to 2013. Prior to that he was the Head Athletic Trainer at Ramapo College from 1977 to 1983. He is currently on the NATA Research and Education Foundation Board as the NATA District Two Chair, a position he has held since 2016. He served as the President of the Athletic Trainers Society of New Jersey (1989-1991). Mr. Sensor has held positions in a multitude of committees with the New Jersey Medical Society, EATA, NATA, and at Kean University. Mr. Sensor was the chair of the NATA District Secretaries/Treasurers Committee, a member of the New Jersey Medical Society Committee on Medical Aspect of Sports, a member of the Kean University Board of Trustees' Building, Finance and Audit Committee, and a member of the New Jersey Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health Advisory Board (PEOSH). He has also served on the Athletic Training Advisory Board to the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners since 2006. Our guest for this episode is Joe Fiordaliso, President of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. It hasn’t even been a full year since Governor Phil Murphy’s administration took office, and already New Jersey has quickly vaulted to a leadership position in offshore wind. In our conversation, President Fiordaliso discusses what this year has been like for him so far and what the role of offshore wind is in helping the state meet its clean energy goals. Our conversation covers New Jersey’s strategic planning process, its approach to regionalization, ORECs and more. President Fiordaliso and I sat down for the interview on September 10. As an example of just how fast things are moving in New Jersey, just one week after our interview the BPU voted unanimously to issue a solicitation for 1,100 megawatts of offshore wind, America’s largest single-state solicitation in history. Today, I will be interviewing Dr. Pamela D. Straker about her new book "Let Me Stop You Right There And 28 Other Lines Every CEO, Manager, And Supervisor Should Know" Let Me Stop You Right There...is a humorous book that examines interpersonal situations, presented as scenes, that arise in the workplace. The scenes describe office situations which, coupled with pictorial illustrations, allow the reader to quickly identify events in their own work lives for which the lines might have been useful. Essentially, the book gives "one liners" every person who manages others will find useful one time or over and over again. Dr. Straker, a licensed psychologist, life/business coach, certified school psychologist, and has more than 25 years experience as a mental health and management professional. In her current capacity as consultant, she serves as a Psychologist Peer Reviewer for the Optum Health/United Health Group. She recently served as a Trainer and Program Coach for Emotional Literacy within the Psychology Department of Yale University. Dr. Straker is also providing consulting services to the Special Services Department of the Hoboken, New Jersey Board of Education. Just to name a few!
