Brooklyn-based goth-folk duo Charming Disaster's upcoming album The Double—their seventh full-length release—explores the world that exists behind the one we know, featuring songs inspired by nature, mortality, magic, ritual, and literary genres ranging from science fiction to Victorian horror. The new album was co-produced by band members Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris with longtime collaborator, recording engineer Don Godwin. All but one of the ten tracks were recorded at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD, with one song recorded by circus music composer Peter Bufano in Boston, MA. The Double will be released on CD, as a 12-inch colored vinyl LP, and on all digital platforms on May 16, 2025. The vinyl will be released in a 2-disc package that also includes Charming Disaster's 2024 compilation Time Ghost, a collection of singles released over the last decade.   The Double invites listeners to step across the border of an alternate reality, where spells are cast, time travel is possible, plants are taking over civilization, and vampires lurk in the shadows. Adventures in the darkness lie beyond the threshold.   The album's ten songs include “Black Locust,” a lullaby about mortality; “New Moon,” a magical nature ritual; “Trick of the Light,” a reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula; “Time Machine,” in which Charming Disaster change the past and start over again; “Scavengers,” a walk in the woods with vultures and bones; “Beautiful Night,” a defiant response to struggles with depression; “Vitriol,” a tribute to artist Thomas Little, who turns guns into ink; “Haunted Lighthouse,” a swashbuckling sea voyage; “Gang of Two,” a true crime adventure; and “Green Things,” a love letter to what grows between the cracks (and its inevitable takeover).   The album features an array of talented collaborators. Co-producer Don Godwin, who has worked on Charming Disaster's entire discography, contributed bass, drums, and horns as well as engineering and mixing. “Haunted Lighthouse” features Broadway percussionist Mike Dobson along with circus composer Peter Bufano, who played piano and accordion and engineered the track at Cirkestra World Headquarters in Boston, MA (with additional tracking at Tonal Park). “Scavengers” features cello recorded by Kate Wakefield of the duo Lung, who also created the string arrangement for “Beautiful Night.” Stefan Zeniuk of Gato Logo contributed saxophone to “Green Things.”   In conjunction with The Double, Charming Disaster is releasing the second edition of their “oracle deck” (similar to a Tarot deck). The Charming Disaster Oracle Deck contains 72 cards (including 12 new cards for the second edition), each representing one of the songs from Charming Disaster's discography. The cards feature illustrations commissioned from more than thirty different artists. The deck can be used as a divination tool, or as a visual accompaniment to Charming Disaster's music. The duo themselves use these cards in their live performances to determine the set through the element of chance.   Charming Disaster was formed by Bisker and Morris in 2012, inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the murder ballads of the American Folk tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret. Together the duo write songs that tell stories about myth, magic, and mortality, using two voices to explore dark narratives and characters with a playfully macabre sensibility.   On their critically acclaimed albums Love, Crime & Other Trouble (2015), Cautionary Tales (2017), and SPELLS + RITUALS (2019), Charming Disaster explored death, crime, folklore, and the occult. On Our Lady of Radium (2022), they turned their attention to science and explored the life and discoveries of pioneering scientist Marie Curie. On Super Natural History (2023), they united the natural world and the metaphysical realm in a musical cabinet of curiosities.   The duo put out two releases in 2024: Time Ghost, an album-length collection of songs released as singles between 2013 and 2024; and Dance Me to the End of Bela Lugosi's Lovesong, an EP of covers paying tribute to a few of the band's influences: Leonard Cohen's “Dance Me to the End of Love,” “Bela Lugosi's Dead” by Bauhaus, and The Cure's “Lovesong.”   In Charming Disaster's live shows, the duo combine vocal harmonies and clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, and foot percussion, with a cabaret-influenced performance style that straddles the line between concert and theatre and has been described as “haunted vaudeville” (Splice Magazine). Charming Disaster's music has been featured on the spooky hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale. They have opened for legendary cello-rock ensemble Rasputina, Goth icon Voltaire, and Amanda Palmer's punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. Their concerts have captivated audiences across the United States and in Europe. They have appeared alongside storytellers, comedians, fire eaters, puppets, burlesque artists, poets, and circus performers. Saturn will be in Aries through Sep. 1, 2025, retrograde back into Pisces until Feb. 13, 2026, then returns to Aries until April 12, 2028. Transits of Saturn describe periods when we're challenged to become more mature, wiser, and more disciplined. [25:57] Saturn was last in Aries between April 7,1996-June 8, 1998 and and Oct. 25, 1998-Feb. 28, 1999. If you were born then, you'll be having your first Saturn return. And if you were born between March 3 1967-April 29 1969, you will be having your second Saturn return. The Saturn return is when transiting Saturn returns to its exact position in your birth chart. Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods for the week: On May 5 (6:03 am PDT), the Moon in Leo squares Uranus in Taurus. It's VOC for 6 hours 37 minutes, then enters Virgo (12:40 pm PDT). Try something new and hopefully it will be something you enjoy. [3:42] On May 7 (9:11 pm PDT), the Moon in Virgo opposes Saturn in Pisces. It's VOC for 2 hours 55 minutes, then enters Libra on May 8 (12:06 am PDT). Escape feelings of being underappreciated by using Virgo tactics to distract yourself. [5:02] On May 9 (11:17 pm PDT), the Moon in Libra trines Jupiter. It's VOC for 13 hours 41 minutes (!!!), then enters Scorpio on May 10 (12:58 pm PDT). Mercury is on the Sabian symbol 23 Aries, A woman in pastel colors carrying a heavy and valuable but veiled load. [9:03] Venus sextiles Pluto on May 6 (2:31 pm PDT) at 3°49' Aries-Aquarius. This is the third and final Venus-Pluto sextile aspect in a recent series, including on Feb. 7 and March 21. Look back at those dates to find similarities to what's happening for you now in relationships and money. When the planet of love and money meets Pluto, the Lord of the underworld, deep transformations, financial challenges, and psychological depths are explored. [11:10] Mercury enters Taurus (May 10, 5:15 am PDT). The first degree of Taurus is on the Sabian symbol: A clear mountain stream. Mental processes slow down but focus improves. Communication is more deliberate; speak in a tone that is warm and calm. Tackle problems that require patience and persistence, such as financial planning. Happy May and welcome to a whole new energy! After months of intensity and buildup, we've entered brand-new astrological territory. Timestamps [1:17] Venus enters Aries on April 30 (10:16 am PDT, until June 5); look for connections to Feb.3 and March 27, when Venus previously visited the first degree of Aries. Venus in Aries likes to move fast, might be prone to impulse shopping, and likes the thrill of the romantic chase. [4:21] Venus conjoins Neptune at 1º08' Aries (May 2, 10:07 am PDT). Look for connections to Feb. 1 (Venus direct) and March 27 (Venus Rx), when Venus previously conjoined Neptune, especially related to relationships and finances. [7:27] Moon Report! The First Quarter Moon in Leeeeoo is on May 4 (6:52 am PDT) at 14°21' Leo and Taurus. This is the phase to take action towards those New Moon goals from the April 27 Taurus New Moon. The Moon is on Sabian symbol 15 Leo, A pageant, so celebrate a little bit, throw a party, go dancing! [9:05] This is the First Quarter phase (first action point) in a lunar phase family cycle (LPFC) that began with the New Moon on Aug. 4, 2024, at 12º34' Leo. The Full Moon (awareness point) of this LPFC is on Feb. 1, 2026, and the Last Quarter Moon (final action point) on Nov. 1, 2026. [10:25] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On April 28 (10:18 pm PDT), the Moon in Taurus sextiles Venus in Pisces. It's VOC for 1 hour, 16 minutes, and then enters Gemini (11:34 pm PDT). Make it part of your daily routine to enjoy a little time out, relaxation, and indulgence, especially if you tend to work hard and not take enough time for yourself. [11:32] On April 30 (8:49 pm PDT), the Moon in Gemini squares Saturn in Pisces. It's VOC for 3 hours, 34 minutes, and then enters Cancer on May 1 (12:23 am PDT). Use this VOC Moon period to think about how we can use any recent setbacks, obstacles, or rejections to improve communication, and that means listening as well.  Work hard on developing communication skills that are a little bit sensitive and intuitive, as opposed to just coming from the mind, coming from the heart as well. [12:55] On May 3 (1:02 am PDT), the Moon in Cancer trines Saturn in Pisces. It's VOC for 3 hours, 27 minutes, and then enters Leo (4:29 am PDT). If you are awake, use this VOC period to develop a solid work routine. Because in doing that, your emotions will be more stable, your confidence will get a boost, which will increase the respect you receive from others. [14:14] Pluto stations retrograde (May 4, 8:27 am PDT, until Oct. 13) at 3º49' Aquarius. With Pluto is still being opposed by Mars in Leo, this is not a quiet descent into the underworld, it's more like a fiery plunge. Pluto stations on the Sabian symbol 4 Aquarius, A Hindu healer. Whatever to-do list you have (without freaking out and overly stressing) get as much done as you can. Within this window of the New Moon in Taurus it is massively to the benefit of your resources (time, money, energy, body, mind, and soul) to do so. This week our elemental count shifts. The Fire of it all bumps up to 5, with a whopping 4 in Aries. Tempers could flare or your personal fire could finally blaze and have your heart, energy, and creativity coming back online! Venus is also doing a lot this week, so continue to give her focus on your altar and in your Energy Healings (tapping & shaking). Wednesday, April 30th: -EP 131 on The Magic Spark Uranus is doing something of note this week and the Uranian energy will become more distinct as we move towards August. It's a big energy, it's disruptive, and can be magical. So I'm sharing a piece of content I created for Magical Mentees in the fall session. You're going to want to explore this. And it just might take a couple of listens to prep for the amplification of Uranian energy in August. It's a mini master class. - Last day of New Moon Energy. Continue to lean into the quiet of it all. Rest, replenish, cast a spell because what you plant in a Taurus new moon has got roots to provide for the long haul. It's especially good for career and money magick. - Venus enters Aries. We like her here. We do. She's blunt and quick and ok to burn something down to get to what she really desires. There's no mincing words in this phase. There is clarity and no b.s. It may feel like somehow if you're not used to receiving a fem vibe with clear boundaries and no room for negotiations. Thursday, May 1st: - Uranus Sextile True Node. A sextile in astrology is always considered a benefit. This collective transit offers us lessons that have us breaking up with tradition in any and all ways. Think internalized patriarchy be gone, binaries AWAY! Proper path, boxes, and 'right ways' to do things are banished and simply will no longer work. - Day 1 of Stable Classic - No props needed for this workout. We're brewing magic in our pelvic bowl with sufi rolls, full deep core, corkscrew, reverse plank, side plank...strength and stability training...swan, rolling plank, and puppy. This is a well crafted tiny & mighty series. Friday, May 2nd: - Venus conjunct Neptune. This one is going to call in themes of romantic relationships. Either a rebirth of romanticism, a new love of some kind, or an obsession with the love you don't currently have access to. We simply have to witness how it plays out and work with what roles through...but please remember Venus is not just amorous love, it's finances and general pleasure, and Neptune is dreams and delusions. This could be work or finance related. - Aphrodite's Day. It's time to ask: What does my inner goddess need in order to remember she is sacred, divine, and designed to receive? Take the rest. Eat the chocolate. Put your hand on your heart, breathe deeply, wear red lipstick. Demand attention from yourself. Light yourself on fire today. Saturday, May 3rd: Breathe, meditate, drink water, eat vegetables, get on the mat. Sunday, May 4th: - Pluto stations Retrograde. This little guy was all the topic not so long ago. Pluto finally moved into Aquarius after being in Capricorn 16 years. Pluto will station today and be retrograde through October 13th. This will pull us all in again in terms of cathartic change. Emotionally it might feel like it in its capacity to affect positive change/growth. "What will move me/us into the future? I have no emotional attachment to the solve...but I am deeply attached to solving." - Day 1 of Stable Building Blocks - You'll need a set of yoga blocks (cork preferred) for this workout.
