Karen Corbin, Chief Operating Officer of The Philly POPS, discussed the renowned orchestra's mission and their perfromances that take us from well-known Broadway and patriotic classics, through Jazz, and world music. She describes Philly POPS' concerts as all about having fun and experiencing all kinds of musical genres performed by outstanding musicians and vocalists and well-known guest performers. Led by Music Director and Principal Conductor David Charles Abell and Artistic Director for Jazz Terell Stafford, the Philly POPS are artists in residence at the Kimmel Center and they perform at The Met. Beyond the Big Band and Broadway we've long known, the Philly POPS presents performances that reflect the diversity and interests of the city, exploring non-traditional instruments and composers. She notes that the POPS are there for – and in – the community, from trios at community centers, to performances at the city's most venerable events. POPS in Schools – POPS in Schools@Home during the pandemic – is a supplemental music education program in 15 Philadelphia schools serving 3,000 students. For many students, it's their first introduction to brass and stringed instruments. Each school's program is tailored to that location, including bilingual music education and after-school programs for Spanish heritage students. All-City Jazz is the high school program for ten PSD schools which culminates in the All City Jazz Festival. The Philly POPS Salute Series works with the USO, Philadelphia Police and Fire Department, regional Veterans organizations, community centers and schools for celebrations for our community. Salute performances recognize the service and sacrifice of the military, first responders and others who serve us, with special opportunities including free performances on Memorial Day, July 3 on Independence Mall, July 4 at Philadelphia's Independence Day concert, and opening night of the POPS Christmas concert series in December. Karen wrapped up with a look at the upcoming season that includes their final 50th Anniversary of a Beatles album—Let It Be – beginning March 11, new Star Wars concert in October and their annual holiday celebration with 300 performers, three choirs and a Singing Santa. January brings a Modern Broadway extravaganza and in February it's a legacy Swing show with the music of the three divas of the era—Ella, Billie, and Dinah and conducted by Terell Stafford. That will be followed by a singer-songwriter show featuring the music of James Taylor, Billy Joel and Paul Simon, and a tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim. I hope to be around at 93, but to accomplish what Marilyn Maye has done in her time on earth, you must be an incredibly dedicated human. Listen to her talk about her remarkable career and what she has planned for Provincetown at The Art House this season. "MARK CORTALE & BROADWAY @ THE ART HOUSE are proud to present the legendary MARILYN MAYE with BILLY STRITCH at the piano for 10 shows only. Marilyn Maye is a highly praised singer, actress, director, arranger, educator, Grammy-nominated recording artist and a musical treasure. Her entire life has been committed to the art of song and performance. The award-winning Ms. Maye appeared 76 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, the record for a singer. Perhaps the simplest Marilyn Maye accolade came after one of her show-stopping appearances on The Tonight Show when, turning to his audience of millions, Johnny Carson said, And that, young singers, is the way its done. Marilyn began her professional singing career by winning a 13-week appearance on radio station WIBW, Topeka, Kansas, at age 9. She has been committed her entire life to the art of song and performance. During her eleven-year engagement at the Colony in Kansas City, she was discovered by Steve Allen, who was the first to present her various times to a national television audience. The Steve Allen performances led her to an RCA recording contract. Her RCA recordings consist of seven albums and 34 singles, including the first hit recordings of Cabaret and Step to the Rear. Her album with full orchestra, The Lamp is Low, is considered a classic. Her place in American music history was assured when the Arts Council of the Smithsonian Institution selected one of her recordings, Too Late Now, for the Smithsonian-produced album of the 110 Best American Compositions of the Twentieth Century. Her many symphony concert appearances around the United States include the Florida Symphony, The Philly Pops, The Phoenix Symphony, The Kansas City Symphony, The Omaha Symphony, and in June, 2015, The Pasadena Symphony, Michael Feinstein conducting. Her two appearances with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall for tributes to Stephen Sondheim and Frank Loesser received show-stopping applause and rave reviews." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stephanie7502/support

Prior to the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, TOCA was looking forward to presenting Go Now: The Music of the Moody Blues. Lead by Gordon Marshall, the drummer of the group for over 25 years, this was sure to be one of the highlights of the season. Needless to say, as the current health crisis began to limit travel, the group had to cancel their US tour, leaving us to have to cancel our April performance. However, prior to all this, I had the good fortune of speaking with Gordon for our TOCA Backstage podcast. It turns out the group was just as disappointed as the fans to have to back out of the tour, so they have created an hour long concert on video that they would like to share. To view, just click this YouTube link: https://youtu.be/UIoTPjzrviE ABOUT THE ARTIST: THE MOODY BLUES. They sold in excess of 70 million albums worldwide, were awarded 14 platinum and gold discs, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. But the band has not performed together in concert for the past few years and have no plans to return to touring. Gordon Marshall, the drummer with The Moody Blues for over 25 years, knew that there was a hunger in the market for Moody Blues music. Five years ago, to fill the void, he put together an amazing group of musicians and formed the band GO NOW!, a tribute to the music of The Moody Blues. Mick Wilson, the lead singer of GO NOW!, was the lead singer with 10cc for over 20 years. Mick was also the “singing voice” in the Academy Award-winning movie Bohemian Rhapsody for the actor who portrayed Queen’s drummer. Gordon and Mick are joined on stage by Patrick Duffin, Ryan Farmery and Nick Kendall, and together recreate the magical music we all know, including all the major hits. With 25 years’ experience with The Moody Blues, Gordon has created true-to-the-original arrangements, making every performance truly magical. In an endless sea of rock and pop formats, The Moody Blues distinguished themselves through four decades as that shimmering jewel vindicating rock music as a substantial artistic contribution to Western culture. Since the 60’s, as a part of the historic original British invasion of Supergroups, The Moody Blues lit up the hearts and minds of millions of rock fans with inspiring anthems like “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon” and “I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band),” which express universal themes of love, compassion and peace. The band’s unique style of music consistently finds airplay on radio stations globally and continues to illuminate concert arenas around the world. From being immortalized on The Simpsons to having their music featured in movies, television and in national advertisement campaigns such as VISA, The Moody Blues are embedded in not only music history but in pop culture. They have sold in excess of 70 million albums worldwide and have been awarded an astonishing 14 platinum and gold discs; they were inducted into the Rock & Roll hall of Fame in 2018. But the band has not performed together in concert for the past few years and have no plans to return to touring as The Moody Blues. For the past four years GO NOW! have performed throughout the UK, selling out theatres and making many return appearances. Their first venture into the U.S. in 2019 resulted in 12 out of 12 sold-out performances at venues in Arizona and resulted in a repeat 14-show run in Arizona and California in the spring of 2020. Their April 2021 engagements with the Virginia Symphony, the Omaha Symphony and the Philly Pops have made it possible for more U.S. venues to bring the hauntingly beautiful music of The Moody Blues to Baby Boomer fans who still swoon when they hear those first magical notes of “Nights in White Satin”.

August 22, 2016: I was very lucky to find a few minutes to speak with Capathia Jenkins this week. When not performing on TV and Broadway, she is busy crisscrossing the globe performing on the world's biggest stages with the finest orchestras. Last year I performed in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Jacksonville with Capathia in Classic Soul. She brought the house down in all three cities, every single night of the show. It was a real thrill to hear her sing each night and to perform with her. In this episode we learn about Capathia's early influences including the church and R&B, the significance of a teacher's encouragement, how her aural skills broadened at Temple University, the moment that she felt as though she had finally made it, why live music is always her favorite, and her deep passion for her work with Covenant House. This Brooklyn-born and raised actress most recently starred as ‘Medda' in the hit Disney production of Newsies' on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriet Jackson. An active concert artist, Ms. Jenkins has appeared with orchestras around the world including the Pittsburgh Symphony (with Marvin Hamlisch), National Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, The Philly Pops, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, just to name a few. Her Television credits include 30 Rock, the Practice, Law & Order SVU, the Sopranos, Law & Order and The Wiz Live! When not acting and singing she spends much of her free time supporting the efforts of Covenant House by serving on the board of directors and organizing Sleep Out: Broadway Edition.

An alumnus of Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale, Smith stepped into the position of Music Director in 2004 and has since led the choir on concert tours throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Smith has led the group on local and national television including five consecutive annual appearances on "Good Morning America". One of the most enjoyable things about hosting a show like this is that I have the opportunity to connect with people that I find interesting and that are really exploring different directions in the world of the double bass, and Brent Edmondson is a prime example of a person like this. I’ve been following along with Brent for years as he helped Ranaan Meyer to launch the Next Level Journals and Ranaan Meyer Entertainment. He has created a really interesting role for himself in the world of the double bass, subbing with the Philadelphia Orchestra and playing with other top-tier ensembles, but also administering camps like the Wabass Institute, helping Ira Gold to launch his new Orchestral Bowing Workshop, editing Hal Robinson’s publications, and working in roles like personnel manager and operations director for the Pennsylvania Philharmonic. About Brent: Double bassist Brent Edmondson is an active performer in the Philadelphia area. Brent currently serves as the principal double bassist of the Lancaster Symphony and the Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and is an A-list substitute with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He previously held positions with the Beaumont Symphony, Atlantic Symphony, Mercury Orchestra, and Waltham Philharmonic. During the summer, Brent is the double bass instructor at the New York Summer Music Festival. Brent previously performed with the Endless Mountain Music Festival Orchestra. Recent performances include the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philly Pops, Houston Symphony, and other ensembles throughout the country. Brent received his Masters degree from Boston University with Edwin Barker, principal bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His other teachers include Hal Robinson, principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Eric Larson of the Houston Symphony, Rob Kesselman of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Ranaan Meyer of the trio Time for Three. Brent works in the arts community as Education Director and Music Librarian of the Pennsylvania Philharmonic. He formerly held the position of Operations and Business Manager for Ranaan Meyer Entertainment. He was the Operations Manager of Wabass Institute and Wabass Workshop from 2011 to 2015.
We are featuring Douglas Mapp on today’s episode. He is also extremely active as a performer, serving as principal bassist of the Reading Symphony and Assistant Principal of the Delaware Symphony and he performs regularly with some of the regions premiere ensembles including the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Philly Pops, Harrisburg Symphony, and several other groups in the area. Douglas and I had a great chat about a wide variety of topics, including the realities of making a living as a freelancer, what makes the International Society of Bassists conventions so special, and his company douglasmappmusic, which has for 20 years been providing piano parts written in keys that fit with standard orchestral tuning. Enjoy! About Douglas: Bassist Douglas Mapp is at home in many styles of music ranging from classical to jazz and Broadway to contemporary classical. The list of artists that he has performed, recorded and toured with includes Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Donnie McClurkin, Richard Smallwood, Natalie Cole, Randy Brecker, Sean Jones, Ernie Watts, Lana Del Rey, Earth Wind and Fire, R Kelly, and Jeff Majors. He is the principal bassist of the Reading Symphony and Assistant Principal of the Delaware Symphony. He performs regularly with some of the regions premiere ensembles including the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Philly Pops, Harrisburg Symphony, and has a twenty-year tenure with the Philadelphia based new music ensemble Relâche. He has performed as substitute bassist with the Philadelphia Orchestra both at home and on tour. He has performed as a soloist with many of the groups with which he performs, including his spring 2015 performance of the Bottesin Grand Duo Concertante with the Reading Symphony. His publishing company, Douglas Mapp Music has been helping bassists to solve the age-old dilemma of solo versus orchestra tuning for over twenty years with piano parts written in keys that fit with standard orchestral tuning. He is president-elect of the International Society of Bassists and will chair the 2015 ISB convention at Colorado State University. Mr. Mapp is a graduate of the University of the Arts and Temple University where his primary teachers were Neil Courtney and John Hood.
