2025 WRI Results: Toyota Soars, Honda and GM Improve, Others Decline

This episode is sponsored by Lockton, click here to learn more Watch the full video on YouTube - click hereSeason 6 opens with a deep dive into the 2025 Working Relations Index (WRI)—and the numbers are telling. Toyota, Honda, and GM continue to rise, while Ford and Stellantis slide further down. The gap between the top and bottom OEMs? The largest since 2008.Jan brings together Dave Andrea and Dr. Angela Johnson from Plante Moran, along with returning guest Sig Huber, to explain what's behind the scores and what they mean for supplier relationships in today's automotive world.Toyota didn't just maintain its lead; it widened it. The difference? Consistency, buyer accessibility, and a move to streamline supplier systems into a single platform. Suppliers asked for more visibility, and Toyota delivered.GM, after several senior leadership changes, continues to show steady progress. A renewed focus on transparency, buyer empowerment, and cross-functional alignment is changing how suppliers experience the company. And it's working. On the other hand, Ford's story is death by a thousand cuts. There was no single failure—just a build-up of delays, unclear communications, and internal silos that made it hard for suppliers to get what they needed.Stellantis, still at the bottom, might be in the early stages of a turnaround. Leaders like Marlo Vitous and Antonio Filosa are more visible, engaged, and pushing for change, and suppliers are noticing. One of the biggest takeaways? Empowerment at the buyer level. Toyota's edge comes from enabling people on the ground to make decisions. GM is starting to adopt that mindset. Ford and Stellantis are still catching up. Suppliers want faster answers, stronger advocacy, and relationships built on trust—not red tape. And yes—getting buyers back in the office made a difference, too. Suppliers responded positively to buyers being on-site and re-engaging face-to-face. One team even linked their score improvement directly to getting buyers back in three days a week. They end the episode with a reminder of why the WRI matters. Good supplier relationships lead to better outcomes. In the top 3 OEMs, there's a same-year correlation between WRI scores and financial results. The message to OEMs is that relationships drive performance, and the numbers prove it.Themes discussed in this episode:Understanding the significance of the Automotive OEM-Supplier Working Relations Index (WRI) Study as a tool for assessing industry performance and supplier relationsThe growing gap between top and bottom OEMs in supplier trust, with the widest WRI spread since 2008The influence of leadership changes, such as Vice Presidents of Purchasing, on supplier relations and organizational performanceHow unpredictability and organizational complexity continue to hurt Stellantis' supplier relationsHow Toyota's long-term mindset and consistent buyer behavior keep it on top of supplier rankingsThe importance of trust and collaboration between OEMs and suppliers in navigating future challengesThe direct impact of empowered buyers on supplier trust and decision-making speedThe proven connection between high WRI scores and same-year OEM financial performanceFeatured guest: Dave AndreaWhat he does: Dave Andrea is a principal at

It wasn't long after Laura LaPeer left public accounting to climb the corporate career ladder that she encountered her first delicate challenge as a corporate controller. Just a year into her new role, her employer was acquired, and LaPeer was unexpectedly asked to explain complex working capital issues to the new owners. The head of finance for the acquired firm struggled to present the information clearly, and the new owners were becoming frustrated. LaPeer instinctively stepped in, simplifying the complex details and demonstrating her ability to distill intricate financial data while effectively reading the room. This experience, though it occurred prior to her joining Plante Moran, laid the foundation for her approach to leadership. By the time she was recruited as the controller at Plante Moran, LaPeer had already honed her ability to navigate complex situations and build relationships. The firm's collaborative culture and the promise of a CFO role within a few years aligned perfectly with her leadership ethos. Her early experience not only solidified her decision-making and communication abilities but also prepared her for the strategic demands of Plante Moran's finance function.

Despite these hurdles, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and General Motors have emerged as top performers in the WRI. Toyota, in particular, saw another significant 30-point increase, reflecting their strong culture of continuous improvement and respect for people, known as The Toyota Way.They discuss General Motors, which has shown steady improvement despite leadership changes. Dave credits the company's progress to the consistent focus on supplier relations by successive Vice Presidents of Purchasing. Sig emphasizes that GM's efforts under leaders like Steve Kiefer have embedded supplier relationship management deeply into the company's culture.Jan and Dave then address the decline in Ford's ratings, attributing it to organizational challenges and a more command-and-control purchasing style. Sig warns that Ford's recent UAW negotiations and slower-than-expected EV adoption rates add to their struggles. On a brighter note, Stellantis shows signs of improvement under Marlo Vitous's leadership despite a rocky past with supplier relations. However, Jan questions how much Stellantis's top executives value the WRI.In their closing comments, Dave and Sig reflect on the industry's future and the need for change. It seems there's a constant pull between the DOing side of life – pursuing accomplishments, achieving goals, getting things done… and the BEing side – appreciating the moments, recognizing the beauty in the present, soaking in special opportunities. Most of us tend to lean, usually somewhat strongly, one way or the other. Is it possible to accomplish big things and achieve high level goals… while simultaneously being fully present? And how does the balancing act between the two change throughout the various decades of our lives?Today's guest – Bob Hottman - encompasses that delicate balance. He recently retired – or as he calls it – graduated – from an extensive career as CEO of a national accounting firm, serves on a plethora of company boards, and is active with a range of associations and community organizations. Yes – he's one of “those people,” accomplishing more in a day than most of us do in a month – or two months for that matter. And yet I've seen him in multiple settings and he's legitimately enjoying the moment. Maybe he's just a good actor, but whether he's guiding a high-profile corporate merger or out cycling with friends, he's the same guy. We'll dig into his mindset and approach to life in our discussion. Additionally, many of our listeners are considering life transitions right now, from job changes to retirement. Ridicule, Violent Opposition, Acceptance. The hosts for this show are Jay Fidell and Tom Yamachika. The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote that all truth goes through three stages: 1st it is ridiculed; 2nd it is violently opposed; 3rd it is accepted as self-evident. This is what has been happening in our state government. At the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), the possibility of financial irregularities was pooh-poohed at first; when the CliftonLarsonAllen report came out, OHA management and leadership were out to shoot the messenger; and now that the Plante Moran report corroborated many of the findings, the truth is accepted as self-evident. Now we need to look at the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources. The Auditor's report came out and was dismissed out of hand. Then a House committee ostensibly formed to follow up on the matter came out to attack the Auditor. We are waiting for the third stage now. But does it really impact the bottom line? And what can OEMs do with the information? Dave Andrea, principal at Plante Moran and guardian of the WRI, relies on insight gathered across the industry to help answer these questions. And as someone who spent almost forty years at General Motors, Steven Kiefer, chairman of The Kiefer Foundation, provides an unmatched inside look on the internal processes OEMs use for change. “For the OEMs, [the WRI® is] a fantastic piece of data,” Steve says. It provides an invaluable view of the relationship between automotive OEMs and their supply bases (aka suppliers), which is paramount because if there is any tension, OEMs aren't efficient, which hinders organizational growth. Beyond just looking at the WRI® as useful data to look at how to improve, it's also about proactively using this information within an organization to actually improve by increasing overall organizational effectiveness and leading to more growth. These actions are at the heart of improving supplier relationships. “You can see how much mutual dependency there is between the supplier and the OEM,” Dave says. On this episode of Finding Gravitas, Dave and Steve share how the power of the 2022 WRI® Study directly impacts the change OEMs seek within their organizations, and what this tells us about the future of supply chain leadership in the automotive industry. Themes discussed on this episode:  How the WRI® has become a crucial source of data for organizational change How looking at feedback objectively benefits OEMs in the long term How OEMs can apply the right strategy to action the data in the right way The importance of communications and alignment to enterprise success The future of supply chain leadership in an ever-changing industry How new startups and EV culture are shaking up the industry and what to do about it The importance of humility and vision in leadership and the 21 traits as a toolbox Featured GuestsDave AndreaWhat he does: as Principal at Plante Moran, self-described “accidental analyst” https://www.plantemoran.com/get-to-know/people/a/dave-andrea (Dave Andrea) is a guardian of the https://www.plantemoran.com/explore-our-thinking/insight/2022/06/auto-supplier-and-oem-relationships-insights-from-the-2022-wri-study (WRI®). Ali Mears and I discuss the public accounting internship program at Plante Moran. Plante Moran is a public accounting firm in Ohio, Chicagoland, Michigan and Colorado. 26 offices - 4 international. Plante Moran goes beyond Audit and Tax services, they have management consulting offerings and more. Ali shared that interns are a great source for a pipeline for hiring. They find exposing students to public accounting helps then determine if that is the accounting path they are interested in. Ali looks for students primarily at college career fairs, through their presentations at the colleges and more. Plante Moran works with Ohio CPA to get young students exposed to the accounting field. This is part of their early talent outreach. Ali has a background in college career services which gives her a unique position. Ali also was a teacher so her approach to recruiting is very much "connecting talent to opportunity". She knows what career services life is like and so it helps her communicate with those teams. She encourages students to use career services as well. Plante Moran is looking for students that are open-minded and ready to learn. Students get a lot of learning in a short period of time. It is also important to be able to take feedback and have fun! Across their locations they hire about 300 interns. In the CLE it is around 18-20 interns hired. Interns get to attend a firm conference. All employees get together, in 2020 it will be in Chicago. At the conference they celebrate promotions and those who make partner. There is philanthropy as well and time for seeing the sites in Chicago. Earlier this year, Betsy Rust and Plante Moran released a report with a fairly explosive thesis: Margins for skilled nursing facilities had actually been on the rise between 2016 and 2017. But the senior care advisory firm was quick to point out that the report only considered Medicare reimbursements — with Medicare Advantage and Medicaid strains working to wipe out the Medicare fee-for-service gains. SNN invited Rust to expand on her findings on the latest episode of "Rethink: The Future of Skilled Nursing." In our conversation, Rust offered concrete tips for how providers can navigate the Medicare Advantage world despite a lack of public information on rates, as well as how the ongoing stressors in the SNF marketplace could inspire operators to make strange — but profitable — bedfellows. Listen to this episode of Rethink to learn:  - The metrics Plante Moran evaluates when advising buyers in today's market - How partnering with competitors might bring mutual benefits - The outlook for Medicare Advantage under PDPM - ...And much more!

What have you seen that’s innovative: What’s happening in digital marketing. We have the ability to watch how someone is consuming information and give them more information using those same preferences. Tactical best practices: It’s important to ensure the voice of the client is heard. Avoid jumping to solve the first pain presented. There are pains clients are unwilling to solve. Growth strategy: With tools like LinkedIn you’re able to build a network and communicate messages to that network building credibility in a way we’ve never had access to before. Diva Tech Talk interviewed Danielle DeLonge, Technology Learning Consultant at Plante Moran, the 14th largest accounting/consulting firm in the United States.  For 18 years, Plante Moran has been recognized on FORTUNE magazine’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in America. Describing her career path as a “jungle gym path” vs. a “ladder career path,” Danielle began her technology journey with a breakthrough Michigan-based organization: Automation Alley, where she facilitated an 8-chapter grant-funded statewide network of technology professionals (ConnecTech).   Then she became their Business Accelerator Client Champion, serving as the intermediary between entrepreneurs who wanted “seed” money, and those who funded them.  From there she was the Executive Director of Davenport University’s development of their Lansing campus. After a stint as a Project Manager for Xede, she moved to Plante Moran — first as an IT Consultant, and now in her current role. In this podcast, as the mother of a young daughter, Danielle discussed many things including achievement of life balance; aligning her skills with her community contributions; and the key attributes which contribute to her success:  agility, adaptability, building and fostering a strong network, and a predilection for both “listening and creating.” Danielle recommends a number of books including: LOVE IS THE KILLER APP, THE GIRL’S GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING, REALITY IS BROKEN, and two books which her father gave her:  THE POWER OF NICE and NICE GIRLS DON’T GET THE CORNER OFFICE (all downloadable as part of an Audible 30 Day Trial at www.audibletrial.com/dt2.) Danielle’s top four leadership lessons for other tech women include: Never underestimate the value of clear communication. Learn how to facilitate productive conversations. Know your numbers. The tech field is growing and evolving, and you are always growing and evolving. There is a way for you to carve out a niche in this community, if you persist.
