Boldly go into our most gloriously geektacular (and yes, longest) episode as Javi and Paul embark on an epic exultation of the soaring sacred text that is STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. On June 4, 1982, Nicholas Meyer arguably saved the franchise by redefining it as a space opera mashup of Horatio Hornblower and Run Silent Run Deep, with a virtuosic score by the great James Horner. Instead of making sequel to 1979's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Meyer cunningly chose to forge a follow-up to the 1967 episode “Space Seed,” reuniting Ricardo Montalban with the iconic role of Khan, unleashing his towering performance as the ultimate antagonist. (And stick around until the end for a shocking decision about what our next movie will be!)
You wanna go down, son? You wanna go all the way down? This ain't no Jim Cameron tour, fella, this is mortal combat at 150 feet below! Light up a Lucky and peel your shirt off 'cause it's getting real sweaty down here in 1958's Run Silent, Run Deep. Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster and Don Rickles crammed in a tube! Man... I wish Rickles was the captain. Now, that would have been a film! But no - they wanted Clark and I was like "fine." Stupid studio politics. This week on the OETA Movie Club Podcast we discuss Run Silent, Run Deep (1958). After Japanese forces torpedo his submarine during World War II, commanding officer "Rich" Richardson (Clark Gable) is placed in charge of the USS Nerka. The crew on board the Nerka -- led by Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), who had been passed over for promotion when Richardson was brought in is openly hostile to their new commander, especially when it becomes clear that Richardson's sole obsession is finding and destroying the Japanese ship that sank his old vessel.Support the show

The Salty Nerds take a look at Star Trek TOS - Balance of Terror! This is the episode of the Original Series where the Romulans are introduced into the Star Trek universe and Captain Kirk matches wits with the Romulan commander in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse that is reminiscent of World War 2 submarine battles. William Shatner delivers one of his best performances as James T. Kirk in this episode, and Leonard Nimoy as Spock has to deal with a lot of bigotry against Vulcans. This is one of Alex's and Kadish's favorite Star Trek episodes because it reminds them of their favorite submarine movies like The Hunt For Red October and Run Silent Run Deep. We also get a lot of great Star Trek Lore-Building in this episode as we're introduced to the Neutral Zone and the Romulan War.If you enjoy Star Trek and want access to the FULL retrospective review of our take on Balance Of Terror, be sure to check out our members area where you not only get access to this review, but many other exclusive episodes that cover shows like Foundation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Firefly, Stargate Atlantis, Orphan Black, Eureka, and more! “The Sound of Music” 1965 is a musical and drama film andamong our favorite movies. The creative talent of Director Robert Wise beautifully captures the von Trapp family story. We have reviewed many films directed by Mr. Wise including “The Andromeda Strain” 1971 (Episode 38), “Run Silent Run Deep” 1958 (Episode 117), and “West Side Story” 1961 (Episode 118). His films are excellent. The movie centers around the life of Maria played by Julie Andrews, Captain von Trapp played by Christopher Plummer, and the von Trapp children. The first half of the film showcases the family and the music while the second half presents the horror caused by the annexation of Austria into the Third Reich. In addition to being a marvelous film it received five Academy Awards. Here's the IMDB page for ”The Sound Of Music”Check us out on Patreon at www.patreon.com/classicmoviereviews for even more content and bonus shows.
Based loosely on the 1955 novel of the same name, Run Silent, Run Deep tells the story of a submarine captain who disobeys orders in an attempt to get revenge against a Japanese destroyer that sank his previous command. In this episode, James and Sean share their thoughts about this exciting action film.
It's Burt and Clark...Gable that is-the one and only. This straight forward male soap opera that takes place during WWII on a subamrine full of men, men, men, men, men is riveting and groundbreaking. The nail biting, don't look away "Run Silent, Run Deep" is a clinic in leadership, loyalty, perseverance and patriotism! We salute the U.S Navy and Military! Facebook YouTube
This week, co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto take a look at a film that has some striking similarities with Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Robert Wise directed The Motion Picture and it premiered in 1979. It was his 39th film. But 21 years earlier, Wise directed the World War II submarine drama, Run Silent, Run Deep. This earlier film shares several themes with TMP and after watching it, you'll agree that it must have been an influence for Wise, and possibly even screenwriters Harold Livingston and Gene Roddenberry. Run Silent, Run Deep premiered in 1958 and was the 26th movie Wise directed. It starred Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, with Jack Warden and Don Rickles in supporting roles. Star Trek fans will recognize character actor Ken Lunch in the role of "Frank." He would go on to play Chief Engineer Vandenburg in the Star Trek episode Devil in the Dark in 1967. *** In The Unofficial Trek Podcast, hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto give their "Unofficial" take on the Star Trek universe. From 2019 through 2019, Bob and Kelly hosted the show 70s Trek. It was a look at the events that brought a cancelled, 1960s TV show back from the dead to become a blockbuster movie in 1979. It was a decade that created a multi-million dollar franchise. Now Bob and Kelly will look at the minutia, the concepts, the people and the news pertaining to the Star Trek Universe. It's a fascinating time for Star Trek, with a flood of content about it on the internet. Bob and Kelly will give their "Unofficial" take. Why unofficial? Because their views are just that, they are theirs and are, therefore, "unofficial." It's a fresh look at Star Trek from two lifelong fans who have been talking Trek for over 35 years! We hope you'll join Bob and Kelly for their next venture, The Unofficial Trek Podcast. The IMDB summaries for some movies are funny. Here’s a one liner for “Run Silent Run Deep”: A U.S. sub commander, obsessed with sinking a certain Japanese ship, butts heads with his first officer and crew. Yeah, that about sums it up, except that there are about three more layers of drama going on. There’s the Moby Dick aspect of Commander “Rich” Richardson’s obsession with the Japanese commander that sunk his sub. There’s the angle of the younger commander being usurped by the older returning commander. There’s the tension on board the ship as they sail deeper and deeper into Japanese territory. And then there’s the flat out dramatic war movie action that is brought to vidid life in this film by the excellent use of miniature photography. All helmed by one of our favorite directors Robert Wise. Starring Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, Jack Warden, Brad Dexter and Don Rickles in his first film appearance. So secure the hatches and prepare for diving! We’re headed into the Bungo Strait! Be sure to listen all the way to the end for a clip from an Iron Maiden song called “Run Silent Run Deep” that features themes and lyrics that could be right out of this film. And here’s a link to a YouTube video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DU32myDHbM, with lyrics for Iron Maiden’s “Run Silent Run Deep” if you want to actually be able to understand everything that’s being sung!
