In a world constantly torn by social division amplified by polarizing scissor statements throughout social media, Taiwan conducted a social experiment aimed at strengthening social unity while also embracing diversity. Plurality details how Taiwan's Digital Minister Audrey Tang and her collaborators achieved inclusive, technology-fueled growth that harnessed digital tools to provide an antidote to information chaos and warfare. The open-source book is living proof that present global challenges can be solved through democratic solutions that embody a decentralised ethos. We were joined by Audrey Tang and Glen Weyl, co-authors of Plurality, to discuss the social dynamics they studied and how technology can be used to unite rather than divide.Topics covered in this episode:How Audrey & Glen met and Plurality's genesisAudrey's journey from civic hacker to Taiwan's Digital Affairs MinisterHow democracy is perceived around the worldEstablishing a co-creating mentalityScissor statements and how to avoid divisionHow Polis worksLeveraging Web3 to strengthen democracy & social collaborationDecentralised co-ownershipWeb3 governanceHuman facilitatorsEpisode links:Audrey Tang on TwitterGlen Weyl on TwitterPlurality Book on TwitterPlurality Institute on TwitterRadical xChangeSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. In this podcast, Jason Warnke and Joe Cahill discuss the impact of digital experiences on technology-enabled transformation. Jason Warnke serves as Senior Managing Director for Global Digital Experiences at Accenture. Digital Experiences is located within Accenture's internal IT leadership team and is responsible for driving technology-enabled experience transformation.Jason leads off by sharing examples of how technology in our business lives has not kept pace with what we have experienced in our lives as consumers.  Many companies build their internal capabilities with a “technology first” mindset that can sometimes inhibit workflows, productivity and engagement that drive business performance.Shifting to a focus on employee experience looks at the impact of making it easier for employees to get things done in a digital way.  Jason shares examples related to reducing multiple applications, making the user experience more intuitive, building applications into the flow of work and other tips.  From a project delivery perspective, Jason discusses shifting from a requirements focus on what the employee believes is needed to truly understanding the intended outcomes the employee wants to enable, the service experience they expect, etc..  It is also about prioritizing capabilities so employees get the functionality that is most useful for them.Social networking and creating a “culture of cultures” is another area Jason explores.  In a highly distributed organization, organizations need to recognize that employees can build community in ways that are different from approaches that work in highly centralized environments.  In addition to work networks, organizations can help connect employees via social networks where they already engage, such as clubs for exercise enthusiasts, XBOX players, photographers, etc.  This approaches recognizes that it is as important to build connections around interpersonal engagement, with people outside of the core team and among team members around the globe.Discussing new ways of working, Jason concludes with a focus on how digital transformation is changing project work and creating opportunities for leaner workflows.

Das fragte auch Mashable in dem Artikel: "A World Without E-mail: One Man's Vision of a Social Workplace" (siehe Shownotes).

"We are running from one meeting to another without asking ourselves, how we can make an impact in the long return" – die Zeit für Reflektion benennt die Autorin und Beraterin Isabel de Clercq aus Belgien im Digital You Podcast als einen wichtigen Benefit des transparenten Arbeitens. Shirley Ogolla, Thomas Wagenknecht You probably have already used some Enterprise Social Software today - name it Slack, Yammer or even just a Google Drive. Such tools are meant to facilitate communication and collaboration within enterprises - which is pretty much what the E-Mail had promised in the 1980s. Later we saw chat services and social networks, but no matter how much smarter these technologies get, they are all eventually hitting a sort of sonic barrier: With higher speed, transparency and openness, the white noise becomes louder and louder, too. A new collaborative tool, does not always come with more collaboration in the long term. Instead we notice, that more communication and collaboration implies more cat content, than anything else. And furthermore transparency comes with more control by management all too often, too. The reason for this lies in the particular interdependence of information technologies and power relations within a company. The actual and most important function of an enterprise is to organize knowledge, as many scholars agree. That is precisely why a firm's social structure depends so strongly on its IT, and also why the introduction of a knowledge management system can turn an enterprise's power patterns upside down. For instance, advice may no longer be sought from bosses, but from whomever colleague makes the most savvy and useful posts on the enterprise wiki. If the existing hierarchy - the monkey's rock - fights this change, the entire idea of Social Collaboration is bound to failure. We will talk about what is actually "new" about Enterprise Social Media (and what is not), we will look at the promises of participation and empowerment of the worker precisely and will give users a Survival Kit on how one can survive in the Jungle of bosses that "follow" you, cat content that distracts you and lurking colleagues.

Join the Blab debate on Social Collaboration, with Vanessa Shaw from the Human Side of Tech and Pilar on 23 Sept. Here's the link to the event. https://blab.im/ilbzla Pilar introduces the show and the question: can team members working in the office also feel isolated? Lisette shares how she's been receiving feedback on her book - another truly collaborative process! - and how she's been invited to speak at Agile Vietnam! (We mention the Virtual Coffee with Lisette promo, which you can check out at the beginning of one of the Collaboration Superpowers podcast.) Lisette loves working on her own so she finds this issue puzzling...   Working from home, not alone... Is socialising part of teamwork? Does social chat help make asking for help and feedback easier? http://www.lisettesutherland.com/2014/02/working-from-home-not-alone/   Social chat helps us understand each other and makes communication easier. One-one relationships need to be strong to combat isolation: find a collaboration partner. We mention this article by Sebastian Bailey: How to Beat the Five Killers of Virtual Working. http://www.forbes.com/sites/sebastianbailey/2013/03/05/how-to-overcome-the-five-major-disadvantages-of-virtual-working/ We don't always need video. The importance of having a process that brings you together.   You need a process OR an enthusiastic champion.   Can interdependent tasks prevent isolation? (Pilar mentions her Visibility in Virtual Teams Kindle book.)   There's no innovation if there's no communication.   The team can also become isolated from the business or organisation. Can this be prevented? Working Out Loud. How can we replicate not just the team talk around the water cooler, but also in the lifts, the canteen etc... Team agreement. Who's afraid of the big, new tools? Making sure everyone knows how to use (and is comfortable with) communication technology. Understanding your role in the team's achievements. Tips to combat isolation for those working from home. (Pilar refers quite a bit to this podcast on working from home.) What do we do when people just can't work from home?   Joke of the week: What's another word for Thesaurus?

With increased stress in working environments combined with outside pressures to speed up performance, organizations have to reflect on this question in order to see where they are unintentionally blocking contribution. Anne Murray Allen is currently the Director for the Executive Development Center at Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management. In this role Anne is responsible for developing non-degree certificate programs in business and public management essentials, sustainability, and industry-specific training. Her personal areas of interest and research are in understanding how healthy, performance-based organizations are built and sustained. These ‘social networks of collaboration’ are a key ingredient for organizations and communities to move into the future taking effective action in building a sustainable future. Anne retired from Hewlett-Packard Company in 2005, having served in a variety of management and executive positions over a 16 year period. These included leading company-wide Knowledge and Intranet Management, strategic planning (at the division and at the corporate level), culture integration for the Compaq/HP merger, IT for the Imaging and Printing Group, production management for scanners and Inkjet cartridges. While still at HP, Anne co-authored an article with Dennis Sandow entitled, “The Nature of Social Collaboration” published in Reflections Journal, May 2005. Anne’s social action research initiative while she worked in Hewlett Packard turned up some surprising results on what lies at the roots of phenomenal results and what you must embody as a leader to support their high functioning.
