Can you believe it! Six years ago I started this podcast at the height of COVID on a complete whim. Never thought I'd be doing this for more than a few weeks let alone six freaking years! And what a way to celebrate by bringing back my first-ever guest, Staunton, Va.-based singer-songwriter Scott Miller. Scott cut his teeth in the mid-90s during the burgeoning alt.country or no-depression or insurgent country scene that never truly got off the ground. Signed to country legend Steve Earle's E-Squared Label, Scott's band the V-Roys released two dynamite albums before the band split and Scott started his prolific solo career. In this episode, Scott catches us up on what he's been up to since he last joined awhile ago. We talk about his latest single the ingenious Like a Simile from his forthcoming new record. Scott also touches on a new vinyl-only compilation album and dishes on how he balances his music career with his life on his Shenandoah Valley farm. So sit back and welcome Scott Miller back to For Songs!

The bluegrass revival of the early 2000s has it's roots in music that was bubbling just under the surface years before. In the 90s there were artists laying the groundwork for what would become this musical phenomenon. Gillian Welch, Uncle Tupelo, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and many other artists were forming the sounds of what was to come. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings put out their album Revival in 1996 and it is not only a stalwart record, it also introduced the world to this new sound. A sound that would serve as a template for so many artists to come. So join me as I take a look at this incredible piece of art. I hope you dig it!

PATREON - LISTEN WITHOUT ADS - www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast SUMMARY: This Week on Dopey's Greatest Hits! Dave records from his dad's overheated apartment and opens with a long, chaotic conversation about Dopeywood at The Comedy Store. His dad gives a detailed, meandering recap of the trip, the show, and his mixed reactions to the comedians, praising the turnout but criticizing some of the material as confusing and overly raunchy.   They argue about politics, language on the show, and listener feedback, including a back-and-forth with a fan upset about violent rhetoric. Dave reflects on tone, community, and the balance between humor and responsibility.   The episode includes emails and voicemails about poppy seed tea addiction, with detailed stories about making opioid-like substances from seeds and pods, building tolerance, and the extreme lengths people went to stay well.   The second half features a replay of Dave's interview with Steve Earle. Steve talks about growing up surrounded by recovery, with addiction deeply embedded in his family, including relatives who were part of early AA. He says he avoided recovery at first despite seeing that it worked.   Steve describes getting high for the first time at age 11 and explains that music and addiction developed side by side but weren't directly connected. He talks about learning guitar from his uncle, discovering Dylan and the Beatles, and becoming obsessed with songwriting and storytelling.   He reflects on his career as a musician, the pressure of performing, and how much he depends on audience feedback to feel okay. He also talks about the realities of the music business, losing his band, shifting to solo work, and writing for theater.   Throughout the conversation, Steve is blunt about addiction, family history, and the long-term impact of substance use, while also showing humor, insight, and a deep connection to music as both a craft and a survival tool. ALL THAT AND MUCH MUCH MORE! On an old classic episode with my Dad in it TWICE! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. She's a subversive storyteller, slipping in sideways with hard-to-swallow truths. Growing up in Motown, Alice Randall was drawn to the sounds coming from Music City. The dream was to invade the “citadel” of country music, elevate progressive ideas and highlight the Black roots of a very white genre. She would become the first Black woman to co-write a number one country hit — Trisha Yearwood's “XXX's and OOO's.” She got her number one, made it big as a publisher, then got a little burned. So she assumed new roles. Randall has come to be viewed as a "griot" for the way she preserves and promotes the overlooked history of country music as laid out in her 2024 book "My Black Country." From her early days in Nashville learning the craft from Steve Earle to her evolution into a best-selling author and professor at Vanderbilt, she has her own remarkable stories to tell.This episode was produced by Blake Farmer.

Long recognized as one of the most thrilling and thoughtful guitarists of his generation, Matthew Stevens has built an elite reputation in music, touring, and recording with a "who's who" of modern icons, including Esperanza Spalding, Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, Harvey Mason, and Walter Smith Ill. He has also made a splash outside of jazz, having produced the tribute album I Am A Pilgrim - Doc Watson at 100, featuring artists such as Valerie June, Steve Earle, Nora Brown, and Dolly Parton (Stevens produced Parton's version of "The Last Thing on My Mind," which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Solo Performance in 2024). A culmination of 20 years of craft, the eponymous album serves as a mid-career mission statement with Stevens stepping into the spotlight. Co-produced by Stevens, saxophonist Josh Johnson, and percussionist Eric Doob, the record seamlessly melds acoustic and electric sonics through a mix of genre-blurring originals and deeply personal covers. It features a multigenerational cast of musicians who have had a profound impact on Stevens' journey, including rising visionaries like vibraphonist Joel Ross and vocalists Anna B Savage and Corey King, in addition to his mentor Terri Lyne Carrington and personal guitar hero Jeff Parker. At the album's core is a band of his most trusted collaborators, which also includes keyboardist Chris Fishman and bassist Kyle Miles, with additional contributions from percussionist Paulo Stagnaro and guitarists Dylan Day and Rich Hinman on slide and pedal steel. Matthew Stevens reflects a period of profound personal and artistic change, ultimately bringing him to "a place of optimism, excitement, and confidence" that signals a bold new chapter for one of jazz's most essential voices and respected players. website www.mattstevens.com www.instagram.com/matthewthomaswyatt  Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/7z1PSpsIyAeniOOtaQ1iYa?si=cS9P53EIR46Qs9X4YvAd-g About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. Back in the Tin Pan Alley (and Brill Building) days there were song-pluggers, and there were vocalists, and never the twain met, but this symbiotic relationship formed the successful division of labor for the great American capitalist record business. Whether they be based in NY, LA, or Nashville successful songwriters rarely had hits recording their own material. Hard to believe that it took Willie Nelson so many years to be recognized as his own best interpreter. Of course, that now seems ludicrous, given Willie's status as “national treasure”.  Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and the like had their go-to writers and arrangers, Phil Spector, Don Kirschner and others kept their stable of regular creatives like Carole King and Gerry Goffin in little cubicles laboring to churn out dozens of standards weekly for their employer's contracted recording artists.  But, just like any actor worth his salt in Hollywood will tell you: “without good writing, you ain't got shit”Two of Country Music's most covered songwriters are being honored here today, singing for you in their own voices: Guy Clark, doing “That Old Time Feeling”, and Harlan Howard performing “Heartaches by the Number.” These are craftsmen, whose practical, raw boned approach to their art yielded glittering treasures. HARLAND HOWARD (1927-2002)Harland Howard wrote over 4000 songs, 100 of which made the top ten Country charts. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters and Country Music Halls of Fame. There are tribute albums of his songs by Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings and Wille Nelson. He wrote I Fall to Pieces for Patsy Cline, Busted, made famous by Ray Charles, and the monster hit - I got a Tiger by the Tail for Buck Owens. Here he is singing Heartaches by the Number, which a cursory dip into YouTube reveals covers by Ray Price, Dwight Yoakam, Guy Mitchell, Leon Russell, Paul Carrack and Kitty Wells, among others. There are no frills here, but I contend that hearing the voice of the man who created the song is a more personal experience, like someone reading you their diary.GUY CLARK (1941-2016)The ultimate example of an unsung (pun intended) man of influence is “Old No. 1,” the luthier's luthier, Guy Clark. His Texas home-workshop was the Austin epicenter of the Outlaw Country Movement that transformed Country Music. Watch the scene from the documentary Heartworn HIghway with Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell sitting around Guy's kitchen table, trading songs. Townes Van Zandt may have been the most elusive doomed romantic poet of that group, but it was Guy they studied with and trusted - the one they could depend on, the Zen Master of song.And, what songs! They are like short stories, full of vivid characters, evocative dialogue, and carefully observed detail. Songs like Desperadoes Waiting for a Train, L.A. Freeway, My Favorite Picture of You (for his late wife Susanna - the magnetic beauty patiently putting up with the Outlaw's shenanigans). Today, he favors us with That Old Time Feeling, a tune that insinuates itself into your consciousness through a stream of unforgettable images.

Steve Earle is rock and roll, he is country, and Earle has deep roots in early Americana all the way back to Guy Clarke, Townes Van Zandt, and Rodney Crowell, among many. A songwriter first, I found him with his "Guitar Town" release back in 1986.  Listened to the second album, the Springsteen-esque "Exit 0", a lot, and when 1988's "Copperhead Road" album came out, we turned it up loud. With this episode, I wanted to listen to his older music and talk about artistry, rebellion, and political themes that the three-time Grammy winner has embraced through 20 albums with themes of social justice, addiction recovery, and political, anti-war views. A newly-invited member to the Grand Ole Opery (who would have ever thought that would happen back in 1987), we also listen to some of what is a whole lot of great cover songs. Let's go.

Steve Earle is one of America's greatest living songwriters. His career spans decades, and he is widely respected as an incredible artist by so many musicians. His first album Guitar Town got his career started 40 years ago. It reflects the influence of other great artists like Guy Clark, and Townes Van Zandt who were huge inspirations for him.

In this episode, roots music returns via the altar: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings live at Melbourne's Forum, with guest Andy White joining the chat.  They describe the duo as deities in Australia, playing with disarming minimalism (mics on guitars, SM58s, no fancy DI wizardry), and drawing an audience so quiet it feels like church. Brian's only complaint is the kind you're only allowed after 20-plus gigs: he wanted setlist variations — the tour's Neil Young (“Cortez the Killer”), Springsteen (“Racing in the Street”, “Atlantic City”), maybe a Garcia nod — and didn't get them.  Michael diagnoses him as “gluttonous”, which is fair, though “devout” might be kinder. The conversation widens into stagecraft: tuning mishaps, the art of filling dead air, and the delicate question of whether you should tell stories between songs or let the song do the work.  That segues beautifully into a bigger theme: the thrill (and terror) of the no-setlist life. Bill Frisell becomes the exemplar: dazzling, improvisational, apparently operating without a set list, with Brian recounting a classic partner-at-gig moment — Karen asking if Frisell's strange effects are just him tuning up.  Frisell, told the story, laughs and admits people say that a lot. (This is the highest compliment: “your art is so unfamiliar I assumed it was maintenance.”) From Frisell they leap to Elvis — specifically Baz Luhrmann's concert-footage film EPiC (Elvis Presley in Concert), made from newly uncovered Vegas-era material.  Michael's key point is unexpectedly roots-adjacent: underneath the jumpsuits and spectacle, Elvis is vulnerable.  He's also a kind of bodily conductor, cueing the band with movement rather than baton, with the musicians watching him like hawks for the next dynamic turn. It's showbiz as improvised gospel. And in case you worried the episode might end without another collector's item, Brian flags a song that did land perfectly at the Forum: Gillian & Dave covering Guy Clark's “Desperados Waiting for a Train”, from Old No. 1 (1975), notable also as Steve Earle's first recorded appearance — and now reissued in a special edition.  They wrap by teasing more about the new McCartney documentary, sponsor fantasies (“someone with really deep pockets”), and the ongoing podcast mission statement: tell your friends — and also tell people you don't like. Which, frankly, is the most honest marketing plan in music media. You can catch Andy White live on stage in May at the Merri Creek Tavern. Tad Overbaugh is one of Boston's finest songwriters — criminally under the radar, but not for much longer. Tad crafts a sound that's been beautifully described as "alt-country music viewed from Boston," a gritty, lived-in blend of roots rock, Americana, and dive-bar pop that draws comparisons to The Replacements, Drive-By Truckers, and Steve Earle. It was fellow Boston-based songwriter Tom Baker — a man whose taste we've long admired — who essentially grabbed us by the collar and told us just how good this guy is. And Tad's new record is all the proof you need. Music Clips by The Charms, The Dogmatics, The Zulus, Black Helicopter, and Tad Overbaugh Produced and Hosted by Steev Riccardo

Yesterday, I was listening to a playlist on Spotify. And one of my favorite country songs, that many have forgotten, was on the playlist. It was Steve Earle's ‘I Ain't Ever Satisfied’.  And naturally, it got me to thinking. As Americans, or for that matter, even as humans, is satisfaction possible? I've always viewed myself as a perfectionist. That's both good and bad. One of the bad parts is that even when something goes well, I'm never totally satisfied. I'm always looking for ways to improve, to make it better. Is this just a problem here in America, or is it a human condition worldwide? I don’t know if there’s a definitive answer… Click Here To Subscribe Apple PodcastsSpotifyAmazon MusicGoogle PodcastsTuneIniHeartRadioPandoraDeezerBlubrryBullhornCastBoxCastrofyyd.deGaanaiVooxListen NotesmyTuner RadioOvercastOwlTailPlayer.fmPocketCastsPodbayPodbeanPodcast AddictPodcast IndexPodcast RepublicPodchaserPodfanPodtailRadio PublicRadio.comReason.fmRSSRadioVurblWe.foYandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-69928f5e05ee2').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-69928f5e05ee2.modal.secondline-modal-69928f5e05ee2").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });

Americana is like that perfect roadside diner: you know the vibe when you walk in, even if you can't quite articulate the decor. It has the twang of classic country, the soul of folk music, and a lyrical sincerity that just feels like home, even if "home" means a broken-down Ford pickup on a backroad somewhere. The guys attempt to pin down this elusive sound by spinning a killer playlist that jumps from the legendary Texas troubadour Willis Alan Ramsey to the raw, hard-edged storytelling of Tyler Childers. They also dive into the powerhouse harmonies of The Highwomen, look at a possible evolution of the genre from Halsey, and explore the enduring grit of Steve Earle and the lush, layered folk of Fleet Foxes. But be warned: the conversation takes a hard left turn, veering off the musical highway to tackle the pressing matter of escaped cats and, well, prolapsed anuses.  What a delight talking with Rosy Nolan! We discussed her new album “Main Attraction” AVAILABLE NOW! We also talked about how music hasalways been consistent in her life, her favortie song on the album, and we happened to catch her the night before her move to Nashville!    Los Angeles country artist Rosy Nolan's upcoming LP Main Attraction (out Oct. 17) is steeped in Americana roots, Western swing, honky tonk, and old-time country, paying homage to the great American records of the 1920s–1940s. The album is drenched in heartache and longing—core themes that have defined Nolan's songwriting throughout her career.  Nolan is a California girl through and through. Born and raised in the East Bay—first in San Francisco, then Berkeley and Oakland for middle and high school. “I've lived in California most of my life. It's in me, and it comes through in my music,” she says.Her songs draw richly from the state's varied landscapes, weaving metaphors ofhighways, desert, ocean, and redwoods. Raised by Bay Area activists, with a poet mother and a father who fought injustice, Nolan's upbringing shaped her fierce commitment to advocacy. “Activism remains a constant for me,” she says. “I use my voice to fight for women's rights, have lobbied bills with the ACLU, and recently, I've been protesting the I.C.E. raids in Los Angeles.”  In the early 2000s, New York pulsed with the techno-infused retro synth-pop and cool-kid fury of electroclash. Nolan found herself swept up in this vibrant club scene, but the nonstop partying and drinking eventually took their toll. Hitting rock bottom, she embraced sobriety through atwelve-step program and began focusing inward.Seeking something more organic, Nolan honed her craft as a singer-songwriter, forging a sound rooted in traditional folk. She immersed herself in the records of Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams, as a new wave of alt-country artists helped spark a fresh scene.    Be sure to check Rosy out here:  Website: Rosynolan.com  Bandcamp: Rosy Nolan  Facebook: Rosy Nolan  IG: Rosynolanmusic  Youttube: rosynolan1202

Tom learned, early on, about music's complex and distinct sounds and rhythms as well as the imagery that great storytelling can evoke.  In his mid 20's, Tom moved to the West Coast where he soon found work in the Specialty Lighting industry. Marriage and 2 young children meant putting his musical ambitions on hold, although he continued to write songs almost daily as he traveled the world to seek out the newest innovations in lighting. His career established him as an outstanding businessman, as he built three very successful Specialty Lighting Companies: Osram, Ushio and his own company, BLC International. Through it all, he continued to hear the siren's song as songwriting provided the creative outlet in his life.  Things changed in 2014, when Tom decided to dust off his prodigious arsenal of songs and put them to the test. When he attended recording artist Steve Earle's Songwriters Master Class and Retreat, he knew that he had found his people. From there, he turbo-charged his songs, taking them to a whole new level.  On June 26th 2025 the Album YORICK was released, highlighted by the title track Yorick based on a character from Shakespeare's Hamlet. It also included critically acclaimed singles, The Watcher and On Top Of The Rainbow.Tom performs regularly at music venues throughout Southern California to promote his own brand of Heartland Rock.  Singer/songwriter/recording artist Tom Ciurczak is proof that, once lit, the musical spark never dies – it's just waiting for the right time to blaze its magic.www.tomciurczak.comhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/tom-ciurczak/1523602233https://open.spotify.com/artist/4kSCXkEUWwUq5ykqyEf1Dnhttps://www.instagram.com/tokyotommy58/https://www.youtube.com/@tomciurczak8782Tom Ciurczak Band: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100092202082226Tom Ciurczak: https://www.facebook.com/tom.ciurczakSend us a text

Mike Delevante recently released his debut album, September Days, on Truly Handmade Records, a label founded by Guy Clark LLC's board of directors (including Grammy-winning author, producer, and filmmaker Tamara Saviano, who fell in love with the album at first listen). Not many artists release their first solo record two decades after their debut album but that's the case for Delevante, who spent the 1990s recording and touring as half of trailblazing Americana duo the Delevantes with his older brother Bob. The duo's acclaimed releases on Rounder and Capitol records in that era made a splash — Long About That Time (Rounder) was the first #1 debut album on Gavin's newly created Americana radio chart —and found them touring with like-minded artists including John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Levon Helm and others. So, while it's hardly the first musical endeavor for Delevante, September Days is an important step for a musician who'd never put the spotlight directly on himself, until now. Produced by Joe Pisapia, whose production credits include work with Ben Folds, Guster, k.d. lang and many others, the album's shimmering guitars and instantly memorable melodies recall some of the 90's best guitar pop artists (Matthew Sweet, Freedy Johnston, Ron Sexsmith, The Jayhawks and more).  That decision was a long time coming. The Delevante brothers were New Jersey natives who've made Nashville their home since the ‘90s, along with frequent collaborator and co-producer, Garry Tallent of the E Street Band. Mike had shifted gears, focusing on visual arts. Both he and his brother had studied art in college, with Bob also turning more toward visual projects in the 2000s, but Bob had also made three solo records along the way. It was Tallent who got the brothers back into music. He'd enlisted them to sing on his 2019 solo album More Like Me, then invited them to be part of a live show he was doing in Asbury Park with Southside Johnny and special guest Bruce Springsteen. They had such a blast that “I felt myself getting pulled back into it,” Mike says. The result was 2021's A Thousand Turns. Its instantly appealing melodies and trademark sibling harmonies were a welcome return to form for the duo, whose mix of country and rock flowed naturally from brothers who came of age in New Jersey before moving to Nashville.https://www.instagram.com/michaeldelevante/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/mike.delevante/https://mikedelevante.bandcamp.com/album/september-days"Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/@treymitchellphotography @feeding_the_senses_unsensoredfacebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographyftsunashville@gmail.com

Eleanor Goldfield hosts this week's show. In the first part of the program, cohost Eleanor Goldfield welcomes back to the show US marine veteran Matthew Hoh to talk about the realities vs. the stories of the US military. How much does the oath to defend the Constitution really mean in practice? They look at Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseths recent performance and how this relates to the hierarchy of complicity within the higher ranking military brass. Matt and Eleanor also give some historical context to the use of the US military as a domestic police force, and how Hollywood and the stories we consume as Americans bolster these ideas of a top-down restorative violence, affecting how we think about the idea of the worlds largest military taking over our streets. Next up, author Danny Goldberg joins the show to talk about his most recent book, Liberals with Attitude: The Rodney King Beating and the Fight for the Soul of Los Angeles. Danny discusses how this history can serve us in the present, how building coalitions with those we disagree with is critical work, and how using the media – even legacy media – can support our grassroots goals. —— Matthew Hoh is the Associate Director of the Eisenhower Media Network and an Emeritus Senior Fellow with the Center for International Policy. He is a disabled Marine Corps combat veteran. In 2009, Matt resigned his post with the State Department in Afghanistan in protest over the escalation of that war. Danny Goldberg is the author of six books including the one were here to discuss today: Liberals With Attitude: The Rodney King Beating and the Fight for the Soul of Los Angeles. He was the chair of the ACLU Foundation of Southern California from 1987-1994 during which the events described in this latest book took place. He is a political activist and serves on the boards of Public Citizen, New Jewish Narrative and Brave New Films, and he is currently the president of Gold Village Entertainment having worked in the music business since the early 1970s as a personal manager for Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Bonnie Raitt, the Alman Brothers and Steve Earle, among others, and as president of three major record companies: Atlantic, Warner Bros, and Mercury.   The News That Didn't Make the News. Each week, co-hosts Mickey Huff and Eleanor Goldfield conduct in depth interviews with their guests and offer hard hitting commentary on the key political, social, and economic issues of the day with an emphasis on critical media literacy. Eric Ambel's career got its start in "the first punk band in Wyoming" in the 70s. Imagine trying to launch a music career from Laramie! He eventually becomes the guitarist in the Blackhearts with Joan Jett, but opts not to sign on (the job went to recent guest Ricky Byrd) and goes on to form the Del-Lords with former Dictator guitarist Scott Kempner. They released four albums in the late 80s (two of them produced by Neil Giraldo) before calling it quits. From there Eric focuses more on his solo career, touring with other acts, and production work which has him collaborating with people like Steve Earle, Mojo Nixon, Ellen Foley, Nils Lofgren and a bunch more. "Roscoe" is still at it too and has a story to tell. Enjoy!  Eric Ambel The Hustle Podcast | creating podcasts | Patreon
