Ever feel like you're working harder than ever but still not hitting that next level of success? Like no matter how much you push, something inside keeps holding you back? In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast I chat with my man Itamar Marani — a world-class performance and mindset coach who's helped top entrepreneurs, executives, and high achievers break through the internal barriers that keep them stuck.Itamar's got a fascinating background — from serving in the Israeli Special Forces to working as a federal agent, and now coaching elite performers across the globe. His new book, Elite Performance, dives deep into what it really takes to achieve audacious goals — not by doing more, but by winning the war within. In this conversation, we unpack how to create psychological freedom, build guardrails to protect what matters most, and remove the “performance anchors” that quietly weigh us down. One of the biggest truths Itamar drops in this episode is that clarity creates freedom. When you know exactly what you want not what others expect of you , you can channel your energy toward what truly matters. He also explains how humility plays a powerful role in success. Sometimes, we hold on to toxic relationships, outdated beliefs, or unnecessary responsibilities out of guilt or pride. But real growth happens when we have the courage to let go of what no longer serves us.We also talk about the balance between ambition and peace. So many people dull their drive because they're afraid of the sacrifices success might demand. But Itamar flips that mindset. He shares how putting up the right guardrails boundaries that protect your health, relationships, and well-being that actually gives you the permission to go all in without fear. Think of it like bowling with bumpers — you can give it everything you've got, knowing you won't crash into the gutter.Another key takeaway: performance = skill + pressure management. Most people think they need to work harder, but Itamar reminds us that high performance often comes down to how well you handle internal pressure. If you can learn to modulate that stress — to breathe, recalibrate, and stay composed under fire — you can achieve more with less effort and enjoy the process along the way.If you've ever felt torn between chasing your dreams and staying grounded, this episode is your roadmap. It's about reclaiming your ambition without losing your peace. What does Happy Hustlin mean to you?Sustainable that you get to wake up again, there's obviously challenging days, but you get to say when you're 70 when you're 80, I did things the right way. Many organizations still use outdated hiring methods that turn off top talent and fuel unconscious bias. This leads to bad hires and harms employer reputations. By updating interview processes and using undercover research, companies can reduce bias, improve candidate experiences, and build stronger, more diverse teams that succeed. Nora Burns, a keynote speaker and researcher, went undercover for over 350 interviews across industries to reveal broken hiring practices. Her research shows many companies conduct interviews like it's 1983—asking irrelevant questions, being unprepared, and favoring men even in female-dominated roles. As founder of The Leadership Experts, Nora helps companies redesign hiring and onboarding by focusing on candidates' potential and removing bias. In this episode, Nora shares surprising findings: she was offered jobs she wasn't qualified for due to bias, traditional interview questions waste time, companies accidentally share confidential info during interviews, and candidates decide whether to stay or leave within their first three hours on the job. What you will learn from this episode: Why traditional interview questions like "strengths and weaknesses" are counterproductive and what to ask instead. How unconscious bias affects hiring decisions based on gender, area codes, college names, and even Zoom backgrounds. Simple fixes for interview preparation, confidentiality, and creating bias-free application processes. "Interviews over time have gotten shorter and shorter and shorter, especially for frontline jobs. We're doing those interviews in 20 to 30 minutes. If I'm spending five minutes on what's your greatest strengths, what's your greatest weakness, that's a high percentage of my overall time to get to know this candidate that I've just wasted." – Nora Burns Valuable Free Resource: Connect with Nora on LinkedIn for hiring process insights and visit theleadershipexperts.com for consulting services. Topics Covered: 02:30 - The genesis of undercover research: How Nora realized she hadn't been interviewed in over a decade while designing hiring processes for clients, leading to her decision to go undercover as a candidate 05:15 - Research methodology and ethics: Creating character personas, funding the research independently, and ensuring candidates knew she wasn't a guaranteed hire to maintain ethical boundaries 08:45 - Outdated interview practices: Why organizations are still "hiring like it's 1983" with tired questions that waste time and generate predictable, unhelpful responses from candidates 12:20 - Better questioning strategies: Moving beyond strengths/weaknesses to ask about development priorities and industry knowledge that reveals actual capabilities and cultural fit 16:30 - Interview preparation failures: How hiring managers show up late, unprepared, and treat candidates poorly, damaging the employment relationship from the start 18:45 - Confidentiality breaches: Shocking examples of organizations leaving candidates alone with payroll records, P&L statements, and unlocked laptops during interviews 22:10 - Unconscious bias in callbacks: A-B testing results showing male candidates consistently receive more callbacks, even for traditionally female roles like receptionist 24:45 - Geographic and socioeconomic bias: How area codes, college names, and Zoom setups create unfair advantages and disadvantages for candidates 27:20 - The critical first three hours: Why employees decide to stay or leave within their first three hours on the job and how organizations fail at basic onboarding Key Takeaways: "We need to stop hiring for comfort and start hiring for capacity and for what they actually will bring to the organization. A lot of our old school questions are really built around comfort and, oh, they think just like me." –Nora Burns "People were making the decision as to if they would stay a year within the first three hours of employment. We are shockingly bad at the first three hours." –Nora Burns "Whenever you say my gut tells me, bias is coming in. That's your stories that you've collected over time. There's something about me that reminds you of somebody else that you love." –Nora Burns Ways to Connect with Nora Burns: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/noraburns/ Website: https://theleadershipexperts.com Podcast: "Stories from the Break Room" (available on all podcast platforms) Book: "Stories from the Break Room" (upcoming publication) Ways to Connect with Sarah E. A Note from JamesThis is a crazy story. Martin Suarez holds the record for the longest continuous undercover assignment in FBI history. He went undercover as a cartel drug lord—smuggling billions of dollars' worth of cocaine while posing as “Manny.” At one point, the story even starts with a gun to his head, convinced his cover was blown. The book Inside the Cartel: A True Crime Tale of Espionage, Undercover Operations, and a War Against Billionaire Drug Lords—co-authored with journalist Ian Frisch—captures it all. Martin's voice may be difficult to catch at times because he's been battling ALS, but every word is worth hearing. Ian also joins to help tell the story. This conversation had me on the edge of my seat.Episode DescriptionFormer FBI agent Martin Suarez spent more than a decade living undercover inside Colombian cartels. Known to the underworld as “Manny,” he laundered money, smuggled cocaine, and survived assassination attempts—all while secretly working for the U.S. government. In this episode, James sits down with Suarez and his co-author Ian Frisch to explore how an ordinary Navy veteran became the FBI's ultimate undercover agent, why deception works in high-stakes negotiations, and what lessons from cartel infiltration apply to everyday life. What You'll LearnThe psychological techniques Martin used to maintain his cover for years inside violent cartels. How undercover work creates “alternate realities” to control narratives and shift blame. Why confidence and self-belief are critical in negotiation, business, and personal life. The role of deception and patience in both undercover work and real-world persuasion. How Martin and his family managed the risks and sacrifices of a life lived undercover.Timestamped Chapters[03:00] A gun to the head: the moment Martin thought his cover was blown[07:00] Surviving a cartel hitman[10:00] From Navy to FBI: the start of an undercover career[12:00] Why Martin was the “perfect” undercover agent[14:00] Smuggling versus intelligence gathering: the FBI's strategy[16:00] How to move cartel shipments without breaking cover[18:00] The art of deflecting blame and creating alternate realities[22:00] Cartel power and control in Colombia[23:00] U.S. government ties and the Iran-Contra era[25:00] Using FBI agents as “girlfriends” to gather intelligence[27:00] Facing long-term risks—and the bigger battle with ALS[30:00] Marriage, trust, and sacrifice during undercover life[32:00] Art theft undercover operation in Europe[36:00] Fooling even the CIA with a perfect legend[41:00] How legends are built in the digital age[44:00] Negotiation, seduction, and cartel psychology[45:00] Ian's lessons on confidence and self-convincing[47:00] Applying undercover strategies to everyday life[49:00] The role of greed in cartel decision-making[50:00] Marriage, grounding, and long-term support[51:00] Are cartel leaders truly evil—or just highly educated?Additional Resources
Retired agent Martin Suarez reviews his nearly seven-year undercover role infiltrating from inside the cartels. During Operation Colaboro, using the alias “Manny,” he smuggled millions of dollars' worth of cocaine for the Medellín Cartel, all of which was seized by the FBI after delivery. During Operation Golden Trash, Martin became a high-level money launderer for the North Coast Cartel. When the operation ended and the cartel thought Manny had stolen their money, they sent a hitman to Martin's home to kill him. Martin is the author of Inside The Cartel: How An Undercover FBI Agent Smuggled Cocaine, Laundered Cash, and Dismantled a Colombian Narco-Empire. His co-author, Ian Frisch, also takes part in this interview. The true crime tale recounts Martin's undercover operations, but also how Martin the family man was trying not to lose himself in his undercover roles. Martin served in the FBI for 23 years. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Queen, let's talk about the mindfuck breakup that's been keeping you stuck—the one with Mr. "Perfect on Paper" who left your soul starved despite checking every box society told you mattered. You know the type: well-dressed, well-traveled, well-paid, and wildly unavailable emotionally. This episode is your permission slip to finally name what you've been feeling and stop gaslighting yourself into believing something was wrong with you. It's time to get the closure you didn't get and claim the healing you absolutely deserve. Because when perfection masks a project, high-achieving Black women like you end up performing emotional triage instead of experiencing real partnership—and that ends today. What You'll Learn • Discover why your nervous system was screaming "something's off" even when everyone else thought you hit the jackpot. • Reclaim your reality by learning to identify "high presentation, low intimacy" men who look like prizes but function like emotional projects • Transform the cognitive dissonance that keeps you ruminating by naming the real problem: you weren't dating a high-value man, you were managing an undercover emotional fixer-upper. • Shift from self-blame to self-empowerment. • Notice how societal programming taught you to override your instincts and perform "low maintenance" just to keep the peace. • Repair what got damaged in the process: your trust in yourself, your joy, your hope, and your ability to love without shrinking. This isn't just about one relationship—it's about breaking the cycle of self-abandonment that keeps high-achieving Black women trapped in situations that look good on paper but leave us emotionally starved. When you've been conditioned to prove your worthiness of love, your nervous system starts mistaking anxiety for attraction. Take Action Take my free quiz to discover how your nervous system and survival patterns may be blocking your clarity:

Jurors in Donna Adelson's murder-for-hire trial are getting a front-row seat to some of the most damning evidence yet: her own words caught on FBI wiretaps, and the undercover operation known as the “bump” that rattled her family to the core. In this episode, we break down both. First, the wiretaps. Donna Adelson is heard talking about buying cemetery plots, worrying that her son Charlie is “on trial for his life,” and even discussing non-extradition countries as escape options. At one point, she doesn't hang up after Charlie leaves the line, and the recorder captures her muttering—raw, unguarded, and deeply revealing. Prosecutors say it's not just idle talk; it's proof of a consciousness of guilt. Then comes the “bump.” In a bold undercover move, an FBI agent slipped Donna a note on a public street, pretending to be a former cellmate of hitman Sigfredo Garcia. The message? He knew about the murder plot and wanted $5,000 to keep quiet. From there, the pressure campaign escalated—phone calls, texts, and even contact with the family's dental practice. The aftermath was telling: Charlie Adelson scrambled to buy concert tickets and a limo for Katherine “Katie” Magbanua and Garcia, trying to keep them close and under control. Together, the wiretaps and the bump form a devastating narrative: this wasn't a family blindsided by false accusations, but one already planning escapes and bracing for exposure. Donna Adelson, now 75, stands accused of orchestrating the 2014 murder-for-hire of her former son-in-law, Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. Prosecutors argue she conspired with her son Charlie and others to eliminate Markel so her daughter and grandchildren could live freely in Miami. Charlie Adelson was convicted in 2023 and sentenced to life. Donna was arrested that same year at the Miami airport with a one-way ticket to Vietnam. Her trial in Tallahassee is expected to continue through September 5. Stay tuned as we unpack every detail.
