Today we're diving into the importance of getting your finances in order when going through a divorce, especially when it comes to raising kids in a blended family. One of the biggest challenges of co-parenting in a blended family is managing the financial side of things. It's crucial to have a clear financial plan in place to avoid any unnecessary tension and conflict with your ex-partner. When you have a solid financial foundation, you can focus on what really matters - providing a stable and loving environment for your children. By getting your finances in order, you can avoid constantly asking your ex for money for small weekly expenses. This can put undue pressure on the relationship and create unnecessary stress for both parties. It's important to establish a system for shared expenses and set clear boundaries to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Having a financial plan in place also allows you to prioritize your children's needs and ensure that they are supported financially. By working together with your ex-partner to create a budget and financial plan or parenting plan and you can provide a consistent and secure environment for your children to thrive in. So, take the time to get your finances in order and set yourself up for success in co-parenting in a blended family. By doing so, you can focus on what really matters - creating a happy and healthy environment for your children to grow and thrive. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll see you next time on the podcast! Today I delve into the fascinating world of mind-body connection and explore how our bodies communicate with us. In today's episode, I will discuss the profound importance of listening to your body, which is constantly sending signals and messages. We'll also explore the groundbreaking research of Dr. Candace Pert, who discovered the intricate link between our emotional well-being and physical health. Segment 1: The Body's Silent Language Our bodies have an incredible ability to communicate with us, often in ways we may not immediately recognize. Whether it's a feeling of tension in your shoulders or a churning sensation in your gut, these physical sensations are the body's way of speaking to us. They are signals that convey important information about our physical and emotional well-being. Dr. Candace Pert's Discovery Dr. Candace Pert, a pioneering neuroscientist and pharmacologist, made a groundbreaking discovery that revolutionized our understanding of the mind-body connection. She found that our brains have the ability to send inflammatory signals to different parts of our bodies as a response to emotional distress. Essentially, the brain perceives emotional turmoil as a threat and attempts to "protect" us by creating inflammation. The Brain's Protective Mechanism When the brain sends inflammatory signals to certain areas of the body, it's doing so with the intention of shielding us from emotional distress that it believes we can't handle. This is a survival mechanism deeply ingrained in our biology. It's a way for the brain to distract us from overwhelming emotions by diverting our attention to physical discomfort. The Importance of Listening Listening to your body is not just about identifying physical discomfort; it's about acknowledging the deeper messages it's trying to convey. When we ignore these signals, we risk suppressing our emotions, which can lead to chronic health issues and emotional turmoil. Practical Steps to Tune In Mindfulness Practices: Engage in mindfulness meditation and body-scanning techniques to become more attuned to your body's signals. Journaling: Keep a journal to track physical sensations and emotions. Over time, patterns may emerge, helping you understand your body's language better. Emotional Processing: Allow yourself to feel and express your emotions. When you do, you're less likely to need the brain's protective mechanism of inflammation. Self-Care: Prioritize self-care activities like exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep to support your body's overall health and emotional well-being. Dr. Candace Pert's research reveals the intricate connection between our emotions and physical health. Our bodies are constantly speaking to us, trying to protect us from emotional distress. By listening and responding to these signals, we can embark on a journey of better emotional and physical well-being. Remember, your body is your lifelong companion and guide—listen to it, nurture it, and let it lead you towards a healthier, happier life. In this episode of "Sugar Coated Dreams," I had the pleasure of interviewing Meredith from Sweet Sugar Laine. She's an incredible baker who turned her dreams into reality, and her journey is truly inspiring. Let me take you through our conversation and share some of the highlights. Meredith started off as a quilter, spending her days working with heavy machines and driving them to put beautiful quilts together. However, she found herself yearning for something more. One day, out of the blue, she received a life-changing phone call from an aqua quilting machine manufacturing company. They offered her a position as a national educator, traveling across the US to teach people how to quilt using their machines. It was a dream come true for Meredith, who has always loved teaching and sharing her knowledge with others. But how did quilting lead to cookies, you may wonder? Well, that's where Meredith's story takes an interesting turn. Despite being in the technical world of quilting, she has always had a crafty side. She's passionate about knitting, sewing, and various other crafts that allow her to work with her hands. This love for creativity eventually led her to the world of cookie decorating. One day, feeling a bit bored and in need of something for herself, Meredith decided to explore a new venture. She started making cookies and sharing them with her neighborhood. Little did she know, her delicious treats would create such a buzz that the Homeowners Association asked her to make Christmas cookies for them. The response was overwhelming, and that's when Meredith realized she had a business opportunity on her hands. Sweet Sugar Laine was born. Meredith quickly dove into the world of cookie decorating, refining her skills, and building her business. She expanded beyond her neighborhood, receiving orders from all over, and her cookies became highly sought after. What started as a casual hobby turned into a full-fledged cookie business in no time. During our conversation, Meredith shared her love for teaching and helping others. She enjoys sharing her knowledge through Instagram videos and local classes. But she didn't stop there. She also started Sweet Sugar Laine's cookie cutter shop, where she sells adorable cookie cutters, stencils, and even offers custom silk screen stencils for fellow bakers. Her goal is to make these tools accessible and affordable for others, saving them the expense of buying expensive equipment. One of the highlights of our conversation was Meredith's appearance on the Food Network's Christmas Cookie Challenge. It was a surreal experience for her, going from being a pipeline worker to competing on national television. She shared the excitement and exposure it brought to her business, and it was truly inspiring to hear how far she has come. Throughout our conversation, one thing became clear: Meredith's journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the willingness to try new things. She encourages aspiring bakers and entrepreneurs to embrace their creativity, explore different avenues, and be open to learning and growing along the way. I hope you enjoyed this episode of "Sugar Coated Dreams" with Meredith from Sweet Sugar Laine. Her story is a reminder that dreams can turn into reality when you have the courage to chase them. Artificial intelligence (AI) is such a hot button topic these days. With the rise of tools like ChatGPT, we can now automate certain tasks in minutes that would have taken a lot longer. The question: Is AI a good thing or a bad thing? The answer: Mostly good, but it depends on how it's used. In this episode, Alison asks me all the questions about AI and its impact on our future. As with any tool, there are pros and cons that we have to weigh, but the future looks a bit brighter with AI in our lives. It can free us to do other things we love, it can level the playing field when it comes to information, it can remove human error on a systemic level. The times, they are a-changin', my friends. It's time to get on board with AI. We want to hear from you! If you have feedback on this new series, please let us know. What questions do you have? What are you curious about? Send your thoughts or questions to meredythwillits@gmail.com. What you'll find in this episode: There are real fears around AI, but that seems to happen anytime new technology is introduced into a society, and we have to consider the positives as well The AI landscape is already evolving so quickly and we don't have the guidelines yet to cover the potential downsides AI is a tool that can free us to do other things that are enjoyable, like getting back to nature, and it can remove the human error out of many areas of our lives Meredyth shares that AI is a form of communication with other life forms and energies in the universe How AI can impact politics, information dissemination, farming and food, education, medical care, the environment, and so much more Meredyth examines how the analytical nature of AI will impact the emotional capacity of humans in general Get full show notes, resources, and links on my website! When was the last time you did something that scared you? When was the last time you stretched yourself into discomfort so you could grow and flourish? I'm not saying you need to make yourself miserable, but I've said it before and I'll say it again: you can't become the person you're meant to be without leaning into your fears. In this episode, Alison and I break down how you can use your fears, negative emotions –and maybe even hangovers– to guide you toward your own path. It's time to show up. It's time to do something that scares you. It's time to stop always doing what feels good in the moment instead of doing the thing that will bring you real fulfillment. Because there are consequences to avoiding this growth, and they're worse than the temporary discomfort, friends. We want to hear from you! If you have feedback on this new series, please let us know. What questions do you have? What are you curious about? Send your thoughts or questions to meredythwillits@gmail.com. What you'll find in this episode: Meredyth talks us through what's next for her and her business ventures Breaking down the nuances of “spirituality” (it's so different from religion) How we can choose to disregard our own negative thoughts How Meredyth uses her own fear as an indicator of the direction she should go next Why just showing up and being available is one of the best gifts you can give someone How giving up perfection allows you to show up better and more often Why doing something that scares you and showing up for something that makes you nervous is what's going to help you grow and build confidence in yourself How negative feelings can guide you back to your path What happens when you don't listen to the negative feelings and emotions trying to lead you Get full show notes, resources, and links on my website! In today's episode "Nobody is Coming to Save You; Stop Waiting and Start Healing," Meredyth Willits, a psychic medium, intuitive life coach, and podcast host steps into the virtual recording studio for an AMAZING conversation about attachment styles and how we can stop making excuses and step into our true power through radical responsibility aka recognizing that nobody was put on this planet to do our work for us. We are the only person who is responsible for our growth and healing. Today we covered all kinds of things but here are the highlights: attachment styles: anxious, avoidant, disorganized breaking generational patterns the positives and negatives of social media the benefits of using social media with intention = H U G E normalizing mental health to make care more accessible the real reason we try to save people (hint: it actually has very little to do with them and everything to do with OUR discomfort) the long term effects of people pleasing/self sacrifice owning your diagnosis without over self-identifying going to therapy the first question every clinician should ask a new patient Disney movies and the subliminal messaging/programming you see when you take a closer look This is not one to miss, y'all!! ✨ Hi fam! Welcome to the fifth episode in the Costa Rica Creators Series, featuring my fellow TikTok creators that I met at a life-changing retreat in Costa Rica. There is a lot of misinformation out there in the world on the topic of psychedelics and plant medicine. We were told growing up that if we took them, it would inevitably ruin our lives. However, they actually help us check in with ourselves on a deeper, more impactful level. In this week's episode of Meredyth with a Why, I sat down with my dear friend Alyssa LeBlanc to talk about psychedelics, mental health, Human Design, and the transformative healing she experienced with Ayahuasca. Alyssa struggled with severe depression and experienced suicidal thoughts throughout her life and tried everything to make them go away. She partied, she took medications, psychiatry, therapy, meditation, and so much more but nothing took away the darkness inside of her. She stumbled upon Ayahuasca and within one ceremony, the darkness was gone. Alyssa now feels a lightness and connectedness instead of the darkness of her depression. According to Alyssa, Ayahuasca calls to you when you're ready. For some people, the changes that come from these ceremonies can be felt quickly. After numerous ceremonies, your life will be changed. Instead of checking out of your problems like you do with alcohol, you'll be able to check in with yourself and experience a new level of healing. What's in this episode: What Alyssa went through when she was struggling with her mental health Alyssa's Ayahuasca journey What an Ayahuasca ceremony feels like How plant medicine and psychedelics help you check in and be more present with yourself The world is changing drastically and plant medicine is going to become more prevalent The effects alcohol has on your body How to find an Ayahuasca ceremony What integration is when it comes to ayahuasca ceremonies The importance of monitoring your vibration Why you can't keep yourself small because of comfort How Human Design impacts your life How you can hear more from Alyssa For full show notes, resources, and links, head to: https://www.meredythwillits.com/podcast Are you ready to go deeper? Yes, they joined Facebook groups and watched a lot of YouTube videos, but they generally figured it out step-by-step as they went along.

The best way to experience truly life-changing moments and understand more about yourself and the world is to travel. A beach vacation is one thing. But an adventure in a new country, discovering how other people live, the beauty and excitement that comes with experiencing a completely different culture—that is the kind of travel that is soul-nourishing, that lights you up, that gets you thinking differently. In this episode, I'm sharing my own personal travel experiences and the profound ways that travel changes your life. For Americans, international travel is often posed as “dangerous,” with the media giving fear-based news stories that keep people thinking that the world is full of unrest. The reality is that there is unrest everywhere, including here at home. Don't let fear keep you from connecting with people who live differently than you. Travel is the only way to truly make a connection to other humans in a way that makes us more empathetic and understanding of the human condition. It allows you to experience life to its fullest. What's in this episode: Meredyth's upcoming spiritual retreat in Costa Rica Why she likes to discover when she travels (no boring beach vacations here) Why traveling lights up your soul How traveling profoundly changes the way you look at the world and how people live their lives A story of her travels in India and how experiencing other cultures keeps you humble How Americans are apathetic about poor people in this country and why that needs to change The importance of connecting with a different way of life, of interacting with the planet, of community How Americans—especially the media—are fear-based about traveling to other countries How international travel can open people's eyes to the struggles that exist at home in the US For full show notes, resources, and links, head to: https://www.meredythwillits.com/podcast Are you ready to go deeper? Working with your spouse poses a unique set of challenges. When you throw full-time RVing into the mix, it becomes an even bigger adventure. But as you'll hear on today's episode, there's nothing quite so freeing as hitting the road with the person you love to live untethered by your location or work. In this episode, I'm joined by wives and business partners Jennie and Meredyth Mustafa-Julock for a conversation about living and working together on the road. Jennie and Meredyth are sharing their story of giving up their big-city lifestyle for one of full-time RV travel. Plus, they're sharing their advice for sharing responsibilities and working together in an RV. In this episode: Why Jennie and Meredyth decided to become digital nomads How they adjusted to the RV lifestyle as two women who'd never camped before How the RV lifestyle allowed Jennie and Meredyth to become more minimalist How to do a “test drive” of the nomadic lifestyle to make sure it's a good fit How Jennie and Meredyth prepared for and researched the nomadic lifestyle What you learn from working and living with your partner in a small space Jennie and Meredyth's advice for couples who want to make a similar life change How to separate responsibilities while on the road and find your traveling flow For full show notes, resources, and links go to www.nomadtopia.com/190. On The Writers' Hangout, we talk with Victoria Lucas, an independent producer who has developed scripts for projects starring Antonio Banderas, Scarlett Johansson, Wesley Snipes, and Hilary Swank. Among her favorite projects is the highly acclaimed coming-of-age film, The Island on Bird Street, awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Victoria is also a Judge for the PAGE Awards contest, and her family has worked in Hollywood since the very earliest days of the film industry. We're going to talk with her about her legendary grandmother Bess Meredyth, a screenwriter, actress, and founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
“Today there's about 87,000 wind turbines installed onshore and they are generating, 122,000 megawats of power. So, and as you said, that's about 10 to 12% of the total use in the U.S. …A 1.5 megawat turbine is one of the more common ones in the United States, and that will give you enough energy for about 350 homes in the United States. So then if you take that and scale it up to a 10 megawat, that's going to be about 3000..about 10 times as many homes.” Meredyth Crichton on Electric Ladies Podcast As we move into spring, we also move into hurricane season in many parts of the country, and that means potential loss of power from those hurricanes again. What can we do about that, especially as hurricanes become more frequent and severe as a result of climate change? Listen to Meredyth Crichton of Clemson University's Energy Innovation Unit, and an expert in energy technologies (especially wind power) explain how the grid distributes power and more in this enlightening interview with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. (Electric Ladies was formerly known as Green Connections Radio.) You'll hear: How the electric grid works – and about a grid simulator. How wind turbines work and how much power they really deliver. What developments are in process for storage to help the economy transition to clean power. Plus, insightful career advice. And much more! “I purposely went and tried to build my support structure, which was a group of mostly women that were in a similar area for their career. Now this was while I was working in industry. So I relied very heavily on a group of about five to eight women, where we would talk regularly at least once a month. And we would support each other, whether that meant we would support each other in a meeting to make sure that our voice was heard…. I would have some that were higher than me in the organization, and when a career opportunity comes open, we would purposely think of each other and say, ‘is there someone from this group that I could mention that might be a good fit for this job?'" Being kind vs. being nice. What's the difference, and why does it matter? I like to think of it as being fake vs. being genuine. In today's culture, it's common to value how other people perceive you more than being true to yourself. In this way, “being nice” suppresses your feelings, emotions, fears, and truth. You can be honest and forthcoming, while also being kind. On today's episode, my daughter, Skylar, is joining me, and we're taking a deep dive into how people, white women especially, gaslight themselves for the sake of “being nice” and making someone else comfortable. When you're “nice,” for the sake of not causing drama or not making a scene, you are shutting down parts of yourself to be nice in a situation that doesn't deserve it. There's a sense of empowerment that comes with valuing honesty over appearing agreeable, over “not causing problems.” Don't let a part of you die inside to allow others to treat you poorly. Practice owning your truth and putting it out into the world. You will communicate genuineness and attract it, too. What's in this episode: Why value is most often found in accomplishments and what others think (hello, industrialized nation) Meredyth's personal experiences navigating nice vs. kind How to translate kindness to your kids and others around you How defaulting to “being nice” can put you in potentially dangerous situations The importance of valuing yourself and speaking up for yourself above all else Skylar's experience with switching from nice to kind, and how it affected friendships and relationships How your energy shifts when you do things because you are being true to yourself How to confront someone with kindness (you can be honest without being aggressive) Why we have to break through programming that stems from a patriarchal society For full show notes, resources, and links, head to: https://www.meredythwillits.com/podcast Are you ready to go deeper? I'm back to solo episodes (for now), and today we're talking about confrontation. We're not born afraid of confrontation, but certainly many of us shy away from it. I've spent some time thinking about why this is and reprogramming my own thoughts and behaviors away from this mentality. And I want to share it all with you. In this episode, I'm talking about how avoiding confrontation was instilled in me as a child, and how I learned to be quiet or to expect punishment for speaking up. This led to me being an adult in my 20s, 30s, and 40s, who didn't speak up for myself. Now, here I am at 49, and I have opinions and beliefs and complaints and concerns, and I speak them aloud. I stand up for myself. I no longer conform to what other people or society think that I should do. That mentality got me nowhere. When I stopped caring about what other people think and when I stopped acting like everyone else, I became the truest version of myself. I learned that confrontation is actually ensuring that my voice is heard. That what I believe and think and feel matters. I learned how to be me, unapologetically. And you can, too. What's in this episode: Meredyth's personal history with confrontation (or lack thereof) from a young age How to pay attention to where and when an avoidance of confrontation began, and how to reprogram your thoughts and actions Why it's important to empower our children to have opinions and speak up for themselves How avoiding confrontation is actually a form of gaslighting yourself Giving your permission to acknowledge your feelings, even if they're negative, and voice them Why putting off a difficult conversation or interaction only makes it worse Embracing your uniqueness and differences of opinion How conformity keeps people compliant (make a point to actively challenge the system, instead) How the practice of emotional release helps with overcoming trauma For full show notes, resources, and links, head to: https://www.meredythwillits.com/podcast Are you ready to go deeper? In this episode of WGT, we take a deep dive into the soul. The spirit. Your essential being. Whatever you call it, most religious traditions have a belief that part of our existence, i.e. our souls, has the power to live beyond our corporeal passing. In other words, many people believe in life after death, at least in some form. But how can we know if this is true? And what exactly does our soul do when our bodies pass? This week I'm interviewing intuit and past life regressionist, Meredyth Willits, host of the podcast Meredyth With a Why. In this episode we cover: + The existence of spirit and how to access our own deep intuitive power + Meredyth's scientific reason we all have souls + Forgiveness and why it's difficult, but important + The lessons we are put on earth to learn + The role of those people in our lives who trigger us, and how to grow past the pain they may bring us + Listening to your intuition + Dreams of passed over loved ones, and how to know if it's a true visitation from them + Transcending your belief system from 3D to 5D + Are the spirits of our loved ones always around us? ...and SO much more! This week, we sat down with Meredyth McCauley from BELAY, our new partner in the Virtual Assistant world! We love BELAY for their work-life balance that they empower their contractors to have. BELAY celebrates moms and and has empowered so many moms to work from home as a Virtual Assistant. BELAY is an incredible Virtual Assistant agency that empowers the remote workforce, as well as the assistants that work at BELAY. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, but their team is spread out across 48 states in the U.S. because in not-so-shocking news, the workforce has changed a lot since the Industrial Revolution. We loved chatting with Meredyth to get to know BELAY more and to chat about how amazing mothers are in the Virtual Assistant role. To learn more about BELAY, check them out here.

She has fantasies of hot candle wax and voyeurism and MMFs (34 Cis F, born in India / raised in Utah w family of 20 adopted kids, former Mormon). Includes a bonus caboose interview with Meredyth Hunt (@meredyth.hunt) who talks embodied anxiety and what we can do about it, using the lens of hand analysis and Wyoh and her tuba-flute mark as an example.
Meredyth Hunt came to L.A. twelve years ago to pursue an acting career. She has hosted a nationally syndicated talk show as well as guest starring on television shows ranging from the soap opera "Passions" to "Crossing Jordan". While on the path of being an actress she started searching for work that might bring a bit more meaning into her life. Hand Analysis was the answer. The scientific and linear style of Hand Analysis appealed to her analytical mind. After becoming certified through the International Institute of Hand Analysis she has read hundreds of hands, giving people a profound understanding of their strengths and challenges and transformational tools to guide them on their path. Meredyth also teaches classes on how to decode this powerful information as well as speaking to groups and leading seminars based on the tenets of Hand Analysis. Subscribe to Modern Marketing Engine on your app of choice. Growth marketing is what drives pipeline and increases sales in the long run. The correlation is undisputed. During a time of social and financial disruption like the current COVID-19 pandemic, growth marketing can be perceived by some as insensitive and opportunistic. What is the modern marketer’s best response? I’m happy to have Meredyth Jensen as my guest on this episode of the Modern Marketing Engine podcast. She serves as Senior Vice President, Corporate Marketing & Brand Communications at RGP. During our conversation, I learned that RGP is a spinoff from Deloitte in 1996 and has become a global company that has served more than 80 of the Fortune 100 companies with services spanning financial, legal, HR, IT and supply chain. Meredyth’s perspective is simple yet powerful: Marketing that is human is marketing that works, no matter the social or economic climate. Join us for this intriguing conversation where Meredyth outlines her personal approach to her own marketing career, why RGP has not missed a beat in its marketing efforts despite COVID-19, and so you can benefit from her advice on ways you might want to adjust your marketing approach to reach your ideal customers. We Marketers Still Need To Do Our Job During Social And Economic Crisis Every season in the life of a business has its unique challenges, but right now (H1 of 2020) companies worldwide are facing unprecedented obstacles. COVID-19 has changed the story when it comes to the needs of the consumer or business we’re marketing to. Many things that used to be pertinent talking points have become irrelevant — or at least no longer appropriate to be part of the marketing conversation. In this environment, marketing teams still have to do their job, albeit with more compassion than ever. Meredyth acknowledges that although this is true, it doesn’t change the approach of brands who have been doing marketing with an authentic emphasis on people all along. Meredyth approaches marketing from a “human” perspective, meaning she leads her team to craft both her marketing approach and messages to the person on the other end of the conversation. She wants to provide true care FOR that person, whatever form it might take. That's a big reason why her transition into her current role at RGP is such a perfect fit. Hear more about when you listen to this episode. RGP’s moniker is "The Power of Human." This is a mindset that most marketers would say they want in their approach but one that's not always practiced. Listen to this podcast episode to hear Meredyth explain the RGP mindset to get inspired in your own growth marketing strategy. How Can A Company Be Truly Human? It may sound like hyperbole to say that RGP, a business that serves over 80 of the Fortune 100 companies is a “human” company, but it’s legit. Meredyth explains that she hears it from their customers. One of the most common sentiments expressed by their customers goes something like this, “You don’t just work for us, you work with us.” To Meredyth, that’s proof that the RGP team has “the power of human” in their DNA. The vision is more than a slogan at RGP. Human is how they do business. The people on the other end of their marketing are what matter. The assumption that when the customer is cared for in a human way, loyalty and profitability are natural outcomes, has proved to be true since their founding in 1996. Marketing practitioners have much to learn from such a great example. Listen to learn more about how to orient your growth marketing around a human approach. Growth Marketing Cares For The People On The Other End At the outset of this episode you’ll hear Meredyth say the following… “I don’t even want to say we’re marketing to people right now. We’re helping people. How can we be helpful and be a resource and be useful?” Her comment is at the heart of what it means to be human as a company. It’s a practice of care and concern for the people behind any possible sales conversation. COVID-19 is a stark example of how the circumstances that happen in life impact both the needs of companies as well as the needs of the people within those businesses. Think it through for your situation — as those you seek to do business with work through the situations caused by this pandemic. Consider how you can be a resource to them in ways that are helpful and of value? That type of care and concern for the people your business serves builds a level of trust that may not yield immediate business results but may open the door to a relationship that can serve both you and them in the future. This mindset is well suited for a virtual sales team as well as they engage in their selling activities with customers whether it’s an existing customer or a new customer. Join us for this conversation to learn more about how growth marketing can be human. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/who-019-locals-producing-new-rockaway-series/ Local filmmaker Garrett Bennett, the creative force behind three award-winning features for the big screen, is turning his talents to the small screen with the announcement of his newest project: ROCKAWAY, a half-hour dramatic series to be set and shot on and around Bainbridge Island. ROCKAWAY will star island native Meredyth Yund, whose acting credits include Bennett’s A Relative Thing and George Clooney’s Unscripted on HBO, and local actor Ted Dowling, best known for his recent performances in HAIR and THE KENTUCKY CYCLE. In this podcast, Bennett, Yund and Dowling talk with BCB host Diane Walker about their connections to Bainbridge Island, their plans for the Rockaway project, and the IndieGogo fundraising campaign they've launched to generate the $80,000 they’ll need to film a pilot episode. The series, which will be shot on Bainbridge Island, tells the story of Jack Bonebright Winter (Dowling), a burned-out theater director who retreats to the island to restore his inheritance: an abandoned house. But a mystery in town, possibly connected to disturbing paranormal occurrences inside the old structure, unsettles his forced idyll. And hiring a “volatile, inappropriate,” blacksheep trust-fund princess named Maybelle (Yund) does even less to keep his life on an even keel. Cast members for the series will also include Cynthia Geary of Northern Exposure fame and Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated actor Eric Roberts. The creative team for ROCKAWAY includes art director Brian Felty, who served in the same function for the recent Johnny Depp film Black Mass; island native Mallory Yund, an associate producer and postproduction supervisor with a wealth of experience on HBO productions, ; and Franklyn Gottbetter, unit production manager on Scrubs, Episodes and The Mindy Project. To learn more about ROCKAWAY, go to the series’ website (http://www.rockawayseries.com) and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RockawaySeries?ref=hl). Talks & Readings Thursday, October 1, 7pm Artists Space Books & Talks 55 Walker Street Ariana Reines will open the evening with a reading of “Littoral Madness”, a section from Chris Kraus’ forthcoming critical biography of Kathy Acker, and will complete the evening with readings of her poetry. In between two talks will be delivered by Melissa Gordon and Meredyth Sparks on the value of presence in art in relation to gender, history and genius. Melissa Gordon will discuss her research into female artists who have “dropped out” of the art world, framing their actions within the wider context of feminist art’s expansion / rejection of authorship, and attempting to debunk the assumptions of failure surrounding the gesture of being absent. Touching on the fallible notion of ‘the original’ and the problematic gesture of “aggregating” as recently written about by David Joselit, Gordon will consider recent court cases around authorship in order to question where the boundaries of an artist persona / authorship are mapped in the contemporary playing field. She will discuss Cady Noland’s essay “Towards a Metalanguage of Evil”, published in the Documenta IX catalogue in 1992, as a key to understanding the “game” in which presence and absence operate. Meredyth Sparks will address the structural problems that arise in attempting to integrate “recovered” or “overlooked” artists into an art historical canon, as well as the complexities surrounding authorship as it relates to gender. Sparks will focus on two artists, the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven and Eileen Gray, both of whom made significant contributions to modern art, poetry and architecture, respectively, but who have only recently begun to be recognized within primary historical narratives. The Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven (1874 – 1927) was a German-born poet, sculptor and proto-performance artist whose influence on and shaping of Dada have been, until recently, marginalized and misunderstood. New research by the Baroness’s biographer, Irene Gammel, among others, uncovers evidence to suggest that Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (1917), arguably the most significant artwork of the 20th century, was perhaps a work by the Baroness. Eileen Gray (1878- 1976) was an Irish-born designer and architect whose house, E. 1027 (1926-29), had for many years been attributed to Le Corbusier. This misattribution stems, in large part, to an (in)famous act of “claiming” on Le Corbusier’s part, a physical and conceptual appropriation that has only recently begun to be reconsidered by historians. With this discussion, Sparks hopes to examine how these artists’ contributions have, in the best case scenario, been misattributed or, in the worse case, intentionally claimed. Re-visiting these placards might open a new art historical or studio-based space for production where, instead of merely correcting or righting a dominant narrative, we might conceive of art and history as an accumulation (rather than a singular realization or articulation) of ideas and methods. For more information click here artistsspace.org/programs/presence-and-absence This public event was part of We (Not I), a four-day program of discursive meetings, presentations, and events bringing together a wide range of female artists, writers, curators and thinkers identifying with feminist practices to exchange and produce content addressing questions around the role of "we" in contemporary art practice, held at Artists Space between September 30 and October 3, 2015. For more information click here artistsspace.org/programs/we-not-i By request of the author, Ariana Reines' reading of Chris Kraus' chapter "Littoral Madness" has been removed from this recording.
