As part of the non-sponsored sporadic "B-sides" series*, Ben and Ben sit down to talk with Micha Birklbauer, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. This episode was recorded live at the EuBIC-MS 2024 Winter School in Winterberg, Germany, as part of a Science Communication Workshop.
Thinking back on it today, X Games champion Alex Schlopy still shakes his head. A homegrown product of Park City, Utah, in a month-long span in 2011 he won an X Games title in Aspen, became a world champion on his home hill at Park City Mountain and soared to Dew Tour gold in Snowbasin. In a roller coaster decade that saw the highest of highs and lowest of lows, today Schlopy is the happiest he's ever been – an athlete ambassador for Ski Utah and looking forward to his first runs off Jupiter in the season ahead.Schlopy was born to athletic parents. His mother, Holly Flanders, was a U.S. Ski Team downhill star. His father, Todd Schlopy, played in the National Football League. His uncle, Erik Schlopy, was a Hall of Fame U.S. Alpine Ski Team star.In the mid to late ‘00s, Utah was the epicenter of the burgeoning new sport of freeskiing. Schlopy caught the buzz from his buddy Joss Christensen. They idolized stars like Tanner Hall and Simon Dumont. At just 17, Schlopy went to the Dumont Cup in Maine, outlasting over 100 amateurs just like him who wanted a shot into the event. He got it, launching a switch right double cork 1440, and soon found himself on the podium with his buddy Joss and future legend Tom Wallisch. The next season he cranked out win after win and found himself on top of the world in a new sport that was to make its Olympic debut in 2014. Then it all came crashing down. This interview is deep and emotional, coming full circle to the joy of skiing. Here's a teaser:You're still having fun skiing?Oh, yeah. More fun than ever.Going back to your youth, what role did gymnastics play in your skiing success?Gymnastics has helped me throughout my whole entire life. And I think for any kid out there, having a baseline in gymnastics is huge. Just knowing how to use your body, learning how to flip and do all those things safely. What triggered your interest in freeskiing? When I transitioned into middle school, I met Joss Christensen and we started hanging out just as friends. He started showing me all these freeski movies with, you know, Tanner Hall, Jon Olsson, Simon Dumont. And I was like, what is this? I saw ski racing. I've seen moguls and aerials and I loved all that stuff, but this was the one that really clicked. It was artistic expression on skis. And I thought that was really cool. What role does Park City, Utah play in winter sport?I mean, this is the Mecca for that in my eyes. There's just so many kids out here learning how to do whatever winter sport they want and then having the facilities and the programs to push it as far as they want. And it's just a beautiful community. After the stunning 2011 season, what path did your career take? After winning those three events, X Games, World Championships, Dew Tour and then kind of stepping into that pro realm, big contracts started to come up and I kind of lost my drive to win. And I think that was my biggest problem. I hadn't really built the best work ethic. I had used a lot of natural talent my whole life, you know, and having overcome some of those injuries that really helped out. I didn't have to work as hard to get back, but it came to bite me after I did win, because I started to coast and I started partaking more in the party side of the sport. I was still doing okay. You know, I was able to stay top five, top ten, but I wasn't winning. And what it took for me to refocus was the announcement that the sport that we were getting into the Olympics for Sochi and I had a lot of ground to make up.In 2014, you missed that last spot on the Olympic team to your buddy Joss Christensen, who went on to win gold. It was a really beautiful yet bittersweet experience because Joss is one of the best people I've ever met in my life. He's incredible. I thought he was the best skier. He just couldn't put it down when it counted until that point. And he went and did it. So it was really cool. But behind the scenes, I was starting to struggle after that and watching him in the Olympics and my friends – it was like all that work I had just put in and I'd really changed my life quite a bit to make that happen and get that close. It shut off pretty quick and I started falling. You're a few years past rehab and drug court. How did it help you get your life back? It's life changing. They always say, you know, addiction is like a broken brain and that means a broken person. So, how do you rebuild that? I mean, it's like your best chance because you can't rebuild everything in a short period of time. So there's something really beautiful about the recovery process. What's the sickest ski run that you've ever taken in Utah? Tiger Tail at Snowbird – lapping that last winter. It was endless smiles and joy. There's plenty more from Ski Utah athlete ambassador Alex Schlopy! Buckle up for this episode of Last Chair as he takes us through the highs and lows of his career, finding sobriety and the sheer joy he feels today when he's up on the mountain all for himself.

Un modo per rilanciare l'attenzione su questi studi e invogliare le nuove generazioni a dedicarcisi. The assassination of Trotsky in August 1940 dealt a devastating blow to the young and untested forces of the Fourth International. Unfortunately, the leaders of the Fourth were not up to the level of the tasks posed by history. Deprived of Trotsky's leadership they made a series of fundamental mistakes. Only the leadership of the RCP in Britain was able to readjust to the new situation on a world scale after 1945. This was the result of the theoretical capabilities of Ted Grant. His writings on economics, war, the colonial revolution, and particularly Stalinism, were, and still remain, classics of modern Marxism. In this talk from the 2023 Montreal Marxist Winter School, In Defence of Marxism editor Fred Weston discusses the Ted Grant and the Fourth International
In the 1950s the Indonesian economy was failing, with the division between rich and poor increasing sharply. At the same time the PKI, the Communist Party of Indonesia, grew to the third largest Communist Party in the world, with three million paid members and the support of ten million trade unionists and organized peasants. Sadly this explosive combination ended in the massacre of 1 million communists in 1965. Indonesia is a graphic example of how mistakes in theory have dire consequences. In this talk from the 2023 Montreal Marxist Winter School, IMT activist Ted Sprague discusses the lessons of the Indonesian Revolution.
The question of how the US working class will create a party of its own—a class-independent, mass socialist party—has been a foremost concern of Marxists since the earliest beginnings of the movement, both in the US and around the world. Reactionaries have long pointed to the lack of a working-class party as an indication of “American exceptionalism” and the weakness of the class struggle in the land of McCarthy. Meanwhile, revolutionaries have tirelessly maintained that a mass workers' party is an objective historical step that must be achieved in order for the US working class to fight back effectively and reverse decades of lost ground in the class struggle. In this talk from the 2023 Montreal Marxist Winter School, Tom Trottier, editor of Socialist Revolution, discusses the struggle for a workers' party in the USA.
The history of Bolshevism has many vital lessons for today's revolutionaries – particularly regarding the origins of the revolutionary party that led the masses to victory in Russia. At the second congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1903, the famous split between the majority (Bolsheviks) and minority (Mensheviks) took place. Many myths and distortion surround this split. It is often wrongly alleged the Mensheviks stood for a ‘democratic' and ‘decentralized' party, in opposition to Lenin's ‘ultra-centralist' and ‘authoritarian' tendencies. In reality, this split on organizational questions was an anticipation of future political differences, which will lead the Mensheviks to betray the revolution. This talk was given by Fightback editor Alex Grant at the 2023 Montreal Marxist Winter School.

More and more workers are saying "the rent is too damn high!" Canada especially has some of the highest housing costs on the planet. Many are finding themselves spending over 30% or even 50% of their income in rent, and homelessness is increasing. Why is this so? In this episode Fightback editor Alex Grant will give an overview of the Marxist theory of rent to explain why landlords are parasites and how they extract an unproductive tribute from the surplus labour of the working class.
The debate over “Critical Race Theory” has come to dominate mainstream media headlines in the United States. It is provoking a frenzy among Republicans, and is sparking furious confrontations at school board meetings, daily segments on cable news programming, and a torrent of legislation to limit what teachers can and cannot say in the classroom. Some on the left may be tempted to counter the Republican offensive by coming to the defense of CRT, or accepting its characterization as the innocuous study of systemic racism. But Marxism is above all a science, and demands a rigorous approach when it comes to questions of theory—not merely an attitude of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” So what does CRT represent for Marxists? In this talk, Antonio Balmer, member of the editorial board of Socialist Revolution, discusses Critical Race Theory

Philosophy is crucial for political struggle, because philosophy is our method of understanding the world. In this presentation from the Montreal Marxist Winter School 2022, marxist.com editor, Hamid Alizadeh defends Marxism against fashionable postmodern philosophy. He shows how the philosophical approach of denying the objectivity of the world, which is increasingly popular among scholars in both the natural and social sciences, is tantamount to denying the possibility of understanding the world and thus transforming it. The ultimate effect of this worldview is to defend the status quo.

As a defining feature of Canadian capitalism, the oppression of Indigenous peoples is of prime importance for Marxists. In this talk from the Montreal Marxist Winter School 2022, Laine Sheldon-Houle, an activist with Fightback in Alberta and a member of the Swan River First Nation, explains how Marxism, which advocates a united class struggle, is the best tool to help fight for Indigenous liberation.
The pandemic has exposed the system that puts profits before needs. Capitalism is going through the deepest crisis in its history. It is an economic, social and political crisis, which is now expressing itself in political turmoil and growing class struggle across the globe. While the ruling class attempts to bury Marxism, it has in fact never been so relevant as it is today. We need revolutionary ideas that will enable us to overthrow this rotten system. Fred Weston, editor of In Defence of Marxism (www.marxist.com), gives this keynote presentation.

Expanding our world, pushing boundaries, indulging our curiosity - Katie Winter's passion and personal mission. And to that, Katie's flagship program, The Museum of Education Foundations, takes a holistic look at schooling, exploring it in ways that combine history, philosophy and art. It does so through the Winter School, a one-room schoolhouse in Lecompton, Kansas that has been in Katie's family since it was built in 1870. We cover a lot of ground in this fascinating and important conversation.
Haverhill Public School students soon begin winter break, and one organization is already thinking about enriching activities children can undertake then.Haverhill Promise, the grade level reading program, wants books involved. Program Director Jenny Arndt, a recent guest on WHAV's morning program, said she's hoping students from pre-kindergarten through third grade will continue reading during the time off.“Hopefully, children are going to be getting books for gifts. There might even be some great deals on books. You also have some great options, the library is going to be having some hours during that winter break and, of course, Ruth's House and other places that have low cost books. We are hoping that there will be lots of access to books and that families will just sit together and read,” she said.Arndt said they are just encouraging children and their families to read 20 minutes a day during the 10-day break.“More importantly, I think, than the academic piece of reading the words is that bonding time with a family member, or older sibling or a family sitting together and reading ‘The Night Before Christmas.' That helps solidify a joy of reading in our kids. That almost always starts at home and so we are really encouraging families to spend time reading during their school vacation,” she said.Arndt also says Haverhill Promise is planning programs for 2022 and seeks volunteers to help with the STEAM Literacy Program. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. Earlier this year, Haverhill Promise received a grant from Edwards Vacuum, a manufacturer that recently built a new center in Haverhill, that will be used to create literacy kits that include a book and a project. The organization is also looking to create in-person programming. There is more information about Haverhill Promise on the web at HaverhillPromise.com.Support Local News by becoming a member at WHAV.net.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

The pandemic has unleashed a deep economic crisis and the capitalist system has been shaken to its foundations. Capitalist governments acted quickly to keep the economy afloat by injecting huge sums of money into it. In this context, ideas that had been relatively marginal until now suddenly entered mainstream discourse, such as "modern monetary theory", and universal basic income. Have these ideas succeeded in overcoming the contradictions of capitalism? what is the Marxist approach to economic crises? In this talk, Benoît Tanguay, editor of La Riposte socialiste, addresses why reformism cannot solve the crisis.

The objective conditions for socialism have existed for a very long time. So why have we not yet achieved socialism? Many people on the left will say that the fault lies with the workers. That they are too "weak" or do not have enough class consciousness. But if we look at the history of the last 100 years, we see that Time and again, the working class rises up to change society. The missing factor is a revolutionary party armed with the ideas to lead it to victory. In this episode, Julien Arseneau, editor of La Riposte Socialiste, discusses the class, the party and the leadership: how to organize revolution.
On September 11, 1973, a bloody US-backed coup overthrew the government of Chilean socialist Salvador Allende, and ushered in the oppressive rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet. Decades later the capitalist system and constitution inherited from the dictatorship remained fundamentally the same. This was graphically demonstrated by the mass movement and general strike in the fall of 2019, which led to the vote in favour of changing the rotten Chilean constitution. On the back of these mass movements, a new generation of socialists is awakening in Chile! Carlos Hernan, activist with Fightback and organiser with the Chilean Marxist group Octubre, gives this talk on Chile: From Allende to Pinochet to today
One hundred years ago, Ireland was in the midst of a revolutionary war for independence from Britain. The Irish struggle for freedom is full of lessons for Marxists today— the tactics of divide and rule of the ruling class, the betrayals of nationalist leaders, the role of individual terrorism, the role of religion, and above all the role of the working class in national liberation struggles. In this episode, Ben Curry, editor of Socialist Appeal UK, discusses the Irish struggle for freedom.
Since the 1920s, capitalist economists have argued that a socialist planned economy would be unable to distribute goods and services as well as a capitalist market economy. However, this argument is not supported by experience. In this episode, Fightback organizer Vincent Beaudoin looks at how examples of large-scale economic planning beat out market-based methods, and makes the case for a socialist planned economy.
The American Civil War of 1861-1865 is what Marxists consider the Second American Revolution. It finally uprooted slavery and paved the way for the struggle of the working class to unfold on a gigantic scale. As Marx said at the time, “Labor in the white skin can never free itself as long as labor in the black skin is branded.” While this revolution was a tremendous step forward, it never realized its promise to Black people. In light of today's mass struggle against racism, it is important to return to one of the most pivotal events in this long fight. In this episode, John Peterson, editor of Socialist Revolution, the paper of the US section of the International Marxist Tendency, discusses the American Civil War to end slavery.

One hundred years ago, the Communist Party of Canada, the Canadian section of Lenin's Communist International, was officially founded. The history of the party, and especially the early days, is full of lessons for revolutionary Marxists today.
Officially founded in 1867, the creation of the modern nation state of Canada was not the result of a revolution as with our neighbours to the south - but of a vicious counter-revolution. The process which led to the creation of Canada began with the putting down of the rebellions in what is now Quebec and Ontario of 1837-38 and was completed with the crushing of the Metis resistance in the west. While this movement of the Metis ultimately went down in defeat, it is important for Marxists to understand these events.

You are listening to our school holiday bonus episode with Brigette Smith from Small Ideas. So if you live in Australia you will currently be in the middle of winter school holidays. School holidays is something that comes up a lot in my conversations because it can be a blessing and a curse for many small business owners. Many of us start our businesses so that we can be around for school holidays and I’ve loved hearing from many of my guests who deliberately take every holiday off or set strong boundaries during this time.I have to admit I’m not very good at this. A problem I’ve always had with my job in PR is that time management can be difficult as a lot of what I do it dependant on the media and their timeline which often doesn’t fit in with my own.I think Winter holidays can be tricky too as the weather isn’t the greatest and it is more important to be deliberate about scheduling specific activities in. This is why I’ve asked Brigette onto today’s show.Brigette Smith is passionate about families having fun and spending more quality time together. She is a part of Small Ideas which gives families fun on the go and big discounts to hundreds of activities across Melbourne and Sydney so families can do more together for less.Discounted activities include play centres, cinemas, attractions, animal farms, leisure centres, indoor activity centres and School Holiday camps plus heaps more.Visit smallideas.com.au for more information.

Joss Christensen was on the bubble to make the US Olympic Team in 2014 when he lost his dad. While this hurt Joss’s pride, it also gave him something to prove…And he did by becoming the first ever Ski Slopestyle Olympic Gold Medalist. Sunscreens are not always toxic to marine organisms - they actually promote the growth of many species of micro algae that form the basis for all life in the sea. In insightLMU, biology student Helena Hager, who uncovered this surprising phenomenon, talks about her intriguing research project, which was funded by Lehre@LMU. For this university-wide program designed to develop novel ideas in tuition and studies, LMU has once again received generous Federal funding. • From the sea bottom to the summit of Mount Sinai: LMU professor Ronny Vollandt discusses the background to a succession of Arabic translations of texts from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, which began to appear in the 8th century - a little known phase in the dissemination of the Scriptures. • And from the South to the far North - to Tartu/Estonia, where students from all over Europe gathered for the very first Winter School in Finno-Ugric Studies as part of the new cooperative venture, entitled "Integrating Finno-Ugric Studies in Europe" (InFUSE), whose aim is to link students enrolled in this niche-subject throughout Europe. • And from northern Europe back to Munich, and two students who have come to LMU from embattled Syria: Samar Shammas was working on her thesis when her house in Damascus was hit by a bomb. Ahmad Al-Nabulsi was at dental school when he was imprisoned for joining a protest against the government. Both are now starting over again at LMU.

Jason Sutton, Deputy Principal of CAC joined Frenchy on Rural Focus.

The podcast is produced by Woods Noble Media.
